How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? I believe the answer must be “YES”.
Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting smaller every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
Therefore, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates(心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality(虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group. The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our brains to rest and slow down, and can leave us feeling happier and less stressed. Another example from Canada also shows nature is good for health. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want people to enjoy nature in their everyday life. In Dubai, people plan to build a new shopping mall with a large garden, so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. And South Korea has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. Getting close to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and exercise a lot outside. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.
31. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. People spend more time inside than outside.
B. People think nature is good for our bodies.
C. Only teenagers spend time outside every day.
D. The number of people to parks changes every day.
32. After the maths test, which of the following helped slow the heart rates of people?
A. The advice from the doctor. B. Pictures and sounds of nature.
C. The maths problems in the test. D. The real natural world.
33. What do the results of the studies show in paragraph 3?
A. The maths test is bad for health as it makes people nervous.
B. People’s heart rates get slower in a 3D-virtual-reality room.
C. More and more Canadians will move to live near parks.
D. Nature can help people be more relaxed and healthier.
34. To help people enjoy nature, which of the following is not done by the countries?
A. Building new forests near cities. B. Inventing a brain development programme.
C. Planning a green area for shoppers. D. Having classes and doing sports in the forest.
35. What can we learn from the last sentence of the passage?

Fear is the bad feeling that one has when he is in danger or when a particular thing frightens him. A German proverb goes “Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” This is quite true as fear will often cause people to imagine the worst and act unreasonably. In that case, can fear be any good?
Personally, I think a small amount of fear is good and even necessary as it not only acts as a form of control and prevention but also serves to motivate oneself. However, being overly fearful is bad as it will seriously hamper man’s progress. In this passage, I will discuss how fear can be a double-edged sword (双刃剑) bringing both advantages and disadvantages to man.
Fear is good as it prevents people from doing dangerous acts and prompts (促使) them to control and regulate (约束) their behavior. Next, fear is good as it is a powerful motivator (促进因素). For people themselves such as students and businessmen, the fear of failure will prompt them to work hard and put in their best effort in their studies and business undertakings. This will lead to results and progress.
Although fear is good, man must keep in mind that too much fear may be harmful to his development. Being overly fearful of the unknown will prevent people from-venturing (敢于去) into areas previously unexplored. For example, in the area of space exploration, Apolo 11 would have never landed the first humans on the moon if they had let fear get in the way of their dream. To get great achievements, man must learn to beat his fear and find the courage to overcome the difficulties that life presents. Only then can the human race continue to make progress and enjoy the sweet smell of success.
In sum, fear is good as it will finally lead to a well-controlled and motivated (积极的) society. Nevertheless, people must keep in mind that they should not be clouded (使糊涂) by fear as it will stop their progress. I believe that a small dose (剂量) of fear and a good deal of courage will make a great man as such a man will have the spirit to follow his goals and the sense (意识) to act responsibly in the process.
36. What’s the meaning of the sentence “Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” in paragraph 1?
A. If a person feels fear, the wolf will be bigger.
B. If a wolf is bigger, the person will feel terrible.
C. Fear makes persons think the wolf is smaller than before.
D. Fear will cause people to imagine the worst and act unreasonably.
37. What does “hamper” mean in paragraph 2?
A. prevent B. make C. overcome D. help
38. The writer mentions Apolo 11 in Paragraph 4 to show that ________.
A. exploration helps us to realize our dreams
B. people can overcome fears that life presents
C. exploring the space is a good way to overcome fears
D. people should not be overly afraid of the unknown areas
39. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Failure in business can lead to good results.
B. Fear can help people learn to behave properly.
C. Failure in studies can help students make great progress.
D. Fear of failure in studies can encourage students to study hard.
40. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To encourage us to overcome fear and act responsibly.
B. To explain why a little amount of fear is of benefit to people.
C. To advise us to be neither overly fearful nor completely fearless.
D. To introduce the ways of preventing us from being overly fearful.

A. Nature is more important than cities. B. Country life is healthier than city life.
C. Nature should be part of people’s life. D. People have lived in cities for so long.
