Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Often it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost. Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries — in both the West and the East. Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were at first from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named after former British military bases If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus — obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force soldiers. Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay (马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road?” The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road. A few roads in Singapore are named by what they look like. There is “Circular Road” for one. Another road Paya Lebar Crescent is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again. 1. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. Many places tend to have more than one name. B. The government is usually the first to name a place. C. A ceremony will be held when a place is named. D. People prefer the place names given by the government. 2. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Change suddenly. B. Change greatly. C. Disappear very slowly. D. Disappear secretly. 3. Which of the following places is named by its shape? A. Raffles Place. B. Selector Airbase. C. Piccadilly Circus. D. Paya Lebar Crescent. B It happened at a bookstore last summer: my son Henry chose reading to his own taste. He was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲) . He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad?” He tearfully asked me. I picked up the book myself. The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz leans to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of sadness and joy. When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him. Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects. We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat for several continents: “the poison tide.” Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas — not just happiness and sadness, but also, hope and disappointment, given the climate-change effect. And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and downturned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel. 4. What drove the author to read The Wild Robot? A. Its interesting characters and ending. B. Henry’s personal recommendation. C. Henry’s emotional reaction to it. D. Its attractive well-designed cover. 5. What is one theme of The Wild Robot Protects? A. Family and community. B. Man-robot relationship. C. Exploration of the deep sea. D. Worries of global issues. 6. What makes Roz in the trilogy special? A. Her struggling experiences. B. Her robotic power. C. Her childlike expressions. D. Her adventurous spirit. 7. Which message does this text seem to communicate? A. Misfortune highlights great art works. B. Reading inspires children’s personal growth. C. Book series interest both adults and kids. D. Robot stories find their own way to children. C Researchers from The University of Queensland (UQ) have helped design a new app to protect birds at risk of extinction across the world by eliminating (消除) language barriers among scientists. The Bird Language Diversity web app will help provide a “birds eye view”, ensuring vital information is shared to improve worldwide conservation. Dr Pablo Negret said the research team analyzed more than 10,000 bird species, and found that 1,587 species have 10 languages or more spoken within their distributions, “Scientific information on species can be spread across different languages, but valuable information can go missing or get lost in translation,” Dr Negret said. “Without enough sharing of information, this can affect the effectiveness of conservation measures.” Take the common bird Pochard for example. It is classified as vulnerable species (易危种) and crosses 108 countries in Europe, Asia and north Africa, where a total of 75 official languages are spoken. The survival of the common Pochard, and so many other species, depends on effective cooperation and policy agreements among people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This app reveals where threatened and migratory birds exist geographically, in relation to the human language spoken in those regions. “We hope the app will encourage researchers and conservation organizations to interact with their peers in other regions, especially if they speak different languages, and be a starting point to allow everyone to work together to protect threatened species,” Dr Negret said. Dr Tatsuya Amano, a researcher and the co-author of the paper, said this work could extend further than bird species. “Any species, whether they're mammals, amphibians (两栖动物), or plants, with a range crossing multiple countries will be impacted by language barriers, as well as species that migrate across different countries, such as marine species and butterflies,” he said. “the impact of poor communication on such an important issue is evident, and it is the reason why we're working hard to improve science communication across languages.” 8. For what purpose is the app developed? A. To improve worldwide conservation B. To educate people about bird species. C. To collect more bird information. D. To promote the bird diversity worldwide. 9. Why is bird Pochard mentioned in the text? A. To present valuable information collected about the bird. B. To highlight the clear communication in its conservation C. To attract people with various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. D. To show the achievements of the scientists from different countries. 10. What is shown on the app? A. The producer of the app. B. The organizations involved. C. The information of new geographers. D. The location of endangered birds. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. Birds Protection Is an Urgency B. A New Bird App Helps Learn Languages C. A New Bird App Spreads Its Wings D. Poor Communication Impacts Cooperation D More people who feel stressed about living in cities have been seeking protection in green spaces for the proven positive impacts on physical and mental health, but the benefits of “blue space” — the sea and coastline, but also rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, even fountains — are less well advertised, yet the science has kept in place for at least a decade: being by water is good for body and mind. “Many of the processes are exactly the same as with green space — with some added benefits,” says Dr Mathew White, a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter. White says there are three established pathways by which the presence of water is positively related to health and happiness. First, there are the beneficial environmental factors, such as less polluted air and more sunlight. Second, people who live by water tend to be more physically active. Third — and this is where blue space seems to have an advantage over other natural environments — water has a psychological recovery effect. When you are sailing, surfing o swimming, says White, “you're really in step with natural forces there.” Catherine Kelly is a wellness practitioner who teaches classes in “mindfulness by the sea” She says the sea has a quality that can make people thoughtful. “To go to the sea means letting go,” says Kelly. “It could be lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail. For somebody else, it could be a wild, empty coast. But there is this really human sense of: 'Oh, look, there's the sea’ — and the shoulders drop.” 12. Why are blue spaces less popular than green spaces? A. Because green spaces are good to people's health. B. Because the benefits of green spaces are better advertised. C. Because green spaces have more benefits than blue spaces. D. Because little research has been done on blue spaces. 