In 2014, a university student went with friends for a birthday celebration to Beijing Zoo. Little did he know that a chance turning up at the aquarium there would excite a lifelong passion. As Xu Yitang stared at clusters of coral (珊瑚) in the tank, a sense of wonder washed over him.
After he first saw coral at the aquarium, he often went to the local market to learn about coral farming. He also searched for information online. Before long, he set up a small fish tank at home and started cultivating coral.
“The coral organism is easily destroyed and has extremely high requirements for water quality,” recalls Xu. “When I started cultivating coral, its state was not good.” As Xu gained knowledge about coral, his coral gradually started to grow well.
Xu, a Beijing native, has now lived on the tropical island of Hainan Province, where he serves as a coral conservationist (保护主义者). Each day, he spends several hours diving deep under the waves to observe and document the growth and development of the creatures in coral reefs, known as “tropical rainforests” and “underwater gardens” of the ocean, providing a home for a quarter of all marine life. He aims to encourage individuals to take action in protecting coral reefs and the ocean as a whole from the destructive impact of climate change and human activities. “Understanding the species is the first step toward effective conservation,” he says.
While pursuing his passion to protect coral, he met his life partner, Liu Xiwen, through their shared hobby of diving in Hainan. “Unlike many young people who care about their outfit and appearance, he is only focused on protecting coral,” says Liu. “Despite his skin peeling for spending long hours in the seawater, his attitude is different from what I’ve seen in most young people, and it’s attractive to me.”
4. What contributes to Xu’s career choice?
A. A trip to Beijing Zoo. B. His hobby of coral farming.
C. His love for visiting aquariums. D. Online information about coral.
5. What does the underlined word “cultivating” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Affecting. B. Removing. C. Growing. D. Harvesting.
6. What is Xu’s final goal?
A. To build a shelter for all marine life. B. To protect coral reefs and the ocean.
C. To reduce human impact on the ocean. D. To learn about the creatures in coral reefs.
7. How does Xu’s life partner feel about his work?
A. Worried. B. Regretful. C. Curious. D. Proud.

What country does French belong to? The answer seems obvious: France. But there are about four times as many speakers of French outside France as there are within it. Likewise, the English people cannot say that the language of English is theirs. The other nations in the British Isles and across the Atlantic make it clear that it is shared wealth. But these countries along with other Anglophone (英语为母语的) peoples must at some point come to accept the fact that, even together, their language no longer belongs to them.
Every day, the number of English-speakers born outside the traditional Anglosphere grows. English-speakers pride themselves on the spread of the language, and this is due to an open-minded attitude so it has happily included words from around the world. In the coming century, though, English will do more than borrow words. In non-Anglophone countries, it is becoming not just a useful second language, but a native one. Already it is easy to find children in northern Europe who speak as though they come from Kansas, whose childhoods were spent in films and television in English.
Today, many learners still aim for an American or British standard. Textbooks instruct Indian English-speakers to avoid Indianisms such as “I am working here for years” for “I have been working here for years”. Yet as hundreds of millions of new speakers make English their own, they are going to be less keen to sound British or American. Academic (学术的) movements such as “English as a lingua franca” have been developing the idea that speakers — no longer referred to as “non-native” but rather “multilingual” — should feel free to ignore British or American rules.
Given enough time, new generations of native speakers contribute not just words but their own grammar to the language they learn. “I am working here for years” is a mistake today, but it may become standard in the future in Anglophone Indian circles.
8. Which statement best describes the current situation of French language?
A. French totally belongs to France since ancient days.
B. The majority of French speakers are outside France.
C. French speakers are four times less than English speakers.
D. French is shared among the British Isles and across the Atlantic.
9. What helps the spread of English according to English-speakers?
A. The vast area. B. The big population.
C. The flexible mindset. D. The rich historical culture.
10. What is the movement “English as a lingua franca” aimed at?
A. Developing more ideas about language. B. Promoting scientists’ academic abilities.
C. Lessening the effect of being non-Anglophone. D. Supporting American or British standard.
11. Which might the author agree with?
A. English language will become more diverse. B. It takes learners much time to learn English.
C. Films and television in English are top choices. D. More nations make English an official language.
D
It’s become an accepted part of keeping up to date with your family and friends, but if schoolchildren were in their parents’ shoes, most of them say they wouldn’t share posts of their sons and daughters online. Over 55% said they would not upload news about, or images of, their children on their social media, according to the survey of over 16,000 pupils by Votes for Schools.
