It’s a hot day today. When you jump into a swimming pool to keep cool, do you know how animals fight against the heat? Animals have their own ways to keep cool in the heat. Here are some examples.
Few animals can sweat like humans do, but horses can. They sweat to keep cool. If a horse keeps exercising for one hour, it can lose 15 liters of fluid (液体) by sweating.
Dogs can not sweat, but they can keep cool by panting (气喘). Panting means breathing shortly and quickly. In summer, we often see dogs putting out their tongues and breathing shortly and quickly.
An African elephant’s ears can grow to be 1.8 meters long and 1.2 meters wide. On the back of an elephant’s ears, there are many tiny blood vessels (血管). When the temperature of the elephant’s blood is higher than the temperature of the environment, heat is released (释放) from the ears. Besides, elephants also flap (拍打) their ears to create cool wind. The wind can make the elephant feel cool, too. Generally speaking, an elephant’s ears can cool its body by up to 5℃. Isn’t it amazing?

Among the traditional clothes, qipao, a dress with a history of over 100 years, has become a symbol of beauty and elegance of Chinese women.
Illustrator (插画师) Lu Mei, also a qipao lover, has been creating paintings of a woman in qipao for years. Her book Cheongsam with beautiful illustrations tells how the style of the dress has changed in the past 100 years.
Lu Mei has been interested in qipao since she read a book by famous writer Zhang Ailing (1920—1995). In 2007, when she was asked to draw the illustrations for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book, Lu agreed and started her research on the dress. According to some books, people first wore qipao in the late 1910s and it looked like the robes (长袍) which were long and wide and only worn by men at that time. In the 1930s, the dress was made into a different style—slimer cuts (较修身裁剪) and higher splits (开叉).
“Nowadays qipao becomes a fashion choice for women and a symbol of traditional Chinese culture once again, but the dress is different from what it used to be. Because of the film In the Mood for Love, the dress now is much more close-fitting (紧身的),” Lu said.
Lu Mei loves qipao, but she does not often wear it in her everyday life. Instead of wearing the dress, Lu hopes readers can learn something meaningful behind the clothes.
8. What does the underlined word “elegance” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. 勤劳 B. 宽容 C. 优雅 D. 朴素
9. Which of the following is TRUE about Zhang Ailing according to the passage?
A. She was born in Shanghai. B. She is a well-known illustrator.

A. Short and Slim. B. Much more close-fitting.
C. Slimmer cuts and higher splits. D. Look like robes.
11. What can we infer from the passage?
A. People first wore qipao in the late 1930s.
B. Illustrator is an interesting job.
C. Lu Mei thinks the culture of qipao is more meaningful.
D. To Chinese women, qipao is their favorite clothes.
12. What is the writer’s purpose according to the passage?

Everyone has lived in social groups since the day of birth. Some small things may often cause misunderstanding (误会). However, if we can put ourselves in other people’s places, we may understand their feelings, and then the bad situations will be changed completely.
Understanding others is influenced by several things — feelings, tiredness and illness. This means that if a person is happy, he or she will be more willing to understand others. But if a person feels angry, he is less likely (可能) to understand other people.
Listening is one of the best ways to understand others’ feelings, and it can sometimes help people get along well with each other. If people are talking, listening to them carefully will make them feel better. While many people just listen without any opinions, it may make the talk boring.
No matter what kinds of roles we play in society, when we have different opinions, we should be calm to think about the situation we’re facing firstly. Every small action can build a good social connection and make us have a better understanding with each other.

In the 1930s, the dress was made into a different style—slimer cuts (较修身的裁剪) and higher splits (开叉).
C. She died at the age of sixty-five. D. Her book described qipao.
10. Which can describe the style of qipao in the 1930s?
A. Short and Slim. B. Much more close-fitting.
C. Slimmer cuts and higher splits. D. Look like robes.
11 What can we infer from the passage?
A. People first wore qipao in the late 1930s.
B. Illustrator is an interesting job.
C. Lu Mei thinks the culture of qipao is more meaningful.
D. To Chinese women, qipao is their favorite clothes.
12. What is the writer’s purpose according to the passage?
A To discuss why people love qipao. B. To encourage women to wear qipao.
C. To tell how qipao was made. D. To introduce a qipao lover to people.

But if a person feels angry, he is less likely (可能的) to understand other people.
