Hawksmoor
If you like a good steak, immediately book a table at Hawksmoor. Yuzu
Yuzu is your best choice for good Japanese food in the city. It’s a Japanese tapas bar, which means Yuzu serves everything from sashimi to tempura to gyoza in a way that allows the guest to try it all. It’s open for lunch and dinner, and reservations (预订) are recommended.
Hispi
Head to South Manchester to discover Hispi, a casual restaurant serving some of the most delicious dishes in the city. The menu is familiar, with selections like smoked lamb and miso-glazed squash. There’s a special Sunday lunch menu serving two or three courses, and families are welcome thanks to a beautiful kids menu. Hispi is part of a popular group of restaurants, including Burnt Truffle and Sticky Walnut. Book in advance, if possible.
Mana
Mana has been Manchester’s first Michelin-starred restaurant since 1977, which is by reservation only. Everything is presented as a set menu with an optional wine pairing, but you get to make a few choices along the way. Go for the shorter lunch menu if you want to get the experience on a budget.

Shen Yue, 26, was born in East China’s Shandong province, a region that many people believe prioritizes secure, officially-budgeted positions such as civil service. However, Shen’s decision to dive into the unpredictable world of full-time video blogging after graduating in 2019, with a focus on the popular game League of Legends (LOL), raised eyebrows.
Initially, Shen’s family supported his career choice, but when he struggled to make ends meet within the first year, they began to advise him to seek a more secure job. But Shen remained determined and persisted with his chosen path.
A turning point in Shen’s career occurred at the start of this year when he posted a seemingly odd video, replacing the D and F keys on a keyboard, crucial for in-game character actions, with a foot pedal. Describing it as a “pointless invention” created for fun, Shen admitted that the video initially received limited attention. But a message from a viewer who had lost an arm in a car accident changed everything. The viewer, who relied on one hand to play games, sought guidance on creating a similar foot pedal. “I hadn’t realized that there would be disabled players in need of this kind of pedal,” Shen said. Despite his limited knowledge of circuit-building, he managed to produce 10 different foot pedals and traveled to Chongqing to personally assist the player in installation(安装), gaining valuable feedback.
“Due to physical limitations, this player could only operate two simple game characters,” Shen explained. However, with this device, which allows the player to pedal with his foot, he can now play games like a regular person using a keyboard.
Recognizing the diverse needs of disabled players nationwide, Shen started providing free assistance in making these pedals. The continuous feedback within the community encouraged Shen to improve his inventions constantly.
Shen’s videos recording his experiences touched many internet users, earning him the title of the true “legend” of LOL. “I’m honored to receive this praise. But the real legends were the audience whose support had made the needs of disabled players easier to understand,” he said.
24. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. Shen’s career was thought to be promising.
B. Shen’s difficulties didn’t defeat him.
C. Shen’s family were always for his choice.
D. Shen’s job focused on developing games.
25. The viewer’s message made Shen realize that _________.
A. there was some use for the foot pedal
B. different foot pedals should be created
C. he helped the disabled use pedals
D he needed to accept others’ feedback
26. Which of the following best describes Shen?
A. Modest and honest. B. Determined and creative.
C. Helpful and brave. D. Kind and humorous.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Usefulness of “Uselessness” B. Blogs of a blogger
C. Possibility of the Disabled D. Knowing of “Unknowns”
C
In 1932, Nature published an article entitled Relations between Pure and Applied Science, which argued strongly for the application of scientific ideas to get the recognition it deserved. As time goes by, the statement still rings true; the importance of applied science should not be ignored.
In medicine, the term “bench to bedside” is often used. It describes how fundamental discoveries in biology become the techniques and medicines that save or improve lives. Similarly, for the development of new improved materials and energy systems, we need applied science to develop our initial discoveries into usable technologies. It is this application of insight into a system that brings discoveries out of the laboratory and into the everyday world. The line between the pure and the applied science is not a hard border, but a bridge linking the two.
Today’s world faces problems with complex causes. From the continuing impact of SARS-CoV-2 to the crisis of climate change and the work necessary to achieve the Sustainable(可持续的) Development Goals, science and technology will play an important role in addressing the problems we collectively face. If the world is to build a sustainable and equitable future, with rising standards of living for all, advances in our scientific understanding need to go from the bench to not just the bedside but into every aspect of life.
To provide a home for these studies, we recognize that manuscripts presenting applications should be assessed on different criteria(标准) from manuscripts reporting a novel discovery. It is important to sometimes put aside the requirement for novel insight and rather consider potential uses and current challenges facing effective application. When reaching a decision on the suitability of such manuscripts for publication, we will use as guidance parameters(参数) of an application, as well as an assessment of how market ready a technology or application is.
28. Why does the author mention the article published in Nature?
A. To promote a magazine. B. To offer an example.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To attract more readers.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The importance of applied science.
B. The research into “bench to bedside”.
C. The similarities between pure and applied science.
D. The contrast between medicine and applied science.
30. What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Handling. B. Accepting. C. Writing. D. Exposing.
31. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A research paper.
C. A guidebook. D. A biology textbook.
D
Nightmares could be reduced by hearing a sound while you sleep that you previously associated with a positive ending to a bad dream during therapy (治疗).
Up to 8 percent of people report having problems with nightmares. The standard treatment is image rehearsal therapy (IRT), which 30 percent of people don’t respond to. IRT involves repeating a previous nightmare but changing it to have a more positive ending. To aid memory recall, some treatments involve an individual hearing a specific sound as they form memories and then having this same sound played to them while they sleep. This is often done during the non-rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, because dreams and nightmares are more common in REM sleep.
Testing the potential of this approach for nightmares, Lampros Perogamvros at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and his colleagues first divided 36 people who had more than one nightmare per week into two groups. Both groups were taught how to carry out IRT themselves at home, which they did for 5 minutes a day over two weeks. Only one group, however, listened to a neutral piano tone while they carried out their IRT. During these two weeks, both groups wore a head band every night that tracked their sleep stage by discovering brain activity. When they entered REM sleep, both groups were played the tone that only one group was exposed to during their at-home IRT. This tone was played at 10 second intervals. At the end of the two weeks, the two groups both reported having more positive dreams.
By carrying out this treatment in people’s homes, it could become a widespread intervention to relieve nightmares, says Mark Blagrove at Swansea University, UK. “You could not only have people treated with IRT in the clinician’s room, or therapist’s room, but people could possibly be sent home with these instruments that spot the stages of sleep and have the auditory (听觉的) signal that was played when they were doing IRT presented again during sleep.” he says.
32. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. IRT helps memory. B. IRT makes memories form.
C. Not all respond to IRT. D. The new treatment is popular.
33. How did Lampros and his colleagues test the potential of IRT?
A. By analyzing data. B. By performing a survey.
C. By referring to documents. D. By conducting an experiment.
34. What is Mark Blagrove’s attitude towards the treatment?
A. Unclear. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Approving
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To share a discovery. B. To confirm a concept.
C. To offer a suggestion. D. To make an explanation.

