Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name. Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne? No? The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer. In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from. Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”. Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”. Is every boy called Curtis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope. 1.What can we know about the study? A.Young kids don’t care about their future. B.Most young people care about their names. C.Most girls want to change their names. D.Most parents want to rename by themselves. 2.Why is “Joanne” mentioned in paragraph 2? A.To prove some people hope to be renamed. B.To introduce a famous dancer to readers. C.To introduce her true name. D.To tell the benefit of name. 3.Why is it difficult to choose a good name? A.Kids always want to rename. B.Parents want to choose a meaningful name. C.Parents aren’t sure if their kids will like the name. D.It is hard to change kids’ names. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.Names can never influence our lives B.Methods to choose a suitable name C.Love your parents, love your name D.Your parents’ wish is behind names A group of Chinese language students from Spain visited Malta for three days. They had a chance to enjoy themselves in the amazing Chinese cultural experiences there. At the Confucius Institute of the University of Malta on Saturday, the students from the Official School of Languages were attracted by traditional Chinese flute (长笛) performances, and Chinese tea making. Each of them was photographed trying on Hanfu, a form of traditional Chinese clothing. Despite their age differences, they all proved their dexterity (灵巧) at traditional Chinese works such as paper-cutting and knot-weaving. Maria Nieves, a group member, expressed her strong interest in Chinese culture, after two years of learning the language. “Despite the challenges, Chinese characters are truly beautiful,” she says. On Sunday, the group visited the Mediterranean Regional Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Paola, Malta. Under the guidance of a doctor, they practiced Ba Duan Jin, a set of exercises whose name translates as “eight steps to healthy living”. A lecture on TCM introduced them to treatments like acupuncture (针灸) and cupping, and some of the students had the chance to personally experience a treatment. Feng Hua, leader of the Chinese medical team, says that the TCM center is planning to host more students, who are interested in TCM and Chinese culture to take part in cultural exchange, and learn more about Chinese medical practice. During their visit to the China Cultural Center in Valletta on Monday, the students were drawn to the traditional Chinese lanterns hanging in front of the entrance, and also to the beautiful tea sets in the main hall. Yuan Yuan, director of the China Cultural Center in Malta, highlights the importance of cultural exchange in promoting friendship between nations. 5.What is the first destination of the students’ study visits? A.University of Malta. B.Official School of Languages. C.Mediterranean Regional Center. D.China Cultural Center. 6.How long had Maria Nieves been studying Chinese? A.Six months. B.One year. C.Two years. D.Three years. 7.How many activities were experienced by the students in Paola, Malta? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 8.What could be the best title for the passage? A.Wisdom of Chinese People B.An Amazing Language Learning Tour C.The Importance of Cultural Exchange D.Spanish Students Visit Malta for Cultural Experience The photographs that Scilla took as a 16-year-old girl on the streets of London in 1955 stayed largely in her album (相册) over the years. Scilla is now 83, and her self-developed black-and-white photos have been brought back to life after they were discovered by a teenage photographer. Over the past year, Philip Loveday, 16, has been revisiting his grandmother’s path across the capital to carefully rephotograph the pictures. His journey through time with a camera has been especially moving, because his grandmother, Scilla, has Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) and has lost many of her memories. Philip took new photos that looked like the ones Scilla took long ago, and put them in a new album. Each page of Scilla’s old album was copied and put in the new one, with Philip’s new photos on the opposite pages. Philip’s mother, Catherine Loveday, said Scilla had been happy with the new album, which had “put her back in her shoes” as a teenager. Philip said his mother showed him the album she had found at her mother’s house. Greatly absorbed in how modern London would compare to the city photographed by his grandmother, Philip and his mother began to make trips into central London. During the trips, they had the idea of retaking the photos. Some of the places are similar, like Big Ben. Others show how the city has modernized. Unlike Scilla’s view of St. Paul’s Cathedral from the Thames, Philip’s retake has the Millenium Bridge. When Scilla photographed the John Lewis store on Oxford Street, it was a one-storey building — now it has seven floors. Philip had to use his imagination to recreate other sights. Scilla has repeatedly returned to her new album since receiving it. Philip said: “It’s nice for her to see someone taking an interest in those photos and going back over them, and also good for her to connect her past to where we are now.” 9.What did Philip do for Scilla during the past year? A.He taught her how to use a camera. B.He took her to visit London streets. C.He found a new way to treat her disease. D.He recreated photos of London she had taken. 