Ash Barty, the world’s No.1 women’s tennis player, shocked the sports world by announcing that she would leave the tennis court forever. Barty made the announcement in a video she made public on the social media site, Instagram. In the video she discussed her thoughts about retiring with her good friend Casey Dellacqua. Dellacqua, who is also a retired tennis player, used to be Barty’s doubles partner.
“I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself as a professional tennis player,” she said. “It’s just I don’t have that in me anymore, 80 it’s times for me to put the bats down and go after other dreams.”
Even though she is only 25, Barty has been playing tennis for a long time. She started when she was four and turned professional when she was 14. For over two years, Barty has been ranked the world’s No.1 women’s tennis player. She has won 15 important women’s singles tournaments in the world in her career, not including some small-sized competitions. This includes three “Grand Slam” events—the biggest prizes in tennis. In 2019, Barty won the French Open. In 2021,she won Wimbledon. And this January, she won the Australian Open, becoming the first person born in Australia to win the Australian Open in 44 years.
Other tennis players retired when they were young. Some returned to the sport after a while. But very few players went out while they were No.1 While many other players support Barty’s decision, the majority of tennis fans see her move as a loss for tennis. Barty created a lot of interest in tennis and inspired many younger players to take up the sport. Barty said she knew some people wouldn’t understand her decision, but she’s okay with that. “I’ve given absolutely everything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis,” she said, “and I’m really happy with that.”
24. What was the shocking news to the sports world?

Are you always looking at your mobile phone as you’re walking, playing with it as you’re studying, and reluctant to put it down as you go to bed? Tired of a life controlled by their mobile phones, many young people seem to be intent on working out how to overcome it.
One of the popular gadgets is the mobile phone isolation box. Users simply put their mobile phone in the box and set a time lock that will ban them from having access to the phone for a set time. Some boxes allow users to respond to emergencies. These isolation boxes can be adapted to almost all types of mobile phones on the market. The locking time generally ranges from one minute to 12 hours, and the price is generally about 100-200 Yuan. Xianfeng Technology, one of the sellers on Taobao says: “Our main customers are students and office workers. They usually ask for engraving some inspirational quotes on the box when buying. Some parents who feel their children are wasting time on Douyin and ruining their studies are also buying them. This physical box is much better than software on phones.” Xianfeng’s after-sales comment section is filled with positive comment from buyers who say the box has helped them become more self-disciplined.
However, Lin Tianqi, a college student says, because the lock time is set by users, whether they can achieve their goal depends on the individual. A five-hour lockup is too harsh, she says, but one of her friends locks the box for just 30 minutes, she seems to delude herself. Liang Wenyu, another college student, sneers at these “flashy” attempts. “Regardless of the effectiveness of the isolation box, you might as well lock yourself up. As simple as that.” he says. “I can understand why they need these blood pumping quotes on the box—because they lack discipline. How about simply taking back your time. Self-disciplined people are bound to succeed without such gimmicks.”
28. What can we learn about the mobile phone isolation box?
A. It adapts to all types of mobile phones.
B. It allows users to use their mobile phones for a set time.
C. It has good market prospects.
D. It helps users abandon their mobile phones.
29. What does the underlined word “delude” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Abandon. B. Enjoy. C. Satisfy. D. Cheat.
30. What can we infer from paragraph3?
A. The lock time is a key factor for self-disciplined.
B. Self-discipline is up to the person, not an isolation box.
C. Two college students’ views on isolation box are unreasonable.
D. The isolation box needs improving due to its ineffectiveness.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Many young people attempt to stay away from mobile phones.
B. Different views on the mobile phone isolation box.
C. The mobile phone isolation box is used to help reduce mobile phone use.
D. Self-discipline is of great importance.
D
It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners, why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say, they hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech — “I have a dream”, you may notice that he stumbles over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
32. You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ________.
A. you find the way of speech-making more important
B. you don’t fully understand the speech
C. you attention is on the content
D. you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
33. What does the underlined phrase “stumbles over” in Paragraph 2?
A. Walks wrongly. B. Makes an error with.
C. Misunderstands. D. Forgets.
34 It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
B. giving a speech is like giving a performance
C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D. the more mistake a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
35. Which of the following statements is true?
A. If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech.
B. Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message.
C. Speech-making is a kind of performance.
D. Martin Luther King is not a good speaker.

