If you want to find a place of interest to spend your summer vacation, think about the following locations.
The Nautilus Maldives
Opened in 2019,this independent,Maldivian-owned resort(度假村)is the island nation’s only Relais & Chateaux property. It’s located off a beautiful sandy island in the Indian Ocean, which has been officially recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its stunning coral reefs and various marine life. Splendid, oversized accommodations are balanced with plain inners, intended to be in harmony with the surrounding natural scenery.
Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives
Sustainability lies at the core of the unique, luxurious resort in the Maldives’ isolated Laamu Atoll. The three-storied overwater buildings are constructed of local materials, which brings money to nearby island communities. Follow it up with a meal made from produce grown in the islands gardens without using artificial chemicals and freshly caught seafood from local fishermen. Finally, treat yourself to one of the many spa treatments at the Six Senses Spa overlooking the ocean.
Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Built along a small island, the overwater buildings at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora rise over the island, blue waters. Inners are simple, inspired by the natural style of a traditional Polynesian village, and all have indoor-outdoor spaces with ladders for access to the lake. Choose from one of three views: beach, lake, or, our favorite, mountain.
Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, Qatar
On a private island twenty minutes by boat from Qatar’s capital city, this resort houses the Persian Gulf’s 11 Maldivian-inspired overwater buildings on a scale only found in the Middle East. Think: two and three-bedroom units (beginning at 2,500 square feet), each equipped with facilities like a private full-sized swimming pool.
1. What is the building feature of The Nautilus Maldives?
A. Its building material is sand. B. It is integrated with nature.
C. It is designed by UNESCO. D. Its rooms are not big enough.
2. Which resort best suits people who want organic food?
A. The Nautilus Maldives
B. Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives
C. Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, Qatar
D. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia
3. What do these four resorts have in common?
A. They are built overwater. B. They offer spa service.
C. They are on private islands. D. They adopt Polynesian style.

All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”.
Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom’s death in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.”
All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen cases about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale. The Met opened in 1880 and has since expanded to more than 2.5 million square feet—“the size of about 3,000 average New York apartments”. The “salmon run (鲑鱼回游) of visitors” that goes up the Grand Staircase every morning when the museum opens adds up to a crowd of nearly 7 million visitors a year.
As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. I think that “sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that”. In a Vermeer portrait of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist captured “that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom’s hospital room.”
As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not “about art, but from it” and attaining peace into art. This is art appreciation at a deep level.
4. What sets All the Beauty in the World apart from other books written by Met staffers?
A. His writing perspective. B. His analysis of visitors.
C. His focus on MET’s history. D. His introduction to artworks.
5. What caused Bringley to change his job according to his words?
A. His hobby from childhood. B. His failure as a journalist.
C. Loss of his beloved brother. D. His ambition of being great.
6. What is Para. 4 mainly about regarding the book?
A. An account of Met’s development.
B. An introduction of recognized artists.
C. Bringley’s interpretations of individual artworks.
D. Bringley’s review of the impact of technology on art.
7. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. Learn from Art, Find Peace B. Appreciate Life, Know Art
C Little-known Facts about the Met D. Inner Worlds of the Famous Artists
C
One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
8. What does the underlined sentence of Para. 1 imply about tourism expansion?
A. Its technical challenge. B. Its positive social effects.
C. Its potential drawbacks. D. Its undervalued profitability.
9. Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Para. 2?
A To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
10. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
11. What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Cultural diversity. B. Off-track destinations.
C. Stable market. D. Strengthened management.
D
Power often boosts an employee’s creativity because being powerful liberates the individual from restrictions. However, new research shows that employees who are not in positions of power can become more creative when given time to “warm up” to a task by engaging in the creative task more than once.
“This is important because people with more power are able to express their creative ideas more than those with less power, which leads to a rich-get-richer dynamic that strengthens these power imbalances.” said Brian Lucas, assistant professor in the Cornell University. “Understanding ways to boost the creativity of lower power workers can help them find the right way to deal with this low-power disadvantage,” Lucas said.
Lucas and his colleagues conducted three studies to reach their conclusion. In the first study, they divided the creative idea generation session into two rounds consisting of a one-minute “warm up” followed by a second round in which the participants could take as long as they wanted. Participants’ sense of power was manipulated (操纵) through role assignments, where they were either given a leadership role with control over resources or an employee role without control over resources. The study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the warm-up round. There was no difference, though, in creativity in the second round.
In the second study, the researchers gave them a different creative task and increased the number of rounds from two sessions to five, taking as long as they like to complete the task. Consistent with the first study, the study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the first round. But the creativity of low-power individuals caught up to the creativity of the high-power individuals after the first round. Results of the third study demonstrated that a different creativity task can also warm-up low-power people for an unrelated creativity task.
“Given the high value of creative ideas for organizations, it is important to develop approaches that empower all employees to tap their creative potential,” Lucas said. “The low power warm-up effect suggests a simple intervention that does just this and overcomes power imbalance in the workplace: when pursuing creative work, let employees warm up first.”
12. Why is it important to boost lower-power workers’ creativity according to Lucas?
A. To enhance competition. B. To encourage cooperation.
C. To navigate power imbalance. D. To build a rich-get-richer dynamic
13. How did the participants feel the power in the first study?
A. By competing with leaders. B. Through a random role selection.
C. By working in different conditions. D. Through confusing role assignments.
14. What can best describe the relationship between power and creativity from the studies?
A. It’s fixed. B. It’s dynamic. C. It’s unpredictable. D. It’s casual.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards low power warm-up effect?
A. Encouraging. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.
No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and… slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran!
Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, "How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.
I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home, I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew… until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents. I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way.
I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away — as if punishing myself could undo things.
But inside me a voice said: “I would tell everything to Grandpa.”
“I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.