10.What influence did Philip’s work have on Scilla? A.It inspired her to take photos. B.It made her think of her teenage days. C.It encouraged her to travel across London. D.It raised her confidence to fight off illness. 11.What does the underlined word “absorbed” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Troubled. B.Interested. C.Experienced. D.Disappointed. 12.What is the best title of this passage? A.A teenager sensed the great changes of London. B.An old lady suffered a lot from Alzheimer’s disease. C.A teenager and his mother travelled to London for fun. D.A teenager’s photos helped recover his grandmother’s memory. It was one week before Teachers’ Day. Tom’s mother was very busy. But she didn’t forget to buy cards for her son’s teachers. She drove to a gift store on her way home from work. When she came back, she put the cards on the table in the living room. She was so busy that she did not have time to write them. When Tom came home from school, she said to him, “Here are the cards for your teachers, and here are some stamps, a pen and our book of addresses. Can you write the cards when I am cooking the dinner?” Tom did not say anything, but walked out of the living room and went into his room. Tom’s mother was a little unhappy, but she did not say anything either. She knew that her son always talked little. She was just thinking how to teach Tom to be thankful and make him write the cards. A few minutes later, Tom came back with a box full of cards. All of them had addresses and stamps on them. Tom’s mother was very surprised and asked, “Oh, what are these?” “Mom,” Tom answered, “I bought the cards and wrote all of them a few days ago.” Hearing this, his mother was very moved and said,“________.” 13.How did Tom’s mother go to the gift store? A.Don’t be afraid, dear B.You’re really great, dear C.Many thanks for helping me, dear D.I think you did something terrible, dear One evening, I was preparing dinner. Suddenly, while setting the table, I heard a huge crash from the second floor. It was the kind of heart-stopping noise that immediately struck fear into a mother’s heart. My seven-year-old son Mike began screaming for help, and I raced up the stairs without even putting down the dinner fork I held in my hand. Entering the room, I found my little son Tom trapped under a five-drawer wooden dresser. I could hear crying as I ran toward him. As I leaned over, I saw the terror in his eyes. I pulled the large dresser off him. At that moment, I felt I could move mountains. I was fearful to look but quickly tried to find out how badly he was hurt. I dialed 911 and began to pray. Before the ambulance arrived, although I was in a chaotic (混乱的) situation with both my sons in tears, I tried to be focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me clear-headed. After testing in the emergency room, it was determined that he could return home. The doctor said, “Wow, he sure was lucky!” Back home, my husband straightened up the bedroom and found what we believe to be my son’s guardian angel —only this angel had large wooden ears instead of wings. Earlier that year, my husband’s brother and his wife were on an African mission (任务) trip and brought my son a small, hand-carved elephant as a special gift. My husband explained the elephant had taken the main impact of the dresser. The carved animal was only inches wide, but those few precious inches gave my son the space he needed to avoid terrible injury. I believe that although it was my family’s mission to visit Africa, it was also the mission of that carved elephant to save my son. 18.What happened to Tom? A.He was badly injured in the crash. However, a common complaint (抱怨) nowadays is “my parents have no time for me” or “my children prefer to spend time with their friends”. So what is the reason for such complaints? One of the basic parenting rules is that parents should spend time with their children. This is the time when parents can show their love and care for their children, physically and emotionally. Similarly, the children can show that they appreciate their parents’ love and this brings about a strong parent-child relationship. Both parties get advantage. Busy work is one reason why parents don’t spend time with their children. They are the bread winners, wanting their children to have the best. Often both parents had to work to support the family. So, the children turn to their friends who are there to offer a helping hand and a shoulder to cry on. They open up to their friends more than their parents. Another choice for parents is the maid (女佣) who is always there. When parents get home from the office and the children from school, they are on their own-one parent prepares a meal, the other and children either in front of the computer or their iPhones. They spend time together at a meal but each is more buried in his own thoughts rather than what the others are thinking about. What can be done to correct the situation? Both parents and children can reschedule their activities with the purpose of spending more time together. Have common interests like watching a football game. This will help develop a close and healthy relationship. Having quality time together takes effort, but it’s worthwhile. 