His artistic mother — a calligrapher and musician — had the greater influence on him. Despite not speaking English, he moved to the US at the age of 18 to study at Pennsylvania, MIT and Harvard. He worked as a research scientist for the US government during World War Two, and went on to work as an architect, founding his own firm in 1955. He carried on working well into old age, creating one of his most famous masterpieces — the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar — in his 80s. Although Pei worked mostly in the United States, he will always be remembered for a European project: his redevelopment of the Louvre Museum in Paris in the 1980s. Pei was the first foreign architect to work on the Louvre in its long history, and initially his designs were strongly opposed. But in the end, the French — and everyone else — were won over. His glass pyramid outside the Louvre, completed in 1989, is now one of Paris’ most famous landmarks. He has designed buildings, hotels, schools and other structures across North America, Asia and Europe. His other works include Dallas City Hall and Japan’s Miho Museum. His style was influenced by his love of Islamic (伊斯兰) architecture. His favoured building materials were glass and steel, with a combination of concrete. He won a variety of awards and prizes for his buildings, including the AIA Gold Medal, the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture. In 1983 Pei was given the fifth Pritzker Architecture Prize for giving the 20th century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms. He used his $100,000 prize money to start a scholarship fund for Chinese students to study architecture in America. In person, Pei was always neatly dressed, good-tempered, charming and unusually humble. In 2019, I. M. Pei, known as the last master of modern architecture, passed away at the age of 102. 4. How did the author develop paragraph 1? A. By giving examples. B. In space order. C. In time order. D. By making comparison. 5. What can we say about Pei’s glass pyramid outside the Louvre? A. Its design was objected at first. B. It is Pei’s first European project. C. It won a lot of prizes in France. D. It is the only famous landmark in Paris. 6. Which words best describe Ieoh Ming Pei? A. Kind and patient. B. Creative and generous. C. Intelligent and outgoing. D. Interesting and proud. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Contributions Made by I. M. Pei B. Prizes Awarded to I. M. Pei C. Masterpieces Created by I. M. Pei D. I. M. Pei, Master of Modern Architecture C LOS ANGELES — There are 69,144 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, the most populous county in the United States, according to the results of the 2022 Homeless Count released by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) on Thursday. The number marks a 4.1 percent rise from the last count in 2020, said the authority, adding that a count was not conducted in 2021 in the county, home to around 10 million people. The results of the count, conducted over three nights in February, also showed 41,980 people were experiencing homelessness in the City of Los Angeles, up 1.7 percent from 2020. The City of Los Angeles is the part of Los Angeles County and also the biggest city in the county. LAHSA said in a news release that this year’s homeless count results offer a clear contrast (差距) to the results between 2018 and 2020, when Los Angeles County saw a 25.9 percent increase and the City of Los Angeles experienced a 32 percent increase. The authority noted that “People in Los Angeles need more affordable homes and economic help to prevent future increases in homelessness.” LAHSA said the agency and its partners have made 84,000 housing placements (安置) over the past five years. Thanks to a 62 percent increase in shelter beds since 2019, more people are in shelter than ever before, said the agency, adding that “shelter is a necessary and key part of our system because bringing people inside protects them from the destructive effects on their health and safety that comes from experiencing unsheltered homelessness.” Los Angeles has one of the highest rates of unemployment and homelessness in the United States, according to usabynumbers.com. The website reported in June that the total number of homeless people in the United States is over 553,000, and that’s 170 out of every 100,000 people experiencing homelessness in the country right now. 8. What can be learned about the County of Los Angeles? A. It’s the biggest county in the US. B. It belongs to the City of Los Angeles. C. 41,980 people there were homeless in 2022. D. It’s the county with the largest population in the US. 9. When was there no data of homeless people in the County? A. In 2019. B. In 2020. C. In 2021. D. In 2022. 10. What can be learned from paragraph 5? A. Homelessness has brought destructive effects to the county. B. All the homeless people in the county have been sheltered. C Housing problems in Los Angeles are worsening. D. Measures have been taken to better homelessness. 11. What is the author’s tone in writing this text? A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Critical. D A new study proves when teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image,” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image. They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14 — 18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.” Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say. “This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders. 12. What inspired Thai to do the research? A. Her self-image. B. Social media posts. C. Her own experiences. D. Her self-confidence. 13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The process of the study. B. The result of the study. C. The volunteers of the study. D. The background of the study. 14. Which word can best replace the underlined word in paragraph 3? A. Discouraging. B. Surprising. C. Disappointing. D. Confusing. 15. What may Thai agree with in the last paragraph? A. Teens cut back screen time easily. B. The approach of the research is applicable. C. Reduced screen time improves appearance. D. The result of the research is beyond expectation. Every time you’re online, you are showered by pictures, articles, links and videos trying to tell their stories. ____16____ There is a range of fake (假的) news. They didn’t protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Stacey attempted to fix the holes, but it was no use. Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new, comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore! One day, Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, “It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can’t you get me new ones?” Stacey was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister’s medicine. She’s sick. Erie, you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Eric’s eyes. “I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Lily! You don’t love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room. After preparing dinner, Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. “I’m sorry, Eric,” she whispered to comfort him. “We’re going through a very tough journey recently. But I’ll get you new shoes in the future.” But Erie refused to listen to her. The next day, when Eric went to class, he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots. As the math teacher. Mrs Fletcher, entered the class, all the students greeted her. “Today, we have a very special friend with us,” she smiled. “Everyone, please welcome Ben, your new classmate.” Soon after, a boy with a pair of crutches(拐杖)entered. The new boy only had one leg, Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Ben was. And they thought Ben must be very shy and sad. His father was a banker. M. Pei B. C 13. A 14. B 15. Naturally自然地。根据下文中的“With the cheese supporting, this frog jumped out of the barrel.” 根据下文中的“With the cheese supporting, this frog jumped out of the barrel.” A. cheese奶酪;B. butter黄油;C. cream奶油;D. ice冰。根据下文中的“With the cheese supporting, this frog jumped out of the barrel.” 故选A项。 Kelsang Pedron was studying at the Beijing Xizang Middle School in 2017 ____36____ she heard that a senior student of the school had gained a place at the Air Force Aviation University ____37____ (learn) how to fly military airplane. They fived a hard life, Eric felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school. Eric’s leather(皮革)boots were worn out. They didn’t know Ben was actually outgoing, confident and optimistic. While they were showing great pity to him, Mrs Fletcher asked Ben to introduce himself. To Eric’s surprise, Ben walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had and apologize to his mom. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 To Eric’s surprise, Ben walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. He talked aloud, happily and humorously. When Ben finished, they all clapped because of his talent for speaking and also his courage, optimism, etc. Throughout the day, Ben smiled at everyone and seemed joyful. Confused about why he wasn’t sad without a leg, Eric approached him and asked him. Ben smiled “I have lost a leg, but I have crutches that take me around. I’m grateful for that.” Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had and apologize to his mom. After school, he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he said to his mom, “Mom, I’m sorry I shouted at you. I should thank you for this pair of leather shoes, instead. Otherwise, I have to go to school barefoot. And I will take good care of Lily.” “Oh, I love you, honey. You are a big boy!” Stacey hugged Eric, and her tears poured down her cheeks silently. /be grateful to sb. 【点睛】[高分句型1] Confused about why he wasn’t sad without a leg, Eric approached him and asked him.(运用了形容词分词作状语和why引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2].
