As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered, with estimates suggesting that there are between 2.2 million and 3.8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet to be identified. However, professionals in the field are not alone in their efforts to uncover new species. An enthusiastic community of amateurs has emerged, bridging the gap between professionals and non-professionals. These amateurs have even made significant discoveries. One such amateur is Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom enthusiast and professional photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, Taylor Lockwood developed a fascination with mushrooms. “Outside my cottage were these amazing mushrooms,” he says. “And it was as if these mushrooms looked at me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world how pretty we are.’” Lockwood answered their call and purchased camera equipment to capture their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so intense that he would even dig holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect angle for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom that looked like tiny fingers wearing off-white gloves. Upon deeper investigation, fungi researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a “hazel glove” mushroom, which is a rare find. “Mushrooms are not like plants,” Rossman says. “They don’t come up at the same time every year, and so sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits.” Rossman says that’s why it’s so valuable to have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren’t sufficient, so he chose to create time-lapse (延时拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. “When I do time-lapse, I see so much life happening around the mushrooms—insects, worms and other small creatures interacting with them,” he says. Lockwood’s love for art is evident in his approach to filming mushrooms over time. Although he appreciates the scientific aspect of his work, he identifies himself as an artist at heart.
4. What can we learn about mushroom amateurs from paragraph 1?
A. They keep close track of the growth of fungi.
B. They help identify new species of mushroom.

A. Skilled and observant.
B. Focused and flexible.
C. Talented and optimistic.
D. Organized and responsible.
7. Why did Lockwood decide to make time-lapse videos of mushrooms?
A. To improve his photography techniques.
B. To capture dynamic life in an artistic way.
C. To collect biological data for deeper research.
D. To use a new approach to scientific studies.

Clean water might not grow on trees, but the trees might do the next best thing — provide a cheap and easy way of filtering (过滤) it.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been able to use wood from tree branches to filter water both in the laboratory and in the field. Compared to other water filters, the new way of filtering water gets an edge. This could provide an inexpensive and low-tech alternative to costly methods of getting clean water in places that need it the most.
In a new study, researchers show that the natural structure of wood from non-flowering plants like pine provides enough filtration to remove bacteria from water. This method was already proven to work in a lab in 2014, but now the researchers have found, through interviews with potential users and tests of local water sources, that the tree-based purification system works just as well in the field in India and that the locals are willing to use it.
The branches of non-flowering plants are built of thin, straw-like tubes called x ylem in the layer of wood under the skin. The unique structure of the xylem tissue in the branches allows it to work as a water filter because these channels are connected to each other through porous membranes (多孔薄膜). These membranes can catch water pollutants, similar to a water filter membrane.
The researchers were even able to extend the shelf life of dry wood filters to around two years by dipping (浸泡) them in a protective mix of hot water and ethanol (乙醇). To make this potentially life-saving technology be reachable to those who need it, the construction of the filter is open to the public and instructions can be found on their website detailing how anyone can try to construct their own wood water filter.
8. What does the underlined “gets an edge” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Has a limitation. B. Has an advantage.
C Faces a challenge. D. Produces an effect.
9. Why does the author mention the example in India?
A. To call on people to protect local water sources.
B. To show the consequences of lacking pure water.
C. To explain why water filters are in great demand.
D. To prove the water filter is effective and welcomed.
10. What makes the branches of non-flowering plants act as a water filter?
A. They are thinner than other plants' branches.
B. They have wide straw-like tubes in the xylem tissue.
C. The tiny holes of membranes can trap water pollutants.
D. The layer of wood under their skin carries plenty of water.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A unique way of obtaining water from plants.
B. The working principle of tree-based water filters.
C. MIT creates a high-tech water purification system.
D. MIT's wooden water filter comes into practical use.
D
Empathy (共情) is one of the most important skills a teacher can have, but it is not always easy to respond to student behaviour with empathy. However, when you demonstrate to students that you understand and respect their feelings, you build mutual trust and friendly relationship.
According to new research, teaching children in a way that encourages them to empathize with others improves their creativity and may lead to a variety of other beneficial learning outcomes. The findings are the result of a year-long University of Cambridge study with year 9 Design and Technology (D &T) students (ages 13 to 14) from two inner London schools. Pupils at one school spent the year following curriculum-required lessons, while students at the other school used a set of engineering design thinking tools to improve students’ ability to think creatively and empathically while solving real-world problems.
Both sets of pupils were assessed for creativity at both the start and end of the school year using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking: a well-established psychometric test (心理测试). The results showed a statistically significant increase in creativity among pupils at the intervention school, where the thinking tools were used. At the start of the year, the Creativity scores of pupils in the control school, which followed the standard curriculum, were 11% higher than those at the intervention school. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: Creativity scores among the intervention group were 78% higher than the control group.
Nicholl, Senior Lecturer in Design and Technology Education, who trains teachers studying on the University’s D & T PGCE course, said, “Teaching for empathy has been difficult despite being part of the D &. T National Curriculum for over two decades. This evidence suggests that it is a missing link in the creative process, and vital if we want education to encourage the designers and engineers of tomorrow.” Nicholl added, “When I taught Design and Technology, I didn’t see children as potential engineers who would one day contribute to the economy; they were people who needed to be ready to go into the world at 18. Teaching children to empathize is about building a society where we appreciate each other’s thoughts. Surely that is something we want education to do.”
12. What will a teacher with empathy do?
A. Share knowledge with students.
B. Understand students’ emotions.
C. Improve important teaching skills.
D. Respond to students’ behaviour.
13. Why were thinking tools used by the pupils of the other school?
A. To spread the ideas related to empathy.
B To learn the curriculum-required lessons.
C. To promote problem-solving abilities.
D. To inspire creativity with mutual trust.
14. What did the results of the test suggest?
A. The standard curriculum didn’t encourage creativity.
B. The intervention school was more popular among students.
C. The control group lacked the ability to empathize with others.
D. The empathetic class contributed significantly to creativity.
15. What did Nichol l think of the study?
A. Unarguable. B. Influential. C. Distinctive. D. Inaccurate.

