When I first started working with Kevin Sargeant, he was a freshman in high school, and I was his science teacher. I knew even then that he was a bright young man with great potential, and a hunger for learning. But he struggled to apply what he had learned due to his autism (自闭症).
Diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症) in elementary school, Kevin scored well on tests. However, a huge part of school learning takes place not at a student’s individual desk, but in groups that require participation. For children like Kevin, that presents a big challenge.
For a long time, we struggled to persuade Kevin to come out of his shell and join the class. He preferred doing activities alone, and hated classroom tasks that required teamwork, like lab experiments. He struggled with public speaking even in small groups, and didn’t want to try new things.
You could tell that there was huge potential there — I never doubted his academic abilities. But at times many of us at the school worried about whether he’d ever be able to make full use of those abilities to build a future for himself. Over time, however, something changed. Slowly he began to want to try new things, and to work with people. He developed into a boy of humor, and started to participate in class and to let people get to know him. And he was gradually into the high school’s work-based learning program, where he learned about information technology — an area Kevin is always gifted in. In fact, in some ways, I think it was his experience with computers that brought him out of himself and helped him join the world. Finding something he was good at gave him the confidence he’d so badly needed.
4. What challenge did Kevin Sargeant have to face in school at first?
A. He had low intelligence.
B. He lacked the love for learning.
C. He wasn’t used to team work.
D. He couldn’t make friends with kids.
5. Which of the following words can best describe the changing Kevin?
A. Kind and open-minded.
B. Talented and responsible.
C. diligent and dependent.
D. Humorous and outgoing.
6. According to the author, what led to Kevin’s change?
A. His experience with computers.
B. His teacher’s encouragement.
C. The requirement of teachers.
D. The work-based learning program.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. A Lonely Talented Boy B. Out of the shell into the Sunshine
C. The Magic of Computers D. Strength from the Surrounding World
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

Meaningful conversations with children can be challenging for a parent. The book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish provides much advice on improving relationships with children.
Faber and Mazlish are known for their smart ways of helping parents and kids communicate better. The book has six chapters (章节), each about different skills that can help parents deal with common problems. The authors discuss many things parents face daily, from dealing with their kids’ bad feelings to setting strict but kind rules. One of the best things about the book is how much it stresses understanding and supporting kids’ feelings. The authors say a clear connection exists between how kids feel and how they act. Parents can create a safe environment where parents and kids can trust each other and work together by recognizing and understanding their feelings. This is different from the usual ways of dealing with problems involving (涉及) punishment and threats, which often make things worse instead of better.
The writing style is clear and simple, so people can quickly learn and implement the skills in their everyday lives. The tasks at the end of each chapter make it even more useful by encouraging readers to try the skills and learn them by heart.
Everyone who wants to improve their communication with kids should read this book. Its respectful and understanding methods strengthen relationships and improve parenting. It is a helpful tool for parents dealing with stubborn children or the emotional ups and downs of teenagers.
Following the ideas in this book, parents can make their homes more peaceful, where kids feel heard and understood. This contributes to raising confident, respectful, and mentally smart kids. Everyone who wants to learn how to communicate with children effectively must read this famous book.

Who gets to decide what is content worth posting? Content worth engaging?
On social media, it’s an algorithm (算法) — a computer program that matches your particular likes and follows with others who have similar likes and follows. But even more than that, it’s based on how much content you create. If you don’t feed the social media monster on a regular basis, it refuses to expose what you post for others to see.
Thus, some bloggers share heavily filtered (过滤) photos of tourist attractions on the social media and lifestyle platform to get traffic. However, this practice sometimes disappoints other users of Instagram who go to those locations after seeing the pictures.
Since the bloggers don’t clearly state that their pictures are works of photography, they are considered as travel guides. After the viewers visit those places in person, they find a big gap between reality and what they have seen online, leaving them feeling frustrated.
Last week, one famous app issued a statement on its social media account, admitting that some users have “over-beautified” their online travel diaries.
The apology came after users complained on social media about their experience following travel guides on the app, only to find out on actual visits that the places are poles apart from the skilfully retouched images they saw. One of the most well-known cases involved the “pink beach” of Fuxian Lake in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, which often appears online in dreamy pink images, but in reality is more similar to the colour of red bricks.
“If it’s OK to photoshop promotion pictures for tourist sites like this, I can turn the bushes downstairs in my neighbourhood into a Norwegian forest in any minute,” one of the most upvoted (置顶) comments on the app said. Others argued that the problem lies with the bloggers rather than the platform.
12. Why do some bloggers post heavily filtered photos?
A. To show their creativity.
B. To get more online approval.
C. To advertise tourist attractions.
D. To promote the popularity of apps.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to heavily filtered photos?
A. Envious. B. Critical.
C. Supportive. D. Frustrated.
14. How can bushes downstairs in the neighbourhood be turned into a Norwegian forest?
A. By shooting the forest on actual visits.
B. By feeding the monster on social media.
C. By finding a gap between reality and net.
D. By skilfully beautifying the photo of bushes.
15. Who should take responsibility for posted content according to the text?
A. App users who are easily cheated.
B. Unreliable bloggers and travel guides.
C. The social media and lifestyle platform.
D. Different netizens have different views.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. D
【解析】

