That summer, I had my first selection test and later, the name list of the qualified candidates was posted on a noticeboard in the hallway. The other students ran to the wall and searched for their names on the list. Then, some screamed in excitement while some slicked away angrily.
Following the success of my audition, I was placed in the orchestra and I was in the middle of the violin section. However, I was too short to see the conductor as I was blocked by Gordon, an eleven-year-old boy in front of me. The conductor told him to switch seats with me.
In the orchestra, if you were seated in the front near the conductor, you had to be excellent. I understood the gravity of the seating arrangement. On hearing the conductor’s words, Gordon looked stricken. “Everyone will think she did better than me in the audition!” he burst. During the break, Gordon told me that we would both perform in front of the group. Whoever played it better would win. Returning to class, Gordon brought up his idea to the conductor at once. The conductor agreed and the challenge was scheduled for the following day.
After class, I told my father about the challenge. I waited for him to tell me that he would not let any boy pick on me. Instead, he grabbed a music stand and told me to start practising.
For fifteen minutes, my father kept barking orders. “Faster!” “Posture!” “Watch your rhythm!” Then, he said, “OK. Just play like that. May the best man win.” I gave my father a wink, feeling optimistic about the challenge.
Maybe I should have expected as much. When we played chess, my father always won. He said if he had eased up and let me win, that would be cheating. It was the first lesson I remembered from my father: Work hard and do not be afraid of losing. If you do lose, pick yourself up and you’ll succeed some day.
4. Why did some students slick away angrily?
A. They were too short to be qualified. B. They did not pass the selection test.
C. They were laughed at for their failure. D. They hated the other students’ scream.
5 What does the underlined word “audition” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. A trial performance. B. A close match.

6. What can we infer about the seats in the orchestra?
A. They are decided by the age of performers.
B. They actually depend on the height of performers.
C. They can be flexibly switched in different performances.
D. They are arranged according to the importance of performers.
7. What lesson did the author learn from his father?
A. It’s never too old to learn. B. Great minds think the same.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C
Ships are the lifeline of trade among countries. Almost everything, from food to machinery, comes by way of the sea in huge ships piloted by captains. But the captain of a ship is responsible for guiding the vessel until they hit a port, waiting to enter the harbor. The task of bringing the ship into the harbor and docking it is taken up by a different captain. This captain is called a marine pilot.
A marine pilot is a boat pilot with specialized knowledge of a particular port or harbor. The pilot is needed to direct large ships into a port, where there are often deep-water channels surrounded by shallower seabeds. Without the services of a marine pilot, docking ships would be hazardous. There would be a real chance of running aground and damaging the ship and the cargo, some of which might be dangerous if released into a water-based ecosystem.
In addition to the shallower seabeds, tide and wind pose further challenges for bringing ships into a port. During different tides, currents may change from one direction to the other. The same strategy for docking a ship during an incoming tide may not work during an outgoing tide. Also, the wind can significantly alter the direction of the ship and how it reacts, adding to the difficulty of docking the ship.
Marine pilotage is a job that requires a high degree of proficiency as well as quick and independent thinking. Above all, it is about risk management. A marine pilot goes on board at a crucial time and controls the ship based on his or her knowledge of the port and the situation at hand. The pilot is responsible for not only the safety of the ship but also the protection of the port and the marine environment.
8. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A special profession. B. Shipping and trading.
C. Guidelines for safe docking. D. Protection of the marine environment.
9. Which of the following is part of the knowledge that a marine pilot must have?
A. The value of the ships. B. The content of the cargo.
C. The weather conditions. D. The diversity of marine life.
10. What does “a crucial time” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. When the ship departs from port. B. When the channel is not deep enough.
C. When there is a crash of two ships. D. When a ship is waiting to enter the port.
11 How does the author conclude the passage in the last paragraph?
A. By adding new details. B. By predicting future development.
C. By summarizing the main points. D. By giving advice to the general public.
D
People who speak two languages may be better at shifting their attention from one thing to another compared to those who speak one, according to a study published this month in the journal Bilingualism. The study examined differences between bilingual and monolingual individuals when it comes to attentional control and ignoring information that isn’t important at the time, said its authors Grace deMeurisse and Edith Kaan. They set out to see if differences between the two groups would surface and used a task to measure the participants’ abilities to deal with incoming information and control their attention.
“Our results showed that bilinguals seem to be more efficient at ignoring information that’s irrelevant.” deMeurisse said. “One explanation for this is that bilinguals are constantly switching between two languages and need to shift their attention away from the language not in use.” For example, if an English-and Spanish-speaking person is having a conversation in Spanish, both languages are active, but English is put on hold but always ready to be used as needed.
The two groups of subjects included functional monolinguals and bilinguals. Functional monolinguals were defined as those who had two years or less of a foreign language experience in a classroom and use only the first language that they learned as a child. Bilinguals were categorized as people who had learned both their first and second language before the ages of 9 to 12 and were still using both languages.
Kaan explained that an individual’s cognitive(认知的) traits continuously adapt to external factors. The researchers were also clear to point out that their study was not intended to show that people who speak two or more languages have an advantage over those who speak one. “However, regardless of cognitive differences, learning a second language is always going to be something that can benefit you, whether those benefits are cognitive, social, or environmental.” deMeurisse said. “It will never be a negative to be exposed to a second language.”
12. What is the finding of the study?
A Speaking two languages contributes to the development of brain.
B. Bilinguals are more competent to deal with incoming information.
C. The bilingual brain may be better at ignoring irrelevant information.
D. The differences between bilinguals and monolinguals are distinct.
13. Why is an English-and-Spanish-speaking person mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To present the fact of bilinguals having advantages.
B. To explain the flexible switching ability of bilinguals.
C. To clarify the concept of bilinguals and monolinguals.
D. To predict the bright future of learning two languages.
14. Which of the 8-year-old boys can be called a functional monolingual?
A. An American boy who is a Chinese beginning learner.
B. A Japanese boy who’s good at English and often uses it in life.
C. A Chinese boy who’s learning English, but uses Chinese only.
D. A French boy who uses both French and English in his daily life.
15. What is the purpose of the study?
A. To raise people’s awareness of being a bilingual.
B. To confirm the benefits of learning more languages.
C. To emphasize the importance of learning foreign languages.
D. To find cognitive differences between bilinguals and monolinguals.

