Many have had the same thought as Shannon St. Onge when looking at the approach of snow on a weather forecast—that they have time to finish their jobs. As the director of finance at the First Nations University of Canada, she had to drive 25 kilometers from her home to the city of Regina to attend an important meeting.
As she was leaving, the winter snow began to fall. Taking a dirt road for better traction (牵引) on her tires, she quickly became lost, with no ability to see the edge of the road from a rolled-down window. After a while she stopped and called 911.
“The operator took my information and told me to wait out the storm as my tank was full and I was warm. I waited almost 14 hours and nobody has called me yet to check in,” she wrote in a Face-book post.
“Would the gas tank last until morning? What if I was hit by another vehicle? What if I didn’t make it home at all?” St. Onge wondered.
Determined to ensure the safest end, she went out in the storm and discovered her location on a road sign, and then found a neighborhood Facebook group for the area she was passing through—warning others of her plight through a Google Maps pin.
That was when 80-year-old Andre Bouvier Sr., a retired rescuer, got a call about St. Onge’s situation. He went out to find her, on foot, since he couldn’t manage to start his tractor.
On the way he found three other stranded (被困) vehicles. He walked the quarter mile there and back, and led the helpless cars one by one to his home. Bouvier let the survivors sleep at his house, where they ate and laughed, and departed the next morning after he had cleaned the driveway.
1. Why did St. Onge take a dirt road?
A. She was familiar with it. B. She could refuel on the road.
C. She took the dirt road to save time. D. She thought dirt road could increase traction.
2. What did the operator advise St. Onge to do?
A. Wait out the storm. B. Find a warm place.
C. Ask Bouvier for help. D. Write her condition in a Facebook post.
3. What does the underlined word “plight” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Wrong turn. B. Poor sense of direction.
C. Difficult situation. D. Bad weather.
4. Which of the following can best describe Bouvier?
A. Patient and gifted. B. Brave and selfless.
C. Proud and determined. D. Adventurous and ambitious.
Modern life brings us many things to worry about, and you may come across a friend or two reminding everyone to “just breathe”. But can just breathing really make a difference?
“The rate and depth we breathe at has a huge effect on our mental state,” says Elissa Epel, a professor from San Francisco. Researchers like Epel are exploring how breathing can help people reduce anxiety and they find that breathing could be an overlooked key to finding more calm and peace.
In a 2017 study, highly anxious people were asked to take a breath course and to practise twice a day at home. After eight weeks, they reported feeling less anxious compared to a group that didn’t receive the training. They also showed physical signs of reduced anxiety, including lower heart rate.
A regular breathing practice might help you feel calmer in your everyday life. But other studies suggest that focusing on your breathing in moments of acute stress could also be useful.
In an older study, researchers told participants that they were going to receive electric shocks, which actually never happened. Some of them practised breathing slowly before the shocks, while others focused on breathing at a normal rate or didn’t regulate their breathing at all. The slow breathers not only reported feeling less anxious while expecting the pain, but also showed lower anxiety on a physical level, as measured by sweat and blood flow to the fingers.
Another study following the study above tested three different breathing styles: fast inhaling (吸入) with slow exhaling; slow inhaling with fast exhaling; or evenly paced inhaling and exhaling. Here, the fast inhaling with slow exhaling (2 seconds in, 8 seconds out) was the most effective at relieving both the physical and mental anxiety.
All these studies show how much influence our body has on our mind. If the way we’ re breathing is signaling to our brains that something is wrong, it’s no wonder we feel anxious.
5. What do researchers like Epel find?
A. Most people have mental problems. B. People ignore the effect of anxiety.
C. Life gives people too much stress. D. Proper breathing can bring people peace.
6. What happened to the people who practised breathing for eight weeks?
A. Their bodies became stronger. B. Their hearts beat faster.
C. They got less anxious in daily life. D. They had a better sleep.
7. What can we learn from the older study?
A. The normal breathers feel less anxious. B. Sweat shows a good physical level.
C. Slow breathing can relieve real-time anxiety. D. Blood flow can cause anxiety.
8. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The similarities of three breathing methods. B. The influences of breathing on anxiety.
C. The styles of changing breathing. D. What the best breathing way is.
Florida wildlife officials say manatees (海牛) facing starvation are benefitting from a program that feeds them on tons of donated lettuce (生菜). The program aims to save as many of the large animals as possible as water pollution has led to shortages of their favorite food, seagrass.
The effort has provided the manatees with more than 25 tons of lettuce. The feedings usually draw about 300 to 350 manatees per day. Sometimes, there are as many as 800 manatees. Normally, wildlife experts advise against people feeding wild animals. This is because it can lead the animals to make an unhealthy connection between humans and food. It is a crime in Florida for a person to feed manatees on their own, even though officials say many people want to do so. Experts believe the best way people can help is to donate money through an official institution (机构).
