In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words. Later on Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular schools couldn’t take care of a student with special needs. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they want to prove that, given the opportunity,he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school. The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06, being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants. Sometimes, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or an ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job. Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). The expression comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster(怪物) is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants. For example, a young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if you get a pay rise and he does not. In most places in the world, a green light means to move ahead. In everyday speech, a green light means agree to continue with a project. 8. A greenhorn now refers to ________. A. a person who is new in a job B. a new soldier C. a young horse D. a cow without horns 9. A person with a green thumb is a person ________. A. who is good at growing plants B. whose thumbs are of green color C. whose garden is greener than others’ D. who is younger than his neighbors 10. A man may meet the green-eyed monster if ________. A. he sees a dangerous animal B. he reads a sad play C. his friend gets a prize that he wants D. he can’t get something 11. The main idea of the passage is ________. A. a greenhorn B. a green thumb C. the Green Revolution D. the word “green” and its story 【答案】8. A 9. A 10. C 11. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job. 故选A。 A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well.可知,“A person with a green thumb”是指一个能让植物长得很好的人,也就是擅长园艺的人。故选A。 It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants. For example, a young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if you get a pay rise and he does not. D Four months ago, OpenAI, a small San Francisco company, became the talk of the technology industry when it introduced a new online chatbot that could answer complex questions, write poetry and copy human emotions. Now the company is back with a new version (型号) of the technology, called GPT-4. GPT-4 which learns its skills by analyzing large data from the Internet, improves on what powered the original ChatGPT in several ways. It can immediately know someone’s tax duties and provide detailed descriptions of images. However, though the new technology can do better on tests and offer precise medical advice to doctors, it can mess up basic arithmetic (算术). On Tuesday, OpenAI started selling access to GPT-4 so that businesses and other software developers could build their own applications on top of it. A few companies are already working with GPT-4. Morgan Stanley Wealth Management is building a system that’ll immediately retrieve (检索) information from company documents, and serve it up to financial advisers in the form of conversations. OpenAI got the new technology enhanced. As people tested ChatGPT, they rated the chatbot’s responses, separating those that were useful and truthful from those that weren’t. Then, using an advanced skill, the system spent months analyzing those ratings and gaining a better understanding of what it should and shouldn’t do. Given a long article and asked to summarize it, GPT-4 will give a precise summary nearly every time. Moreover, given a photograph, chart or diagram, the technology can provide a detailed, paragraphs-long description of the image and answer questions about its contents. OpenAI leaders said the company wasn’t immediately releasing the image description part of the technology because they were unsure how it could be applied for improper purposes. However, “We can take all these general-purpose knowledge skills and spread them across all sorts of different areas,” said Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president. “This takes the technology into a whole new field.” 12. What does GPT-4 need to make improvements in according to the text? A. Its describing skill. B. Its arithmetic ability. C. Its copying capability. D. Its summary function. 13. Why is Morgan Stanley Wealth Management mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To give an example. B. To present a belief. C. To explain an idea. D. To make a conclusion. 14. What does the underlined word “enhanced” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Replaced. B. Appreciated. C. Improved. D. Developed. 15. What was OpenAI’s worry about GPT-4? A. It may not understand what to do. B. Its technology could go into a new field. C. It may not sell well as expected. D. Its image description could be misused. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段内容“However, though the new technology can do better on tests and offer precise medical advice to doctors, it can mess up basic arithmetic.(然而,尽管新技术可以在测试中做得更好,并为医生提供精确的医疗建议,但它可能会在基本的算术方面出错。)” 根据语境分析可知,Morgan Stanley所在句“Morgan Stanley Wealth Management is building a system that’ll immediately retrieve information from company documents, and serve it up to financial advisers in the form of conversations.(摩根士丹利财富管理公司(Morgan Stanley Wealth Management)正在开发一个系统,可以立即从公司文件中检索信息,并以对话的形式提供给财务顾问。)” 故选A项。 分析前后文语境可知,画线单词所在句为该段的中心主旨句,根据后文的阐述“As people tested ChatGPT, they rated the chatbot’s responses, separating those that were useful and truthful from those that weren’t. Then, using an advanced skill, the system spent months analyzing those ratings and gaining a better understanding of what it should and shouldn’t do.