For many British people that can apply to institutions and objects that represent their country’s past-age-old castles, splendid homes… and red phone boxes. Beaten first by the march of technology and lately by the terrible weather in junkyards (废品场), the phone boxes representative of an age are now making something of a comeback. Adapted in imaginative ways, many have reappeared on city streets and village greens housing tiny cafes, cellphone repair shops or even defibrillator machines (除颤器). The original iron boxes with the round roofs first appeared in 1926. They were designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of the Battersea Power Station in London. After becoming an important part of many British streets, the phone boxes began disappearing in the 1980s, with the rise of the mobile phone sending most of them away to the junkyards. About that time, Tony Inglis’ engineering and transport company got the job to remove phone boxes from the streets and sell them out. But Inglis ended up buying hundreds of them himself, with the idea of repairing and selling them. He said that he had heard the calls to preserve the boxes and had seen how some of them were listed as historic buildings. As Inglis and, later other businessmen, got to work, repurposed phone boxes began reappearing in cities and villages as people found new uses for them. Today, they are once again a familiar sight, playing roles that are often just as important for the community as their original purpose. In rural areas, where ambulances can take a relatively long time to arrive, the phone boxes have taken on a lifesaving role. Local organizations can adopt them for l pound, and install defibrillators to help in emergencies. Others also looked at the phone boxes and saw business opportunities. LoveFone, a company that advocates repairing cellphones rather than abandoning them, opened a mini workshop in a London phone box in 2016. The tiny shops made economic sense according to Robert Kerr, a founder of LoveFone. He said that one of the boxes generated around $13,500 in revenue a month and cost only about $400 to rent. Inglis said phone boxes called to mind an age when things were built to last. “I like what they are to people, and I enjoy bringing things back,” he said. 16. The phone boxes are making a comeback ______. A. to form a beautiful sight of the city B. to improve telecommunications services C. to remind people of a historical period D. to meet the requirement of green economy 17. Why did the phone boxes begin to go out of service in the 1980s? A. They were not well-designed. B. They provided bad services. C. They had too short a history. D. They lost to new technologies. 18. The phone boxes are becoming popular mainly because of ______. A. their new appearance and lower prices B. the push of the local organizations C. their changed roles and functions D. the big funding of the businessmen A “secretive” new species of frog has been discovered on the forest floor in India’s Western Ghat mountain range. Named the starry dwarf frog after the markings on its dark brown back, it is just 2 centimeters long. The frog, whose closest relatives are a group of species native to India and Sri Linka, is the only member of an ancient lineage (血统) dating back to millions of years ago, according to researchers from India and the US. It is unclear whether the species is descended (传下来) from African or Asian frogs. A group of Indian and US researchers first came across the local species hidden in leaf-litter as part of a wider project to look for new frogs, lizards and snakes in the richly biodiverse region and stored it in a jar for later study. Genetic testing and a closer look at its shape, colouring and other features have shown that it doesn’t match any existing species. Kartik Shanker of the Indian Institute of Science, who helped design the study, says while it is common to find new frog in India, this one needs to be noticed. “This particular species not just is a new species, but also belongs to a new genus (属), and that makes it a little more special,” says Shanker. The number of known species of frog identified in India has climbed from around 200 to above 400 over the past two decades. While many species new to science are frequently sorted as endangered at once, it is too early to say whether the starry dwarf frog is threatened. “They are very secretive,” says Shanker, adding that the team didn’t know the size of its population. The frog is active at night and lives near water. Habitat loss is a serious risk to frogs in tropical forests around the world, alongside threats such as a deadly fungus (真菌) that has been killing off amphibians (两栖动物) for the past four decades. But the new species was found in a reserved forest, meaning it will enjoy a degree of protection by Indian government agencies. 19. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. The species was discovered by tourists. B. The species was found in a rich region. C. The species was further studied. D. The species was finally set free. 20. What can we say about the new frog? A. It is in small quantities. B. It is an endangered species. C. It is well worth attention. D. It is related to African frogs. 21. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Habitat loss is the chief threat to frogs. B. The new species may face less dangers. C. Tropical forests in India are all under protection. D. The Indian government determines to save frogs. 22. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A pet guide. B. A social website. C. A travel journal. D. A science report. What do the following places have in common: the Serengeti Desert, Edinburgh’s Old Town and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve? The Serengeti Desert is in Tanzania and Kenya, Africa. It contains thousands of kilometers of dry grasslands and many rare kinds of animals. Edinburgh’s Old Town is in the capital city of Scotland. It has many old buildings and streets. There are very few new buildings in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is near Mexico City in Mexico. It has beautiful flowers and forests. It is also the home of millions of butterflies in the winter. These three places are very different. But they are all under special protection by UNESCO They are World Heritage Sites. The story of World Heritage Sites begins more than 3,000 years ago. At that time, the great king of Egypt built many temples. But after thousands of years, sand covered them. Stories tell of a young boy named Abu Simbel who found the temples. One day, Abu Simbel saw something under the sand. Soon, the ancient temples of Ramses Ⅱwere officially rediscovered. But they were not safe. The government of Egypt planned to build a dam on the Nile River. It would create a large lake, which would cover the temples in water. Many people did not want the temples destroyed. UNESCO agreed and raised 40 million dollars from around the world to save the temples. From 1964 to 1968, engineers took the temples apart in many pieces and rebuilt them hundreds of meters back from the Nile River. Today, they are called the Abu Simbel Temples, in memory of the young boy who first found them. The effort to save the Abu Simbel Temples was a success. So in 1972, UNESCO formed the World Heritage Committee, which protects places on the earth that are of great cultural or natural value. Any country in the world can ask for protection from UNESCO. The countries send a list of places to the World Heritage Committee. Once a year, the World Heritage Committee meets and votes on which places to protect. When they choose a place, it officially becomes a World Heritage Site. 23. What’s special about Edinburgh’s Old Town? A. It has no new buildings. B. It’s a World Heritage Site. C. It’s in the capital city of Scotland. D. It has the oldest streets in the world. 24. The young boy Abu Simbel . A. grew up to be a great engineer B. took part in building the temples C. lived in Egypt about 3,000 years ago D. was the first to discover the hidden temples 25. The last paragraph mainly deals with . A. how a World Heritage Site is chosen B. why the World Heritage Committee was formed C. how often the World Heritage Committee works D. why countries ask for protection from UNESCO Researchers at Baylor University were curious about whether there was a way to improve student performance. In particular, they wondered whether a technique called “targeted memory reactivation (激活,重启)” (TMR) could be useful for studying. In TMR, certain signals reactivate memories formed during the day while a person is asleep. The researchers focused on music. A few university students took part in the experiment. They were asked to take a class on microeconomics (微观经济学), which they would be tested on the following day. During the lesson, all participants listened to three pieces of classical music. Then they spent the night in the sleep lab and while they were fast asleep, sounds were played in the background. For half of the participants, the sound was white noise, but the other half were played the three pieces they had listened to while studying. The next day they took the test and the test scores showed that the students who had been exposed to the “study music” while sleeping performed better on the test. There were a few reasons the research group selected three classical music pieces as study music. Such music is much less distracting than music with lyrics (歌词). And the researchers also wanted to make sure that the music they played had obvious melodies (旋律), so that the brain could more easily form connections between the music and the study material. The three pieces they chose fit the bill perfectly. Unfortunately, music could improve test scores the next day, but after a few months the music listeners were back to the same level as the students who slept with white noise in the background. Besides, the effect seemed to be more noticeable for female students than it was for men. Either way, listening to music at night is a study trick that could just make the difference between a passing or failing test for some people. 