As for suspension (悬索桥) bridges, the length of the main span (跨度) is the most common method of comparing their sizes and greatness. This list covers some longest main spans of suspension bridges around the world, not longest total lengths, as those main central spans are the places the real engineering magic happens in.
Great Belt Bridge, Denmark
The Great Belt Bridge connects the Danish islands Zealand and Funen. It has a total length of 6,790 meters and a main central span of 1,624 meters, making it the world’s sixth longest main span-for now.
1915 Canakkale Bridge, Turkey
The 1915 Canakkale Bridge, opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 18 March 2022after five years of construction, is a symbol of national pride. Officially, it is the longest suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 2,023 meters.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Japan
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge links the city of Kobe on the Japanese island of Honshu to Iwaya on Awaji Island. It crosses the busy and turbulent Akashi Strait. It was completed in 1998, and at the time, was the longest central span at 1,991 metres, and currently it is just behind the 1915 Canakkale Bridge. The bridge was specially designed, allowing the structure to withstand winds of 286kilometres per hour, earthquakes measuring up o magnitude 8.5, and harsh sea currents.
Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge, China
The Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge is a suspension bridge in Wuhan, Hubei, China. It opened to traffic on October 8, 2019 and is the third longest main central span in the world. The bridge spans 1,700 meters across the famous Yangtze River. The bridge has the world’s longest double-deck bridge span, holding various forms of transportation on its two decks.

A flat tyre happened to us when we moved in to the Mount Barnett Roadhouse on Western Australia. Luckily, three warm-hearted local guys changed our tyre, with serious warnings to get to the service station to fix it.
My wife Jean and I had wanted to experience one of the English-speaking world’s most remote places that non-explorers could manage on their own — the Kimberley region, an area in the northwestern corner of Australia. Eventually,we got the chance.
The only way to explore Kimberley is by the Gibbvery, a very tough path, or by air. We did the latter first, taking the lay of the land from the sky before we set off down the Gibbvery on four wheels. To do that, we went to the jumping-off point for helicopter tours in Kimberley.
“You from Canada, mate?” asked James Bondfield, our young helicopter pilot. “Uh, yes, I am.” When we Canadians open our mouths in Australia, we’re almost always mistaken for Americans. “I worked in Canada,” said Bondfield, explaining that he had built up his flying hours in the oil sands in northern Alberta. He also flew in the forests of Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia before returning home and rising to be at age 30.
During the following two days, Bondfield, like any great guide, took us where we expected to go, then showed us his own secret places there. We first picnicked on top of King George Falls in the Balanggarra Indigenous Protected Area, a 1 million-hectare homeland of First Peoples in Australia, and their rock art, dating back to more than 40,000 years ago, is drawing global attention.
Bondfield landed us near some caves covered in the images of ancient plants and animals. Their brightness was barely faded despite tens of thousands of years of bad weather. We crawled into rock cracks all afternoon, snapped photos and returned with shots of paintings that are among the oldest made by humans anywhere in the world.
22. What problem did the author and his wife face during the travel?
A. They failed to find a service station. B. They had a traffic accident.
C. Their car needed mending in some way. D. Their car lost its way in the wild.
23. What can we say about Bondfield?
A. He was confident of the flight. B. He was strict with passengers.
C. He was fond of flying secretly. D. He was unfamiliar with Canada.
24. What is the highlight of the Balanggarra Indigenous Protected Area?
A. The creature resources. B. The ancient rock art.
C. The changeable weather. D. The undeveloped scenery.
25. How does the author like this experience?
A. Unclear. B. Tolerant. C. Content. D. Regretful.

