B Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. That’s true for Logan Earnest’s fifth grade classroom, and he felt it was affecting his students. “Most of the day, they’re inside,” Earnest told CBS News. “And they don’t really get to see any trees, grass, or the blue sky.” He said the gray walls could be depressing to the kids and may affect their attention and even their attendance. This was confirmed by former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez, who said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and benefits students. Though no longer a practicing psychologist, perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. Rodriguez became a park ranger (公园管理员) on Southern California’s Catalina Island and began focusing on his passion—landscape photography. It was during his training to become a park ranger that he learned a fact that kids who have views out windows to trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively. So an idea to bring nature into rooms occurred to him: Why not bring landscapes in classrooms—via the ceiling (天花板), because teachers don’t typically use them. Rodriguez took 360 degree shots of tree canopies (树冠) using his photography skills, then he printed them and fit them onto the classroom ceiling of Earnest’s fifth grade. “Beautiful,”one student said as she entered the room. Another student said the trees brought him peace, “When you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree.” Earnest said he thought there would be many positive effects on his students. “I think my attendance is going to go up. The kids are going to want to come here more frequently. Overall, I think the kids are going to be happier,” he said. 24. What is the common challenge shared by some classrooms at Taft Elementary? A. Lack of fresh air. B. Absence of windows. C. Insufficient lighting. D. Limited access to technology. 25. Why did Ernesto Rodriguez bring landscapes into classrooms? A. To connect the students with nature. B. To promote his photography skills. C. To improve the teachers’ performance. D. To create an exciting environment for the students. 26. How did the students react to Rodriguez’s pictures on the classroom ceiling? A. They did not notice the change. B. They failed to concentrate on lessons. C. They preferred the original gray ceiling. D. They were in favour of the new additions. 27. What’s Logan Earnest’s attitude towards the change in the classroom? A. Cautious and objective. B. Appreciative and supportive. C. Concerned but doubtful. D. Curious but unsure. C Elephants’ important role in maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems has earned them various names including ecosystem engineers and forest gardeners. However, African forest elephants — a species living in the rainforests of central Africa — are increasingly recognized by another name: “climate heroes”. African forest elephants help lessen climate change by increasing carbon storage in their forest habitats, meaning they help remove heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere. They do this by influencing the forest structure, including by increasing the diversity and abundance of plant species. It’s estimated that one forest elephant can increase the net carbon capture (捕获) capacity of the forest by almost 250 acres. This is equal to removing from the atmosphere a year’s worth of emissions (排放量) from 2,047 cars. “As strange as it seems, all that eating and destruction help the forest pull more carbon out of the air,” says Alison Pearce Stevens in the book Animal Climate Heroes! . Elephants eat more than 400 pounds of food a day, so they spend a lot of time searching for food. As they walk through the forest, they do a lot of damage to the surrounding smaller trees, leading to the survival of trees that have the ability to absorb and store more CO2. In addition, their thirst for fruits also helps to promote forest growth. This is because elephants disperse fruit seeds. In other words, the seeds pass through the elephant bodies until they drop back to the forest floor. But African forest elephants are seriously endangered and continue to face threats. These mainly come from hunting for the illegal international trade in elephant ivory (象牙), but also from habitat loss and fewer food sources. The number of forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years, and their habitats are thought to have reduced by 75%. Protecting forest elephants and the forests they depend on means we are safeguarding their ecological contributions that we all rely on. 28. How do African forest elephants help relieve climate change? A. They increase the diversity of wildlife species. B. They help to maintain the plants of the forest. C. They take in heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere. D. They promote the net carbon capture ability of the forest. 29. What does the underlined word “disperse” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Consume. B. Preserve. C. Spread. D. Gather. 30. What are the threats facing African forest elephants? A. Illegal hunting and habitat loss. B. The disturbed balance of the forest ecosystem. C. Natural disasters resulting from climate change. D. Competition for water sources with other animals. