Pandas Leave US National Zoo After Decades
NOVEMBER 9, 2023
Washington, DC
Yesterday, the National Zoo in Washington, DC said goodbye to its giant pandas, as they left for China. The pandas will be greatly missed by the zoo and its visitors.
Black and white giant pandas are special and unusual. In the wild, pandas are only found in China. For many years, China has “lent” pandas to other countries as away of making positive connections with them. In 1972, US President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat visited China. Mrs. Nixon said that she loved pandas, and China’s leader promised to send her some. Later, the pandas appeared at the National Zoo and became one of he big reasons that people visited the zoo. The zoo worked hard to help raise more pandas but the National Zoo didn’t own the pandas. It had a special agreement with China which allowed them to keep the pandas for a certain amount of time.
Now, all three pandas are on their way to China. The trip to China will take about 9 hours. When the pandas arrive in China, they will be taken to a protected area in the mountains of Sichuan Province. 152 other pandas already living there.
It’s not clear if China will “lend” more pandas to the National Zoo again but the zoo is still working to improve its panda area, so that it will be ready if that happens.
1. China is the only place where pandas can be found.
2. The National Zoo can keep pandas for about 50 years according to the agreement.
3. There will be 155 pandas living in the protected area of Sichuan province in two days.
4. Pandas will never appear at the National Zoo in the future.

When Holly looks out of the window in the morning, the world is white: the roofs of the houses are white; the trees are white; the grass is white. But she sees something else, too.
She pulls on her clothes, runs downstairs, and opens the door. The bright snow dazzles her eyes and the cold air makes her hands turned. But there, in the snow, she clearly sees little shapes going from the food bowl to the end of the garden. These aren’t human foot prints. They are paw (爪子) prints! Holly follows them across the garden, with the snow under her feet.
They go under the old tree to the garage (车库). The garage door isn’t completely closed. The paw prints stop at the entrance. An animal is in there. A fox? A cat? A lovely pig? Or even... “Oh please, please,” she says softly.
Holly pushes up the door and steps inside.
It’s very quiet in the garage. Her parents’ car is in the middle, and along the walls are shelves filled with all the old things that don’t fit in the house: her dad’s tools, Holly’s old toys, boxes, bags—all the things they don’t want but don’t want to throw away. In the corner, under some card board boxes, and lying on an old blanket, she sees a dark shape.
It opens an eye.
It opens another eye.
Its tail starts to shake.
Yes, it’s Eco! Lost Eco!
Before Holy goes to school, there’s a meeting in the kitchen. Her mother, father, sister and dog are all there. The decision is: Holly can keep Eco, but she must take him to a dog training school.

A report from the United Nations says that about 54 percent of the human population live in cities, for more job opportunities, more cultural activities, larger communities. Yet, living in a crowded, green-poor environment takes something away from us—our basic need to be close to nature.
In a book coming out this month, Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness, Dr. Qing Li, the world’s expert in forest medicine, introduces readers to the practice of forest bathing—and the art and science of how trees can benefit our life. Forest bathing is the practice of spending long periods of time with trees to get their health benefits. It makes people less worried and angry. Essential tree oils (植物精油) increase energy levels by more than 30 percent. There is improvement in sleep and spirits. The health and emotional (情感的) benefits are many.
Forest bathing doesn’t require huge areas to be useful. Walks in parks, green communities, gardens all offer a degree of benefits. Anyone can find a way to be close to nature. As Alan Watts once wrote, “You didn’t come into this world. You came out of it, like a wave from the ocean. You are not a stranger here.”
The idea of forest bathing shouldn’t be so surprising. Who hasn’t felt a sense of peace when walking in a forest, the sunlight coming through the leaves to create light and shadows (影子) on the ground? Stepping into a forest, or just into a small park meets our deepest needs. It’s hard not to feel something meaningful as we are close to trees.
11. What is the disadvantage of living in cities?
A. More cultural activities. B. Being far from nature.
C. Better job opportunities. D. Being close to communities.
12. What can we learn about forest anything from Paragraph 2?
A. It leads to anger and pressure. B. Dr. Qing Li invented this idea.
C. It makes us healthy and happy. D. Many readers have practiced it.
13. Which of the following is a practice of forest bathing?
A. Planting trees. B. Staying indoors.
C. Swimming in lakes. D. Stepping into a park.
14. How can we understand the words of Alan Watts in Paragraph 3?
A. Anyone can find a forest. B. Humans are part of nature.
C. Walks in gardens benefit us. D. Huge areas in forests are useful.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Forest Bathing Is Helpful B. Nature Meets our Basic Need
C. Growing Trees Benefits Humans D. A Green Environment Offers Peace

