It is essential to shed light on the women of science, as their struggles and breakthroughs continue to inspire generations of scientists. Ada Lovelace Ada Lovelace, the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, is often regarded as the world’s first computer programmer. Her ground-breaking insights and analytical skills led her to write the first algorithm, imagining the potential of the machine to do more than just calculations. Lovelace’s vision made her well-known as a pioneer in the field. Rosalind Franklin Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray crystallography images played a vital role in understanding the structure of DNA. Her data, acquired through research, was used by James Watson and Francis Crick without her permission or acknowledgment. Franklin’s invaluable contributions to genetics and biology deserve recognition as they provided the key insights into the building blocks of life, yet her name is often overshadowed by her male colleagues. Lise Meitner Lise Meitner made ground-breaking discoveries in nuclear science. Meitner’s contributions to this field are celebrated today, as she paved the way for significant advancements in energy production and scientific understanding. Lise Meitner certainly deserves the place she has earned in the history of science. Mary Anning Mary Anning made remarkable discoveries during the early 19th century and won the respect of the scientists of her time. Anning unearthed the first complete bones of an ichthyosaur (鱼龙). Her pioneering work laid the foundation for the study of prehistoric life and helped shape our understanding of Earth’s history. 1. Who might be a physicist? A. Ada Lovelace. B. Rosalind Franklin. C. Lise Meitner. D. Mary Anning. 2. What made Ada Lovelace famous? A. Her hard work. B. Her great foresight. C. Her competitive spirit. D. Her high intelligence. 3. What do we know about Rosalind Franklin? A. She set up genetics. B. She is underestimated. C. She invented the X-ray crystallography. D. She helped her colleagues to acquire data. B Li Dan works as a teacher at East China Jiaotong University in Jiangxi Province. During her spare time, she recreates ancient Chinese delicacies that have been all but lost to history. Li began working on the project in August 2020, and so far the many traditional dishes she has created include more than 60 from Dream of the Red Mansions, one of China’s four greatest classic novels. To recreate the dishes, she has had to refer to books on traditional recipes, agriculture and even traditional Chinese medicine to learn and adopt traditional techniques. “I’ve liked the novel since I was a kid because I was always impressed by the food described in it. Its illustration of the dishes vividly shows the elegance of life in that era, so I have been trying to revive them,” said Li. “I make these delicacies in the hope that more people will read the novel.” Li says that one of the biggest challenges is recreating dishes that require highly seasonal ingredients. If all of her trial dishes fail during the short season, she needs to wait one year to try again. The most difficult dishes she has ever attempted are chicken skin soup with pickled bamboo shoots, and dried eggplant. It took her more than two weeks to finish each of the dishes. “Clothing and buildings can all be well looked after, whereas food can seldom be conserved in museums. For food, modern people have only ancient accounts to refer to,” she said. Food is one of many highlights in traditional Chinese culture. As Chinese culture is increasingly accepted by the younger generations, many online influencers like Li also have posted videos of themselves recreating ancient Chinese food. Professional chefs have also been bringing cuisines recorded in ancient books back to life, carrying forward traditional techniques. Through their efforts, the culture and folk customs behind the plate are also being brought back. 4. Why did Li recreate the dishes from Dream of the Red Mansions? A. To gain more followers online. B. To attract more people to the book. C. To carry forward traditional techniques. D. To make the dish-making process simple. 5. What brings Li challenges when she recreates traditional dishes? A. Her lack of experience in cooking. B. Her busy teaching job at university. C. The high costs of some ingredients. D. The short supply time of some ingredients. 6. What do we know about the dishes recreated by Li? A. They can be kept in museums. B. There are videos about them online. C. Professional chefs speak highly of them. D. They are from China’s four classic novels. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. New life of traditional Chinese dishes B. A hobby turned into a second career C. Media influence on traditional Chinese culture D. Traditional Chinese food shines on the world stage C “The news is ... there is no news.” With those words, outside St Mary’s Hospital in London awaiting the birth of Prince George in July 2013, my reporting for the BBC went viral on the Internet. Not for what I was saying but the way I was saying it. The helpless look. The depressed tone. Viewers could relate to me. Because they are human. And so am I. Fedha is not human. Yes, the fair-haired woman looks human. This week she was introduced as the first presenter in Kuwait who works by artificial intelligence. “What kind of news do you prefer? Let's hear your opinions,” she says in Arabic. AI newsreaders actually never make a cock-up of their jobs. They can skip the mispronunciations, the complaints over foundation colours in makeup, and even the stresses over too-weak hairspray. To examine the problems that may come with an AI newsreader, I thought I would turn the tables and ask Genie — the chatbot powered by ChatGPT. “They may struggle with delivering the news in a way that is appealing to viewers,” Genie says. I get that. As far as delivering the news is concerned, the face and voice behind it matters. My ChatGPT friend also tells me that there are concerns about the potential for AI newsreaders to be used to spread false information, as they may not be able to determine the correctness of a story’s source. Not just in the delivery of news, but in its content. AI is already involved in the spread of “untrue news” — and that will only get worse. At a time when trust in news providers is reducing, the next few years threaten to be very challenging if that trust is to be regained. One of the main concerns about AI newsreaders is that they lack the human touch and emotion. I have delivered some of the biggest stories. Whether it be an air attack or the death of a major figure, it's not just the words that matter. You need to look and sound right. An AI newsreader cannot convey (传达) a reaction to a breaking story. 8. How did viewers react according to paragraph 1? A. They found the reporting confusing. B. They felt excited about the reporting. C. They considered the author unprofessional. D. They knew the author’s thoughts and feelings. 