When a package from an e-commerce shopping platform arrives on the doorstep, how many of us think about where it comes from? ____36____ Perhaps even fewer will think about the carbon footprint produced in the whole process.

But fortunately, there are a few things we can do to lessen the blow. First and foremost is green supply chain management, which integrates (整合) eco-friendly measures into the entire supply chain process, from product design to procurement (采购), and from product delivery to end-of-life disposal (处理). ____38____ Rather, green supply chain management requires an integrated approach, ensuring that every activity in the supply chain is more environmentally friendly. Given the huge amount of packages, it is estimated that at least 100 million metres of tape can be reduced each year.
2. Green warehousing (储仓)
Behind an efficient operation are large, highly-automated warehouses. B. It is impossible for one party to achieve this on their own.

Sparky and his human partner Joel were walking down Maple Street when they spotted a building on fire. Joel and Sparky ran to the building to help. Joel heard the cries of a woman inside the building, so he ran inside to save her. Sparky followed Joel into the building. Joel could hear the woman crying, but he couldn’t find her because of all the smoke from the fire. It was Sparky who was finally able to find the woman. Sparky led Joel and the woman out, but Sparky suddenly ran back into the building. The fire was too hot for Joel to go back inside, and he shouted at Sparky to come back. A few moments later, Sparky came out of the building pulling something behind him. It was a baby. Sparky was able to save the baby’s life, but the furry hero died from serious injuries just after coming out of the burning building.

A The lock time is a key factor for self-disciplined.
C 29. D 30. B 31. B
根据第二段中“One of the popular gadgets is the mobile phone isolation box.(其中一个流行的小玩意是手机隔离盒)”和“Xianfeng’s after-sales comment section is filled with positive comment from buyers who say the box has helped them become more self-disciplined.(咸丰的售后评论区充满了消费者的积极评价,他们说这个盒子帮助他们变得更自律了)”可知,客户对手机隔离盒很满意,它很受欢迎,由此推知,手机隔离盒有良好的市场前景。
根据划线词所在句“A five-hour lockup is too harsh, she says, but one of her friends locks the box for just 30 minutes, she seems to delude herself.(她说,把箱子锁上5个小时太苛刻了,但她的一个朋友只把箱子锁上30分钟,她似乎在delude自己)”中“but”可推知,把手机锁箱子里5个小时时间太长,太苛刻,但只锁30分钟似乎又太短,太敷衍,所以她的朋友是自欺欺人,划线词与cheat同义,表示“欺骗”。
根据第三段中Lin Tianqi的观点“the lock time is set by users, whether they can achieve their goal depends on the individual.(锁定时间由用户自行设定,能否达到目标取决于个人)”和Liang Wenyu的观点“I can understand why they need these blood pumping quotes on the box—because they lack discipline. How about simply taking back your time. Self-disciplined people are bound to succeed without such gimmicks.(我能理解他们为什么要在盒子上写这些让人热血沸腾的格言,因为他们缺乏纪律。直接把你的时间收回来怎么样。自律的人在没有这些噱头的情况下一定会成功)”可推知,自律是由人决定的,而不是靠隔离盒。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,本文介绍了一种帮助人们克服手机依赖的设备——手机隔离盒,并通过举例的方式对其作用进行了正反方观点的陈述和对比。所以本文的主题是对手机隔离盒的不同看法。故选B项。
D. Forgets.
34. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
B. giving a speech is like giving a performance
C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D. the more mistake a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
35. Which of the following statements is true?
A. If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech.
B. Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message.
C. Speech-making is a kind of performance.
D. Martin Luther King is not a good speaker.
C 33. B 34. A 35. B
根据第二段“Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.(因为你把注意力集中在他传达的信息上,而不是他的演讲方式上)”可知,你不记得演讲中明显的错误,因为你的注意力在内容上,而不是他的演讲方式上。
根据划线部分上文“Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. (即使你在演讲中犯了一个明显的错误,那也没关系)”可知,本段主要讲述的是在演讲中出错也没关系,之后用Martin Luther King的演讲举例。由此推知,Martin Luther King在演讲中也犯了错误,因此划线词组stumbles over与makes an error with “犯错误”意思接近。故选B项。

