After the knock-out Maui wildfires, people from all walks of life managed to find ways to support the victims. While many felt more comfortable giving to the Hawaii Red Cross or grassroots organizations, others wanted to donate directly to the people in need. Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson felt that way too, so they created The People’s Fund of Maui, which aims to support the displaced residents of Lahaina as they try to rebuild their lives.
“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the enormous financial burden (负担). The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”
Winfrey and Johnson posted a video announcing a donation of $10 million on Instagram, and calling for those who need assistance to apply. The People’s Fund of Maui aims to provide direct relief to individuals in the form of $1,200 monthly payments for as long as possible. The recipients of this fundraiser are individuals who are over the age of 18, reside in Lahaina and Kula, and lost their homes during the fire. “We are beyond grateful to be working alongside community leaders of Maui to launch the People’s Fund of Maui,” Johnson shared in a statement. “These leaders are offering their guidance to ensure our fund can put money directly in the. hands of those individuals most affected.”
Johnson who spent some time in Honolulu as a kid, praised first responders and com munity members who have stepped up to the challenge. “As people around the world watched the great loss caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit of our Polynesian culture and the strength of the people of Maui,” said Johnson.

Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, and it quickly became the most popular home-entertainment device of the century. Seeking to provide a visual accompaniment to the phonograph, Edison helped Dickson, a young laboratory assistant, invent a motion-picture camera in 1888. Building upon the work of Maybridge and Marey, Dickson combined the two final essentials of motion-picture recording and viewing technology.
These were a device, adapted from the escapement mechanism of a clock, to ensure the intermittent (周期的) but regular motion of the film tape through the camera and a regularly perforated (穿孔的) film tape to ensure precise synchronization (同步) between the film tape and the shutter. Dickson’s camera, the Kinetograph, initially imprinted up to 50 feet (15metres)of film at the rate of about 40 frames per second.
Dickson was not the only person who had been solving the problem of recording and reproducing moving images. Inventors throughout the world had been trying for years to invent working motion-picture machines. In fact, several European inventors, including the Englishman William Friese-Greene, applied for patents on various cameras, projectors, and camera-projector combinations contemporaneously or even before Edison and his associates did.
Because Edison had originally come up with motion pictures as an adjunct to his phonograph, he did not entrust the invention of a projector to accompany the Kinetograph. Rather, he had Dickson design a type of viewing device called the Kinetoscope, in which a continuous 47-foot (14-metre) film circle ran between a lamp and a shutter for individual viewing.
Starting in 1894, Kinetoscopes were marketed commercially through the firm of Raff and Gammon for $250 to $300 a piece. The Edison Company established its own Kinetograph studio in West Orange, New Jersey, to supply films for the Kinetoscopes. In April of that year the first Kinetoscope cinema was opened in a storefront in New York City. The cinema charged 25cents for admission to a bank of five machines.
8. What’s the purpose of Edison helping Dickson invent a motion-picture camera?
A. To support the work made by Muybridge and Marey.
B. To offer viewing technology assistance to his invention.
C. To make preparations for his invention of the phonograph.
D To remove the devices of old motion-picture recording.
9 What does paragraph 2 intend to tell about the Kinetograph?
A. Its speed. B. Its development.
C. Its limitations. D. Its operational principle.
10. What does the underlined word “adjunct” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Addition. B. Replacement. C. Example. D. Project.