While some were worried about being awkward or the long life of content which could remain online, others feared their personal data would be misused. One of the pupils surveyed said,“Although our parents mean well, sometimes the danger brought by sharenting (晒娃) can be huge.”
In response to the survey, children’s mental health organization Mishcon de Reya has produced three films ahead of the Christmas holidays—the best period for parental oversharing. In one video, about safety online, 10-year-old Adavan said, “If you share anything with your family, you know who’s going to see it. But if you share it on your social media, there are millions of people who can see your picture.”
Joe Hancock, a security leader at Mishcon de Reya, encouraged parents to share widely. “Simple steps, such as checking your network environment and asking others not to post the content of your children on their accounts if they are not sure about the privacy settings, are a good start. And, as we found out from the children during filming, having their permission is key,” he said.
The study marks a change from the usual practice of teaching children how to use the Internet safely to warning parents against network risks. Sandra Davis, head of the organization’s family department, said, “Children are the real and immediately affected side of sharenting. We must ensure we listen to children and take their views into consideration now in order to avoid any unwanted results further down the line.”
12. What’s most pupils’ attitude towards sharing posts about children?
A. Unwilling. B. Excited. C. Agreeable. D. Uninterested.
13. What should parents first pay attention to according to Joe Hancock?
A. Content. B. Safety. C. Accounts. D. Health.
14. What suggestion did Sandra Davis put forward?
A. Parents should think about children’s opinions.
B. Children must make sure to listen to their parents.
C. Children must look out for the impact of sharenting.
D. Parents should teach children to use the Internet safely.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A warning against sharenting.
B. Harmful contents on the Internet.
C. The right and wrong of sharenting.
D. The importance of privacy settings.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
It was 11 pm when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.
Maybe she’s fishing. Conrad, then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Conrad was making a quick stop to get some tools before heading out to help his friend.
Tools in hand he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night—in May, when it’s still cold in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin?
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked on a zebra crossing some 20 feet away with the hazards lights (汽车危险警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help.
He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He pretended not to see the rope although he knew exactly what was going on.
She spoke unwillingly, but he kept asking her questions gently and patiently, eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough time. She was jobless, not doing well in school—in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.
“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life. As he talked, he inched closer. Conrad was a quiet guy, but now he found enough topics of conversation to keep the woman engaged and even laughing. She grew comfortable enough to let him get within a few feet of her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式相应位置作答。
Without warning, she climbed onto the railing.

“The coral organism is easily destroyed and has extremely high requirements for water quality” recalls Xu.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 11 pm when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.
Maybe she’s fishing. Conrad then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Conrad was making a quick stop to get some tools before heading out to help his friend.
Tools in hand, he climbed into his car.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】One possible version:
Without warning, she climbed onto the railing. It happened so suddenly. Conrad moved forward quickly and reached for her. He threw his arms around her, trying to haul her down off the railing. But she grabbed the railing with no attempt to let it go, saying, “I’m not worth it.” Heart pounding, Conrad said, “I won’t give up.”
Just then, bright lights appeared and it was the police. Someone had reported Conrad’s car for being parked on the bridge—just as he’d hoped. Two officers raced over and took hold of the woman, and soon, more police arrived and the woman was taken to safety, and then to a hospital for observation. Everyone present sighed in great relief. What was unusual in the whole thing was what Alex Conrad did. One officer was so impressed by Conrad’s actions that he suggested Conrad consider a career as a police negotiator. Conrad just smiled, making no response.
