Halley’s Comet (哈雷彗星) appeared at the time of Mark Twain’s birth, making his arrival an even more special event. Twain said in 1909, “I came in with Halley’s Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.” Surprisingly enough, Mark Twain died the day after it passed by earth a second time.
Mark Twain was a gifted writer, speaker and humorist whose own characters shone through his work. As his writing grew in popularity, he became a public character in America. As the young country grew in size but not in a cultural manner to the liking of the European people, it became fashionable to criticize “the ugly American”. Twain travelled to Europe and made the Europeans friendly to America with his wisdom and humour.
Twain began his working life as a typesetter at a newspaper worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot, and then turned to gold mining. When he failed to strike it rich, he turned to journalism and it was during that time that he wrote the short story that started his writing life, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.
Although Twain’s life as a writer made him rich, his turn as a gentleman investor (投资者) did much to make him impoverished. He lost a great deal of money earned by writing on different investments. Twain recovered financially with the help of a man named Henry Huttleson Rogers. Further success from book sales improved his financial health.

A decade ago, Grenova founder Ali Safavi was an undergraduate student working in a life sciences lab. He was struck by the observation that each time a plastic pipette (吸管) was used, it’d be thrown in the trash. However, as Safavi realized, this practice is wasteful, both financially and environmentally. “We’d throw away all plastic after one use,” he says. “I saw we couldn’t carry on like this, especially as the industry continues to grow.”
Safavi figured there was a better way to address the issue. His goal was to invent a machine to wash pipettes so thoroughly that they’d be as good as new. In 2012, he completed a master’s degree at Duke University, and in 2013, he secured an initial investor for his project. Midway through 2014, he had his first prototype (原型机), and by 2015, the first machine was on the market. Safavi’s Richmond-based business was open, with a mission to reduce consumable plastic waste.
He has ten patents on his technology, including two machines marketed as the TipNovus and the TipLumis. “The invention doesn’t just help the environment but also cuts down costs for testing labs,” Safavi explains. “If you make the initial purchase, there’s a significant long-term cost reduction, because you needn’t keep buying new pipettes.”
Besides providing solutions for more types of plastic, Safavi says he feels good to create jobs, especially in the Richmond area. “I didn’t know much about Richmond until the investor contacted me, and she told me I had to come see it,” he says. “I fell in love with the city — a university in the middle of town, the river passing through, the historical districts, the culture and the people. It has the feel of a big city, without the costs or traffic you see elsewhere.”
8. What made Ali Safavi get the idea of launching his project?
A. The growth of the industry. B. The misuse of plastic pipettes.
C. His research into life sciences. D. His witnessing lab plastic waste.
9. What does the underlined word “address” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Solve. B. Stress. C. Explain. D. Predict.
10. What is Ali Safavi mainly talking about in paragraph 3?
A. The purposes of his project. B. His eco-friendly invention.
C. The significance of his invention. D. The development of the technology.
11. Which of the following is the benefit brought to Richmond by Safavi’s project?
A. More companies are built. B. More people are employed.
C. The environment is cleaner. D. The academic atmosphere is better.
D
Dead trees and art may be an unusual combination, but the pairing is part of a new exhibition in New York’s Madison Square Park designed to show the loss of forests around the world. The exhibition is called “Ghost Forest”, a term that refers to dead woodlands that were once full of life, according to Madison Square Park Conservancy. It’s the work of artist Maya Lin.
Lin said that when Madison Square Park Conservancy invited her to create a piece of artwork, she wanted to bring a ghost forest to Manhattan to raise awareness of the “huge loss that is going on that people might not realize”.
The 49 Atlantic white cedar trees used in the exhibition come from the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where they became victims of saltwater flooding.
Lin said she was inspired by her time in southwestern Colorado, where she spent her holidays, to create the piece. She said forests there are killed off by beetles because of the warm winters.
“One season you’ll see a little bit of rust (锈菌) on the tops of the trees. By next season, an entire forest can have died off.” She said the phenomenon is happening across the country and around the world. “In California, it’s forest fires. In the East Coast, it’s rising seas, saltwater flooding.”
Madison Square Park Conservancy and the Natural Areas Conservancy, an environmental protection organization in New York, will plant 1,000 trees throughout the city to deal with the carbon emissions. “I didn’t want to just wake you up to climate change. I think we don’t have much time left,” Lin said.
Lin said she thinks improving agricultural, and forestry practices, as well as protecting and restoring worsened land and wetlands, could reduce the effects of carbon emissions and protect plants and animals around the world. “Nature is resilient. If we give it a chance, it’ll come back.”
12. What is the purpose of Ghost Forest?
A. To draw attention to art. B. To show effects of climate change.
C. To stress the importance of forests. D. To attract more visitors to Manhattan.
13. What is Lin’s inspiration behind the exhibition?
A. An organization’s needs. B. Her regular observations.
C. Her husband’s suggestions. D. Her discoveries on a holiday.
14. Why does Lin mention California and the East Coast?
A. To analyse the climate change. B. To help find a practical solution.
C. To further describe the exhibition. D. To stress the urgent situation of forests.
15. Which can best explain the underlined word “resilient” in the last paragraph?
A. Easy to protect. B. Likely to survive.
C. Able to recover quickly. D. Comfortable to live in.

