03 Period Ⅲ Extended reading & Project Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练 1 A My son Joshua was nine and we were living a hard life. Before Christmas I still hadn’t managed to buy him the gifts. One snowy day, while walking downtown, I saw a large poster of a fat Santa with a bag of toys before a fireplace, welcoming children to visit Santa at the department store before Christmas. An idea hit me. Rather than seeking financial support and donations at the church, I’d make Christmas for Joshua using my imagination. Santa was coming to town, but what about Mrs Claus? I headed towards the manager’s office of the store and applied for a job as Mrs Claus to accompany Mr Claus. The manager thought about the idea and hired me on the spot. The next morning, I carefully packed my home-made costume. After ducking into a changing room, I emerged dressed as Mrs Claus. Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the manager’s office. “Good morning, I’m Mrs Claus.” “Good morning, Stella.” Though taken by surprise, she didn’t show it. 刷阅读理解 2 I loved the job. As the month wore on, my best friend Liz brought Joshua and her daughter Katie downtown to visit Santa on the last Saturday before Christmas. The two kids were excited about seeing Santa and getting a treat. Later I saw Joshua pass his wish list to Santa, while he pointed to Mrs Claus who was talking with the waiting children. Then old Santa tucked it in his pocket. At the end of the last day, and after an endless line-up (节目安排) of children, the store manager gave me a substantial pay cheque including a generous bonus. I was overjoyed. Now I could make Christmas for Joshua without having to resort to donations. Late on Christmas Eve, there was a knock on my apartment door. As I stood speechless at the door, Santa dropped a bag of presents on the floor and disappeared into the darkness. When I opened the bag, I found four beautifully wrapped presents ready to place under the tree. Tears welled in my eyes as I read the tags: Things for Stella, Love Santa. 刷阅读理解 【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者想办法挣钱为孩子准备圣诞礼物,结果自己收到了礼物的故事。 1.What idea did the author think up seeing the poster?( ) D A.Looking for a sales job in the store. Labor Day also marks the end of summer. Many students return to school after Labor Day. The hot days of summer turn cooler. Many Americans celebrate the holiday with an outdoor family barbecue. But Labor Day started with a struggle. On May 1, 1889, workers demonstrated (游行示威) on the streets of Paris, France. International Labor Day was born. Most industrialized countries in the world—except the United States and Canada—celebrate Labor Day on the first of May. On September 5, 1882, in New York City, about 10,000 workers marched through the streets to show the strength of labor organizations. For many years after that, American workers used the first Monday in September to demand better working conditions and pay. Music was a part of many of those marches. 刷阅读理解 9 Labor songs traditionally tell stories of conflicts (冲突) and hopes for a better life. Many classic American labor songs came from workers in the coal mines of the South. Mine owners opposed workers’ unions. In Kentucky, the company police searched for union leaders. They waited outside a worker’s home for several days to stop him from organizing. The coal miner’s wife, Florence Reece, stayed inside with her children. She wrote this song, “Which Side Are You On?” Another American labor song is called “Bread and Roses”.Based on a poem by James Oppenheim, it was published in December of 1911. The poem speaks about the women’s labor movement. At that time, conditions in factories, where many women worked, were dreadful. A fire at a clothing factory in New York killed 146 people. A month after Oppenheim’s poem was published, textile (纺织品) workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts went on strike. Their protest won them higher pay and better working conditions. Oppenheim’s poem received more attention. 刷阅读理解 【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了美国劳工节的由来。这个全国性的节日始于100多年前,是为了尊重低收入的工厂工人而设立的。 1.What does Labor Day mean to students in the United States?( ) B A.It’s time to have a barbecue.
