A group of foreigners visited Weihai, a coastal city, to explore what the rising star in China’s tourism market can offer.
Driven by social media and short video platforms, Weihai’s tourism industry saw a huge growth, with the city of just 2.92 million residents welcoming over 59 million visits.
Their first stop is the Dongchu Island in Rongcheng, a county-level city in Weihai, where the scenery is characterized by the region’s unique seaweed-roofed houses. “I’ve never seen a roof made of seaweed. I can’t believe my eyes at the houses,” said Nick Ive, a British editor.
The group then visited the Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch (海洋牧场), a hot family-friendly tourist destination to experience marine farming. “Visiting Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch was a pleasant experience because I could see and experience firsthand how the sea fishes are kept,” said Desca LydiaNatalia, a journalist with Antara, Indonesia’s national news agency. “This experience not only increased my understanding but also provided enjoyment, as I could directly eat clams (蛤蜊) freshly harvested from the sea. I even had the opportunity to feed the seagulls.”
Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch receives about 80,000 visitors every year since it was established in 2015. Visiting the marine ranch has become one of the must-dos in Weihai.
Desca said that her favorite experience was living in a homestay in Weihai. “While staying in a hotel is comfortable a homestay offers a different experience, especially since the yard is large and full of flowers, making it feel like home. So I chose a homestay,” said the Indonesian journalist. The homestay Decca chose is just a stone’s throw away from the beach. Desca said that her country is a maritime country and also has many homestays. “So when I stayed in the homestay, the atmosphere reminded me of Indonesia,” she added.
4. What contributes to Weihai’s growing tourism industry?
A. Social media. B. Visits of foreigners.
C. Friendly residents. D. Beautiful scenery.
5. How did Nick Ive feel about the seaweed-roofed houses?
A. Grateful. B. Frightened. C. Fortunate. D. Surprised.
6. What did Decca do at the Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch?

C. She harvested clams. D. She surfed in the sea.
7. Why did Decca choose the homestay?

In San Francisco, a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39, which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock (码头) officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the region in 15 years.
“Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week,” PIER 39 harbor master Sheila Chandor told many different medias. “The increase in sea lions is usually a good sign of their strong population and healthy living environment,” said Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement at the Marine Mammal (海洋哺乳动物) Center in Sausalito, California.
“California sea lions are sentinels (哨兵) of the ocean,” Ratner said. Their population to some extent reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of California sea lions is clearly a good thing.
For nearly 35 years, the animals have been a star attraction for visitors. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just been repaired, but the ships had not yet been moved back. At that moment, the sea lions’ unexpected arrival not only attracted fans but also created enemies. According to a website, some dock residents and workers were scared away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake.
The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. “The fact prove that this is really a good thing,” he said. “This is just a proof of how we can truly work together at think about how we can share our coasts with marine mammals and other wildlife in a way that benefit all the parties involved.”
8. How does the author start the text?

9. What does the increase of the sea lions mean?
A. The sea lions are migrating.
B. The sea environment is good.
C. The sea wildlife is threatened.
D. The sea water should be cleaned.
10. What can we learn from Ratner’s words?
A. He was uninterested in the sea lions.
B. He was in favor of the final decision.
C. He was doubtful about living with the sea lions.
D. He was concerned about the situation of the sea lions.
11. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Sea lions are pretty cool animals.
B. Animals and humans can live in harmony.
C. Watching sea lions is popular in San Francisco.
D. The growing sea lions appear in San Francisco.