26. What did the Baylor researchers try to find out? A. The benefits of classical music. B. Why TMR is helpful for studying. C. Whether music can improve study. D. Ways to ensure a good night’s sleep. 27. What did the participants do during the experiment? A. They played different music in class. B. They listened to study music while taking the test. C. They put on the music of their choice while sleeping. D. They listened to either white noise or study music at night. 28. Why were these pieces of classical music selected as study music? A. They are related to the study material. B. They have distinct melodies. C. They have memorable lyrics. D. They are familiar to students. 29. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The effect of music wore off over time. B. The study trick made no difference to tests. C. White noise has the same effect as classical music. D. Male students benefited greatly from the study trick. Coming face-to-face with your inadequacies (缺点) can be painful, to say the least. ___30___It even makes you question yourself. Be objective about the criticism Before you jump to conclusions and begin to challenge the other person’s opinion, take a step back and look at it objectively. However, when you feel ready, it could be worth revisiting the subject with the person who criticized you. Even if you don’t agree with their advice, thank them and promise to consider it. A. Most of us are pretty stubborn. B. There is no doubt that change is necessary. C. But it’s best to avoid getting into an argument. D. Being sensitive to criticism leads you nowhere. E. I hadn’t decided whether to fly home for the new year yet. Although I had missed the holiday the year before, and I didn’t want to miss it two years in a row, I didn’t have the money for the ticket, plus I wasn’t sure I could get enough time off from my job. All that wondering changed when my mom called. She got right to the point: “Your grandmother isn’t doing well. I decided I should fly out there for the new year.” Mom was an only child, so that made sense to me. But I was not ready for what I heard next. “We decided you would want to come along so I covered your ticket.” We arrived as scheduled. Mom was anxious to see her parents, especially her mother, who was really sick. After saying hello to them, we settled in the living room. Grandpa helped Grandma lie down again and told us we would have a big lunch at noon. He went into the kitchen. Mom walked up and down in the living room. Finally, I asked her what the matter was. “He can’t cook,” she said, wondering. “How’s he supposed to fix a holiday meal for us?”I tried to reason with her. “Can’t you smell dinner? It smells good to me. Grandma is upstairs resting. Grandpa is the only one who could be cooking.” But we couldn’t see through the kitchen door. She had an idea. “Let’s go out to the front door and see from outside the window what’s going on inside. Then we will know who is really cooking.” Grandpa was very hard of hearing, so he didn’t hear us leave. It was a crazy plan, but I followed her around the house to the kitchen windows. There we watched Grandpa fill water glasses, make coffee and do everything skillfully. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Looking at the nice food on the table, Mom asked, “When did you learn to cook?” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null 白城市实验高级中学2023-2024学年高一下学期7月期末 英语试题 姓名:__________ 班级:__________ 考号:__________ 第一节 听力部分 1. What does the man think of Mary? For many British people, that can apply to institutions and objects that represent their country’s past-age-old castles, splendid homes.. and red phone boxes.(有时候真的很难放手。 Inglis said phone boxes called to mind an age when things were built to last.(英格利斯说,电话亭让人想起了一个东西经久耐用的时代)可知,电话亭正在卷土重来,以提醒人们一个历史时期。 After becoming an important part of many British streets, the phone boxes began disappearing in the 1980s, with the rise of the mobile phone sending most of them away to the junkyards.(在成为英国许多街道的重要组成部分后,电话亭在20世纪80年代开始消失,随着移动电话的兴起,大部分电话亭被扔到了垃圾场)可知,电话亭在20世纪80年代开始停止使用是因为它们输给了新技术。 As Inglis and, later other businessmen, got to work, repurposed phone boxes began reappearing in cities and villages as people found new uses for them. Today, they are once again a familiar sight, playing roles that are often just as important for the community as their original purpose.(随着英格利斯和后来的其他商人开始工作,改装后的电话亭开始在城市和乡村重新出现,人们发现了它们的新用途。 In rural areas, where ambulances can take a relatively long time to arrive, the phone boxes have taken on a lifesaving role.(在农村地区,救护车要花相当长的时间才能到达,电话亭就起到了拯救生命的作用)以及第七段Others also looked at the phone boxes and saw business opportunities.(其他人也在电话亭寻找商机)可推断出,电话亭之所以变得流行,主要是因为它们的角色和功能发生了变化。故选C。 A “secretive” new species of frog has been discovered on the forest floor in India’s Western Ghat mountain range. C 20. C 21. B 22. 