Link struck a match and pushed the pile of grass to one side with his foot. By the light of the match, he discovered a dog curled up (蜷缩) in a heap, with one foreleg stuck awkwardly out in front of him at an impossible angle. Although the dog was in great pain, he still gazed at the man who bent above him softly, with a mixture of pride and need for help in his brown eyes.
Moved by such an expression, Link knelt down to examine his hurts. He recognized the dog as a collie (柯利牧羊犬). The collie reminded him that several years before, he had ever witnessed one Airedale thrown from a car and killed by a close-following vehicle. Judging by the mud on the dog’s snowy chest and the oily marks on his back, he guessed this collie might have suffered a similar fate (命运), landing so heavily that it broke his front leg and ended up in the ditch covered in mud and oil.
Link couldn’t imagine how long the dog had been lying there in pain. Seeing the serious hurts and hearing his howl (嚎叫) of pain Link was at a loss, not knowing how to help him out successfully. He had planned to leave him behind but a voice inside him encouraged him to step forward bravely. Then Link suddenly realized that maybe the kindest thing to do for the dog was put him out of his suffering. He gently approached the badly hurt animal, whispering softly, “Sorry, honey! Forgive me please!” Picking up a stone off the ground with a heavy heart, Link turned back to where the dog lay, thinking to himself, “How terrible! Do I have the right to end his life?” His heart beat wildly as he cast scared glances on the dog. However, at the thought of his closed eyes and howls, he finally made the toughest decision. Watching the poor dog closely, he balanced the rock and prepared to deliver the deadly blow.

【答案】 Link was about to strike with all his strength when the dog opened his eyes. He attempted to sit up but he couldn’t even move a step because of his serious injuries. However, after several attempts, he finally succeeded in standing up with a howl of pain, which surprised Link greatly. He stepped back and back, a sense of pity and guilt overwhelming him and the stone in his hands dropped to the ground unconsciously. He took off his overcoat in a hurry and coated the dog with care. His watery eyes welled up with pain but a light of hope. Link at once took the dog and headed to the nearest pet hospital.
The doctor in the pet hospital took the dog into the operating room. After the door was closed Link walked up and down, waiting outside of the room anxiously. Though the vet told him that they would spare no effort to save the dog, it was really in bad condition. In the bottom of his heart, he hoped the dog could go through the operation. It took a long time before the door reopened. He walked up and asked how it was going. The vet comforted him and told him that the operation went very well, leading him to the next office. Until then did he breathe a sign of relief.