Miles was just like any other energetic kid, full of life and curiosity about the world around him. Spending his days on his family’s farm in Tulelake, California, Miles loved exploring the animals and rural environment around him. But, there was one thing he loved more than his adventures on the farm, and it was his love for the superhero, Batman.
Miles and his dad shared a nightly routine of sitting in the couch and watching an episode of Adam West’s Batman series. Between Batman themed pajamas (睡衣), slippers, bedding, and much more, the caped superhero had officially taken over their home. And when everything in life was going wonderfully, shy of Miles’ second birthday, his parents noticed a dramatic change in their little boy.
In the blink of an eye, Miles and his family’s lives had been transformed from absolute joy and normalcy to complete misery. One doctor’s appointment had changed the entire course of their lives. Miles went from being a healthy, active boy to feeling inactive and unwell.
After running tests and blood-work, doctors had made a heart-breaking discovery. Miles had leukemia (白血病), the most common type of cancer in children and teens. The unexpected diagnosis of their little boy was completely shocking.
After months of chemotherapy (化疗) and radiation, little Miles had become increasingly weak and painful. At such a young age, it had become difficult trying to explain to little Miles why he had to suffer. And whenever Miles’ pain became unbearable, his parents, Nick and Natalie, knew exactly what to do to comfort and uplift him.
Watching Batman would light up his face, and bring out a smile every time. After years of battling the severe disease, Miles had just turned five, and although he had grown, his love for Batman remained. Close to the end of his treatment and in recovery, Nick and Natalie asked their little boy what he had wished for, and without any hesitation, he wanted to be his hero, Batman.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
If Miles wanted to be Batman, then they would make it happen.

5. What does the underlined word “audition” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. A trial performance. B. A close match.
C. A serious dialogue. D. A careful choice.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7.

11. How does the author conclude the passage in the last paragraph?
A. By adding new details. B. By predicting future development.
C. By summarizing the main points. D. By giving advice to the general public.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C

Also, the wind can significantly alter the direction of the ship and how it reacts, adding to the difficulty of docking the ship.”(除了较浅的海床,潮汐和风也给船只进港带来了进一步的挑战。
根据最后一段第三句“A marine pilot goes on board at a crucial time and controls the ship based on his or her knowledge of the port and the situation at hand.”(引航员在关键时刻上船,根据他或她对港口和手头情况的了解来控制船舶。)并结合第一句最后两句“The task of bringing the ship into the harbor and docking it is taken up by a different captain. This captain is called a marine pilot.”(把船带进港口并靠岸的任务由另一个船长承担。
根据最后一段“Marine pilotage is a job that requires a high degree of proficiency as well as quick and independent thinking. Above all, it is about risk management. A marine pilot goes on board at a crucial time and controls the ship based on his or her knowledge of the port and the situation at hand. The pilot is responsible for not only the safety of the ship but also the protection of the port and the marine environment.”(海上引航是一项要求熟练程度高、思维敏捷、独立工作。

A. Speaking two languages contributes to the development of brain.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据文章第三段“Functional monolinguals were defined as those who had two years or less of a foreign language experience in a classroom and use only the first language that they learned as a child. (功能性单语者被定义为那些在课堂上有两年或更少的外语学习经历,并且只使用他们小时候学过的第一语言的人。)”可知,一个学英语的中国男孩,但只说中文,是属于功能性单语者。故选C。
【15题详解】

【答案】
If Miles wanted to be Batman, then they would make it happen. They decided to make him a Batman costume. With that in mind, they set out to create a Batman costume for Miles. They searched the Internet for patterns and materials, and even though they didn’t have the resources or the skill to make an exact replica of the batman’s uniform, they did their best. After days of careful cutting and sewing, a captivating costume was finally created.
The day finally came for Miles to wear his new costume. He was overcome with joy. He had been through so much in his short life, but on that day, he was a happy little boy again. He put on the costume, the cape fluttering behind him as he ran around the house with a smile on his face that could light up the darkest of nights. Although Miles was only a little boy, he put on the costume with joy and ran around the house like a real superhero. This small act of love not only brought Miles an unforgettable moment but also boosted the spirit of his family.