In 2021, 1101 manatee deaths were reported, largely from starvation. The normal five-year average is about 625 deaths. State wildlife officials say that so far this year, 164 manatee deaths have been recorded. Tom Reinert, the local director of state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the feeding program has helped to reduce the rising death rates. Officials estimate there are about 8,800 manatees in Florida waters. That is a big improvement from about 2,000 that existed in the 1990s. The increased numbers were responsible for manatees being removed from the endangered species list.
The most important element for supporting the remaining population will be restoring seagrass beds. So far, Florida has set aside $8 million to deal with that problem. “You can’t just go out and plant a bunch of seagrass,” Reinert said. But he added, “Projects are getting started and are in the planning stages.”
9. What is the program intended to do?
A. To reduce food waste. B. To study manatees’ eating habits.
C. To rescue large animals from starvation. D. To solve the problem of water pollution.
10. What do experts advise the public to do for manatees?
A. Feed healthy food to them. B. Set up special rescue groups.
C. Pay more visits to wildlife reserves. D. Offer financial aid to official organizations.
11. Which of the following can best describe the feeding program?
A. Impractical. B. Significant.
C. Complicated. D. Time-consuming.
12. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Manatee Saving Program B. Ocean Protecting Program
C. Manatee Feeding Program D. Seagrass Beds Restoring Program
The exact location in France where Dutch master Vincent van Gogh painted his last work of art has been discovered.
A Dutch researcher figured out that a scene described in the artist’s last work Tee Root, was visible on a postcard showing a man standing next to a bicycle on a back street of the village Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh spent the last weeks of his life in the village. Helpfully, the card even included the name of the street.
Researchers were given a unique glimpse (体验) into the famous painter’s final hours. He was at work right up to the end.
Wouter van der Veen, scientific director of the Van Gogh Institute in France, made the discovery. While stuck at home, van de Veen used the extra time to organize the numerous files and documents on van Gogh, including images such as the old postcard from Auvers-sur-Oise. One day in late April, he saw the card on his computer screen and it suddenly struck him that he was looking at the location of Tree Roots. Next to the man and his bicycle, roots and trees are clearly visible. He took a virtual trip down the site using Google’s Street View.
“Villagers know the spot and the main tree root well, even giving it the name ‘the elephant’ because of its shapes,” van der Veen said. “It was really hiding in overt sight.”
The discovery provides tourists with an extra reason to visit Auvers-sur-Oise. “They travel a lot just for one reason — to walk in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. Now they can stand at the very place where he painted his last painting,” van der Veen said. “And that’s a very moving thing for a lot of people. So I’m very happy to be able to share that with all those who love van Gogh.”
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What the postcard revealed. B. How Tree Roots was discovered.
C Why Auvers-sur-Oise became known. D. Where van Gogh painted his works.
14. How did van der Veen confirm his discovery?
A. He studied a picture of Auvers-sur-Oise.
B. He organized his data on van Gogh.
C He traveled to France to see for himself.
D. He paid a visit to the spot online.
15. What does the underlined word “overt” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Mixed. B. Obvious. C. Lovely. D. Strange.
16. What can we infer about tourists to Auvers-sur-Oise?
A. They enjoy exploring how to paint. B. They share their love for van Gogh.
C. They admire van Gogh very much. D. They want to experience the life there.

My political career in the Student Union(SU)began by throwing frisbees (飞盘) on the campus lawn. I would throw a frisbee to someone I didn’t know and they would throw it to someone they didn’t know. Before long, we had built a community of people who met every day at lunch to throw frisbees.
Besides frisbees, the group decided to climb the mountain near our campus. When we reached the peak, it felt like we were at summer camp. We laughed, danced and told jokes. It was totally fun. While playing like little children in the cool mountain air, we all decided to do it again the following week. Our motto (座右铭) was “Bring a Friend” . We started out with a small group of hikers. But as the word spread, the number of participants increased. We made it a rule to climb the mountain every weekend. All of us were passionate about the fantastic experience, which we were looking forward to.
One day on campus, I decided to throw my frisbee to some strangers, run over and invite them to climb the mountain. Much to my surprise, a girl sitting in a wheelchair got hold of it. Her name was Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t. Holding the wheelchair tightly, she hung down her head in awkward silence. Then she told me that she had suffered from lung disease when she was young and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day. So, it was impossible for her to move without help. Fortunately, things got better.
With continuous efforts and treatment, she managed to live on her own with the assistance of the wheelchair: I told her that my friends and I would carry her if she were up for it. On hearing what I said, she refused without hesitation, adding that it would be a bother to carry her. But I tried my best to persuade her to come along with us by talking about the interesting experiences.