13. In what way is blue space better than other natural environments according to White? A. Where there's water, there's fresh air B. Water helps people restore mental health. C. People living near water are healthier. D. The sea can make people lost in deep thought. 14. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. The sea will put you at ease. B. The sea will hurt your shoulder. C. The sea will bring you loneliness. D. The sea will make you feel down. 15. What does the author mainly want to tell us? A. Ways to keep us healthy. B. People in cities prefer green spaces. C. Green spaces have been out of date. D. Blue spaces benefit your body and mind. Festivals and concerts draw huge crowds, and are popular with people. As a result, many engineers, scientists, and designers spend time studying them. When they have a problem, nature often has the answer. This science ___36___ (call) biomimetics. Bio means “living things” and mimetics means “copying”. It involves ___37___ (draw) inspiration from nature’s designs and processes ___38___ (solve) human problems or improve technology. For example, engineers in Canada are studying whale flippers (鳍) because they move so effectively through water. The engineers believe the shape can improve the movement of wind turbines (涡轮机). Similarly, engineers at Mercedes Benz in Germany are using the shape of the box fish ___39___ one of their new cars because it makes the car ___40___ (fast) and more fuel efficient. Velcro (粘扣) is ___41___ (probable) the most famous example of biomimetics. Most people have some Velcro on ___42___ item of clothing. It was invented by the Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1948. He was walking in the countryside ___43___ he pulled a burr (毛刺) off his trousers. He noticed how well the burr stuck to his clothes so he studied its design. The result was Velcro, which became an ___44___ (afford) alternative to the traditional zipper. In conclusion, biomimetics not only has helped to design our world but promises many more ___45___ (possibility). Unfortunately, they might take a long time to develop. This isn’t really surprising: it took nature millions of years to design its animals and plants. Dear Amy, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 第二节 读后续写(满分25分) 47. Anna, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anna was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, coloring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anna had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was worrying her today. Recently, a new girl, Bree, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anna was. Miss Green, the art teacher, helped Bree and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Bree was also considered among the best artists in grade six. Bree was quick, smart and intelligent. Anna became jealous (妒忌) of Bree’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat. So that day, for the art competition, Miss Green took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anna's roll number was 16, while Bree was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Green wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat. Anna knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒) . Anna started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Green. Miss Green was surprised at Anna’s carelessness and told her that she was sorry for not offering help, since she didn’t have any oil pastels at hand, either. Anna looked around and failed to find any of her friends there in the room, much to her disappointment. Paragraph 1: Anna’s eyes were full of tears. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The two girls stood hand in hand, waiting for the winners to be announced. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高二学业水平阶段性检测(四) 英语试题 2024. 7 注意事项: 1. 1. Often it happens that a place has two names”(通常没有正式的命名仪式,但人们往往会把地名称为参考点。 故选A项。 根据第一段最后一句“As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.” 根据最后一段“A few roads in Singapore are named by what they look like. There is “Circular Road” for one. Another road Paya Lebar Crescent is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.”(新加坡有几条路是以它们的样子来命名的。“环行路”就是其中之一。Paya Lebar Crescent被称为新月,因为它从主要道路开始,形成一个新月,然后又回到主要道路。)可知, Paya Lebar Crescent以形状命名。故选D项。 B It happened at a bookstore last summer: my son Henry chose reading to his own taste. 4. C 5. D 6. A 7. A To present valuable information collected about the bird. Poor Communication Impacts Cooperation 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. 12. B 13. B 14. A 15. Then after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Anna’s eyes were full of tears. She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that without her oil pastels, her chances of winning the competition were slim. Just as she was about to give up, she noticed Bree, who was busy sketching away with her own set of tools. A thought crossed Anna’s mind—maybe Bree wouldn’t mind sharing. With a trembling voice, Anna approached Bree and explained her situation. To her surprise, Bree didn’t hesitate and offered Anna half of her oil pastels, saying, “We’re in this together, Anna. Let’s make something amazing.” Anna’s heart warmed as she realized that Bree wasn’t just a competitor but also a friend. With renewed energy, she began to work alongside Bree, using the shared resources to create a stunning sunset scene. Paragraph 2: The two girls stood hand in hand, waiting for the winners to be announced. As Miss Green walked towards the front of the room, holding the results, Anna’s heart pounded. She glanced at Bree, who was smiling confidently. To everyone’s amazement, Miss Green announced that the joint effort of Anna and Bree had won the competition. The room erupted in cheers and applause. Anna couldn’t believe it—not only had she overcome her fear of losing to Bree, but they had also accomplished something beautiful together. She hugged Bree tightly, grateful for the lesson she had learned: true talent lies not just in individual skills but also in the power of collaboration and friendship. From that day on, Anna and Bree became inseparable, pushing each other to new heights in their artistic pursuits. 词汇激活 行为类 注意:notice/take notice of 意识到:realize/be aware of 宣布:announce/declare 克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 无助的:helpless/unassisted 沮丧的:frustrated/depressed 感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】[高分句型1] Just as she was about to give up, she noticed Bree, who was busy sketching away with her own set of tools.(运用了who引导非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that without her oil pastels, her chances of winning the competition were slim.(运用了现在分词作状语,that引导宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