Researchers in Australia recently announced a new device (设备) that absorbs water from air to produce drinkable water. They said it can produce up to 1,000 liters of drinkable water a day, adding that it could be “lifesaving during drought or emergencies”. What’s more, unlike other water generators (造水机), their invention works by heating air instead of cooling it.
Researchers at the University of Newcastle call the device the Hydro Harvester. The device absorbs water from the air. Solar energy or heat from other industrial processes can be used to produce hot and wet air. After heating, the air cools, producing water for drinking or watering crops.
The researchers say the device can produce enough drinking water each day for a small rural town of up to 400 people. It could also help farmers keep their crops alive during droughts. Researchers thought their device would be especially useful in Australia because its climate is dry.
More than 2 billion people around the world will benefit from the device. They are in a situation where they do not have access to high-quality water. The device is meant to help alleviate water shortage and safety.
Studies of the technology will be done in several Australian communities this year. The World Economic Forum (WEF), a nonprofit group based in Switzerland, says water shortage continues to be a problem worldwide. The WEF said getting water from the atmosphere is a “promising solution that can immediately generate drinkable water using moisture (水汽) in the air”. However, the group warns that the technology is costly. It estimates that one mid-sized device could cost between $30,000 and $50,000. So the group is concerned whether it will be accepted by the public.
12. What makes the device different from other water generators?
A. It works by heating air. B. It collects water from air.
C. It can be used in drought areas. D. It can produce drinkable water.
13. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Determine. B. Reflect. C. Relieve. D. Contain.
14. What is the worry of WEF about the device?
A. It results in water shortage.
B. It takes too long to do further study.
C. It is too expensive to be accepted.
D. It is harmful to the environment.
15. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Drought Is a Serious Problem in Australia
B. A New Invention Was Widely Used in Australia
C. Australia Sees the Growing Need for Drinking Water
D. A New Device Producing Drinking Water Was Invented

“Mom” I said, “I’ve been nominated (提名) for the National Junior Honor Society.” My mother gave me a sweet smile and congratulated me. “I’m so proud of you,” she told me.
Then it was time for me to fill out the application. Mom accompanied me in the family room and saw the process. I had to prove that I had all the characteristics required in a candidate (候选人): scholarship, leadership, service, character, and so on. The next day, I turned in the paperwork to the advisor (顾问) and didn’t think any more about it.
Months went by, I received a letter from the school about the Honor Society. I opened it and surprisingly, it just told me I failed. I felt shocked and disappointed. As soon as the bus let me off that afternoon, I dragged myself into the house. My mother was typing at the computer. “Mom,” I said sadly, “I didn’t make the Honor Society.” She smiled and held up her hand to give me a high five. “You are joking.” Suddenly, I felt tears come from my eyes. “No, really, they didn’t pick me,” I said and handed her the letter.
“There must be some mistakes. Don’t worry and I’ll help you contact the advisor.” She grabbed the phone and dialed the Honor Society advisor. “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. I thought you were kidding,” my mother said. However, from the phone, she was told no mistake was made, and the decisions were final.
It bothered me why I wasn’t chosen. It was really hurting me because nearly all of my friends were chosen for the Honor Society. I seemed to become the worst one and I felt painful and sad.

“While staying in a hotel is comfortable, a homestay offers a different experience, especially since the yard is large and full of flowers, making it feel like home.

C. Australia Sees the Growing Need for Drinking Water
D. A New Device Producing Drinking Water Was Invented

【答案】Reading is part of my growing
As Maxim Gorky has said,“Books are the stepping stones to human progress.”Clearly, we cannot do without reading books while growing if we want a better self.
As for me, it is with reading that my life is full of interesting souls, from whom I have taken in wisdom, humor, as well as knowledge. What’s more, I have found myself changing from somebody shy to really outgoing and easy-going, making quite a lot of friends with common interests.
Take pleasure in reading as a means of personal development; great things lie ahead.

“Mom,” I said, “I’ve been nominated (提名) for the National Junior Honor Society.” My mother gave me a sweet smile and congratulated me.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
My mother shared a story of her friend who had the same experience. The story was about a high school friend of hers. He was intelligent and had a good heart, but for some reason he wasn’t chosen for the National Junior Honor Society. But many years later, he became a world specialist who treated lung cancer and he saved lives every day. After the story, my mother told me not being a member of the honor society wasn’t going to ruin my future. Touched by the story and her words, I felt relieved suddenly.
I smiled and made up my mind to make a change. After all, what was more important was that a bright future was likely to await me. It was time to let go of the painful experience. I made up my mind to devote myself to studying hard as well as improving myself. Everything seemed smooth gradually. I became the best student to graduate from the middle school and be admitted to my dream university. Looking back on the experience, I found the lesson that my mother taught me occurred to my mind again.