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Preserving Forests: Elephants’ Contribution B. New Role of African Forest Elephants: Climate Heroes C. Ivory Trade Threatens African Forest Elephants D. Forest Elephants Are Approaching the Edge of Extinction D Space engineers from the University of Glasgow have published new research showing how reflectors (反射器) placed in orbit around Earth could increase the output of future large-scale solar farms by reflecting additional sunlight toward them even after the sun has set. In their paper, the researchers described how they used advanced computer models to help determine the most effective method of using orbiting solar reflectors to produce additional power. Their models showed that putting 20 thin reflectors into orbit 1,000 kilometers from Earth could reflect sunlight to solar farms for an extra two hours each day on average. The additional sunlight could increase the output of the world’s future solar farms, particularly after sunset when electricity demand is high. The output could be scaled up further by adding more reflectors or increasing their size. The team developed an algorithm (算法) to determine how the reflectors could be arranged to catch the sun’s rays most effectively, maximizing the additional sunlight reflected to solar farms around Earth in the early morning and late evening. The researchers suggested that 20 reflectors could produce an extra 728 MWh of electricity per day — equal to adding an additional large solar power farm to Earth without the cost of construction. Dr. Onur Çelik, one author of the paper, said, “Solar power has the potential to speed our race to reach net-zero, helping us to relieve the global impacts of climate change by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.”Moreover, the price of solar panels (太阳能电池板) has dropped quickly in recent years, increasing the pace of their adoption and paving the way for the creation of large solar farms around the world. One of the major limitations of solar power, of course, is that it can only be generated during daylight hours. Putting orbiting solar reflectors in space would help to maximize the effectiveness of solar farms in the years to come. Strategically placing new solar farms in locations which receive the most additional sunlight from the reflectors could make them even more effective. 32. What is the purpose of placing reflectors in space? A To improve communication between Earth and space. B. To bring the effects of climate change under control. C. To produce electricity for agricultural use. D. To increase the production of solar power. 33. What may contribute to the application of large-scale solar farms? A. The increased demand for electricity. B. The decrease in the cost of solar panels. C. The development of space technology. D. The requirement to preserve the environment. 34. What can be inferred about the future of solar farms? A They’ll replace fossil fuels completely. B. They’ll become the main source of energy. C. They’ll be more cost-effective and efficient. D. They’ll rely mainly on orbiting reflectors for sunlight. 35. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A news report. B. A maths website. C. A marketing brochure. D. A policy brief. Nosebleeds (鼻出血) are among the most common injuries we experience, and they happen for a variety of reasons. And when the race day finally comes after months of training and hours spent running on the playground you want to finish the race well. But sometimes, that just doesn’t happen. A warm moment happened among three runners, and with the help of two other runners, there was a runner who reached the finish line and finished the race. It’s reported that the three runners didn’t know each other before the race. That moment happened at the 203 London Marathon A runner named Louis experienced this as he worked his way towards the end of the race. The man began to double over (弯腰) and was on the edge of collapsing (昏倒) as other runners passed by. Clearly, he was too tired to finish the race. But it was only 200 meters left. And he might fall to the ground at any time. So tired, Louis fell to the ground and looked white and upset. At that moment, a runner saw Louis who needed help, so the runner ran to him and picked him up. “Are you OK?” the runner asked Louis. “I am too tired to keep running,” Louis replied. “Come on! Let me support you to the finish line 200 meters away,” the runner said and grabbed his arm. “It is very kind of you,” Louis said happily. With the help of the runner, there were only 150 meters away from the finish line. But it seemed that he couldn’t hold Louis steady enough, Louis was in a bad condition and would fall to the ground at any time. The runner was very anxious and watched helplessly as other runners ran to the finish line, not knowing what to do. Although the runner tried his best to support Louis steady, Louis fell to the ground again. Just at that moment, another runner came from behind Louis. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With the help of the two runners, Louis finally reached the finish line. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null 楚雄州中小学 2023—2024学年下学期期末教育学业质量监测 高一年级英语试卷 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? The day is July thirty first, so I’ll talk about Kurt Gowdy, born on July thirty, first 1919. He was an excellent sports broadcaster and host of the outdoor show. He developed the idea for the television sports show and hosted ABC's Wide World of Sports, which showed a variety of sports on Saturday afternoon. In 1964 Gowdy made a video for a show in which he and the famous fisherman Joe Brooks went fishing in the Argentine mountains. It became a hit, and almost immediately ABC created a new show built around outdoor amusement the American sportsman. Hosted by Kirk Gowdy, the show focused on fishing and hunting experiences involving famous persons from movie stars, athletes to educators. For millions of Americans, the show was their window to the natural world. Gowdy, an active environmentalist, was a member of the conservation hall of fame international. To honor his work, the state of Wyoming built the Kurt Gowdy state park in 1972. The park lies above 6,450 feet in height. B 25. A 26. D 27. 