(当人们测试ChatGPT时,他们对聊天机器人的反应进行评分,将有用和真实的反应与没有用的反应区分开来。然后,使用先进的技术,该系统花了数月时间分析这些评分,并更好地了解它应该做什么和不应该做什么。)”可知,后文具体讲述了通过先进技术分析“反应评分”,聊天机器人进一步提升了自己的“是非认知”的过程。即,该段强调了其进步。由此可推知,“enhanced”应是“提升,进步”含义。故选C项。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章末尾段内容“OpenAI leaders said the company wasn’t immediately releasing the image description part of the technology because they were unsure how it could be applied for improper purposes.(OpenAI领导人表示,该公司没有立即发布该技术的图像描述部分,因为他们不确定该技术如何用于不当目的。)” For some people, the warmest memories from childhood come from being read a great story. ___16___ It develops children’s language skills and increases their ability to succeed in school and, later, work. Experts say parents should read books that are not too long and on the right age level so that children will not lose interest. They say parents should also point to and talk about pictures in books for infants (幼儿). ___17___ Elizabeth Lyttleton has three daughters. They are at age ten, eight and two. ___18___ She says, "I watch my two-year-old, who is now getting a big language explosion. So much of it comes from the books that she reads. With my eight-year-old, it’s now the broadening horizons (眼界). The oldest now truly reads for pleasure and can get lost in young adult books. " ___19___ The company Scholastic is a major publisher of children’s books. Every two years, Scholastic publishes a report on American reading attitudes and habits. The 2015 report says only 31 percent of children in the U. S. read a book for fun almost every day. Four years ago that number was more than double. Scholastic also suggests some ways to develop a love of reading in a child. ___20___ Another way to develop a reading habit in children is to read to them. The Scholastic report also suggests permitting children to choose their own books. However, researchers find that the number of children who read for fun is dropping fast. E 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 根据本空后的“It develops children's language skills and increases their ability to succeed in school and, later, work.” Whether it is a relaxing walk or a power one, taking a walk usually only lasts a small period of time. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days, and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!” It was the voice of her father, a seaman who seldom returned home due to his duties, earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared. Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere (氛围). At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their parents. “Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane asked, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late morning. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.” Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment (尴尬). How could she have forgotten such an important day! While chatting with her father, Jane’s eyes wandered around the room, and she saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days, since her mother had been too busy with work to deal with such housework. Looking at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone. Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from the sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy cleaning the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what tiring work his Mum had at home! One hour later, the cleaning work was finally finished. They even prepared a simple breakfast for Mum. With everything ready for the big moment, they knocked at their mother’s bedroom door excitedly. “Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she was moved to tears and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said proudly. Around 11 a.m., another surprise — the cake that Dad had ordered — arrived as well. Mum took out her smartphone, took a picture of the three of them eating the cake happily, and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday for her! 词汇激活 行为类 ①收集:collect/gather ②洗衣服:do the laundry/do the washing/wash the clothes ③完成:finish/complete 情绪类 ①感动:be moved to tears/feel a warm current in the heart/be deeply touched ②开心地:happily/delightedly 【点睛】[高分句型1]Meanwhile, Tom was busy cleaning the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what tiring work his Mum had at home!(运用由连接词what引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2]When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart.(运用when引导的时间状语从句和what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 防城港市2024年春季学期高一教学质量检测 英语 注意事项: 1. 1.Who do you think are the speakers? B Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early, when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. Later on, Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. C Green is an important color in nature. A. a person who is new in a job B a new soldier C. a young horse D a cow without horns 9. A. a greenhorn B. a green thumb C. the Green Revolution D. the word “green” and its story D Four months ago, OpenAI, a small San Francisco company, became the talk of the technology industry when it introduced a new online chatbot that could answer complex questions, write poetry and copy human emotions. Now the company is back with a new version (型号) of the technology, called GPT-4. GPT-4, which learns its skills by analyzing large data from the Internet, improves on what powered the original ChatGPT in several ways. For some people, the warmest memories from childhood come from being read a great story. ___16___ It develops children’s language skills and increases their ability to succeed in school and, later, work. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