【13题详解】

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In today’s digital age, screens are everywhere. From online classes to social media and video games, technology is deeply woven into the daily lives of high school students. While digital devices offer endless convenience and entertainment, spending too much time on them can negatively affect your sleep, mood, and academic performance. ____16____.
● Track your current habits.
Before making changes, you need to know exactly where your time goes. Most smartphones have built-in screen time trackers that show how many hours you spend on specific apps. You might be shocked to discover that you spend three hours a day scrolling through short videos. ____17____. Once you identify the apps that consume most of your time, you can start making conscious decisions to reduce them.
● ____18____
Not all screen time is created equal. Spending two hours researching for a history project is obviously more productive than spending two hours aimlessly browsing social media. When setting your screen time goals, differentiate between necessary and recreational use. You don’t have to cut out technology completely. Instead, aim to limit passive consumption while keeping the active, purposeful use that supports your learning and growth.
● Create tech-free zones.
Another effective way to manage screen time is to establish physical boundaries in your home. Designate certain areas, such as the dining table or your bed, as tech-free zones. When you eat without a phone, you can actually taste your food and connect with your family. Similarly, keeping devices out of the bedroom helps your brain associate the bed with sleep rather than stimulation. ____19____, making it much easier to fall asleep at night.
● Replace screen time with offline activities.
If you simply try to stop using your phone, you will likely feel bored and quickly return to your old habits. The key is to fill the void with engaging real-world activities. Pick up a book that you’ve been meaning to read, go outside for a walk, or spend time practicing a musical instrument. ____20____. By gradually substituting digital entertainment with physical and social activities, you will find that you rely less on screens to pass the time.
A. Focus on quality over quantity.
B. This realization is the first step toward change
C. They will not only enrich your life but also reduce your urge to check your phone
D. However, breaking free from the screen doesn’t mean you have to abandon your phone entirely
E. These boundaries send a clear signal to your brain to wind down
F. Therefore, it is essential to develop healthier screen habits
G. Set reasonable goals for yourself
【答案】16. F 17. B 18. A 19. E 20. C
【解析】
【导语】本文主要向高中生提供了减少屏幕使用时间、培养更健康数字习惯的实用建议。
【16题详解】
前文“While digital devices offer endless convenience and entertainment, spending too much time on them can negatively affect your sleep, mood, and academic performance.(虽然数字设备提供了无尽的便利和娱乐,但长时间使用它们会对你的睡眠、情绪和学业表现产生负面影响。)”
前文“You might be shocked to discover that you spend three hours a day scrolling through short videos.(你可能会惊讶地发现,你每天会花三个小时浏览短视频。)”
空格处是本段小标题,由空后“When setting your screen time goals, differentiate between necessary and recreational use. You don’t have to cut out technology completely. Instead, aim to limit passive consumption while keeping the active, purposeful use that supports your learning and growth.(在设定屏幕使用时间目标时,要区分必要使用和娱乐性使用。你不必完全摒弃科技产品。相反,应努力限制被动消费,同时保持积极、有目的的使用,以支持你的学习和成长。)”可知,本段核心内容是区分必要用屏和娱乐用屏、不彻底戒掉电子产品、合理规划用时,A选项“Focus on quality over quantity.(注重质量而非数量。)”说明在定目标的时候要重质量而非数量,也就是要区分用屏的目的,概括了本段内容,可作为小标题。
【19题详解】
前文“Another effective way to manage screen time is to establish physical boundaries in your home. Designate certain areas, such as the dining table or your bed, as tech-free zones.(另一种有效管理屏幕时间的方法是在家中设立物理界限。指定某些区域,比如餐桌或床,为无科技区域。)”和“Similarly, keeping devices out of the bedroom helps your brain associate the bed with sleep rather than stimulation.(同样,将设备留在卧室之外有助于你的大脑将床与睡眠联系起来,而不是与刺激活动联系在一起。)”提到在家划定无电子区域,远离卧室电子产品,E选项“These boundaries send a clear signal to your brain to wind down(这些界限向你的大脑发送了一个明确的信号,让你放松下来)”中These boundaries指代上文划定的物理无屏幕界限,承接上文,说明该做法能让大脑放松,衔接后文“making it much easier to fall asleep at night(这样就能更容易地在晚上入睡)”更容易入睡。
【20题详解】
前文“Pick up a book that you’ve been meaning to read, go outside for a walk, or spend time practicing a musical instrument.(拿起一本你一直想读的书,出去散散步,或者花些时间练习一种乐器。)”列举读书、散步、练乐器等线下活动,C选项“They will not only enrich your life but also reduce your urge to check your phone(它们不仅会丰富你的生活,还会减少你查看手机的冲动)”中的They指代这些现实活动,说明线下活动的两大好处,完美总结本段主旨,收尾自然。

Strength from the Surrounding World
C
8. What is Faber and Mazlish’s book mainly about?
A. Practical suggestions on better parenting. B. Creative strategies for removing bad habits.
C. Ways for children to become more independent. D. Communication skills for clear self-expression.
9. What does the underlined word “implement” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Record. B. Compare. C. Recognize. D. Apply.
10. What can parents expect to get by following the ideas in the book?
A. More open-minded kids. B. A peaceful family environment.
C. A chance to meet like-minded parents. D. Better management over their emotions.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a book. B. To voice a common fear.
C. To present an interesting finding. D. To offer suggestions on removing stress.
D