When we are on a bus, shop with our friends, or eat in a restaurant, we can take a moment to look around us. Can we see the thing almost everyone is using? We use that small supercomputer in our pocket for almost everything. It is our shopping list, our alarm clock, our news, our music and more. For most people, it is often the first thing they see when they wake up in the morning and the last thing they see before they fall asleep at night.
And we say to ourselves this supercomputer really isn’t such a bad thing, and everyone is doing it! But this is far from the truth. Except our work, it is probably the greatest single cause of stress (压力) in our lives. WeChat, QQ, and Blog are beginning to do harm to our health. Our love for it makes it hard for us to focus.
This supercomputer also damages our social lives. In fact, just having it in view on the table in front of us influences the talk we are having with someone. It doesn’t even need to be “doing” anything. When it becomes active, we almost pay no attention to the people around us.
It is not all that bad, however. It is very easy to protect ourselves from its bad effects. We can turn off the sounds. We will still have all the information we need, but then at a time of our own choosing, not when someone decides to get in touch with us. Tell our friends that they can use it to phone us if something important happens. Answering any other kind of message from it may take a little more time. Leave those apps on it that take up to much of our time. Don’t worry, we’re allowed to. Always remember, we are the ones who decide how to live our lie, not this super computer.
16. What do the underlined words “that small supercomputer” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. An MP3. B. A watch. C. A notebook. D. A smart phone.
17. Why does the writer talk about “WeChat, QQ, and Bog” in Paragraph 2?
A. To introduce more ways to relax. B. To give advice on how to focus.
C. To show the supercomputer’s bad influence. D. To prove the supercomputer is not a bad thing.
18. What do we know about the supercomputer from Paragraph 3?
A. It hurts our relationships. B. It stops our talk with others.
C. It becomes active all the time. D. It helps connect with others.
19. What should our friends do if something important happens?
A. Offer us apps. B. Leave us a message. C. Give us a call. D. Send us information.
20. What can we learn about the last two sentences?
A. Time allows us to do anything. B. We should choose our way of life.
C. We can decide what our friends do. D. Supercomputers improve how we live.

Happiness is not the result of jumping from one joy to the next, researchers find that achieving happiness requires us to pass through the pain and discomfort. Social relationships, even your neighbors—all influence how happy you are
There are some misunderstandings of happiness. People often believe that happiness will be achieved once they reach a certain goal, such as finding a perfect partner or getting a good job. However, people will be used to their new relationship or wealth, return to a basic level of happiness, and look for the next goal.
There are also many people who think they must be happier if they can earn more money. However, research shows that a person who can make money of$150, 000a year will not necessarily be as happy as a person making less money
Happy people show certain signs. They always find joy in the simple pleasures of life—petting a dog, siting under a tee, and enjoying a cup of tea. Besides, happy people often have good relationships with others, because they are often grateful to and happy for other people. A happy person is also ready to learn new skill and open to new things.
Studies have found hat the benefits of happiness are great. First of all, being happy helps people keep healthy, not only physical but also mentally. What’s more, happy people are usually more popular in a much bigger social circle. Therefore, it is not hard to understand that happy people are often more successful in their life.

【答案】例文:
Dear Mike,
I’m sorry that you met with some trouble. I think you have made two mistakes. First, you used your classmate’s pen without her permission. Second, when you broke the pen, you didn’t tell him the truth. In my opinion, you should tell him immediately. If you tell him the truth, perhaps he’ll be angry with you, but at least you’ll prove you are honest. Then, I think you should offer to pay. You can use your pocket money to buy a new pen for him. Finally, you can invite him for dinner if necessary. This way he will realize that you are truly sorry.
I hope my advice will be helpful. I’m sure you’ll make up with him soon.

Holly pushes up the door and steps inside
It’s very quiet in the garage. Her parents’ car is in the middle, and along the walls are shelves filled with all the old things that don’t fit in the house: her dad’s tools, Holly’s old toys, boxes, bags—all the things they don’t want but don’t want to throw away. In the corner, under some card board boxes, and lying on an old blanket, she sees a dark shape.
It opens an eye
It opens another eye.
Its tail starts to shake.

First of all being happy helps people keep healthy, not only physical but also mentally. What’s more, happy people are usually more popular in a much bigger social circle. Therefore, it is not hard to understand that happy people are often more successful in their life.