根据“The Nautilus Maldives”中“Splendid, oversized accommodations are balanced with plain inners, intended to be in harmony with the surrounding natural scenery.”(华丽的,超大的住所与朴素的内部平衡,旨在与周围的自然景观和谐相处。)
根据“Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives”部分中“Follow it up with a meal made from produce grown in the islands gardens without using artificial chemicals and freshly caught seafood from local fishermen.”(接下来的一餐是用岛上花园种植的农产品做成的,不使用人工化学品,也不使用当地渔民新鲜捕获的海鲜。)
根据“The Nautilus Maldives”中“ It’s located off a beautiful sandy island in the Indian Ocean”(它坐落在印度洋上一个美丽的沙岛上);“Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives”部分中“The three-storied overwater buildings are constructed of local materials”(这个三层水上建筑采用当地材料建造);“Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia ”部分中“ the overwater buildings at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora rise over the island, blue waters”(四季度假村博拉博拉岛的水上建筑越过了岛屿,蓝色的海水);“Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, Qatar ”部分中“the Persian Gulf’s 11 Maldivian-inspired overwater buildings on a scale only found in the Middle East”(波斯湾的11座马尔代夫风格的水上建筑,其规模只能在中东找到)可知,这四个度假村的共同特点是它们都是建在水上的。

A His hobby from childhood.
C. Little-known Facts about the Met D. Inner Worlds of the Famous Artists
A 5. C 6. C 7. A
根据第二段中的“Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s ‘guard’s-eye view’ is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. (Bringley并不是唯一一位写过该机构的大都会艺术博物馆工作人员。但Bringley的‘保安视角’是独一无二的,他真诚地呈现了自己的个人故事。)”可知,作者独一无二的写作视角是让这本书有别于其他大都会艺术博物馆工作人员所写的书的地方。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“After his brother Tom’s death in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which ‘I was happy to be going nowhere’. (2008年,他的哥哥Tom去世后,Bringley放弃了记者的工作,转而从事一份‘我很高兴哪儿也去不了’的工作。)”可知,Bringley决定换工作是因为他心爱的哥哥去世了。故选C项。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段的“As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. I think that ‘sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that’. (尽管这些事实很有趣,但Bringley对数十幅个人绘画、照片、雕塑和古代文物的反思使这本书成为对艺术力量的致敬。我认为‘有时我们需要得到许可才能停止和崇拜事物,而一件艺术品给了我们这一点’。)”以及下面具体的例子可知,本段主要讲Bringley对个人艺术作品的解读。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term ‘art appreciation’. (Patrick Bringley的回忆录《这世间一切的美》讲述了他在纽约大都会艺术博物馆当保安的10年,为‘艺术欣赏’一词带来了新的含义。)”和最后一段“As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not ‘about art, but from it’ and finding peace into art. This is art appreciation at a deep level. 故选A项。
A. To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
10. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
11. What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Cultural diversity. B. Off-track destinations.
C. Stable market. D. Strengthened management.
C 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.(人们可能会认为,旅游业日益增长的需求只会给接待度假者的国家带来好处。事实上,度假业的长期前景被描绘成一幅美好的画面。每个月都有新旅馆在某处落成。而且每个月都会有一个被岩石环绕的太平洋岛屿被宣传为“地球上最后的天堂”)”可知,划线的句子暗示了旅游业的发展潜在的缺点。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.(然而,这种增长的规模和速度似乎会破坏游客想要享受的东西。过度拥挤的海滩和不计其数的酒店组成的混凝土丛林已经开始失去吸引力。那些没有旅游经验的国家在急于赚钱的过程中受害最大。近年来,尼泊尔的森林充满了野生动物和稀有花卉,被游客视为又一个未被破坏的天堂,随之而来的是珍贵的树木和植物遭到破坏)”可知,作者在第2段提到“尼泊尔”来支持论点。故选A。
根据第三段“The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.(曾经的农民现在是一些跨国组织的仆人;他不再是自己的主人了。曾经是他的背承受着疼痛;现在,他的笑容被利用了。毫无疑问,他在想,在自己的村子里种地是不是更快乐)”可知,旅游业对农民的主要影响是生计改变。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit.(未来十年,旅游业的发展方式将决定它的命运,也将决定我们都想去旅游的国家的命运)”可知,加强管理会决定旅游业的未来。故选D。

