New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women. Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said : "These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people's cardiovascular (心血管的)fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia. " For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts. A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category; and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems. These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness. "However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important. " She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were form Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups. 24. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Positive effects of doing exercises. B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged. C. Experimental studies on diseases. D. Advantages of sporty woman over man 25. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise? A. To predict their maximum heart rate. B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity C. To change their habits of working out D. To detect their potential health problems 26. What do we know about Dr Horder's study? A. It aimed to find a cure for dementia. B. Data collection was a lengthy process. C. Some participants withdrew from it. D. The results were far from satisfactory. 27 Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia D. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness 【答案】24. A 25. B 26. B 27. 根据文章第一段“New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (失智症) in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women.”(新的研究人员发现,身体健康的中年女性在晚年患痴呆症的可能性要低近90%,而且确实如此,与不太喜欢运动的女性相比,她们患痴呆症的时间要晚十年。) 故选A项。 根据上文“These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people's cardiovascular fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.”(这些发现令人兴奋,因为在中年时改善人们的心血管健康可能会延缓甚至防止他们患上痴呆症。)以及本段“For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak cardiovascular capacity.”(在这项研究中,191名平均年龄为50岁的女性进行了自行车运动测试,直到她们精疲力竭,以测量她们的心血管峰值能力。) 根据文章第五段“These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades.”(这些女性在随后的四十年里测试了六次失智症状况。) 根据文章第一段“New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (失智症) in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women.”(新的研究人员发现,身体健康的中年女性在晚年患痴呆症的可能性要低近90%,而且确实如此,与不太喜欢运动的女性相比,她们患痴呆症的时间要晚十年。) C In the fictional worlds of film and TV, artificial intelligence (AI) has been described as so advanced that it is indistinguishable from humans. But what if we’re actually getting closer to a world where AI is capable of thinking and feeling? Tech company UneeQ is heading for its “digital humans”, which appear life like on the screen not only in terms of language, but also because of facial movements: raised eyebrows, a smile, even a nod. They look close to a human, but not quite. What lies beneath UneeQ's digital humans? Their 3D faces are modeled on actual human features. Speech recognition enables them to understand what a person is saying, and natural language processing is used to work out a response. Meanwhile, another AI company, Soul Machines, is taking a more biological approach, with a “digital brain”, that imitates aspects of the human brain to adjust the emotions “felt” and “expressed” by its “digital people”. Shiwali Mohan, an AI scientist at the Palo Research Center, is skeptical of these digital beings. “They’re humanlike in their looks and the way they sound, but that in itself is not being human.” she says. “Human qualities also involve how you think, how you approach problems. and how you break them down: and that takes a lot of algorithmic (算法) design. Designing for human-level intelligence is a different attempt than designing images that behave like humans.” She then continues. “If something looks like a human, we have high expectations of them, but they might behave differently in ways that humans just instinctively (直觉地) know how other humans react.” Yet the demand is there, with UneeQ seeing high adoption of its digital employees across the financial, health care, and commercial sectors (行业). “Unless these sectors make their business models much more efficient digitally, they might be left behind,” says Chetan Dube, UneeQ's CEO. Some other companies are taking their digital beings a step further, enabling organizations and individuals to create digital humans themselves using free-access platforms they provide. “The biggest motivation for such platforms is to popularize AI.” Dube says. Mohan is cautious about this approach, yet she supports the purpose behind these digital beings and is optimistic about where they are headed. As we develop more advanced AI technology, we would then have to use new ways of communicating with that technology, she says. “Hopefully, all of that is designed to support humans in their goals.” 28. According to Para. 2, in what respect(s) do UneeQ's “digital humans” resemble human beings? A. In the way they move around. B. In the way they act and react. C. In observation and analysis. D. In speech and facial expressions. 29. Soul Machines’ digital brain is a technological breakthrough because it ________. A. tends to imitate human beings’ tone vividly B. learns to make proper emotional responses C. recognizes the speech sounds it receives D. processes the natural language it hears 30. In Mohan’s opinion, what human quality is lacking in digital beings? A. Calculating brain. B. Language skills. C. Problem-solving ability. D. Instinctive judgements. 31. What makes many sectors employ digital humans? A. The urgency to promote e-commerce. B. The fear of falling behind in efficiency. C. The wish to spread digital technology. D. The need to upgrade the health care system. D 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第二段“Tech company UneeQ is heading for its “digital humans”, which appear life like on the screen not only in terms of language, but also because of facial movements: raised eyebrows, a smile, even a nod.