Get ready to pack your bags! Once again, Vienna has been named the world’s most livable city, and we’re suddenly craving Sachertorte and a cup of coffee.
In its newly released Global Liveability Index for 2022, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) looked at 172 cities worldwide, assessing 30 livability factors across five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure Vienna, which ended up with an index rating of 99.1, topped the list, followed by Copenhagen (98.0) and Zurich (96.3)
“Stability and good infrastructure are Vienna’s main charms for its inhabitants (居民), supported by good healthcare and plenty of opportunities for culture and entertainment,” the EIU wrote in its report.
The City of Music has plenty to offer to keep its residents occupied. Music lovers will want to spend their evenings at the State Opera, while art enthusiasts and history buffs will enjoy diving into the city’s 100-plus museums. And when you need to take it slow, Vienna’s cozy coffeehouses provide the perfect setting for catching up with friends.
Vienna, which ranked first in 2018 and 2019, dropped down to 12th place in 2021 due to pandemic-related museum and restaurant closures. “For the past two years, EIU’s global liveability rankings have been largely driven by the pandemic, with lockdowns and social distancing measures affecting scores for culture, education, and healthcare in cities across the world,” said the report. “However, in our most recent survey, the index has normalized, as restrictions have been lifted in many countries.”

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smart phone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or pay quickly, but there is a problem-someone is wearing masks. What a hassle!
Now, the companies have improved their technology. Facial recognition technology can now know people even if they are wearing a mask. Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes. Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same-even if we put on weight.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. For example, you don’t need to take an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means that virus isn’t spread by touching things, said NEC’s Shinya Takeshima. “Touchless check has become very important to some infectious diseases,” he said to Reuters. “We hope to do something for safety and peace of mind.”
More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can tell criminals and terrorists,” said Huang Lei, one of Hanwang’s leaders. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
Huang talks about one big weakness of this technology. “It fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost,” Huang said to E&T.
8. What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1?
A. Trouble. B. Mistake. C. Rule. D. Habit.
9. The facial recognition software that can identify people with masks mainly depends on ______.
A. the forehead B. the eye region C. the shape of faces D. the facial expressions
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The future of facial recognition technology.
B. Different types of facial recognition software.
C. The advantages of facial recognition technology.
D The problems with current facial recognition technology.
11. What is the attitude of Mr Huang toward facial technology?
A. Objective. B. Favorable. C. Worried. D. Negative.
A 9. B 10. C 11. A

