What is perhaps less obvious is one answer to the problem: the healing(治愈)power of poetry to make us feel more connected to others. Here things get personal. I first got involved in how poetry can support our emotional well-being after I wrote a memoir, Black Rainbow: How Words Healed Me My .Journey Through Depression, in 2014 about how poetry helped me through two serious periods of depression. Since then , I've been running Healing Words poetry activities for mental health charities and prisons, and have discovered first-hand the lovely feeling of companionship(友情) which poetry can bring. Poetry lets us connect with other people who have experienced similar emotions. We're not alone in our despair or delight. When we have a poem by our side, it feels like we're being accompanied by a friend: an authorial arm is wrapped(缠绕)around our shoulders. I remember one woman starting to cry as she read Derek Walcott's poem " Love After Love" during a workshop held at my local hospital in West London. Fighting through tears, she eventually said, "I feel understood." Everyone in the room knew exactly what she meant. She had, in Walcott's phrase, struggled to " love again the stranger who was yourself" . The poet's invitation to " Sit. Feast on your life" was the comfort she needed, in a language which spoke to her, to imagine loving herself in a way she had always found hard. Poetry had worked its magic.unlocking a feeling of inner connection, and in turn a connection to all of us sitting in the workshop. Given my own experience, I think having a poem to keep us company can help us all feel a greater sense of belonging. 1. What does the author suggest doing to fight against loneliness? A.Researching the problem. B. Appreciating poetry. C.Strengthening respect. D. Connecting with others. 2. How does having a poem at hand make you feel according to the author? A. Socially accepted. B. Literarily knowledgeable C.Financially admired. D. Emotionally comfortable. 3. Why did the woman start to cry in the workshop? A. The poem touched her soul. B. She was forced to read the poem. C. She struggled to understand others. D. She failed to work out the poem's magic. 4. What does the author mainly want to tell us? A. The healing power of poems cures illnesses. B. Reading can make us feel independent of others C. Poetry can improve our emotional well-being. D. Connection leads to a great sense of belonging. 四、七选五。(建议用时: 7分钟) Writing poetry can seem frightening if you do not feel you are naturally creative. But with the right inspiration and approach , you can also write a poem that you can be proud to share with others in class or with your friends. ●1.__________You can start your poem by focusing on a particular subject or concept that you find fascinating. This can give your poem a clear goal or objective, For example , you may decide to write a poem around the theme of " love and friendship". ●Choose a poetic form. Get your creative juices flowing by picking a form for your poem. There are many different poetic forms that you can use, from free verse to sonnet. 2.__________ Choose one poetic form and stick to that structure so your reader feels connected to your poem. ●Use concrete imagery(具体的意象). Avoid abstract imagery and go for concrete descriptions in your poem. You should always try to describe something using the five senses: smell , taste, touch, sight, and sound. Using concrete imagery will make your reader concentrate on the world of your poem. 3.__________ ●Include literary devices. Literary devices like metaphor and simile add variety and depth to your poetry. 4.__________Try to use some throughout your poem, varying them so you do not use only metaphors or only similes in your writing. ●Read the poem out loud. Once you have completed a draft(草稿) of the poem, you should read it aloud to yourself. 5.__________Pay attention to how each line of your poem flows into the next. Keep a pen close by so you can mark any lines or words that sound awkward or jumbled. A. Pick a specific theme or idea. B. Notice how the words sound on the page. C. You may go for some that you find easy to use. D. And it will also make images come alive for them. E. Using them can make your poem stand out to your readers.
