Enjoy a good walk? You’ve come to the right place. England’s largest county, Yorkshire has more walks than it can shake a walking stick at.
Hockney country
|8 miles, 3.5 hours| OS Explorer 29
Spot the landscapes that attracted the artist David Hockney on this quiet and gentle walk through the Yorkshire Wolds. The walk starts from Warter village. It follows tracks and quiet roads, and heads north and east to the hidden valleys of Lavender Dale and Brig Dale. Then it returns to the village, passing the places where Hockney painted his Bigger Trees near Warter and Warter Vista.
Where to stay: The Pipe and Glass, South Dalton, has double rooms from £300.
Moorland and villages
|7 miles, 3 hours| OS Explorer OL26
From Hutton-le-Hole — arguably one of the prettiest villages in the North York Moors, with its green grass, grazing sheep and a small river — this walk follows tracks and paths, and sometimes roads, across farms and moorland. It passes through quiet Appleton-le-Moors to lovely Lastingham. There, the old Norman crypt (a room under the church) in St Mary’s church is a must-see stop. Then it returns downhill to Hutton-le-Hole.
Where to stay: The White Swan Inn, Pickering, has doubles from £175.
Hardcastle Crags and Heptonstall
|7.5 miles, 3-4 hours| OS Explorer OL21
This walk in Calderdale takes in an old mill town that is now a place for creative people, woodland, rocks, an old hilltop village and amazing views. From Hebden Bridge, follow paths next to Hebden Water (a smaller river that joins the River Calder) through the woodland of Hardcastle Crags, which has steep sides. Then climb up to Heptonstall (a village that once made cloth) and enjoy the views over Calderdale. Return to Hebden Bridge down the steep old road called, suitably, The Buttress.
Where to stay: Hebden Townhouse, Hebden, has doubles from £99.
Ilkley Moor
|8 miles, 3.5 hours| OS Explorer 297
A walk between two pubs; what could be better? From the Cow and Calf inn, on the edge of Ilkley Moor, go to the left of the Cow and Calf rocks — huge rocks made of gritstone — and enjoy the views over Ilkley and Wharfedale. Then head south over the moors. Look out for the Twelve Apostles, a very old stone circle, before going down through fields to Dick Hudsons pub on the edge of Bingley. Return along the same way.
Where to stay: The Crescent Inn, Ilkley, has double rooms from £155.
21. What do the Hockney country walk and the Ilkley Moor walk have in common?

The arrival of autumn always fills me with delight because of its abundant pomegranate (石榴) harvest. As I enjoy this among fruits, I often think about how living in China helped me fall in love with this special food.
Although I loved pomegranate juice, I used to dislike the fruit itself. Its appearance shaped my old view. I once thought it was just a mass of soft little seeds, not a real fruit worth eating. I believed it would be boring, troublesome and hardly worth the effort to try. I even thought people who enjoyed it were just being polite. Whenever I saw pomegranates on a table, I would quietly look away.
However, a gift from my family years ago challenged my bias. Several thin pomegranate trees grow outside a house in rural Zhejiang, whose branches hang heavy with fruit each autumn. One fall, my mother-in-law gave my husband and me a big bag of home-picked pomegranates.
At first, I avoided the fruit on the dinner table and refused my husband Jun’s repeated invitations to try it. Day after day, as he ate the fruit and asked me to taste the seeds, curiosity finally got the better of me.
I put a handful of seeds into my mouth, expecting to feel unimpressed. Instead, the seeds burst with rich sweet flavor, far better than any pomegranate juice I had drunk before. Those little seeds sparkled like tasty fruit jewels. My eyes opened wide, and I could hardly believe how good they were. Without thinking, I reached for another handful. Then another. All my previous doubts faded away. Just one bite turned me into a lifelong fan.
Besides its amazing taste, pomegranate is a “super fruit” with health benefits. When I felt tired and stressed, I often had an upset stomach. Eating pomegranates regularly helped improve my digestion and eased my discomfort.
If you haven’t tried fresh pomegranates, it’s never too late. One delicious mouthful may plant the seed of lasting love for this plain-looking but fantastic fruit.
24. What does the underlined word “bias” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. deep concern B. sweet memory C. strong desire D. unfair opinion
25. Why did the writer finally decide to taste the pomegranate seeds?
A. Her mother-in-law asked her to have a try.
B. She knew pomegranates were good for health.
C. Her husband kept inviting her and curiosity won her over.
D. She wanted to taste the juice made from fresh pomegranates.
26. Which word can best describe the writer’s feeling after tasting pomegranates?
A. amazed B. confused C. satisfied D. uninterested
27. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Seeing is believing. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
C
We know noise pollution is bad for humans, increasing our risk of health problems like stress and heart disease. We also know it harms many other animals, like songbirds, dolphins and whales.
