Aum Gandhi, a runner from California, experienced weight changes and mental health issues due to the high stress of his job. But five years ago, once he picked up running by accident, he immediately developed a thirst for taking on greater challenges. A 5-kilometer run led to a half marathon, which led to a full marathon, and after discovering trail running (山径越野跑), he completed his first 100-mile race in April 2021.
Along the way, Gandhi discovered that his running could be more meaningful when it became a vehicle for change. When in college at California State University, Gandhi began volunteering at the Richstone Family Center — a nonprofit devoted to treating and preventing child abuse and family violence. Gandhi soon grew passionate about the cause and began fundraising for the organization in combination with his races.
“I grew up in a similar environment in the Los Angeles area and experienced things such as abuse, being around domestic violence, and seeing the damage of generational pain,” he says, “I saw how passionate their volunteers are and I just see myself in those kids.”
The athlete uses his social media platform to ask for donations, and at each race, he attaches the Richstone logo to the back of his shirt to spread people’s awareness on the trails. “To me, as long as that money and that awareness is going toward goodwill, good stuff is going to happen in the world,” he says.
For the next year, Gandhi has his eyes set on the Triple Crown of 200 Miles. He’ll have to complete all 654 miles of the series in a calendar year, and he plans to continue upping his fundraising goals — even if that means being overly ambitious. “I’ve always had the mindset of failing big instead of winning small,” he says.
24.What do we know about Aum Gandhi in paragraph 1?
A.He is a popular runner. B.He is under great stress.
C.He has a passion for running. D.He has gained fame from running.

27.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Fundraising: A Key to Success. B.Failing Big: To Run happily.
C.Volunteering: To Prevent Child Abuse. D.Trail Running: A Path to Transformation.

What makes a certain piece of writing great? Well, it depends on whom you ask. There are, in my mind, three different readers: casual readers, lit critics, creative writers. They would say the following about Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre:
Casual reader: Jane’s story is very relatable, especially to women who survived their teenage years. The story’s elements of romance, mystery, and coming-of-age make it enjoyable to read.
Literary critic: Jane Eyre pulls inspiration from the Gothic and romantic literary traditions. The atmospheric setting mirrors Jane’s inner world and serves as a character itself.
Creative writer: Jane has an appealing character and her pursuit of a fulfilling life is timeless. While Jane’s emotions are often verbose (冗长的), each word still feels necessary in most passages.
All of these responses are reasonable interpretations of the great literary work Jane Eyre. What’s the difference between these three? The casual reader is primarily interested in the story’s relatability and entertainment value; the literary critic, who knows how to read literature like a professor, looks for ways to situate this work in its broader literary context.
The creative writer must do both: the job of the casual reader and the job of the critic. He/she engages with the work on a personal level while also researching what makes a work successful. This is Reading Like a Writer (RLW), which means being impacted by a piece of literature while investigating how the writer did it. Successful works of writing succeed for different reasons-a distinctive voice, moving storytelling, an empowering message, etc. Writers don’t make the achievement randomly: they earn it by crafting every plot point and character, every line break, with care and precision. It’s up to you to pay attention to these craft elements, the choices the writer makes and how they contribute to the work as a whole.
Yes, reading like a writer is extra work. But it’s necessary work to the writing practice. By observing the strategies writers employ to tell convincing stories or write engaging arguments, you equip yourself with the knowledge to perform these strategies yourself.
28.The author cites three reader responses to Jane Eyre ________.
A.to argue that the novel is poorly written
B.to explain different reading perspectives
C.to prove how detailed literary analysis can be
D.to show the misinterpretation by creative writers
29.According to the passage, which of the following most probably demonstrates RLW?
A.Discussing fascinating plots and characters in a novel.
B.Examining the literary sources a Greek classic draws on.
C.Analyzing why a short story is popular and how it is structured.
D.Summarizing the main events of a short story for a class assignment.
30.What does the underlined pronoun “it” refer to?
A.Care and precision in writing B.Recognition of works as success
C.Investigation of writing style D.Character analysis through words
31.The author suggests RLW is “necessary work” (para.7) because readers can ________.
A.write lengthy novels like Jane Eyre B.gain knowledge in employment
C.become professional literary critic D.improve their own writing craft
D
Alan Jamieson remembers seeing it for the first time: a small, black fiber floating in liquid. It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic (人工合成) — a piece of plastic. And worryingly, his student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small amphipod (片脚类动物) living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean.
For the past decade, Jamieson, a marine biologist at Newcastle University, has been sending vehicles to the bottom of marine trenches (海沟), which can be as deep as the Himalayas are tall. These landers have collected amphipods — scavenger relatives of crabs and shrimp that thrive in the depths. Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another. But a few years ago, he decided to analyze their body for toxic, human-made pollutants, which have been banned for decades but which persist in nature for much longer.
“It’s not a good result,” Jamieson said. “I don’t like doing this type of work.” When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.
Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics. And since they sit at the bottom of the ocean food webs, their appetite can upset entire ecosystems, “They’re like bags of peanuts,” Jamieson says, “Everything else eats amphipods — shrimp, fish — and they’ll end up consuming plastics, too. And when the fish die, they get consumed by amphipods, and it goes round and round in circles.”
“So what can we do? The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recommends we protect 30 percent of every marine habitat to address human impacts, but that will only help if we’re also sustainably managing the remaining 70 percent, reducing carbon emissions, and limiting the pollution being dumped in the ocean in the first place.”
32.Which conclusion can NOT be drawn about the fiber?
A.It has been proved to be generated by human. B.It won’t appear again through human’s efforts.
C.It was found in the body of a small amphipod. D.It indicates plastic pollution in the deep ocean.
33.What docs Jamieson’s research focus on?
A.The food of amphipods.
B.The habitat of amphipods.
C.The difference between amphipods in different trenches.
D.The existence of human-made pollutants in amphipods.
34.What’s the scientific journal’s initial attitude towards Jamieson’s findings?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Disapproving.
35.By saying “their appetite can upset entire ecosystems”, the author means ________.
A.amphipods have occupied a lot of ocean space because of their appetite
B.amphipods’ habitat should be protected so as to address human impacts
C.amphipods can produce chain effects since they are food resources of others
D.amphipods consuming too much marine resources affect the balance of nature