Brushing your teeth effectively lowers your chances of getting a host of tooth diseases. But the majority of us are running in the opposite direction.
In Sweden, one study found as few as one in ten people practice the best brushing technique. The British health insurer Bupa found that almost half of respondents did not know how to brush their teeth properly in a survey of 2,000 people in the UK.
So what exactly are most of us getting wrong, and how can we change our routine to make sure we brush our teeth effectively? Here’s how to appropriately brush your teeth, according to experts. “Lots of patients understand that what they need to do is remove food remains,” says Josefine Hirschfeld, associate professor and specialist in restorative dentistry at the University of Birmingham. “That is only partially true. It’s much more significant to remove bacteria from the teeth.” These bacteria, around 700 different species, and other microorganisms grow inside everyone’s mouth. “They are living in the sticky film stuck to the teeth and also to the soft tissues,” adds Hirschfeld. “This sticky film can’t be easily rinsed off-it really needs to be manually cleaned.”
Actually, the crucial place to remove it from is not the teeth but the gumline (牙龈). Honestly, “brushing your teeth” is something of a misnomer. “Think of brushing your gumline, rather than the teeth themselves,” says Hirschfeld.
Is it better to brush your teeth before or after breakfast? Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation in the UK, says: “It depends on what you’ve had to eat. More important than the breakfast question is the evening brush, which also has a simpler answer: it should always happen last thing before bed.” And he adds, “Your saliva (口水) is your natural protective mechanism, restricting bacterial growth and tooth decay. The saliva flow reduces overnight, so that’s why it’s vital that all the plaque (牙菌斑) is cleared away before you sleep.”
26. What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To show a cultural difference. B. To compare two study results.
C To Introduce two wrong examples. D. To present a practical background.
27. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The way to clean teeth correctly. B. The process to deal with food remains.
C. The importance of keeping moths clean. D. The consequence of getting into a routine.
28. What is your understanding of “a misnomer“ in Paragraph 4?
A. A poor performance. B. A strange mindset.
C. An inaccurate expression. D. An unnatural behavior.
29. What can we learn from Nigel Carter’s reply?
A. It’s best to clean teeth before breakfast.
B. It’s easy to brush away the plaque before bed.
C. The saliva flow contributes to the tooth preservation.
D. Brushing at night is more effective than any other time.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have developed a portable novel device that can remove particles and salts to generate drinking water. Driven by a small and portable solar panel, the suitcase-sized device requires less power to operate than a cellphone charger. It automatically generates drinking water with the push of one button.
The desalination (脱盐) device relies on a technique called Ion Concentration Polarization (ICP),which was discovered by the research group more than 10 years ago. Rather than filtering (过滤) water, the ICP process applies an electrical field to membranes (膜状物) placed above and below a channel of water. The process removes both dissolved and suspended solids, allowing clean water to pass through the channel. Since it only requires a low-pressure pump, ICP uses less energy than other techniques. But ICP does not always remove all the salts floating in the middle of the channel.
Unlike other portable devices, this one makes use of electrical power to remove particles from drinking water and gets rid of replacement filters, reducing much maintenance expense. This could enable it to be employed in remote and severely resource-limited areas. It could also be used to aid refugees fleeing natural disasters or by soldiers carrying out long-term military operations.
After running lab experiments, they field-tested the device at Boston’s Carson Beach. Although it was quite exciting and surprising, the resulting water went beyond World Health Organization’s quality guidelines, and the device generates drinking water at a rate of 0.3liter per hour. Junghyo Yoon, a research scientist, says, “Right now we are pushing our research to improve the production rate and hoping to make it more convenient for users and increase its energy efficiency.” “How the device could be used by everyone is one of the biggest challenges for us,” Han states. “Another limitation is the use of expensive materials. It would be interesting to see similar systems with low-cost materials.”
30. Where does the device get its power?
A. From a cellphone charger. B. From a low-pressure pump.
C. From a small size suitcase. D. From a portable solar panel.
31. What do we know about ICP?
A. It is energy-saving and user-friendly. B. It is completely new to MIT researchers.
C. It is vital to have a filter and electric field. D. It is able to get rid of all salts from sea water.
32. What can be inferred about the device from the last paragraph?
A. It isn’t widely available for the public.
B. There’s no need for researchers to promote it.
C. Its water production efficiency is satisfactory.
D. Its lab experiments and field tests are a failure.
33. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Remove Solids for Desalination B. Push the Button for Drinking Water
C. Use Filters for Natural Disasters D. Protect Water Sources for the Future

I was standing in the bus terminal (终点站),waiting in the line behind a woman who appeared to be in her 50s. She had a tired look on her face, and her shoulders seemed to sag (下弯) under the weight of her bags. I looked around, finding there seemed nobody feeling interested in the woman except me.
My heart went out to her. Without hesitation, I stepped forward and offered to help her with her bags. She looked at me with surprise, but then nodded gratefully.
As we walked to the waiting area, I struck up a conversation with her. I asked her where she was going and if there was anything I could do to make her journey easier. She told me that her husband died in an accident several months ago, which was a severe blow to the family. Her son was so depressed because of the sudden change and spent all day drinking alcohol and doing nothing. Now she was traveling alone to visit her sick daughter in another city and was feeling overwhelmed with worry and tiredness.
I could understand her well, and I couldn’t help thinking of myself and my family. A year ago, during my first year in the company, I struggled to find my footing (立足点). The rules were unfamiliar, the work was challenging, and I had difficulty recognizing my own worth. I often questioned whether I would be able to make it through each day, as my father was gone, my mother was unemployed, and my young brother was only seven years old, relying on me for support. Fortunately, since I received a badge (徽章) from my little brother, things began taking a positive turn. The words on it had been a source of encouragement for me, and I kept the badge in my purse wherever I went.

1915 Canakkale Bridge Turkey
The 1915 Canakkale Bridge, opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 18 March 2022after five years of construction, is a symbol of national pride. The year “1915” in the official Turkish name honours an important victory against the navies of the United Kingdom and France during World War I.
19. What do we know about the main central span of a suspension bridge?
A. It’s where engineers start the research. B. It’s where design and construction shine.
C. It’s not related to a bridge’s total length. D. It’s a new method of measuring a bridge.
20. What is special about the 1915 Canakkale Bridge?
A. It came into being five years ago. B. It has the longest main central span.
C. It was named after a national president. D. It marks the end of the first world war.