Recently, scientists have taken a closer look at how serious this problem really is. They found that human noise is a major global pollutant harming far more animal species (物种) than we once believed. Published in the journal Biology Letters, the study suggests noise pollution not only harms lots of animals, but also endangers the survival of more than 100 different species. The study found that these species come from across the animal kingdom. Despite their differences, species from these animal groups respond to noise pollution in surprisingly similar ways.
Lots of species depend on sound for communication. Many birds, insects and mammals, for example, use sound for important activities such as finding mates or warning of predators (捕食者). Noise pollution can make it harder for them to hear important sounds. which may reduce their chances of reproducing and put their populations at risk.
Noise pollution can also put some animals at greater risk from predators, while also preventing some predators from finding enough food. Bats and owls use their hearing to hunt, but noise pollution can make it difficult for them to detect prey (发现猎物). Even if noise pollution is at a low level, it might still force them to spend more time and energy searching for food, which could potentially reduce their population numbers.
Noise pollution is a well-known risk for whales and dolphins, but it threatens other marine animals, too. Baby fish are drawn to the sounds of coral reefs to find suitable habitats. Too much noise from ships and humans can confuse them, causing them to settle in low-quality reefs, reducing their chances of survival.
As harmful as noise pollution can be, however, there is reason to be hopeful. Unlike chemical pollution, which can remain in the environment for years, noise pollution only exists as long as people or machines are making the noise. Instead of cleaning up another mess, in this case, all we have to do is quiet down
28. What conclusion can we draw from the study?
A. It only focuses on one single area of the world.
B. It is mainly concerned with human health problems.
C. Noise pollution puts a number of living species in danger.
D. Animals of different kinds react to noise pollution differently.
29. Noise pollution might lead to fewer predator animals because ________.
A. it may result in tougher competition. B. it may damage their hearing ability.
C. it may weaken their interest in finding mates. D. it may cost them extra energy to look for food.
30. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Whales and dolphins are at risk due to noise pollution.
B. Many fish communicate with each other through sound.
C. Baby fish’s living environments are affected by noise pollution.
D. Coral reefs can protect baby fish from the harm brought by noise.
31. What is the author’s opinion on noise pollution?
A. It creates the same influence as chemical pollution.
B. Its damage can be controlled through human efforts.
C. Its damage to the environment will exist for a long time.
D. It is not as harmful to living things as most people think.
D
Researchers are increasingly worried that letting AI take over our mental work causes various cognitive (认知的) declines. A new study finds that the use of the bots can eat away at users’ faith in their own abilities, resulting in lower confidence in their own independent reasoning (推理).
The newly published study reveals that people depending heavily on AI were more likely to admit chatbots were “thinking” for them — and showed decreased confidence in themselves. However, participants who took control over their AI’s output by editing, questioning, or giving up it showed greater confidence and a sense of ownership over the final output, even though the tools used were the same.
What drives the difference? According to the study’s author, the final cognitive effects “depend on your interaction style.” “When we look at brain activity based on how people choose to use the tool, we can see increases or decreases,” Baldeo said. “It really does not have to do with the tool itself.”
The finding agrees with the “boiling frog study”, which found evidence that AI can rapidly harm users’ intellectual (智力的) abilities, particularly when we use the tech for reasoning work.
During that study, participants in the experimental group used AI to complete a series of equations. The researchers then pulled the plug in the middle of their work, forcing them to continue without it. Those who could no longer use their AI chatbots saw rapid declines in reasoning ability and willingness to follow through and complete the math tasks.
Both studies reach the same core conclusion: how you use AI is an important factor in determining whether it harms your cognitive ability. Basically, they argue that heavy dependence on the machine degrades (使退化) your ability for independent reasoning, while using AI as a helper may help to preserve it. Whether you’re measuring confidence or raw reasoning, both pieces of research seem to pose an important question: are you using AI to help you think, or is AI doing the thinking for you?
32. What do researchers tend to believe according to Paragraph 1?
A. Taking over AI’s mental work leads to cognitive decline.
B. AI bots can improve users’ independent reasoning ability.
C. Most people have little confidence in independent thinking.
D. Dependence on chatbots may weaken people’s belief in their own reasoning.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Editing AI’s output contributes to perfect final work.
B. People can always finish work better with the help of chatbots.
C. People trusting AI to do all thinking lose confidence in themselves.
D. Participants using different AI tools gained different levels of confidence.
34. What is the function of Paragraph 3?
A. To introduce another study about AI and math tasks.
B. To prove confidence matters more than reasoning ability.
C. To argue against the opinion of the newly published study.
D. To explain what leads to different cognitive results of AI use.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Way We Use AI Makes a Difference
B. AI Will Surely Weaken Our Reasoning Ability
C. Boiling Frog Study: AI Is Stealing Our Brain Power
D. We Should Stop Chatbots from Helping with Mental Work