Unique among all the positive emotions, hope requires some degree of conflict, difficulty, negativity, or uncertainty to be ignited. People high in hope are optimistic about their future and believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as obstacles. ____16____ Here are tips on how to cultivate hope.
Set and achieve goals. Without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. Hopeful people usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success. ____17____Getting three emails out in the next 15minutes or preparing lunch in the next 20 minutes are simple examples.
Stick with positive people. ____18____ This doesn’t mean being intolerant of another person’s difficulties, negativity, or struggles, but it does mean that hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright and proactive attitude. They maintain a healthy balance but don’t get overwhelmed by the negativity around them.
____19____ While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. This is a unique combination because this type of confidence allows a person to be imperfect. In addition, they are willing to take reasonable risks and accept failures to support their growth and move forward.
Keep a positive outlook. No matter what life throws at them, they endeavor to see the silver lining. They don’t let the circumstance define their emotional response. In addition, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. ____20____
A. Believe in the power of risks.
B. Be self-reflective and confident.
C. This is key to the success of many high-hope people.

My four-year-old son Jack had a vast collection of toy cars, his prized possessions. One day, I jokingly suggested, “Jack, how about giving away some of your toy cars to the children who don’t have any?” “No, these are mine,” he said angrily, holding on to his toy cars tightly. At that moment, I knew he didn’t grasp the importance of sharing. Therefore, I decided it was time for me to teach him a valuable lesson.
The next day, I planned a special day out with him with the aim of gently getting him to open his heart. Our special day began with a visit to the local park, a place where Jack always feels pleased. We found a tree coming into flower, bathed in the warm sunlight. Nearby, a group of children were playing together. “Look, Jack,” I pointed out. “See how they’re sharing their toys? Notice the smiles on their faces?” Those children attracted Jack’s attention. He watched carefully as one child passed a bright red toy truck to another, and he noticed how their faces lit up in a shared moment of happiness. It made him feel curious. I continued, “Sharing doesn’t just make others happy, it can make you feel good too.” Jack kept silent with his expression becoming thoughtful and a bit doubtful.
On the way home, we stopped by a small community center which was hosting a charity event. Volunteers, cheerful and warm, were collecting toys for the poor children. Tables in front of them were decorated with various kinds of toys. Jack observed some children of his age eagerly contributing toys, their faces shining with pride and happiness. “See, Jack,” I whispered. “A small act of kindness can bring great joy to you and others.” Jack made no reply but from his hesitant look I could see he was struggling with an internal conflict.

C. They replace professional scientists in the field.
D. They classify the majority of mushroom species.
5. What inspired Lockwood to photograph mushrooms?
A. His desire for knowledge.
B. His curiosity about nature.
C. The beauty of nearby mushrooms.
D. The appeal of outdoor photography.
6. Which of the following best describes Lockwood according to paragraph 3?
A. Skilled and observant.

C. Faces a challenge.

B. To learn the curriculum-required lessons.
D. Inaccurate.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. B

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: Moved by the little girl, Jack urged me to take him home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As we were about to leave, a little girl arrived. Jack’s gaze was fixed on the girl who was no older than him. She walked into the community center with a firm step, her hands holding a well-worn teddy bear tightly. Handing the volunteer her teddy bear, she said, “This is my only toy, but I want to give it away to pass on my best wishes to others.” Jack’s eyes widened as he absorbed the simple yet powerful message. Then his hesitant expression was replaced by a determined look.
Moved by the little girl, Jack urged me to take him home. Upon arriving home, he rushed into his bedroom and care fully sorted through his toy cars. “Dad, I want to give these to other kids,” he said earnestly, showing me a fistful of his favorites. We packed them together and headed back to the community center. As we arrived, Jack eagerly handed his cars over to the volunteers, his eyes full of the joy of sharing. Seeing his transformation filled my heart with huge pride. It was a meaningful day for both of us.
