Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe for success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The significance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
24. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. early B. sweetly
C. quickly D. smoothly
25. What is found surprising about cats and dogs?
A. They eat and sleep together.
B. They observe each other's behaviors.
C. They learn to speak each other's language.
D. They know something from each other's voices.
26. It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ________.
A. have common interests
B. are less different than thought
C. have a common body language
D. are less intelligent than expected
27. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A. We should learn to live in harmony.
B. We should know more about animals.
C. We should live in peace with animals.
D. We should learn more body languages.

The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance.
On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other (物种) that depend on the trees’ flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many species are quickly dying out.
On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens (威胁) human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests’ plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world’s groundwater.
Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园) could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic (酸性的) soil conditions.
It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.
28. What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4?
A. It limits the spread of new growing techniques.
B. It leads to air pollution and global warming.
C. It slows down the loss of shade trees.
D. It improves local soil conditions.
29. The purpose of the text is to ________.
A. entertain B. advertise C. instruct D. persuade
30. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?
(CP: Central Point P: Point C: Conclusion)
A. B.
C. D.
D
Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup (基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other unexpected benefits including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communication systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品) of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
31. Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To express his doubts.
B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion.
D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
32. What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2?
A. Humans are nature-born to do so.
B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.
D. Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.
33. What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?
A. Our genetic makeup.
B. Resources on the earth.
C. The adaptive ability of humans.
D. By-products in space exploration.
34. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?
A. Space exploration has created many wonders.
B. Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or who grow up in the right family. Others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence. ____35____
However, to succeed in life, you need to set a goal. ____36____ To get really good at something, you need to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time. Most people won’t put in that time. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it will feel like unbearable pain. You will likely quit before you become good at it. ____37____
When you see people with great skills or who have achieved great success, remember they have dedicated a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. ____38____ But thinking that way does you no good, and you’re probably wrong.
____39____ You must almost reach the point of addiction and keep at it for a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee the level of success you want. But it will guarantee you become really good at whatever you dedicate yourself to.
A. That’s just how life is.
B. One cannot succeed without time.
C. And then, you need to make it practical.
D. Successful people like to show their great skills and talent.
E. It’s easy to think they got lucky or were born with rare talent.
F. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love.
G. Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out.
Do you spend over an hour each day texting messages to your friends? Do you frequently ignore work, study, and other activities to check your phone for messages? Are you anxious and restless if you are separated from your mobile phone?
If you answer “yes” to any of the questions, then it is very possible that you are a textaholic. A textaholic can be defined as someone who is addicted to sending and receiving messages. The main symptoms (症状) are a strong desire to text messages, which takes precedence (优先) over everything else, and bad moods, low spirits and a lack of self-confidence if messages fail to come in. The root of the problem, as with many addictions, is the desire to escape from emotional difficulties such as stress, anxiety and relationship problems. Experts warn that text addiction is likely to become the most common form of addiction in the future, especially among the young.
So what can you do if you think you may be a textaholic? The key is to get your life back in balance. Make sure you resist the urge to answer every message you receive, and consider leaving your mobile phone behind occasionally when you go out. Most importantly, make a point of spending quality time with friends and family, and make time to re-learn the art of face-to-face conversation instead of conducting your relationships by means of text messages. Not only will you save time and money, but you may also rediscover the pleasure of true communication.
40. What is a textaholic?
______________________________
41. What causes a person to be a textaholic?

D 25. C 26. B 27. A
根据文章第一段最后一句“Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.(三分之二的受访家庭表示,他们的猫狗关系良好。)”
根据文章第三段“researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language(研究人员观察到一种令人惊讶的行为。他们正在学习如何讲彼此的语言)”可知,这个令人吃惊的发现便是猫与狗竟然能够互相学习对方的语言。故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom each other.( 有趣的是,猫和狗似乎都在发展它们的智力。它们可以学习如何读懂对方的身体信号,这表明它们之间的共同点可能比之前怀疑的要多。一旦熟悉了彼此的存在感和肢体语言,猫和狗就可以一起玩耍,面对面地打招呼,一起睡在沙发上。他们可以很容易地共用一个水碗,在某些情况下还会互相梳理毛发。)”可知,事实上猫与狗之间存在更多的共同点,它们并没有我们想象中的那么格格不入。故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home?(狗和猫能在同一个家里和睦相处吗?)”和最后一段“If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.(如果猫和狗都能学会和睦相处,人类当然也有很大的机会。)” 故选A。
C
A. B.
C. D.
B 29. D 30. A
根据第四段中“Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园) could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming.(在当地和全球范围内,全日照咖啡种植园的持续扩张可能意味着雨林生态的破坏。遮荫树的减少已经导致世界气候的轻微变化,研究表明,供氧气的树木的减少也会导致空气污染和全球变暖)”可知,全日照咖啡的种植方式会导致空气污染和全球变暖。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.(但消费者确实有选择。只要有可能,他们可以购买遮荫种植的咖啡,尽管价格更高。地球和人类未来的健康肯定比一杯廉价的咖啡更有价值)”可推知,作者写作本文的目的是劝说人们购买遮荫种植的咖啡。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。文章第一段“The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance.(咖啡种植方式从遮荫生产转变为全日照生产,这危及了某些动物和鸟类的生存,甚至扰乱了世界的生态平衡)”提出中心论点,全日照的咖啡生产方式带来危害,第二段“On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals.(在地方层面上,充足的阳光场对森林的破坏会影响该地区的鸟类和动物)”、第三段“On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens (威胁) human life.(在更全球化的层面上,为全日照咖啡田而破坏雨林也威胁着人类的生命)”以及第四段“Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology.(在当地和全球范围内,全日照咖啡种植园的持续扩张可能意味着雨林生态的破坏)”从不同层面展开说明,三段为并列关系,最后一段“It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. (很明显,咖啡的种植方式会影响生活的许多方面,从当地环境到全球生态)”给出结论,所以A项能够体现文章的结构。故选A。
C 32. A 33. C 34. D

根据第一段“Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked. (人类为什么要探索太空?为什么要花费金钱、时间和精力去探索和研究那些没有什么明显好处的东西呢?为什么资源应该花在太空上,而不是花在地球上的环境和人身上?可以理解的是,这些问题经常被问到)”可知,作者用连续的三个问题来说明人们对太空探索的意义的困惑,再结合下文段落对此进行解答可推知,作者提出这些问题是为了引出要讨论的主题——太空探索的意义。故选C项。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup (基因构成) as human beings. (也许最好的答案在于我们作为人类的基因构成)”和“Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible. (也许探索太空的最好理由是这种向任何可能的地方扩张的遗传倾向)”可知,本段给出的理由是人类的基因决定了人类倾向于向任何可能的地方扩张,去探索太空,即人类天生就会这么做。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets.