9. What does the underlined part “make a cock-up of” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Talk about. B. Make a fool of. C. Keep an eye on. D. Mess up. 10. What does Genie think of AI newsreaders? A. They may deliver misleading news. B. They can locate the source of a news story. C. They interact with viewers in an improper way. D. They wear the same facial expressions as humans. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To voice his doubt about AI newsreaders. B. To share his experience of being a reporter. C. To introduce an AI newsreader called Fedha. D. To show ChatGPT's impact on news reporting. D It is thought that music can benefit kids’ growth. Techniques for integrating (融入) music into math lessons range from clapping to pieces with different rhythms when learning numbers and fractions, to using math to design music al instruments. Previous research has shown that children who are better at music also do better at math. But whether teaching music to youngsters actually improves their math test scores has been less clear. To find out more, Turkish researcher Dr Ayea Akin, carried out a study. She first reviewed the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78,000young people from kindergarteners to university students. Then she classified the types of musical intervention in education: standardized music interventions (typical music lessons, in which children sing and listen to, and compose music), instrumental musical interventions (lessons in which children learn how to play instruments, either individually or as part of a band) and music-math integrated interventions, in which music is integrated into math lessons. Finally, she compared students’ math test results before and after taking part in the interventions. The result shows that the use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of math classes, was connected with greater improvement in math over time. To be more specific, both subjects require abstract (抽象的) thought and quantitative reasoning. For example, geometry and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry (对称). Arithmetic may lend itself particularly well to being taught through music because central concepts, such as fractions and ratios (比例), are also important to music. Integrated lessons are especially effective because they are more enjoyable than traditional math lessons and students can feel less nervous about math. Dr Taylor Francis, an expert in education, said, “The study can give teachers a real insight into both math and music education. However, the study can be more thorough. It should include more factors such as students’ gender (性别), socio-economic status and the length of musical instruction in the study.” 12. What may be the topic of Dr Ayca Akin’s study? A. How music can be integrated into math education. B. How math influences the design of musical instruments. C. How music education can benefit children at an early stage. D. How music influences students' academic performance in math. 13. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A. The forms of major music lessons. B. The significance of music lessons. C. The process of Dr Ayca Akin’s study. D. The differences of musical interventions. 14. Why are integrated lessons especially effective? A. They can ease students’ anxiety about math. B. They can teach integrating math to students. C. They can make abstract ideas easy to understand. D. They can make students connect music to geometry. 15. What is Dr Taylor Francis’ attitude towards the study? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unclear. 第二节 七选五 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ethics (道德规范) are concerned with people's moral actions. How she hoped her parents would give her a pair! In vain (徒劳) her mother explained that Brenda might not learn to use them as easily as other children, and that she might fall many times and perhaps hurt herself before she could skate properly. Brenda wanted skates and that was that. She thought about skates all day and dreamed about skates all night. She pictured herself skating to school and home, skating to the stores for Mother, and skating all over the yard. Her birthday came at last, and with it the precious package which she had been eager for. Before she opened it, she guessed there were skates inside. And there were — beautiful new shiny skates. Just her size, too. Brenda was on cloud nine. She felt she had never been so happy in all her life. And now it was time to practice with them. Hardly was breakfast over when she was out on the smooth concrete(水泥地).“At last,”she thought,“I am going to skate! Hooray!” Excitedly she put on her precious pairs of skates and eagerly she stood up. But only for a moment. Suddenly, to her great surprise, away went both her feet from under her. Down she went. Brenda stood up again. But hardly had she put one foot forward, when the other started running backward, and down she went again. This really hurt, and Brenda felt very much like crying. Slowly she got up once more despite the pain and started to walk with great care. But before she knew what was going on, she was sitting on the concrete again. She felt very sad, tears filling her eyes. All her hopes of skating to school and town like the other girls disappeared. She began to wish she had never asked for skates for her birthday. She cried, taking off the skates from her feet and throwing them inside the back door. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; Mother saw all this and asked Brenda what was wrong __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Slowly Brenda put on the skates, got up and tried again. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 期末教学质量调研 高一年级英语试题 2024.06 注意: 本试卷分四个部分, 答案全部做在答题纸上。 1. Firstly, set a fixed time and duration for using social media every day, so that you can focus more on learning and other more important things. Secondly, before receiving and sharing information, it is important to ensure its accuracy, because the information seen on social media may not always be accurate and authentic. Thirdly, carefully choose the content you want to publish and avoid the leakage of personal identity information. Do not casually add strangers as friends. Finally, others’ perspectives should be accepted with an open mindset. Their privacy should also be protected. Do not post their photos and information without permission. These are my suggestions. I hope them will be helpful to you. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节 读后续写 (满分25分) 【52题答案】 【答案】Mother saw all this and asked Brenda what was wrong. “I just can't do it,” Brenda sobbed, “I'm just no good at skating.” Hearing what her daughter said, Mother sat down beside her and said genteelly, “You know, Brenda, everyone falls when they first start to skate.