文章第一段讲到“Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. (加利福尼亚州圣克拉拉市塔夫脱小学的一些教室有一个共同的缺点:没有窗户。)”可知,这个学校的一些教室面临的一个共同的挑战是它们都没有窗户。故选B。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。文章第三段讲到“This was confirmed by former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez, who said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and benefits students. Though no longer a practicing psychologist, perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. (前学校心理学家埃内斯托·罗德里格斯证实了这一点,他说缺乏窗户确实会影响孩子,因为研究表明,在大自然中和大自然周围可以缓解焦虑,对学生有益。)”以及第四段“It was during his training to become a park ranger that he learned a fact that kids who have views out windows to trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively. (正是在他接受公园护林员培训的过程中,他了解到一个事实,即那些能看到窗外树木的孩子在学业、情感和创造力方面都做得更好)”可知,Emesto Rodriguez 将风景“带进”教室是为了将学生和自然联系在一起。接触大自然对孩子们的身心健康有益。故选A。 文章第五段中““Beautiful,”one student said as she entered the room. Another student said the trees brought him peace, “When you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree.” (“太美了,”一个学生走进房间时说。另一名学生说,这些树给他带来了平静,“当你抬头看的时候,感觉就像你坐在树下。”)”引用的两个学生的评价可知,他们对教室天花板上的风景是很喜欢的。故选D。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。文章最后一段中Logan Earmest的话“I think my attendance is going to go up. The kids are going to want to come here more frequently. Overall, I think the kids are going to be happier (我想我的出勤率会上升。孩子们会想更频繁地来这里的。总的来说,我认为孩子们会更快乐)”可知,他对教室里的改变是持欣赏和赞同的态度的。故选B。 C Elephants’ important role in maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems has earned them various names including ecosystem engineers and forest gardeners. B They help to maintain the plants of the forest. C Natural disasters resulting from climate change. D. Competition for water sources with other animals. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Preserving Forests: Elephants’ Contribution B. New Role of African Forest Elephants: Climate Heroes C. Ivory Trade Threatens African Forest Elephants D. Forest Elephants Are Approaching the Edge of Extinction 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. 文章第二段讲到“It’s estimated that one forest elephant can increase the net carbon capture (捕获) capacity of the forest by almost 250 acres. (据估计,一头森林大象可以使森林的净碳捕获能力增加近250英亩。)”可知,非洲森林象通过提高森林的碳捕获能力来帮助减缓气候变化。故选D。 【29题详解】 词义猜测题。根据划线词的上文“In addition, their thirst for fruits also helps to promote forest growth. (此外,它们对水果的渴望也有助于促进森林的生长)”以及下文“In other words, the seeds pass through the elephant bodies until they drop back to the forest floor.( 换句话说,种子穿过大象的身体,直到它们掉回森林地面)”可知,大象喜欢吃水果,而水果的种子通过大象的排泄从大象体内回到森林地面,这帮助散播了水果种子,有助于促进森林的生长。故disperse 同spread “传播”意思相近。故选C。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。文章最后一段中“These mainly come from hunting for the illegal international trade in elephant ivory (象牙), but also from habitat loss and fewer food sources. The number of forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years, and their habitats are thought to have reduced by 75%. (这些主要来自对象牙非法国际贸易的狩猎,也来自栖息地的丧失和食物来源的减少。在31年的时间里,森林大象的数量减少了86%以上,它们的栖息地被认为减少了75%)”可知,非洲森林象面临的主要威胁是非法狩猎、栖息地丧失和食物来源减少。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据文章第一段“Elephants’ important role in maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems has earned them various names including ecosystem engineers and forest gardeners. However, African forest elephants — a species living in the rainforests of central Africa — are increasingly recognized by another name: “climate heroes”. B。 D Space engineers from the University of Glasgow have published new research showing how reflectors (反射器) placed in orbit around Earth could increase the output of future large-scale solar farms by reflecting additional sunlight toward them even after the sun has set. A. To improve communication between Earth and space. A. They’ll replace fossil fuels completely. B. They’ll become the main source of energy. C. They’ll be more cost-effective and efficient. D. They’ll rely mainly on orbiting reflectors for sunlight. 35. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A news report. B. A maths website. C. A marketing brochure. D. A policy brief. 32. That moment happened at the 203 London Marathon. A runner named Louis experienced this as he worked his way towards the end of the race. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Just at that moment, another runner came from behind Louis. Shortly after, the runner appeared on Louis’ other side, grabbed his arm and held Louis steady enough to keep going. “Let me help you,” the runner said to Louis. Louis’ eyes were filled with tears. Then they three ran together and encouraged each other. With these two runners’ help, there were only 50 meters away from the finish line. All the runners cheered on them, “Come on! You can do it!” They kept running to the finish line and sweat streamed down their faces. With the help of the two runners, Louis finally reached the finish line. The two runners quickly took good care of Louis. Louis hugged them and showed great thanks to them. The two runners who selflessly helped Louis became famous on the Internet. The three runners became good friends and decided to meet at next year’s London Marathon. Together, the three runners made their way to the finish line. The warm moment became a part of what made the experience so special. Though the three guys didn’t finish first, they won that day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①拥抱:hug/embrace ②帮助:help/assist 情绪类 ①欢呼:cheer/applaud ②感激:thanks/appreciation 【点睛】【高分句型1】The two runners who selflessly helped Louis became famous on the Internet. 2】The warm moment became a part of what made the experience so special.