Scientists exploring the ocean floor in Antaretica have found the largest group of fish nests ever discovered. The huge area of nests came as a surprise, and will help scientists develop a more complete idea of the ocean food web in the area.
In the south Weddell Sea, scientists discovered a group of roughly 60 million icefish nests on the ocean floor. Before this, the largest group of icefish nests ever found had about 60 nests. Researchers from Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute on the research ship Polarstern were studying the ocean floor in Antaretica. To do this, they used a special device called OFOBS. The device collects information and takes pictures and video from 5 — 8 feet (1.5 — 2.5meters) above the sea floor. Lilian Boehringer, a research student, was the first to spot the nests. “They were everywhere,” she told the New York Times. During the first four-hour filming session, the scientists found over 16,000 nests.
The researchers used OFOBS to make two more four-hour “dives”, trying to discover the limits of the nesting area. This allowed them to calculate that the nesting site covers at least 92 square miles (240 square kilometers). The scientists were studying the area because the temperatures there are slightly warmer than the areas around it. The water is still cold — barely above freezing — but that seems to be perfect for icefish.
The nests scientists found were in the shape of a circle, and about 2.5 feet (75centimeters)across. Each nest held about 1,700 eggs. Most of the nests were being guarded by a male icefish. Researchers also spotted some dead icefish and some nests with no fish.
Because of the massive numbers of nests found, the scientists believe the icefish must play a very important part in the ocean’s food cycle in the area. The researchers think the icefish are an important food source for Antarctica’s Weddell Seals.
12. What does the author want to explain in paragraph 2?
A. How researchers found icefish nests. B. What the newly-found icefish nests looks.
C. What icefish nests means to the ocean. D. Why icefish build the nests in the ocean.
13. The icefish build their nest in the south Weddell Sea because of its ________.
A. depth B. purity C. area D. condition
14. What’s the significance of the find of icefish nests?
A. It provides more evidences about icefish’s living habits.
B. It helps scientists know more about the ocean food chain.
C. It tells us the importance of protecting the big oceans.
D. It helps the fishers get more information about fishing.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Icefish’s Position in Ocean Food Cycle B. Further Studies about the Ocean Food Cycle
C. The Largest Group of Fish Nests Discovered D. The Necessities for the Ocean Food Studies

Ever since 7-year-old Bryan had fixed a cupboard from Ikea with his father, he developed a love for building. Throughout the years in school, he helped his friends whenever they needed help building something. One day, his teacher recommended an after-school workshop for him to develop his talent. He skipped home, smiling from ear to ear.
“Mom! Dad! My DNT teacher suggested I should go for this after-school workshop! Can I go? Please? This would really help me in my future career!” Bryan said. Father asked, “How will this help you in becoming a scientist? It is also too near the time of your exams.” Bryan shook his head and his eyes glowed. “I want to be an engineer.” Mother said, “Really? I thought that you would like to be a scientist. What made you change your mind?” “Well, I may really like science but, over the years, I discovered a passion for building!” “We see. But we do not support your idea. Sorry, Bryan but you are smart enough to be a scientist and I don’t want you wasting those precious years away on something like building. Moreover, you will definitely earn more money as a scientist! Remember how you said you wanted to pay us back? Be successful! Like us!” Father responded. Mother nodded.
The next day, Bryan told his teacher sadly, “Mr. Hock, I am not able to attend the workshop.” He could sense the disappointment in Mr. Hock, his DNT teacher’s eyes. At this moment, Bryan’s heart sank. A signed consent form (同意书) would have changed his whole life.
For the next few years, he continued studying science. Bryan had many friends who were in the same course as him, but no one asked about his career.
One fine day in the cafeteria, he bumped into Axel, who was going to change his perspective of a career forever. They introduced themselves, and the courses they took. Turns out, Axel studied engineering. “What about you? You look like a math person.” he commented. “Actually, I take science.” Bryan replied, shyly. “Really? So, you want to be a scientist?” “Actually, no. My parents wanted me to be a scientist. I wanted to be a builder, like you!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文:
“Woah. They wanted you to be a scientist? Why? My parents let me decide. It’s your future! Not theirs.” Axel commented. Bryan looked down at his feet. He told Axel about how his parents had discouraged him in the past. “What? They said that? That’s unacceptable! They are your parents! They should be supportive! How are they doing now?” Bryan explained about his parents’ disapproval about him taking on a part-time job first. “When I was younger, I wanted to be a builder but my parents said that builders were useless.”
“Ridiculous!” Axel replied with much anger. “You should work hard and prove to them what you can be and what builders are!” Over the weeks, Bryan worked on a desk, with Axel, which Bryan’s parents really needed as they had lost their business and started becoming poor. When they showed the desk to his parents, his parents were shocked. They suddenly knew what Bryan could do for the family and a builder’s worth. Since then, Bryan and Axel became the best of friends. They started a company together and provided for their families well.