22.What’s the author’s purpose of raising a question in the first paragraph? A.To make a fact clear. B.To offer an opinion. C.To lead in the topic. D.To start a conversation. 23.What does the underlined word in paragragh 2 refer to? A.Political organizations. B.Social activities. C.Groups of people. D.Rules of family. 24.Why do children depend more on friends instead of parents? A.Parents are busy with work. B.Parents ask them to join friends. C.Parents want them to have the best. D.Parents need to make bread to support family. 25.What can be done to solve the complaint? A.Require maids to step in. B.Turn to iphones for help. C.Develop different interests. D.Have quality time together. Skill of copying and moving images onto paper is an art form shining in history, Zhao Xu reports. Rubbing, the tracing (描摹) of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). To do this, a thin piece of paper was placed over the surface of the stone tablet (石板) carved with characters. Then water, or later, ink, was applied smoothly to the back of the paper with just the right amount of pressure, to soften the paper and allow for a total moving of the details onto it. The paper was left to dry and then be lifted off the stone surface, carrying with it a copy of the original (原作). Repeated hundreds of thousands of times during the Song era, this hands-on skill enabled educated members of Song society to have a chance to learn from master calligraphic works either from their own times or from earlier dynasties. Oftentimes, the original calligraphy, or even its stone version, became lost over time, thus making the rubbings the only surviving copy of the masterworks that had once existed. In that sense, the Song rubbings, and those behind them; have helped to preserve a cultural relic much valued then and now. Now, art lovers have the chance to visit it at an exhibition (展览) held at Beijing’s Palace Museum themed the Song rubbings. Of the 40 pieces on show, 20 are drawn from the collection of the Palace Museum, which holds a total of 150 Song rubbings. The other half are lent for the first time by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), whose collection of rubbings were donated by J. S. Lee. “What we have here is not just a showcase of the beauty of ink and paper, the art of calligraphy, carving and rubbing, but also the telling of stories shining in cultural pride and common spirit,” said Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum. 26.What do we know about rubbing? A.There were five steps to make a rubbing. B.It moved characters from paper to a stone. C.It was well developed in the Song Dynasty. D.The loss of rubbing. 28.What does paragraph 4 suggest? A.Altogether there are 150 rubbings on show. B.Twenty of the rubbings were donated by CUHK. C.Sources of the exhibits are from two organizations. D.190 Song rubbings are housed in the Palace Museum now. 29.How does Wang Xudong feel about the exhibition? A.Proud. B.Shocked. C.Thankful. The Chinese pancake, or jianbingguozi, is one of the most common breakfast foods in northern China, usually filled with materials like vegetables, eggs and spicy paste. On the video-sharing platform Douyin, French chef Corentin Delcroix’s video of his own type of jianbing has been viewed about 250,000 times. But just how does his differ? It is packed with cheese, ham, pickle (泡菜) and black truffle mayonnaise (黑松露蛋黄酱) — materials typically found in French pancakes, which Delcroix says aren’t all that different to Chinese pancakes. Delcroix’s addiction to Chinese cuisine started in 2002 when he was studying in Beijing. “The first Chinese dish I learned to cook was scrambled eggs with tomatoes. But my favorites are cooked wheat-based foods such as jiaozi and xiaolongbao,’” says Delcroix. After learning how to prepare some of the popular local dishes, Delcroix decided to share his favorite Chinese and French dishes on social media. And many of his videos show him preparing dishes that marry elements of both cuisines. But this effort is not just about self-improvement — Delcroix says he has also managed to learn more about Chinese cuisines through the comments that he receives from his viewers. “It is through the viewers that I get to learn how to create truly local dishes. The suggestions are faster and more direct than those from the market,” Delcroix says. Delcroix is presently a chef, a successful businessman and a food blogger who has millions of followers on Chinese social media platforms. Despite having learned so much about Chinese cuisine over the years, Delcroix is still hungry for more knowledge. Looking ahead, he wants to do more to spread Chinese cuisine to people overseas. “I always feel that there might be cultural barriers when Chinese chefs introduce their local cuisines to foreigners. It might be much easier for a foreigner to explain,” he adds, “I want to be that bridge.” 31.Which is the feature of Delcroix’s video? A.It introduces Chinese cuisine. B.It mainly shows wheat-based foods. C.It combines two countries’ cuisines. D.It shares how to make special jianbing. 