01 Period I Starting out & Understanding ideas Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练 1 A My best friends travelled to stay with my family last weekend. When she arrived, she went straight to the kitchen and, without asking, ate some dried fruit. She wasn’t being rude. I knew she would do this. We’ve known each other for almost 20 years. She can eat anything she wants from my kitchen. Indeed, I bought her favourite fruits and snacks that morning. Our long weekend together was simple. I was recovering from surgery and couldn’t go to shopping malls. We passed the time running errands (差事), but there was never a quiet moment. We’ve lived in different cities for almost a decade.Reunions demand conversation. Our personalities match, to be sure, and a shared history is indescribably valuable. We were competitors at high school before bonding. Then we discovered many interests that we had in common. Our friendship developed itself quickly. We stayed companions and supported each other through law school and through our first jobs. Ours is a friendship for the ages. 2 There is something special about friends who know everything about you. They are rare. They have seen your bright lights of achievements, the depths of desperation and the boring routine of the in-between. It’s special to unpack feelings without wasting time filling in the blanks. As my long weekend shows, with such friends we don’t have to “do”, but we simply have to “be”.We drop the act, the performance, the public version of ourselves. The special friendships are those which never fail to delight us, whose continuation is worth the extra effort, despite distance and difference in our separate lives. I had the very great joy of this reminder last weekend. I’m lucky to have found this friend, and to see a future where her companionship remains. Being together is perfection. 3 1.What can we learn about the author and her best friend from paragraph 2?( ) A A.They talked constantly about their lives. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, your goal is to enlarge your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they’ll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle. However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time? It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you. In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend people who have fewer friends than they do, not more. The authors call this phenomenon (现象) the “friend-number paradox (悖论)”, which is also the title of their new paper. 9 Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on making friends with people who have lots of friends already. But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity (互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends. In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become diluted (削弱), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay them back. 10 1.What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph 1 mean?( ) C A.Look forward to. B.Hold on to. C.Have an impact on. D.Take control of. 11 2.What does the “friend-number paradox” show?( ) D A.The secrets to becoming popular. B.The ways of winning more friends. C.The advantages of having many friends. D.The problems with having many friends. 12 3.What does the author think of people with lots of friends?( ) B A.They don’t know about reciprocity. B.They may fail to perform their duties. C.They are more likely to be good friends. D.They have more valuable social resources. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends. 13 4.What would be the best title for the text?( ) B A.How Do People Choose Their Friends? B.More Friends Are Not Necessarily Better C.Why Do People Like Having More Friends? D.People With More Friends Are More Popular 潜力;可能性 4.go hand in hand 密切相关 构词法 mis- prefix 错的;坏的;错误地 misunderstanding n.误解;误会 刷阅读理解 15 [辽宁大连2024高一期末] As we walk the “path of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet periods of reflection can lead to personal improvement. However, social life is also important to us. More often than not, close friendships will help smooth out the sometimes rocky road that we are all meant to travel.1. . The first is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage.2. . And a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! With true friends, we feel free to share our joy and sadness in full measure. Indeed, the human heart depends on such opportunities for comfort and protection. 3. . We often find it easier to recognise other people’s weaknesses than our own. As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgements might be one-sided. On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions. Also, when we want to talk our problems over with a friend, we have to put our thoughts into words first. This alone helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough understanding of our problems. G C F 刷7选5 16 The last is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and skills.4. . By the way, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends.5. . The relationships should be carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the “path of life” with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends. A.Friends should be carefully chosen. B.Then comes the recognition from our friends. C.Happiness shared takes on a greater meaning. D.Therefore, we can be much happier and wiser. E.They can help us achieve what we want in our life.
