Early winter is a busy season for the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve
(黄河三角洲国家级自然保护区), located in Dongying, Shandong Province. The
reserve, an important wintering and stopover site for migratory birds, has launched new
projects and applied new technologies to restore (恢复) the wetlands and monitor
birds.
Of the nine major flyways around the world, two flyways pass through the reserve.
Millions of birds make stopovers here every year, making it “an international airport”
for migratory birds and a key area for their protection.
The reserve occupies about 153,000 hectares(公顷), with wetlands making up
more than 70 percent. Water supply is key to the protection of wetlands and the whole
ecosystem. Over the past few years, the reserve has launched new water supplies,
making more water from the Yellow River into the reserve to restore the wetland.
At the Environmental Monitoring Centre, Zhao Yajie and her colleagues have
found 198 nests with newborn babies. “We first spotted a pair of rare birds here in
2003. However, we had no idea whether our close-distance observation ( 观 察)
disturbed them,” said Zhao.
To solve this problem, the reserve has built an air-ground-ocean monitoring
network. The network provides 24-hour real-time monitoring in key areas, using
technologies such as 5G and edge AI.
The network can recognise (辨认出) birds, showing their species and health
status on the screen. The recognition accuracy(精确性) is over 90 percent.
“The use of technology helps reduce the influence of human activities on the natural
environment,” said Shan. “Observing without disturbing and safeguarding without over-
intervention—we see this as the greatest respect humans can show to nature. ”
8. Why is the reserve thought to be “an international airport” for migratory birds?
A. Because there is an international airport nearby.
B. Because the reserve is a key area for birds protection.
C. Because plenty of birds make stopovers here.
D. Because a large number of birds fly over here.
9. What do we know about the monitoring network?
A. The network could recognise all birds accurately.
B. The network could only observe birds from ground.
C. Using the technologies does harm to the environment.
D. It is built to monitor birds without disturbing them.
10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The network is good for observers as well as the birds.
B. The network completely solves all problems.
C. Birds protection is more important to the wetlands.
D. Few technologies are used to help observe the birds.
11. What may be the best title of the text?
A. The National Nature Reserve B. New Tech to Protect Migratory Birds
C. Protect Wetlands D. The Monitoring Network of Birds
D
I get my best ideas when Im doing nothing. Its strange how the mind connects
better when its not disturbed.
