The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food advertising exposure by children with that of adults. The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase a concept known as “pester power”. The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself.