【答案】1. D 2. A 3. C 4. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是记叙文。文章讲述了一名80岁的老人徒步穿过暴风雪营救人的感人故事。
【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“Taking a dirt road for better traction (牵引) on her tires, she quickly became lost, with no ability to see the edge of the road from a rolled-down window.(为了提高轮胎的牵引力,她走上了一条土路,很快就迷路了,摇下的车窗外看不到路的边缘)”可知,St. Onge选择土路是为了增加车子的牵引力。故选D。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“The operator took my information and told me to wait out the storm as my tank was full and I was warm.(接线员记下了我的信息,告诉我等待暴风雪过去,因为我的油箱还满着,我也还很暖和)”可知,接线员建议St. Onge等待暴风雪过去。故选A。
【3题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段最后一句“After a while she stopped and called 911.(过了一会儿,她停下来打了911)”及第四段St. Onge的担心“Would the gas tank last until morning? What if I was hit by another vehicle? What if I didn't make it home at all?(油箱能撑到早上吗?如果我被另一辆车撞了怎么办?如果我根本回不了家呢?)”可知,她遇到了麻烦,被困在了路上,由此可推知,划线词plight的含义是“困境”。故选C。

【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Florida wildlife officials say manatees (海牛) facing starvation are benefitting from a program that feeds them on tons of donated lettuce (生菜). The exact location in France where Dutch master Vincent van Gogh painted his last work of art has been discovered.
A Dutch researcher figured out that a scene described in the artist’s last work, Tee Root, was visible on a postcard showing a man standing next to a bicycle on a back street of the village Auvers-sur-Oise.
C. Why Auvers-sur-Oise became known. D. Where van Gogh painted his works.
14. How did van der Veen confirm his discovery?
A. He studied a picture of Auvers-sur-Oise.
B. He organized his data on van Gogh.
C. He traveled to France to see for himself.
【答案】13. A 14. D 15. B 16. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了研究人员偶然间在一张明信片上发现了梵高人生最后一幅画创作的地点。
13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“A Dutch researcher figured out that a scene described in the artist’s last work, Tree Root, was visible on a postcard showing a man standing next to a bicycle on a back street of the village Auvers-sur-Oise.(一位荷兰研究人员发现,在一张明信片上可以看到梵高的最后一幅画《树根》中描绘的场景,一名男子站在奥维尔村庄一条后街上的自行车旁)”可知,第二段承接上文,主要描述这一发现的由来,即一张明信片上发现了梵高最后一幅画中的场景。故选A项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句“He took a virtual trip down the site using Google’s Street View.(他通过谷歌街景对该地点进行了一次虚拟旅行)”可知,研究人员van der Veen正是在看过明信片后,通过谷歌街景的模拟旅行进行了确认。故选D项。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中van der Veen的话“Villagers know the spot and the main tree root well, even giving it the name ‘the elephant’ because of its shapes,(村民们都知道这个地方和主干树根,甚至根据其形状命名为“大象”)”和“It was really hiding in overt sight.(它真的就藏在眼皮底下)”可知,联系上下文,显然梵高最后一幅画中的地方并不是无毛之地,相反很多人都知道这里,但就是没有人将它们联系起来,overt在这里应表示“明显的”以表达“藏在眼皮底下”的含义。故选B项。
【16题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中van der Veen的话“They travel a lot just for one reason—to walk in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. Now they can stand at the very place where he painted his last painting,(他们很多人来旅游都是抱着一个目的——追寻梵高的足迹。现在他们可以站在他创作最后一幅画的地方了)”和“And that’s a very moving thing for a lot of people. So I’m very happy to be able to share that with all those who love van Gogh(对许多人来说这是很感人的一件事。所以我很高兴能与那些喜爱梵高的人分享这一点)”可知,慕名而来的游客们大都是出于对梵高的欣赏和仰慕、想要追寻他最后的足迹。故选C项。

【答案】 Having thought for a while, Grace still refused my offer. Looking at her depressed and embarrassed expression, I didn’t want to quit persuading her. I showed her some pictures that were taken during our trip. She smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Ultimately, I made it. On that appointed day, I, together with several friends, offered continuous assistance to her. With our joint efforts, we made it to the top of the mountain and admired the fantastic scenery. A sense of excitement took hold of her, tears rolling down her cheeks like broken pearls. She was so grateful to us and we became close friends.
On the downhill path, Grace asked me why not run for the SU election. However, I didn’t have enough courage to run for it. Knowing I was in a dilemma, Grace had a sincere communication with me. “So kind and friendly are you that you helped me to enjoy the beautiful scenery and plan the weekend activity carefully. I am firmly convinced that you are capable of the work in the SU,” she said in a gentle voice. Inspired by her encouragement, I made a resolution to have a try. Having made full preparations, I was chosen chairman of the SU, which was beyond my expectations. Indeed, it is the mutual trust and help between friends that do make a great difference to us.