(科技公司UneeQ正朝着其“数字人”的方向发展,这种人在屏幕上看起来像真人,不仅在语言方面,还因为面部动作:扬起眉毛、微笑,甚至点头)”可知,UneeQ的“数字人”在语言和面部动作方面与人类相似。 根据第三段“Meanwhile, another AI company, Soul Machines, is taking a more biological approach, with a “digital brain”, that imitates aspects of the human brain to adjust the emotions “felt” and “expressed” by its “digital people”.(与此同时,另一家人工智能公司Soul Machines正在采取一种更具生物学意义的方法,建立一个“数字大脑”,模仿人脑的各个方面来调整其“数字人”“感受到”和“表达”的情绪)”可知,Soul Machines的数字大脑是一项技术突破,是因为它可以学会做出适当的情绪反应。 根据第四段““They’re humanlike in their looks and the way they sound, but that in itself is not being human.” she says. “Human qualities also involve how you think, how you approach problems. and how you break them down: and that takes a lot of algorithmic (算法) design. Designing for human-level intelligence is a different attempt than designing images that behave like humans.” She then continues. “If something looks like a human, we have high expectations of them, but they might behave differently in ways that humans just instinctively (直觉地) know how other humans react.”(她说:“它们的长相和声音都很像人,但这本身就不是人。”。“人的素质还包括你如何思考,如何处理问题,以及如何分解问题:这需要大量的算法设计。为人类水平的智能进行设计与设计行为像人类的图像不同。”她接着说道。“如果某个东西看起来像人类,我们对它们有很高的期望,但它们的行为可能会有所不同,人类只是本能地知道其他人的反应。”)”可知,在Mohan看来,人类可以本能地知道其他人的反应,而数字人缺少本能的判断。故选D项。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“Yet the demand is there, with UneeQ seeing high adoption of its digital employees across the financial, health care, and commercial sectors (行业). “Unless these sectors make their business models much more efficient digitally, they might be left behind,” says Chetan Dube, UneeQ's CEO.(然而,需求是存在的,UneeQ看到其数字员工在金融、医疗保健和商业部门被大量采用。UneeQ的首席执行官Chetan Dube表示:“除非这些部门的商业模式在数字方面更加高效,否则它们可能会被甩在后面。”)”可知,担心效率落后让许多行业使用“数字人”。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Too much stuff, too much to do, too much stress.... We should always stay mindful and live with intention. If there is something in your life that you don’t love, change it! Cut out the things that aren’t serving you. You can write down what an ideal day would look like for you in five years’ time. Then outline what things you want more in your life and what things you want less. ___35___ Managing your time wisely counts. ___36___ Instead, take some time to think about whether it’s something that you are excited about attending. When the time came to register for tenth grade, I went to the principals office and told the staff my parents could not pay the tuition (学费). Although I was the top student in my class. I was sent home. This was a heartbreaking experience, as I loved being in school and desperately wanted to continue my education. I went home and spent the day helping my father at his tire repair shop. He could barely earn enough to pay the tuition of my two brothers. A very old man saw me in the shop and wondered why I was not in school. I told him I was sent home because of lack of funding. He offered to help by calling the principal of another school to ask him to register me tuition-free. Even though the school was far away from my home, I could not pass up the opportunity to continue my education. I took a city bus to downtown Beirut and went to the principals office. Embarrassed to tell him that I was supposed to get free tuition, I told the principal that arrangements had been made for me to study at a discounted tuition. I was shocked when the principal screamed at me that there was no such thing as a discounted tuition. I immediately turned around and rushed back to my fathers tire shop. It was at that moment that my hope was totally ruined. However, things took an unexpected turn three days later. One of my classmates from Sophia came over. Our principal had sent her to tell me that I should come back to school. When I arrived, I told the registrar (教务主任) that I could not pay the tuition. She informed me that my tuition was fully paid and that I should join my classmates. I asked who had paid it so I could thank that wonderful individual. But I was told that the benefactor wanted to remain anonymous (匿名) and keep it a secret. I went to my classroom, feeling extremely puzzled. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The registrar was finally persuaded to inform me that it was my teacher, Ms Balian. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Paragraph 1: I went to my classroom, feeling extremely puzzled. I kept wondering who had been so kind to give me this golden opportunity to continue my education. I went back to the principal’s office after classes and begged the registrar to disclose the name of the benefactor. Hard as I tried to talk her into giving me a clue, she insisted that she had to keep the secret. Then I had no alternative but to make a promise that I wouldn’t go and thank the person and risk the registrar’s getting fired for breaking confidentiality. Paragraph 2: The registrar was finally persuaded to inform me that it was my teacher, Ms Balian. She went on explaining that when the school year started and Ms Balian noticed my desk was empty, she inquired why I was not in school. After learning the truth, she then told the principal to deduct my tuition from her salary. The whole year I sat in Ms Balian’s class, but was unable to express my appreciation for her kind gesture. B The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. 27. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia D. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness C In the fictional worlds of film and TV, artificial intelligence (AI) has been described as so advanced that it is indistinguishable from humans. Speech recognition enables them to understand what a person is saying and natural language processing is used to work out a response. Too much stuff, too much to do, too much stress.... _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