根据划线词上文“Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smart phone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or pay quickly, but there is a problem-someone is wearing masks.(面部识别摄像头无处不在,包括你的智能手机。许多人使用这项技术解锁手机、开门或快速付款,但有一个问题——有人戴着口罩)”可知人们用面部识别技术来解锁手机、开门、付款,这些都需要能看到脸部,但是人们都戴口罩,而且不能快速取下来,所以这个给面部识别造成不便,即这时候戴口罩是一件麻烦事,故推知划线单词“hassle”意思为“麻烦”。故选A。
根据第二段“As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same-even if we put on weight.(他说,随着年龄的增长,我们的脸会改变形状,但眼睛周围的区域不会改变。即使我们长胖了,它也不会变)”可知,面部识别软件能够识别戴口罩的人,主要依靠眼睛区域。故选B。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can tell criminals and terrorists,” said Huang Lei, one of Hanwang’s leaders. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.(不仅如此,面部识别还可以用来打击犯罪。“它可以分辨罪犯和恐怖分子,”汉旺的领导人之一黄磊说。汉王的技术被警方用于高度安全的环境中。这指的是政府大楼、地铁站和机场等地方。美国空军和其他政府也在使用类似的技术)”可知,本段讲述的是人脸识别技术的优势。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“ “It can tell criminals and terrorists,” said Huang Lei, one of Hanwang’s leaders. A group of clams (河蚌) recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station, which stands in the River Wisla, helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers sought help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams are sensitive to pollutants in their environment as they filter (过滤) water to feed on microorganisms (微生物). They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.
Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become accustomed to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to a system that records how wide the shells are open. If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be set off and the water supply will be shut down. The result is reliable because the creatures are considering many different factors at the same time, according to ZME Science.
Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle waste, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News. About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock.
12. What is the new usage of clams?
A. To solve the food shortage. B. To relieve people’s anxiety.
C. To remove heavy metals sooner. D. To check the water quality.
13. What does “this” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A. The clams are used to the local water. B. The clams prefer to close their shells.
C. The clams are regarded as delicious food. D. The clams are sensitive to polluted water.
14. How did the researchers obtain the research finding?
A. By selecting different kinds of clams. B. By referring to some historical records.
C. By analysing the results of the records. D. By interviewing some experts of ZME Science.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Animals, Good Helpers of Humans B. Three Kinds of Amazing Animals
C. A Special Way to Test Water Quality D. Animals, Far More than Tasty Food
D 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中的“Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland. (虽然这些河蚌通常被认为只是美味的食物,但它们在波兰监测当地的水质。)”和第三段中的“They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water. (它们在探测到“危险”水后立即关闭壳。)”可知,河蚌的新用途是监测水质,当它们检测到“危险”的水时,会立即关闭壳,从而帮助人们判断水质是否受到污染。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water. (它们在探测到“危险”水后立即关闭壳。)”和第四段中的“Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. (在此基础上,研究人员一次选择了8只河蚌,并记录了它们壳的自然打开。)”可知,第四段中的this指代前面提到的内容,即河蚌对污染水体的敏感性,它们会在检测到污染物时闭合壳,基于这一特性,研究人员设计了监测系统。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become accustomed to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to a system that records how wide the shells are open. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, Mrs. Green asked everyone about their dream jobs. The classroom suddenly got filled with eager voices as classmates enthusiastically shared their dreams. “I want to be a college professor,” said Sarah confidently. “I dream of becoming a basketball player,” exclaimed Mike with light in his eye. The air was filled with dreams of doctors, nurses, police and various professions.
When Mrs. Green turned her attention to me, inquiring about my future career, I hesitated. “I don’t know yet,” I admitted. Then she asked if I wished to follow in my dad’s footsteps. “No,” I replied firmly.
My dad is a distinguished doctor with a demanding schedule, who often finds himself engaged in the responsibilities of his job. Thus, he often return s home late in the evening. The limited time we spent together during my growth created a noticeable distance in our relationship. I had such a lot to complain about his job and thus being a doctor would be the last option I would take.
Upon hearing my response, Mrs. Green remained silent. Instead, she encouraged me to reflect further.
A turning point came when our school organized a cultural festival. It was an important event, and we had been preparing for it for a long time. For my role, I needed to purchase a costume. Unfortunately, my mother was abroad, so the responsibility fell on my father. Unwillingly, I agreed, acknowledging that there was no other choice.
In the mall, my dad’s unfamiliarity with the shopping list became apparent. Despite Mom’s thorough list, we wandered aimlessly through the floors, struggling to find the necessary items. As we did, I felt a growing sense of discomfort.
Suddenly, a chaos drew our attention. A crowd had gathered, and someone was shouting for help. It turned out that an elderly customer had a fall, and onlookers were at a loss on how to assist.
Without hesitation, my father rushed forward.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
For the first time, I felt a sense of pride in his work.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without hesitation, my father rushed forward. He pushed through the crowd, his demeanor calm and collected despite the chaos around him. Kneeling beside the elderly customer, he quickly assessed the situation and instructed bystanders to call an ambulance. With gentle hands, he comforted the frightened old man, assuring him that help was on the way. As he tended to the injured, my father’s expertise as a doctor shone through, and I couldn’t help but be impressed. His actions spoke louder than any words ever could, showing me a side of him I had never seen before. The crowd dispersed, and when the ambulance arrived, my father carefully explained the situation to the paramedics before they took the elderly man away. Standing there, watching him, I realized that being a doctor wasn’t just about long hours and sacrifices; it was also about making a difference in people’s lives.
For the first time, I felt a sense of pride in his work. As we walked out of the mall, I couldn’t help but ask him about his experiences as a doctor, and he shared stories of the moments that had brought him joy and fulfillment. I listened intently, seeing him in a new light. That night, when he returned home late, instead of feeling annoyed, I greeted him with a hug and thanked him for what he did. From then on, our relationship began to mend, and I found myself looking up to him in a way I never had before. My perspective on his job changed, and I realized that being a doctor wasn’t just a demanding profession; it was a calling that allowed him to touch lives and make a real impact. As I grew older, I even found myself considering following in his footsteps, inspired by his dedication and compassion.

Get ready to pack your bags! Once again, Vienna has been named the world’s most livable city, and we’re suddenly craving Sachertorte and a cup of coffee.
In its newly released Global Liveability Index for 2022, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) looked at 172 cities worldwide, assessing 30 livability factors across five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure And when you need to take it slow, Vienna’s cozy coffeehouses provide the perfect setting for catching up with friends.