According to A Guide for Families by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, children, preteens, and teens can lie for varying reasons. 36 Their upsetting situations could include failing a class. and other struggles with things about themselves or fitting in with their peers.
37 . This is not to say that lying is acceptable, but the less parents take it personally, the more they can calmly and constructively help their child. Children and teens who fall into anxiety easily will use lying as an unhealthy coping strategy.
What should a parent or caregiver do? Try to keep in mind that kids can be quite self-absorbed and they often don’t understand how hurtful lies can be. With this in mind, here are a few tips to help promote truthfulness in your child at any age.
38 If you overreact, then you are just building a barrier between you and your child, Calmly discuss or lecture about honesty and dishonesty and why they chose to lie. 39 Your understanding may not be able to stop your teen from creating those everyday lies, but you can convey that there are other options available.
Keep in mind that addressing lying behaviours is a process not a quick fix. 40 But if you keep your own emotion positively, your child or teen is more likely to eventually open up.
While in the short term you may just get a shrug, keeping yourself calm to create a sense of emotional safety will help your voice of truth and reason be heard throughout their lives.
A.Get them to know that you understand them or their situations.
B.Try to seek some help from experts who understand them well.
C.Some kids may take a while before they feel safe to level with you.
D.When I coach parents, I help them learn not to take lies from their kids personally.

In a town where the streets were lined with various markets and every corner was filled with music, there was a man named Carlo s who had the gift for fixing things. From clocks that wouldn’t tick to bikes that had lost their click, Carlos could mend almost anything and the locals would say, “If Carlo s can’t fix it, then it can’t be fixed.”
Carlos had a son named Luis who admired his father’s talent but had his heart set on music. He would spend hours sitting outside the shop, playing the guitar, filling the air with melodies. Carlos loved his son’s music, but he often worried about his future. “Music is your passion, son, but fixing things is a steady trade”, he would say.
One day, the neighborhood’s joy was affected by the news that the beloved park, where children played and families gathered, was going to be closed down. “It’s old and unsafe,” the city officials said. “It would take too much to fix it.” The community was heartbroken because the park was where memories were made.
Carlos and Luis walked through the park sadly. As they passed the silent swings and the rusty (生锈的) slide, an idea began to form in Luis’ mind. “What if we fix the park, Dad? We could do it together!” But Carlos shook his head, “It’s a big job, dear. Bigger than any we’ve done before.”
Instead of being in despair, Luis organized a concert in the park to raise awareness and funds. The whole neighborhood came to hear him play, their spirits lifted by his songs of hope and unity. After the concert, Carlos stood up, moved by the community’s outpouring of love for the park and their shared moments under the stars.

A.One year old. B.Two years old. C.Three years old.
19.Where will the dogs receive training right after being selected?
A.In training houses. B.In volunteers’ homes. C.In future owners’ homes.
20.Why does the deaf person stay at the training center for one week?
A.To get used to the hearing dog.
B.To help with the dog’s sound training.
C.To learn about the dog’s everyday life.
【答案】18.C 19.B 20.A
【原文】
W: Dogs acting as guides for the blind are a familiar sight in most cities. Less familiar are hearing dogs for deaf people. Small and medium sized dogs make the best hearing dogs. They must be between the ages of seven weeks and three years. They are selected mainly for their high intelligence and active responses to sound and selection. The dogs should learn to get used to all aspects of everyday life. Volunteers take the dogs into their homes for up to six months after this initial stage. Sound training, which lasts sixteen weeks, takes place in training houses and then the owners are invited to stay in a flat at the training centre.
For one week. This is because the deaf person also needs time to adapt to the dog with the help of the trainers. This is then followed by living with the dog for three months in their own home. This is the final stage. If the dog passes, it will be a qualified hearing dog.

