Engage students with science with these exciting and entertaining experiments! Students will love exploring while also gaining invaluable experience by designing and conducting experiments.
Sunscreen Experiment
Kids often don’t enjoy being told they need sunscreen, so showing its power through demonstration can help them see its value. This science fair project uses simple white beads (珠子) that change color when exposed to UV rays (紫外线) so children can compare the effectiveness of different sunscreen products. Start this experiment by applying some of each sunscreen type on paper and placing both pieces of paper in direct sunlight for several hours.
Sundial (日晷) Experiment
Using a sundial to tell time is a fascinating science activity that helps students gain knowledge of shadows and the movement of sunlight across the sky. Through this hands-on experiment, students gain an opportunity to see how people in previous times knew time without clocks or watches. Start this experiment by asking students to identify an outdoor spot that receives sunlight all day, placing a flat board there, tracing the shadows onto it and noting where the shadows will fall at certain points of the day.
Mineral Experiment
Students learn to identify rocks and minerals through this simple experiment. They use a plate to test the hardness of various common minerals. They also observe how these minerals form crystals (晶体) and how they break apart differently from others. This lesson helps students understand the characteristics and uses of different minerals. Students can even form “companies” and compete to mine different types of rocks with specific features.
1. What is the main purpose of using beads in the sunscreen experiment?
A. To compare the prices of sunscreen.
B. To show the effectiveness of sunscreen.
C. To analyze the impact of sunscreen on skin.
D. To demonstrate chemical reactions in sunscreen.
2. How do students begin the sundial experiment?
A. By building a sundial from beginning.
B. By comparing different types of sundials.
C. By measuring the length of their shadows.
D. By identifying a sunny spot and using a flat board.
3. What does the mineral experiment allow students to do?
A. Observe crystal formation. B. Learn geological history.
C. Sell rocks they mine. D. Form companies.

Nilas Corneliussen feels worried when a city turns quiet at night. “I much prefer to be in a dynamic city that never sleeps, and Bangkok gives me that,” said the Swedish-born chef of a Nordic-Asian restaurant in Thailand’s capital.
While Thailand had long appealed to him, Corneliussen says he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai (泰拳), or Thai boxing. On high school breaks, he even traveled solo to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. After sustaining a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to give up Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand.
The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies that he was inspired by a fellow student and friend who ran small Thai restaurants. However, there was something inside of him that was drawn to culinary arts. “The atmosphere inside the kitchen fascinated me-everyone has to work together to make it happen.” Corneliussen recalled.
At the time, the chef didn’t think he could pursue his new passion for cooking in Thailand. Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything else, so he finished his studies and moved back to Sweden. Starting out in a restaurant in Stockholm, he practised his skills. In 2019, he won the silver in the Bocuse d’Or, a world-famous international cooking competition, as part of the Swedish team.
Despite those successes, he knew he wanted to return to Asia to achieve his dream of culinary arts. In 2022, Corneliussen made the move to a high-end restaurant, which opened the same year, and where he showcased casual Nordic food with Asian influences.
“In Thailand, I get this feeling of belonging and connection to the people, food and culture,” he said.
4. What is presented in the first paragraph?
A. Corneliussen dislikes working at night. B. Corneliussen feels uneasy in a new city.
C. Bangkok is home to Nordic restaurants. D. Bangkok gives Corneliussen the feeling he wants.
5. What mainly made Corneliussen choose cooking as a career?
A. His injured hand. B. His inner passion.
C. His friends’ support. D. His tiredness of study.
6. How did Corneliussen improve his cooking skills?
A. By practising in his motherland. B. By improving diverse dishes in Thailand.
C. By attending varieties of cooking competitions. D. By summarizing experience from other cooks.
7. Why did Corneliussen decide to return to Asia?
A. To learn Muay Thai. B. To showcase Nordic food.
C. To open a high-end restaurant. D. To achieve his dream of culinary arts.

A new attempt to predict earthquakes with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised hopes that the technology could one day be used to limit earthquakes’ impact on lives and economies. Developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, the AI algorithm correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week before they happened during a seven-month trial in China.
The AI was trained to find unusual patterns in real-time seismic data that researchers had paired with the data of previous earthquakes. The outcome was a weekly forecast in which the AI successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within about 200 miles of where it estimated they would happen and at almost exactly the calculated strength. It missed one earthquake and gave eight false warnings.
It’s not yet known if the same approach will work at other locations, but the effort is a significant achievement in research for AI-driven earthquake forecasting.
“Predicting earthquakes is the ultimate goal,” said a professor, who is a member of the research team. “We’re not yet close to making predictions for anywhere in the world, but what we achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable in principle.”
The researchers said that their method had succeeded by following a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was given a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, then told to train itself on a five-year database of seismic recordings. Once trained, the AI gave its forecast by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes among the background rumblings in the Earth.
“Our future goal is to combine both physics and data-driven methods to create a generalized system that we can apply anywhere in the world,” said the AI’s lead developer. “The new research is an important step towards achieving that goal.”
8. What do we say about AI predicting earthquakes?
A. The rate of accuracy is high.
B. It has got proven worldwide.
C. The prediction is completely random.
D. Earthquakes can be controlled by scientists.
9. Which can best explain the underlined word “seismic” in paragraph 2?
A. Related to weather patterns. B. Related to earthquakes.
C. Related to volcanic activities. D. Related to ocean currents.
10. What is researchers’ attitude towards AI predicting earthquakes?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Optimistic. D. Unfavorable.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Development Of Earthquake
B. AI’s Role in Predicting Earthquakes
C. AI’s Forecast about Natural Disasters
D. The Understanding of Earthquake Physics

