Kataria is the founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. The celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive activity for world peace and is intended to build up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. The first World Laughter Day gathering took place in Mumbai, India, on 11th January, 1998. 12,000 members from India and international Laughter Clubs attended it. Now there are over 5,000 Laughter Clubs worldwide on all 5 continents.
“HAPPY-DEMIC” was the first World Laughter Day gathering outside India. It took place on 9th January, two years after the Mumbai gathering. In Copenhagen, Denmark, more than 10,000 people gathered at Town Hall Square. The event went into Guinness World Records. World Laughter Day is now organized on the first Sunday of May every year. Hundreds of people gather worldwide on that day to laugh together.
Today, many people fear widespread international terrorism. The world has never faced so much unrest before. People are at war within themselves. Laughter is a universal language, which has the ability to unite humanity without religion. Laughter can build a common connection between various religions and create a better world. The idea may sound overambitious, and maybe it is. But maybe it is not. It is our deep belief that laughter and only laughter can unite the world, building up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship.
Studies also say that laughter helps your body do the following: lower blood pressure; lighten depression; reduce stress; work out the heart, especially for those who are unable to perform physical exercise. So in life, when you can laugh, you should laugh loudly and with your entire body, because it’s good for you.
4 What is the purpose of celebrating World Laughter Day?
A. To lower blood pressure.
B. To reduce stress and lighten depression.
C. To build a common connection between various religions.
D. To build up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship.
5. When did the first World Laughter Day gathering outside India take place?
A. In 1998. B. In 1999. C. In 2000. D. In 2002.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards laughter movement?
A Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uninterested. D. Objective.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. Laughter and happiness. B. A universal language.
C. Laughter and physical health. D. World Laughter Day and its significance.
C
In school, I’d often draw cartoons about what I was learning instead of taking notes. And obviously, I had the right idea all along. A new study found drawing is a good memory technique.
A group of scientists had participants try and memorize the definition of a set of words. They had some participants copy the words and their definitions. They had other participants draw out the meaning of the words. The drawers memorized more words.
“We reasoned that drawing improves memory, at least in part, because it requires elaboration (详述) on the meaning of the term and translating the definition into a picture,” wrote the researchers. What’s more, the scientists found older people were worse than younger people at memorizing when the two wrote out their definitions. But the two groups showed no difference when it came to memorizing from drawing.
I’ve learned many mnemonics in my day. I’ve pictured strange images that relate to the words I’m memorizing, put facts to music and associated words with pieces of furniture. But I’ve never heard of this “drawing effect,” as the researchers put it, though I’ve used it without realizing it.
It makes sense though. Images must be built much deeper into our brains than letters. Image processing took place before writing. Mostly, I’m surprised that many educators haven’t realized that fun learning is better learning. Pictures and songs stick in the brain better than pages of text.
Humans like to separate ourselves from other animals, often focusing on our ability to use language. Language is great, but we’re just animals after all. We might be able to use language, but images stick in our brains in a totally different, possibly deeper way.
In any case, next time I draw a cartoon of something I’m trying to learn, I’ll feel no shame.
8. What can we know about the benefits of drawing according to the study?
A. They would decrease little by little. B. They were obviously shown on animals.
C. They were obvious only on teenagers. D. They were more noticeable for older people.
9. What does the underlined word “mnemonics” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Changes in memory. B. Memory techniques.
C. Memory improvements. D. Benefits of memory.
10. What does the author think of learning by drawing?
A. It is fun as well as effective. B. It is the best learning method.
C. It should be mixed with singing. D. It is good for our language ability.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To solve a difficult problem. B. To share opinions on drawing.
C. To introduce a learning method. D. To introduce benefits of drawing.
D
Conservation scientists use translocation (迁移) and captive breeding (圈养繁殖) to re-establish animal populations that are dying out in the wild—either entirely or in certain areas. Reintroducing the animals to their native territories can be a double win: helping to restore damaged ecosystems as well as increasing population numbers.
But setting a species loose in the wild is a precarious balancing act. “Reintroductions often take years and involve multiple phases,” says Natasha Robinson, an ecologist at the Australian National University who specializes in threatened wildlife. “Before bringing back a species, conservationists have to evaluate the threat level—both to and from the animal—and the role it played in the ecosystem,” says Robinson. “In places where wild populations have been endangered more recently, there’s a better chance of success,” she says.
“The less time that the ecosystem has passed the more likely that environment is the same as it used to be,” she says. “But you still need to address the reason why the species got endangered in that environment to begin with.”
Reintroduced animals can have a positive impact on the landscape, but how fast this happens depends on the type of animal and how damaged the environment is. Herbivores (食草动物) can make a significant change relatively quickly, says Robinson.
A 2020 study highlighted species reintroduction as one of the most effective ways to save endangered animals. Without these projects, species such as Przewalski’s horse and the Guam rail would almost certainly be extinct in the wild. The study estimates that conservation action between 1993 and 2020 saved up to 48 species of birds and mammals from extinction, and that the rate of extinction would have been three to four times higher, during that period, without those efforts.
12. What is the purpose of the reintroduction program?
A. To save endangered animals. B. To set species loose in the wild.
C. To get people interested in conservation. D. To raise money to fund the research.
13. What can be inferred from Natasha Robinson’s words?
A. Reintroducing species should be considered carefully.
B. Finding a new place suitable for reintroduction is a must.
C. The most endangered species can be reintroduced entirely.
D. Chances are that more wild populations are in danger.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. More efforts will be put into reintroducing animals.
B. The reintroduction program has made great progress.
C. How difficult it is to bring the endangered species back.
D. What a terrible situation some species are faced with.
15. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the text?
A. Help the endangered species survive in the wild
B. Keep ecosystem balanced by reintroducing animals
C. Take conservation action to protect natural resources
D. Reintroduce endangered species to their native habitat
第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It happens all the time—you are standing on a bus, listening to music, when you feel someone’s breath on the back of your neck. You think to yourself: Is this person getting too close to me? The answer is yes. ____16____ But how big is this space?
According to a new study, the size of the space is different for different people, ____17____, reported Los Angeles Times. In the study, researchers from University College of London asked volunteers to hold their hands at different distances from their face. They then gave them an electric shock on their hands while measuring how often the volunteers blinked (眨眼). The more they blinked, ____18____.
The results among volunteers were a little different, but the average personal space was 20 to 40 centimeters. Researchers also found that the more anxious a person was, the larger their personal space was because they were more sensitive.
Besides psychological factors, ____19____. For example, a person who grew up in a country that hugs a lot has less of a problem with strangers getting too close than a person who grew up in one with more distance between people.
____20____. “If you are chatting with some one in your living room, you won’t have a large safety space at all,” explained researcher Gian Domenico Iannetti. “But if you are walking through a dangerous area, then that will be much bigger.” Sadly, sometimes people just don’t understand the idea of personal space and keep getting into yours. Whenever that happens, rather than trying to step backwards, researchers suggest that you “create a new space” by turning to wave at someone passing by or to get something out of your bag.
A. Everyone has a sense of personal space
B. it shows that they are worried about their hands
C. the more of a threat they felt the shock was to their face
D. but generally it is between 20 to 40 centimeters in front of the face
E. culture is also thought to be able to change your personal space
F. People’s senses of personal space also depend on the environments they are in
G. It is clear that people’s senses of personal space are considered to be very important

