(2024·湖北武汉·中考真题)The silence of the pond (池塘) was broken by the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducked (扎入) into the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the boat.
On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. “We had to ask a young person.”
Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group was from a moment of Sandy, a retired (退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with a slogan (标语):
“OVER 65, IF YOU’RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION.”
Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.

(2022·湖北武汉·中考真题)All through grade school, I got extra help with schoolwork. If I got a D, I was very happy. If I got a C-minus (C-), I had achieved greatness. A’s and B’s were a kingdom I could never enter.
Once my teacher, Miss Mills, had given me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, “Wow! This time, I’m going to pass.” The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was carpet. I wrote that one down: c-a-r-p-e-t. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came neighbor-I wrote down the letter n. Then rhythm-I knew there was an r. Suburban-I wrote s-u-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D-minus. Where did the words go?
Some people talk about information sliding off your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever (未能充分发挥学习潜力者).
Now I know I have dyslexia (诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see the as teh, and bird as brid. My brain learns differently. A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I know that even if I learn differently, I can still be filled with greatness.
Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and co-author of children’s books, I tell children that everyone has something special inside. It’s our job to find out what that is and get it out, and give it to the world as a gift.

(2022·湖北武汉·中考真题)Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).
In one video, for example, Boris shared how he had learned the Chinese word dongxi. He translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced one theory (说法) about how dongxi came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say qu mai dongxi. you’d be saying, “I’m going to buy things.”
Some other videos show his reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional costume, which are quite welcome among his 40, 000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Boris said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.”

(2024·湖北武汉·二模)Life’s greatest lesson for Granny Hu can be found in a cup of the green tea she has grown and spent most of her life: the bitter comes before the sweet, and she has known both. She was good at growing things from at least age 14. She loved the soil and worked in her gardens until she was 113. “My grandma is quick-witted and hard-working. She was better at planting crops than others, so in the years when there were shortages of food she was able to support the family,” his grandson said. Granny Hu is the oldest person in her village and she experienced all the hardships during the life. “I have lost my husband, my children and my brothers, but I couldn’t lose myself in sadness. Luckily, I can always find love in my family and that is how I was encouraged to carry on.”
Another centenarian (百岁老人) , Granny Yang, gave birth to eight children. “In the darkest days, we didn’t have enough food to support the big family, so I went into the mountains to look for food to feed my children instead of giving them away, as many people did,” she said, “no one in my family was allowed to shout or scream at each other. My children grew up in peace.” What’s more, she helped her children get a better education. “Education is the best soil to support children’s growth and will improve themselves for a lifetime.”
The poor life inspires a strong wish for change. That’s the most important lesson that Grandpa Dong said he has learned in life. Like most older people in China, he expected to spend his life farming. However, because of the wars, he was driven out of his farm. He spent nearly 10 years to make his way home. He did business and he finally made a comfortable living. This 108-year-old man gives his advice to others: “Don’t be afraid of change.”
All these centenarians have one thing in common—The quickest way to happiness and long life is to do nothing negative. Have a joyful heart and be kind to others. If you want to live up to be 100 years old, try their ways!

(2024·湖北武汉·一模)Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad?” He tearfully asked me. What book was so attractive and made a boy so sad? I wanted to read it.
The story is set on a faraway island, where a robot named Roz learns to live and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own, the first to influence him with the mix of tragedy (悲剧) and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final’ scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. I tried to explain how sadness can improve the meaning of happiness, ★ .

A.Her childish expressions. B.Her robotic power.
C.Her struggling experiences. D.Her adventurous spirit.
25.What would be the best title for the passage?

(2024·湖北武汉·三模)When Bruce first met Beethoven’s Moonlight over 50 years ago, he lost himself in it at once and dreamed of becoming a pianist. Although a piano was absent at home then, he learned to play Beethoven (贝多芬) by ear. Unbelievably, Bruce entered the Royal Academy of Arts at 16, which marked the beginning of his successful pianist journey. But that’s not all. Bruce’s wife works at Elephants World, a reserve (自然保护区) devoted to the care of rescued (救援) elephants. These elephants have worked for humans all their life and many are blind or disabled from being treated badly. After learning about that, Bruce wanted to make the effort to carry something heavy himself. Finally, Bruce and his wife were allowed by the manager to bring a piano into the reserve, bringing music to the elephants’ lives. It was truly magical.
At the beginning, when Bruce started playing, it was hard to hear the piano above the sounds of nature and the elephants chewing (咀嚼) grass. However, everything changed when a blind elephant stopped eating and focused on his playing. It hit Bruce that this elephant had a love for music. From that moment on, Bruce was no longer worried about influencing their pеace.
Now Bruce continues to play for these elephants in the reserve. Surprisingly, it’s the sad male elephants who show the most fascination with the music. He believes it has a calming effect.