C 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第二段中Lucas的话“This is important because when people with more power are able to express their creative ideas more than those with less power, which leads to a rich-get-richer dynamic that strengthens these power imbalances.(这一点很重要,因为当拥有更多权力的人能够比那些权力较小的人更多地表达他们的创造性想法时,这就会导致富者更富的动态,从而加强这些权力不平衡)”和“Understanding ways to boost the creativity of lower power workers can help them find the right way to deal with this low-power disadvantage (了解如何提高低权力员工的创造力,可以帮助他们找到应对这种低权力劣势的正确方法)”可推知,卢卡斯认为提高低权力员工的创造力可以帮助他们应对这种低权力的劣势,即有助于找到应对权力不平衡的正确方法。
根据第三段中“Participants’ sense of power was manipulated (操纵) through role assignments, where they were either given a leadership role with control over resources or an employee role without control over resources.(通过角色分配来操控参与者的权力感,他们要么被赋予控制资源的领导角色,要么被赋予没有控制资源的员工角色)”可知,在第一项研究中,通过给参与者分配不同的角色,让他们在不同的条件下工作,从而感受到权力。
根据第三段中“The study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the warm-up round. There was no difference, though, in creativity in the second round.(研究发现,在热身赛中,权力大的人比权力小的人更有创造力。不过,在第二轮比赛中,创造力没有差异)”和第四段中“Consistent with the first study, the study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the first round. But the creativity of low-power individuals caught up to the creativity of the high-power individuals after the first round.(与第一项研究一致,研究发现,在第一轮比赛中,权力大的人比权力小的人更有创造力。但在第一轮之后,权力小的人的创造力赶上了权力大的人)”可知,在第一轮比赛中,权力大的人比权力小的人更有创造力,但在第一轮之后,权力小的人的创造力赶上了权力大的人,说明权力和创造力的关系是动态的。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Given the high value of creative ideas for organizations, it is important to develop approaches that empower all employees to tap their creative potential,” Lucas said. “The low power warm-up effect suggests a simple intervention that does just this and overcomes power imbalance in the workplace: when pursuing creative work, let employees warm up first.” (卢卡斯说:“鉴于创意对组织的高价值,开发能让所有员工发挥创造力潜能的方法非常重要。低权力热身效应表明了一种简单的干预措施,它正是这样做的,并克服了职场中的权力不平衡:在进行创造性工作时,先让员工热热身。”)”可知,作者对于低权力热身效应是持鼓励态度的。故选A项。

But he just listened while I continued talking. “I was wrong. I hate myself for what I did”, I told him, with my head down. I didn’t know what to do to make things right. I had been afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me. Finally my grandpa said, “What would you do if you were her?”After a while, I replied, “One solution is to tell her that I am sorry and offer to fix her window.”
Hearing the decision, grandpa smiled. “Doing what is right is not always easy,” he said, handing me the phone, “I am proud of you.” He did not make me do it. It was always my choice. As it turned out, Mrs. Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends. “Admitting what you are not proud of is the hardest thing,” said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others trust and respect you.”