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为 150 左右。
Jason threw the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at me. He pointed a finger at the paper. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger. “How dare he treat me like that,” I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.
As the weeks went by, I grew to dislike Jason. One day, another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to let the man know how I felt I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jason, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’ allow it to continue.”
Jason assumed a nervous smile and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. “I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.
Jason avoided me the rest of the week. Papers and letters appeared on my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seen again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left some on his desk. Another day I left a note. “Hope your day is going great,” it read. Over the next few weeks, Jason reappeared but there were no other episodes.
One year after our “talk”, I discovered I had cancer. I was thirty-two, the mother of three young children, scared. Friends and loved ones visited and tried to find the right words to comfort me. No one knew what to say, and many said the wrong things. Others wept.
Paragraph 1
One day, Jason came into the hospital room awkwardly, and placed a box beside me.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

Pictures and songs stick in the brain better than pages of text.(最令我惊讶的是,许多教育工作者没有意识到有趣的学习是更好的学习。图片和歌曲比一页一页的文字更容易在大脑中记忆)”和文章第六段“Humans like to separate ourselves from other animals, often focusing on our ability to use language. Language is great, but we’re just animals after all. We might be able to use language, but images stick in our brains in a totally different, possibly deeper way.(人类喜欢将自己与其他动物区分开来,通常专注于我们使用语言的能力。语言是伟大的,但我们毕竟只是动物。我们也许能够使用语言,但图像以一种完全不同的、可能更深刻的方式留在我们的大脑中)”可推知,作者认为学习通过画图既有趣又有效。故选A。
【11题详解】

Conservation scientists use translocation (迁移) and captive breeding (圈养繁殖) to re-establish animal populations that are dying out in the wild—either entirely or in certain areas. Reintroducing the animals to their native territories can be a double win: helping to restore damaged ecosystems, as well as increasing population numbers.
“The less time that the ecosystem has passed, the more likely that environment is the same as it used to be,” she says.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. D

【答案】16. A 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. F

【答案】One day, Jason came into the hospital room awkwardly, and placed a box beside me. “Tulips,” he said. I grinned, not understanding. He shuffled his feet, then cleared his throat. “If you plant them when you get home, they’ll come up next spring. I just wanted you to know that I think you’ll be there to see them when they come up.” Tears clouded my eyes and I reached out my hand. “Thank you,” I whispered. Jason grasped my hand and gruffly replied, “You’re welcome. You can’t see it now, but next spring you’ll see the colors I picked out for you. I think you’ll like them.” He turned and left without another word.
For ten years, I have watched those red and white flowers blossom every spring. In fact, this September, doctors declared me cured and I've watched my children graduate from high school and go on to college. In a moment when I prayed for just the right word, a man with very few words said all the right things. After all, that’s what friends do.