32.What does the underlined word “those” in paragraph 3 refer to? A.The Chinese cuisines. B.The suggestions. C.The local dishes. D.The viewers. 33.Why does Delcroix want to be a bridge? A.To open a Chinese restaurant in France. B.To get more knowledge of Chinese cuisine. C.To introduce more delicious food to his fans. D.To improve foreigners’ understanding of Chinese cuisine. 34.Which of the following best describes Delcroix? A.Creative and determined. B.Professional but negative. C.Humorous and talented. D.Curious but impatient. When the day is dawning, the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings of the old town Liliang welcomes his owner, He Runyuan, who is dressed in a traditional Naxi clothing. Every day, He explains Dongba culture to tourists and teaches them to write Dongba characters. “Dongba characters are not only the soul of Dongba culture, but also a treasure for the whole world,” said He. Enjoying a history of over 1,000 years, Dongba characters are an ancient system of pictographic glyphs They are praised to be the “living fossil (活化石)” in writing. Dongba culture is always mastered by Dongbas, the Naxi priests (祭司). Without Dongbas in his village, He has to travel far to the Old Town, where many Dongbas are gathered. “In most cases, I need to walk for more than one day to the destination. To get more learning time, I always set off very early when the city is still in darkness,” said He. But the love for Dongba culture keeps him going. For the past 30 years, He has been studying these characters every day. In 2016, He set up the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings Where He beautified fans, glasses and even T-shirts with Dongba characters, hoping to pass down Dongba culture and let more people know about it. “Our life is limited, but so long as everyone makes an effort, the life of a culture can exist forever,” He said. 35.What does He Runyuan do in his center every day? I was looking through old photos with Mom. “Where on earth is that photo of Dad and Mumpsy?” I asked. It was my favorite one of Dad holding his dog. “Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.” I looked at Mom as if she had the third eye. She could not be serious! Grandma had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean hadn’t got along since I was a little boy. Jean would say hurtful words to Mom, and Mom tried to let it go. After Grandma passed away, our connection with Uncle Ralph and Jean fell apart. Yet here was Mom, intending to reach out to Jean after nearly 30 years. “We’re in our eighties,” Mom said. “Neither of us has many years left. Why not give it a try?” Mom called Jean. Jean said the photos weren’t organized, and she invited Mom over to help look for the photo. Sitting down at the table, Mom and Jean got through all the boxes from Grandma but didn’t find the photo. After a short talk, Jean said sorry for what she had done years before. She said that over the years, she had come to realize her mistakes but the fear of not being forgiven had stopped her saying sorry. Over the next few hours, they talked about what had happened in their lives. “Jean received a college degree, and she’s become an artist. She has even sold a few of her paintings.” Mom later told me. “Then Jean pulled out a photo album (相册) of her family, just to share with me.” “I suppose you didn’t find the Mumpsy photo,” I commented. “Oh, I almost forgot. Guess what was stuck into the back cover of the album and fell out when she opened it?” Mom held up the photo of Dad and Mumpsy — lost until the recovery of Jean and Mom’s wounds. 39.How did the author treat her mother’s idea of asking Jean? 根据第二段“Can you write the cards when I am cooking the dinner? 根据第二段“She knew that her son always talked little.(她知道她的儿子总是很少说话)”可知,在汤姆的母亲眼里,她的儿子是安静的。故选A。 16. 根据第二段“Tom’s mother was a little unhappy, but she did not say anything either. (汤姆的妈妈有点不高兴,但她也没说什么)”以及第三段“Tom’s mother was very surprised and asked, “Oh, what are these?” “Mom,” Tom answered, “I bought the cards and wrote all of them a few days ago.” Hearing this, his mother was very moved(汤姆的妈妈非常惊讶地问:“哦,这些是什么?”“妈妈,”汤姆回答说,“这些卡片是我几天前买的,而且都写完了。” 根据第三段“Tom’s mother was very surprised and asked, “Oh, what are these?” “Mom,” Tom answered, “I bought the cards and wrote all of them a few days ago.” Hearing this, his mother was very moved(汤姆的妈妈非常惊讶地问:“哦,这些是什么?”“妈妈,”汤姆回答说,“这些卡片是我几天前买的,而且都写完了。” 由文章第二段“Entering the room, I found my little son Tom trapped under a five-drawer wooden dresser. 由文章第五段“The carved animal was only inches wide, but those few precious inches gave my son the space he needed to avoid terrible injury. 20.推理判断题,由文章第二段“I dialed 911 and began to pray. Before the ambulance arrived, although I was in a chaotic (混乱的) situation with both my sons in tears, I tried to be focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me clear-headed.(我拨打了911,开始祈祷。 故选A项。 21. 由文章最后一段“My husband explained the elephant had taken the main impact of the dresser. The carved animal was only inches wide, but those few precious inches gave my son the space he needed to avoid terrible injury. I believe that although it was my family’s mission to visit Africa, it was also the mission of that carved elephant to save my son.