When a package from an e-commerce shopping platform arrives on the doorstep, how many of us think about where it comes from? ____36____ Perhaps even fewer will think about the carbon footprint produced in the whole process.
It is not merely the “last mile”—the delivery, which adds to our carbon footprints but every step: from when a product was made, all the way to when it makes it into our hands. ____37____. The following are two typical examples of it.
1. Package design
When we think about a single package, the amount of tape used to secure each one might seem insignificant. ____39____ It turns out that narrowing the tape, from 54mm to 45mm, can make a big difference. Given the huge amount of packages, it is estimated that at least 100 million metres of tape can be reduced each year.
2. Green warehousing (储仓)
Behind an efficient operation are large, highly-automated warehouses. In some of the automated areas, robots can operate in the dark, so there is no need for lighting systems. ____40____ Inside the warehouses, the trend of going paperless by using electronic order slips saves a large amount of paper.
A. The answer is probably not too many.
B. It is impossible for one party to achieve this on their own.
C. Put simply, the supply chain is extremely carbon intensive (密集的).
D. Actions were taken to ensure a responsible and recycled process.
E. But what if we are talking about the billions of parcels used in this industry?
F. One solution is using packaging boxes that can be circulated throughout the ecosystem.
G. The rain collection system below the warehouses serves as a source of water supply.
A 37. C 38. B 39. E 40. G
根据上文“When a package from an e-commerce shopping platform arrives on the doorstep, how many of us think about where it comes from? (当来自电子商务购物平台的包裹到达门口时,我们中有多少人会想它来自哪里?)”可知,空格前内容提出了一个问题,A项意为“答案是可能不会有太多人。”选项内容能够回答上文的问题,且选项中的“not too many”与下文的“even fewer”相呼应,不会有太多人想包裹来自哪里,也许更少的人会想到整个过程中产生的碳足迹。故选A。
根据上文“It is not merely the “last mile”—the delivery, which adds to our carbon footprints but every step: from when a product was made, all the way to when it makes it into our hands.
根据下文“Rather, green supply chain management requires an integrated approach, ensuring that every activity in the supply chain is more environmentally friendly. (相反,绿色供应链管理需要一种综合方法,确保供应链中的每一项活动都更加环保。)”可知,要想解决碳足迹问题,绿色供应链管理需要一种综合方法,B项意为“单靠一方是不可能做到这一点的。”选项内容能够引起下文,单靠一方是不可能实现绿色供应链的,绿色供应链管理需要一种综合方法,选项中的“one party”与下文的“an integrated approach”形成对比。故选B。
【39题详解】
根据上文“When we think about a single package, the amount of tape used to secure each one might seem insignificant. (当我们考虑单个包裹时,用于保护每个包裹的胶带数量似乎微不足道。)”可知,上文内容讲述的是关于保护包裹的胶带的用量问题,E项意为“但是,如果我们谈论的是这个行业中数十亿包裹使用的胶带呢?”选项内容能够承接上文,一个包裹使用的胶带数量可能微不足道,但数十亿包裹使用的胶带数量就很庞大。故选E。
【40题详解】
根据上文“In some of the automated areas, robots can operate in the dark, so there is no need for lighting systems. (在一些自动化领域,机器人可以在黑暗中操作,因此不需要照明系统。)”可知,上文内容讲述的是高度自动化的仓库是如何节约能源的,G项意为“仓库下方的雨水收集系统作为供水来源。”选项内容能够承接上文,上文讲述的是如何节约电能,选项内容讲述的是如何节约水资源。故选G。