We crawled into rock cracks all afternoon snapped photos and returned with shots of paintings that are among the oldest made by humans anywhere in the world.
A. Unclear. B. Tolerant. C. Content. D. Regretful.
C 23. A 24. B 25. C
由文章第一段中“A flat tyre happened to us when we moved in to the Mount Barnett Roadhouse on Western Australia.(当我们搬到西澳大利亚的巴内特山客栈时,一个轮胎漏气了。)”
从文章第四段““I worked in Canada,” said Bondfield, explaining that he had built up his flying hours in the oil sands in northern Alberta. He also flew in the forests of Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia before returning home and rising to be at age 30.(“我在加拿大工作。” 故选A。
由文章第五段中“We first picnicked on top of King George Falls in the Balanggarra Indigenous Protected Area, a 1 million-hectare homeland of First Peoples in Australia, and their rock art, dating back to more than 40,000 years ago, is drawing global attention.(我们第一次野餐是在巴兰加拉土著保护区的乔治国王瀑布顶上,这是澳大利亚第一民族的100万公顷的家园,他们的岩石艺术可以追溯到4万多年前,引起了全球的关注。)”
结合第二段“My wife Jean and I had wanted to experience one of the English-speaking world’s most remote places that non-explorers could manage on their own — the Kimberley region, an area in the northwestern corner of Australia. Eventually,we got the chance.(我和我的妻子珍想体验一下英语世界中最偏远的地方之一——金伯利地区,这是澳大利亚西北角的一个地区,非探险家也可以自己去。最终,我们得到了这个机会。)”和最后一段“We crawled into rock cracks all afternoon, snapped photos and returned with shots of paintings that are among the oldest made by humans anywhere in the world.(我们整个下午都爬进岩石裂缝里,抓拍照片,回来时拍下了世界上最古老的人类画作。)”
C
C. To Introduce two wrong examples.
D 27. A 28. C 29. C
由文章第二段“In Sweden, one study found as few as one in ten people practice the best brushing technique. The British health insurer Bupa found that almost half of respondents did not know how to brush their teeth properly in a survey of 2,000 people in the UK.(在瑞典,一项研究发现,只有十分之一的人采用最佳刷牙方法。英国健康保险公司Bupa在对英国2000人进行的一项调查中发现,近一半的受访者不知道如何正确刷牙)”可知,这一段通过提供瑞典和英国关于刷牙技巧掌握情况的研究数据,呈现了一个实际的背景,表明许多人并不知道如何正确地刷牙。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。第三段中Josefine Hirschfeld提到““That is only partially true. It’s much more significant to remove bacteria from the teeth.” These bacteria, around 700 different species, and other microorganisms grow inside everyone’s mouth. “They are living in the sticky film stuck to the teeth and also to the soft tissues,” adds Hirschfeld. “This sticky film can’t be easily rinsed off-it really needs to be manually cleaned.”(“这只是部分正确。清除牙齿上的细菌更为重要。”这些细菌,大约有700种不同的种类,以及其他微生物生长在每个人的口腔内。赫希菲尔德补充说:“它们生活在粘在牙齿和软组织上的粘性薄膜中。”“这种粘稠的薄膜不容易洗掉——它真的需要人工清洁。”)”这表明本段主要讲述的是正确清洁牙齿的方式,即去除牙齿上的细菌和粘附在牙齿上的粘膜。故选A。
根据划线词所在段落“Actually, the crucial place to remove it from is not the teeth but the gumline (牙龈). Honestly, “brushing your teeth” is something of a misnomer. “Think of brushing your gumline, rather than the teeth themselves,” says Hirschfeld.(实际上,清除它的关键部位不是牙齿,而是牙龈线。老实说,“刷牙”有点a misnomer。“想想刷牙的牙龈线,而不是牙齿本身,”赫希菲尔德说)”Hirschfeld指出,“brushing your teeth”某种程度上是个误称,因为实际上我们应该关注的是刷牙龈线,而不是牙齿本身。这表明“brushing your teeth”这一表达在一定程度上是不准确的。“misnomer”意为“误称、不恰当的名称”。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段Nigel Carter解释说““Your saliva (口水) is your natural protective mechanism, restricting bacterial growth and tooth decay. The saliva flow reduces overnight, so that’s why it’s vital that all the plaque (牙菌斑) is cleared away before you sleep.”(“你的唾液是你的自然保护机制,限制细菌生长和蛀牙。唾液流量在夜间会减少,所以在睡觉前清除所有的牙菌斑是至关重要的。”)”,这表明唾液流动有助于牙齿的保护,因为它能限制细菌生长和蛀牙。故选C。
D
D 31. A 32. A 33. B