根据第一段“The casual reader is primarily interested in the story’s relatability and entertainment value; the literary critic, who knows how to read literature like a professor, looks for ways to situate this work in its broader literary context (普通读者主要对故事的关联性和娱乐价值感兴趣;文学评论家知道如何像教授一样阅读文学,他会寻找将这部作品置于更广阔的文学语境中的方法)”可知,作者引用了三位读者对《简·爱》的回应是为了解释不同的阅读视角,故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“This is Reading Like a Writer (RLW), which means being impacted by a piece of literature while investigating how the writer did it.( 这就是所谓的“作家式阅读”,意味着在研究作家如何写作的同时,也深受文学作品的影响)”可知,C项“Analyzing why a short story is popular and how it is structured(分析短篇小说为什么受欢迎以及它的结构)”最能展示“作家式阅读”,故选C项。
30.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Successful works of writing succeed for different reasons-a distinctive voice, moving storytelling, an empowering message, etc. Writers don’t make the achievement randomly(成功的作品之所以成功,各有其原因——独特的声音、感人的叙事、鼓舞人心的信息等等。作家们的成就并非偶然得来)”可知,划线词表示的是“作品被认可为成功”,故选B项。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Yes, reading like a writer is extra work. But it’s necessary work to the writing practice. By observing the strategies writers employ to tell convincing stories or write engaging arguments, you equip yourself with the knowledge to perform these strategies yourself.(是的,像作家那样阅读需要额外的工作。但这对于写作实践来说是必要的工作。通过观察作家使用的策略来讲述令人信服的故事或撰写引人入胜的论点,你为自己装备了运用这些策略的知识)”可知,作者认为RLW是“必要的工作”是因为读者可以提高自己的写作技巧,故选D项。

【答案】32.B 33.D 34.B 35.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了艾伦·贾米森发现深海动物体内也有人工合成的塑料,解释了其发现经过。
32.细节理解题。根据第一段“It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic (人工合成) — a piece of plastic. And worryingly, his student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small amphipod (片脚类动物) living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean. (它看起来像一根头发,但当贾米森在显微镜下观察它时,他意识到这种纤维显然是人工合成的——一块塑料。令人担忧的是,他的学生劳伦·布鲁克斯从一种生活在海洋最深处的小片脚类动物的肠道中取出了它)”可知,C选项“它是在一个小片脚类动物的身体里发现的”和D选项“这表明深海中有塑料污染”可以得出;根据第三段“When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.(当他把他的发现提交给一份科学杂志时,审查这篇论文的研究人员合理地问他是如何判断这些纤维实际上是塑料的。为了让批评者满意,他的团队对其中一部分纤维进行了化学分析,发现它们都是人工合成的)”可知A选项“它已被证明是由人类产生的”。故关于纤维的结论中,B选项“经过人类的努力,它不会再出现了”无法得出。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another. But a few years ago, he decided to analyze their body for toxic, human-made pollutants, which have been banned for decades but which persist in nature for much longer.(贾米森最初想知道这些动物在不同的海沟之间有何不同。但几年前,他决定分析它们体内的有毒、人为污染物,这些污染物已经被禁止了几十年,但在自然界中存在的时间要长得多)”可知,贾米森的研究重点是片脚类动物体内存在人为污染物。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.(当他把他的发现提交给一份科学杂志时,审查这篇论文的研究人员合理地问他是如何判断这些纤维实际上是塑料的。为了让批评者满意,他的团队对其中一部分纤维进行了化学分析,发现它们都是人工合成的)”可知,科学杂志对贾米森的发现最初的态度是怀疑。故选B。
35.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics. And since they sit at the bottom of the ocean food webs, their appetite can upset entire ecosystems, “They’re like bags of peanuts,” Jamieson says, “Everything else eats amphipods — shrimp, fish — and they’ll end up consuming plastics, too. And when the fish die, they get consumed by amphipods, and it goes round and round in circles.”(深海里的食物很少,所以片脚类动物几乎什么都吃,这使得它们特别容易受到塑料的伤害。
E.They try to avoid getting into trouble or lie because they are too upset to talk about painful experiences.
F.Lying is not only harmful to kids then selves, but also it hurts people around them.
G.The best you can do as a parent is to keep yourself from overreacting to your child’s lies.

“We will fix our park!” Carlos declared to the crowd. The words echoed through the park, filling the air with a renewed sense of hope. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, their energy and determination igniting a spark within each other. Carlos continued, “Together, we will make this park shine again. We’ll use my skills to mend the broken structures and Luis’ music to inspire and unite us.” The neighbors nodded in agreement, ready to roll up their sleeves and contribute in any way they could.
The Park was saved due to the city officials’ support, but it was the collective efforts of the community that truly made the difference. After hearing about the concert and the passionate speeches made by Carlos and Luis, the officials were touched by the residents’ dedication to preserving their cherished space. They agreed to provide necessary funding and resources, recognizing the value of the park as a hub for community bonding and childhood memories. As the park slowly regained its former glory, the community felt a renewed sense of pride and belonging. The city officials even organized an official reopening ceremony, where Luis performed a special concert, dedicating his music to the park and the people who made its salvation possible.