Plants have been important to humans since ancient times. They give us food, clothes and shelter. Their beauty brings us happiness, and many plants can also cure us. Recently, scientists found a plant that can better clean polluted air.
Scientists at a research institution in the UK studied how well plants can capture (捕获) pollution from cars. Car exhaust fumes (汽车尾气), as well as tire and brake particles, cause many health problems. Since previous research has shown that trees help remove air pollution, researchers decided to test three types of plants: hawthorn, western red cedar, and franchet’s cotoneaster (西南枸子).
Researchers found that franchet’s cotoneaster was the best at capturing pollution. This is because of its hairy and complex leaf structure. They also discovered that thick barriers over six feet high were the best at reducing pollution. In areas with heavy traffic, franchet’s cotoneaster absorbed 20% more pollution than the other plants.
A co-author of the study said, “We know that in just seven days, a 1-meter length of well-managed thick barrier will capture the same amount of pollution that a car emits (排放) over a 500-mile drive.” The researchers recommend planting franchet’s cotoneaster along busy roads.
This is great news for city planners, landscapers, and gardeners. Originally from China, franchet’s cotoneaster is a hardy evergreen that can survive temperatures as low as -23℃. It grows well in the UK and can also grow well in places like California, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and around the Great Lakes.
Thanks to this study franchet’s cotoneaster has shown to be very useful. It allows gardeners and landscapers to help the environment. When these super plants are grown in urban gardens, on streets, and along highways, they will clean the air and add beauty to the surroundings.
12. Which aspect of plants is mainly mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Varieties of plants. B. Living environment.
C. Benefits of plants. D. Medical properties.
13. Why is franchet’s cotoneaster effective in capturing pollution?
A. It requires less water.
B. It is taller than other plants.
C. It grows faster than other plants.
D. It has hair y and complex leaf structures.
14 What can we infer about franchet’s cotoneaster from paragraph 5?
A. They will be planted less by gardeners.
B. They will be imported more from China.
C. They can adjust to the cold temperature.
D. They should be planted in correct places.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the environmental benefits of franchet’s cotoneaster.
B. To describe the appearance of franchet’s cotoneaster.
C. To compare franchet’s cotoneaster with other plants.
D. To explain how to plant franchet’s cotoneaster.

In the summer of 2005, Kathryn Fumie, having just finished her freshman year of college, was living in an apartment and learning to cook. One day, she decided to make soup on the stove.
As the soup gently cooked on the stove, Fumie went to check on it. In a moment of distraction, she accidentally knocked the pot over, causing the boiling soup to splash onto her hand. The pain was immediate and unbearable, and she quickly realized she had severely burned her skin.
Her classmate, who was nearby, saw the accident and quickly called for an ambulance. Within minutes, the ambulance arrived, and an EMT (急救医疗医生), wearing a mask, began to assist her. The EMT helped Fumie stay calm during the 45-minute drive to the hospital, despite her continuously asking for some alleviation of her pain.
“Could you do something to ease my pain, please? Could I have a cold pack?” Fumie asked repeatedly. The EMT explained gently but firmly that he couldn’t give her a cold pack because extreme cold might cause further damage to her already injured skin. She had to tolerate the pain until they reached the burn unit.
At the hospital, the doctor treating her took a compassionate (有同情心的) approach. He talked to her throughout the treatment process to help distract her from the pain. They chatted about various topics, including her part-time job at a factory, which helped to take her mind off her injuries. Most importantly, the doctor made her know that she was going to be okay.
“He had an amazing voice, and just was so calm. He made sure that I got the right treatment,” Fumie remembered. The doctor’s professional and empathetic demeanor made a significant difference in her experience.
Fumie was in hospital for four and a half days, receiving excellent care. Two months later, fully recovered, she returned to her part-time job as a receptionist at the factory. However, the story didn’t stop here.

【答案】参考范文:
One day, while workıng at the reception desk, a man approached her. “Do you remember me?” he asked. Fume looked at him, puzzled, and replied, “No, I’m sorry I don’t.” The man then suggested, “Why don t you look into my eyes and listen to my voice for a bit? Maybe you’ll remember.” Fumie looked at the man’s eyes and listened. Suddenly, she recognized him. He was the EMT from the ambulance ride. Shocked and grateful, she nodded, her heart swelling with appreciation for this stranger who had shown her such kindness in a moment of crisis.
“I just really wanted to come check on you,” said the EMT. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “My skin was so painful. You made me feel like it was going to be okay. You made me feel less pain. For that, I am forever grateful.” The EMT smiled warmly, glad to see her well on the road to recovery. He waved goodbye and left, leaving Fumie with a renewed sense of resilience. She realized that even in life’s darkest moments, there are always rays of light and kindness to guide us through.