根据第三段“A group of Indian and US researchers first came across the local species hidden in leaf-litter as part of a wider project to look for new frogs, lizards and snakes in the richly biodiverse region and stored it in a jar for later study. Genetic testing and a closer look at its shape, colouring and other features have shown that it doesn’t match any existing species.(一组印度和美国的研究人员首次发现了隐藏在落叶中的当地物种,这是在生物多样性丰富的地区寻找新的青蛙、蜥蜴和蛇的更广泛项目的一部分,并将其储存在一个罐子中,以备日后研究。基因测试和对其形状、颜色和其他特征的仔细观察表明,它与任何现存物种都不匹配)”可知,新发现的青蛙被装在罐子里,对基因测试、形状、颜色和其他特征进行了进一步研究。故选C项。 【20题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“While many species new to science are frequently sorted as endangered at once, it is too early to say whether the starry dwarf frog is threatened. “They are very secretive,” says Shanker, adding that the team didn’t know the size of its population. (虽然许多科学界新发现的物种经常同时被列为濒危物种,但现在说星状侏儒蛙是否受到威胁还为时过早。“它们非常隐秘,”Shanker说,并补充说该团队不知道其数量)”可知,新物种常被归类为濒危物种,而且这种新青蛙的数量是未知的,所以它们值得特别关注。故选C项。 【21题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“But the new species was found in a reserved forest, meaning it will enjoy a degree of protection by Indian government agencies.(但这种新物种是在一片保护区中发现的,这意味着它将受到印度政府机构的一定程度的保护)”可知,这种新的青蛙物种正在受政府保护,因此它面临的危险可能较小。 根据第一段“A “secretive” new species of frog has been discovered on the forest floor in India’s Western Ghat mountain range. Named the starry dwarf frog after the markings on its dark brown back, it is just 2 centimeters long.(在印度西高特山脉的森林地面上发现了一种“神秘”的青蛙新物种。这只星状侏儒蛙因其深棕色背部的斑纹而得名,它只有2厘米长)”以及第二段“The frog, whose closest relatives are a group of species native to India and Sri Linka, is the only member of an ancient lineage dating back to millions of years ago, according to researchers from India and the US.(据印度和美国的研究人员称,这种青蛙的近亲是一组原产于印度和斯里兰卡的物种,是数百万年前古老谱系的唯一成员)”可知,本文主要介绍了在印度发现的不同于现有青蛙种类的新青蛙品种,推测文章可能出自一篇科学报告。故选D项。 What do the following places have in common: the Serengeti Desert, Edinburgh’s Old Town and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve? A. how a World Heritage Site is chosen B. why the World Heritage Committee was formed C. how often the World Heritage Committee works D. why countries ask for protection from UNESCO 【答案】23. C 24. D 25. 根据第三段“Edinburgh’s Old Town is in the capital city of Scotland.(爱丁堡老城位于苏格兰的首都)”可知,Edinburgh’s Old Town位于苏格兰的首都是它的特别之处。 根据倒数第四段中的“Stories tell of a young boy named Abu Simbel who found the temples.(故事讲述的是一个名叫Abu Simbel的小男孩发现了这些神庙)”和倒数第三段中的“Today, they are called the Abu Simbel Temples, in memory of the young boy who first found them.(今天,它们被称为Abu Simbel神庙,以纪念第一个发现它们的小男孩)”可知,Abu Simbel是第一个发现那些寺庙的人。 根据最后一段中“The countries send a list of places to the World Heritage Committee. Once a year, the World Heritage Committee meets and votes on which places to protect. When they choose a place, it officially becomes a World Heritage Site.(这些国家向世界遗产委员会提交了一份遗产地名单。世界遗产委员会每年召开一次会议,投票决定哪些地方需要保护。当他们选择一个地方时,它就正式成为世界遗产)”可知,本段主要讲述了世界遗产地是怎样被选出来的。故选A。 Researchers at Baylor University were curious about whether there was a way to improve student performance. 26 C 27. D 28. B 29. In your discomfort, you may feel the urge to criticize the other person angrily and defend yourself. ___32___ 3. Be open to the idea of change ___33___And it may be because of a concept called “cognitive dissonance” that can prevent us from changing even when that’s what we need most. 4. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Looking at the nice food on the table, Mom asked, “When did you learn to cook?” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 There we watched Grandpa fill water glasses, make coffee and do everything skillfully. Though he was slow because of old age, he cut, cook and mixed smoothly. He was even cooking a big Turkey in the oven. Mom was surprised to see all these. Then Grandpa brought the water, then the coffee, rolls and individual lettuce salads out to the dinning room. Speaking directly to my mom, he said, “I am going to get your mother up and bring her down to eat with us. You two go sit down at the dining room table.” So we did. Looking at the nice food on the table, Mom asked, “When did you learn to cook?” Grandpa didn’t answer my mother’s question right away. Instead, he smiled and handed out food to each of us. I could tell he was very happy that we were here. Then he said that since Grandma was unable to cook due to health reasons, he began to learn to cook little by little. It made my mother and I feel at ease and less worried about their daily lives. I can’t help but have a kind of admiration for grandpa. Love and responsibility can change people, even in the old age. 词汇激活 行为类 ①对某人说话:speak to sb/talk to sb ②一起吃饭:eat with sb/have dinner with sb/eat together ③回答:answer/reply 情绪类 ①开心的:happy/delighted/joyful ②敬佩:admiration/appreciation/respect 【点睛】[高分句型1] Though he was slow because of old age, he cut, cook and mixed smoothly.(运用了though引导的让步状语从句) [高分句型2] Then he said that since Grandma was unable to cook due to health reasons, he began to learn to cook little by little.(运用了that引导的宾语从句及since引导的原因状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