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Anna took her first baby-sitting job in Peter Smith’s and played games with Peter’s three children until the bedtime. Mr. Smith praised her for the great work. After Mrs. Smith had pressed the money into her hand, Anna didn’t even look at the money and then walked out of the house. She’d expected ten dollars. Now she saw that it was a one-hundred-dollar bill!
Anna imagined her parents’ faces when she handed them the one hundred dollars.
Things hadn’t been easy for Anna’s family since Anna’s dad had lost his engineering job a year ago. There had been no new clothes or movies in the last year. They no longer went out to eat on Fridays. Anna didn’t really mind, as long as her family was together. But now she could help. One hundred dollars! That was enough to fill the car with gas or to buy a bag of groceries.
Her excitement faded as she wondered if Mrs. Smith realized how much money she had given her. Could she have made a mistake? Anna felt bad as she remembered that Mrs. Smith had simply pulled the money from her purse without looking at it.
Anna thought, “Maybe Mrs. Smith meant to give me the one-hundred-dollar bill. Baby-sitting three children is a lot of work.” Soon Anna remembered that the Smiths didn’t seem to have much money, either. But, she silently argued with herself. “They gave me the money. I didn’t steal it.”
She found her parents in the living room. Anna took a deep breath and told them what had happened. “I wanted to give the money to you to help out the family, but I think Mrs. Smith made a mistake.” She continued. “I’m going to give it back to her.”
Dad settled his big hand on her shoulder. “You just gave us the best gift, Anna.” Mom kissed her. “We’re proud of you, sweetheart.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右:

Twain began his working life as a typesetter at a newspaper, worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot, and then turned to gold mining.

A. Solve. B. Stress. C. Explain. D. Predict.

C Her husband’s suggestions.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

【答案】Dear Jack,
I am planning to visit New Zealand this winter vacation. How excited I am! I would like to ask you for some information.
I wonder if you can recommend some places of interest. Your first-hand experience will be more convincing than the advertisements provided by travel agencies. Besides, I would appreciate it if you could give me some detailed information about my destination, such as local snacks, festivals or traditions. Last but not least, is there anything else I need to pay special attention to when I am there?
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)

【答案】One possible version:
The next morning, Anna went to Mrs. Smith’s house again. “I think you overpaid me last night,” she said and handed the one-hundred-dollar bill to her. Mrs. Smith looked surprised. “I didn’t know where that money had gone! I knew that I had put it in my purse. Then this morning, I couldn’t find it.” She started to cry. “It’s the last payment for something my husband needed. I made a mistake of giving you the one hundred dollars, but you are such an honest and kind girl that you did not keep it.”
Mrs. Smith opened her purse and counted out ten dollars. “I hope you’ll baby-sit for us again. Our children think you’re the best baby-sitter they’ve ever had, and so do I. I think they will be proud of having such a great sister to baby-sit them!” Anna said yes and went back home happily. When she gave her mother the ten dollars, the best gift for her, she felt very proud because she thought she did a great a job.