(我丈夫解释说,大象受到了梳妆台的主要影响。 根据第一段“The family unit of parents and children is the most important in our life. However, a common complaint (抱怨) nowadays is “my parents have no time for me” or “my children prefer to spend time with their friends”. So what is the reason for such complaints? 和第二段“One of the basic parenting rules is that parents should spend time with their children. 根据划线词上文“One of the basic parenting rules is that parents should spend time with their children. This is the time when parents can show their love and care for their children, physically and emotionally. Similarly, the children can show that they appreciate their parents’ love and this brings about a strong parent-child relationship. 以及划线词所在句子“Both parties get advantage. 根据第三段“Busy work is one reason why parents don’t spend time with their children. They are the bread winners, wanting their children to have the best. Often both parents had to work to support the family. So, the children turn to their friends who are there to offer a helping hand and a shoulder to cry on. 根据最后一段“What can be done to correct the situation? Both parents and children can reschedule their activities with the purpose of spending more time together. Have common interests like watching a football game. This will help develop a close and healthy relationship. Having quality time together takes effort, but it’s worthwhile. 根据第一段“Rubbing, the tracing (描摹) of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). 根据第三段“Repeated hundreds of thousands of times during the Song era, this hands-on skill enabled educated members of Song society to have a chance to learn from master calligraphic works either from their own times or from earlier dynasties. Oftentimes, the original calligraphy, or even its stone version, became lost over time, thus making the rubbings the only surviving copy of the masterworks that had once existed. In that sense, the Song rubbings, and those behind them; have helped to preserve a cultural relic much valued then and now. 根据第四段“Of the 40 pieces on show,20 are drawn from the collection of the Palace Museum, which holds a total of 150 Song rubbings. The other half are lent for the first time by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), whose collection of rubbings were donated by J. S. Lee. 根据最后一段““What we have here is not just a showcase of the beauty of ink and paper, the art of calligraphy, carving and rubbing, but also the telling of stories shining in cultural pride and common spirit,” said Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum. 故选A。 30. 根据第一段“Skill of copying and moving images onto paper is an art form shining in history, Zhao Xu reports. Rubbing, the tracing (描摹) of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). 根据第一段中“The Chinese pancake, or jianbingguozi , is one of the most common breakfast foods in northern China, usually filled with materials like vegetables, eggs and spicy paste. On the video-sharing platform Douyin , French chef Corentin Delcroix’s video of his own type of jianbing has been viewed about 250,000 times. But just how does his differ? It is packed with cheese, ham, pickle (泡菜) and black truffle mayonnaise (黑松露蛋黄酱) — materials typically found in French pancakes (中国煎饼是中国北方最常见的早餐食品之一,通常馅料包括蔬菜、鸡蛋和辣酱。 它的馅料有奶酪、火腿、泡菜和黑松露蛋黄酱——这些都是法式煎饼中常见的材料)”和第二段中“Delcroix decided to share his favorite Chinese and French dishes on social media. And many of his videos show him preparing dishes that marry elements of both cuisines. 根据划线词所在句“It is through the viewers that I get to learn how to create truly local dishes. The suggestions are faster and more direct than those from the market 根据最后一段中““I always feel that there might be cultural barriers when Chinese chefs introduce their local cuisines to foreigners. It might be much easier for a foreigner to explain,” he adds, “I want to be that bridge.” 根据第二段中“Delcroix decided to share his favorite Chinese and French dishes on social media. And many of his videos show him preparing dishes that marry elements of both cuisines. 可知,德尔克鲁瓦创新地将中法两国美食元素结合,并做成菜肴在社交媒体上分享,说明他是一个富创造力的人(creative);根据第四段中“Despite having learned so much about Chinese cuisine over the years, Delcroix is still hungry for more knowledge. 和第五段中“Looking ahead, he wants to do more to spread Chinese cuisine to people overseas. 故选A项。 根据第一段中“When the day is dawning, the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings of the old town Liliang welcomes his owner, He Runyuan, who is dressed in a traditional Naxi clothing. To get more learning time, I always set off very early when the city is still in darkness,” said He.(村子里没有东巴人,他不得不长途跋涉到老城,那里聚集了许多东巴人。“在大多数情况下,我需要走一天以上的路才能到达目的地。为了获得更多的学习时间,我总是在夜幕降临时早早出发。”)”可知,为了学习东巴文字,何润源要长途跋涉,非常辛苦,说明他很勤奋的(hard-working);根据第四段中“But the love for Dongba culture keeps him going. For the past 30 years, He has been studying these characters every day. In 2016, He set up the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings Where He beautified fans, glasses and even T-shirts with Dongba characters, hoping to pass down Dongba culture and let more people know about it.(但对东巴文化的热爱让他坚持了下来。 根据第二段中““These characters have pictographic drawings that look like humans, animals, plants etc.” He said. “They are usually colorful and recognizable.”(何润源说:“这些字有象形文字,看起来像人、动物、植物等。 根据第二段“I looked at Mom as if she had the third eye.
