(2024·辽宁丹东·二模)Have you ever done or thought about volunteering before? Volunteering means spending time and effort helping somebody or something. In my case, I’ve volunteered at an animal shelter (收容所) to help feed and walk dogs.
Back in 2021, some friends and I went to an animal shelter outside of Beijing. There, I was able to give food to the animals. There were not only dogs at the shelter, such as foxes and chickens. Our main goal was to help the dogs by giving them walks. Many of the dogs were kept in big cages (笼子) along with other dogs and ate from a big bowl together. I felt a bit sad for the dogs since many of them looked old and needed a bath.
However, I made sure to give one of the dogs a good walk. I remember it was a big black dog with curly hair. The dog was very gentle, but it did not want to walk very far. It was also a bit shy and just wanted to look at the other dogs. Still, when I took out a tennis ball to play fetch (捡球), it really enjoyed it. I liked watching the dog run through a group of ducks trying to get the ball back.
Volunteering for the dog shelter is helpful for both the workers and the dogs. I really enjoyed my time there. I highly recommend it!

(2024·辽宁锦州·三模)①One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn’t notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I made a terrible pie, I really enjoyed the process.
②The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
③ But in this busy world, we see many successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.
④Don’t always compare yourself with others. Success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power.
⑤Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
⑥Reward yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them.

(2024·辽宁鞍山·三模)Where was that cashier (收银员)? I quickly looked at my watch. I hardly had enough time to eat a sandwich and rush back to work.
I looked around the nearly empty restaurant, but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman stood wiping (擦拭) the far end of the counter (柜台). She looked at me coldly with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, getting angry. I’d been standing there for at least three minutes!
Controlling my anger, I remembered Mom’s words. “Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, just think about what is missing. If someone is unkind, then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide whatever the situation needs.”
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How should I “be what’s missing”? What was missing was service. Maybe I should just jump behind the counter and take my own order.
Just then the woman walked slowly toward me. “May I help you?” she asked, still coldly. She looked so tired. No doubt, she was overworked.
I took a deep breath. With Mom’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order and smiled. “How are you today?”
My question seemed to surprise her. She eyed me for a second before answering. “Not too good.” “I’m sorry,” I said. “I hope it gets better starting right now.”
She almost smiled as she looked at me. “Thanks. I hope you’re right. I should also say sorry to you. I have worked a whole day without rest.”
I thought to myself as I ate my sandwich. We’re all the same, really. We have problems and angers. We get tired and we hurt. We need to be nicer to each other.

(2024·辽宁盘锦·三模)Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin (柏林) Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look because of my job. Behind it, the person is trying to find out who exactly I teach...the animals?
I help the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and confident speaking English. Why do they need English? Who do they speak English with?
The panda keepers need to talk to the crowd of international visitors and to Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas in English. As you know, English is widely spoken in the world while German isn’t. They also need to be ready to give interviews in English with international reporters. This is why they need an English trainer.
So what are they learning? Basically, they are learning how to describe a panda’s life. And here’s what I’ve learned from them so far:
Note 1: Pandas eat bamboo, lots of bamboo! They can eat up to 30 kilograms a day, and when they’re not eating, they’re sleeping.
Note 2: The two pandas Mengmeng and Jiaoqing live in separate enclosures (围场) at the zoo because that is how they live in nature. Pandas live on their own, not in groups.
Note 3: Giant pandas come from the cool, foggy mountains of Southwest China.
Note 4: They are endangered, with fewer than 2,000 of them living in the wild today.
It’s been an honor to watch the panda program develop and to see the pandas get used to their new home. As a little girl, I wanted to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I’m living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.
