If you’re looking to dance your way through the year, we have you covered — whether
you’re into pop, country, EDM or folk. Here are the best music festivals across America in 2024.
Pitchfork Music Festival | Chicago, IL
When: July 19-21, 2024
Where: Chicago, Illinois
Pitchfork brings a carefully organized lineup (阵容 ) of highly praised hip-hop artists and
forward-thinking musicians to Chicago’s Union Park each summer. Since its founding in 2006,
the festival has remained an ideal size, featuring reasonable crowds (about 20,000 people per day),
three stages and plenty of room for resting in the sun or shade.
Lollapalooza | Chicago, IL
When: TBA
Where: Chicago, Illinois
Founded as a touring festival by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell in 1991, Lollapalooza has
made Chicago its permanent home since 2005. The big event spans the entire Grant Park,
subjecting more than 100,000 daily attendees to long walks between stages. All kinds of

When: TBA
Where: Columbus, Ohio
It was founded in 2019 as a means to promote and raise funds for mental health initiatives at
the Ohio State UniversityWexner Medical Center. A share of the income from Wonderbus continues
to help support the medical center’s programs. While the 2024 lineup is not yet confirmed,

Does your company employ people from a diverse range of backgrounds? How can you adapt
your policies to adapt to cultural diversity in the workplace?
In their book No Rules Rules, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and author Erin Meyer discuss the
challenges Netflix faced when it started to grow internationally. Hastings learned two major lessons
about working with people from different cultures and now Netflix successfully operates in over
190 countries.
By 2011, Netflix had built a culture of autonomy and accountability (责任) that enabled the
company to produce great results in America. Hastings began expanding the company into other
countries. By 2016, Netflix was in more than 130 countries worldwide.
Still, Hastings knew from his past international travels that certain experiences and practices
can’t be translated directly into other cultures. He considered whether the company culture he’d
worked so hard to develop would work outside the U.S., or whether it would cause confusion and
misunderstanding.
He made a plan to make the international expansion as smooth as possible: He would find
foreign job candidates who could adapt to the culture he had carefully developed. The company
would then train those new hires on the ins and outs of working within a culture of autonomy and
accountability. Besides, while Hastings adjusted international employees to the Netflix way, he
would also remain open to adapting to and learning from their cultures.
高一英语试卷 第 3页(共 10页) 高一英语试卷 第 4页(共 10页)
Apart from Hastings’ give-and-take approach to cross-cultural adaptation, companies can
preserve their core philosophies by sticking to Meyer’s principles when expanding operations to
other countries. Determine the pressure points. Identify the specific aspects that are likely to cause
conflict in decision-making processes and the approach to timelines. And then have a diverse
workforce in every office. Having homogeneous (同质 ) staff at each office might create gaps
between international offices. For example, a Singapore office with mostly young creatives might
have a hard time communicating with an office in Copenhagen with mostly middle-aged finance
experts. Ensuring diversity helps all employees get used to working with other cultures on a
day-to-day basis.
20.What is the focus of the book No Rules Rules?
A.Hastings’ achievements in expanding Netflix.
B.Netflix’s approaches to growing internationally.
C.Hastings and Meyer’s cooperation in creating Netflix.
D.Netflix’s efforts to develop cultural diversity in its expansion.
21.Why did Hastings worry copying his previous practice would cause confusion?
A.Each culture had their uniqueness.
B.He did many international travels.
C.Individual workers had distinct personalities.
D.People tended to reject taking accountability.
22.What does the author think of Hastings’ expansion plan?
A.It’s unlikely to work in practice.
B.It’s too ambitious to be carried out.
C.It’s an ordinary plan without creativity.
D.It’s flexible enough to ensure the successful expansoin.
23.What does Meyer suggest the company do?
A.Appoint young creative workers.
B.Recognize the sources of pressure.
C.Take a give-and-take approach.
D.Hire a homogeneous staff.

Tourists across China have enjoyed a series of cultural events, from traditional to modern,
and discovered new destinations during this year’s five-day May Day holiday.
Items on China’s traditional intangible cultural heritage list proved to be popular with
travelers in many regions. In Lantian county, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, tourists were
amazed by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中钢丝 ) walking in the Uygur
language. Meanwhile, in east China’s Changzhou City, music festivals attracted huge crowds of
travelers, and local authorities introduced measures to ensure the comfort of visitors. They arranged
500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up more than 10,000 free parking spaces and extended the
operation hours of the subway network until 11:30 p.m.
And it’s not just big cities that drew in visitors during this holiday. Holiday makers decided to
go for natural views, less-crowded scenic spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from
Chinese travel booking platform Ctrip showed that orders for fourth-tier and below cities increased
by 140 percent on a yearly basis, outperforming those in first and second-tier cities.
Wu Sa, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute of the National Development and
Reform Commission, expressed belief that the popularity of usual major destinations like Beijing,
Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu is not decreasing, but explained that a good number
of travelers are looking to diversify the scope of their travels, towards new and previously lesser-known
places.
Scientific and space projects have also been a hit travel destination this week, from the
Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China to the world’s largest single-dish radio
telescope in the southwestern province of Guizhou. “I mainly wanted to take my child to appreciate
some of China’s leading space technology and the development trend of big data, so that he can
understand the advanced technology of our motherland,” said a tourist named Hu Wanping.
24.What attracted tourists to the Changzhou City?
A.The launch of music festivals.
B.The Aerial tightrope walking performance.
C.The celebration of traditional cultural events.
D.The measures to provide comfort for tourists.
25.What may account for people’s choice of fourth-tier and below cities?
A.Famous scenic spots.
B.Low travelling expenses.
C.Intangible heritage culture.
D.Convenient means of transportation.
26.What can be inferred from the text?
A.The growth of visitors is causing various social issues.
B.Scientific and space projects receive the least attention.
C.Orders for major destinations in big cities are decreasing.
D.Tourists are open-minded as to the choices of spending holidays.
27.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Festivals and Celebrations across China
B.The Popularity of Well-known Destinations
C.New Trend for Labor Day Tourist Destinations
D.China’s Traditional Intangible Cultural Heritage

Why should we explore space? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on
conditions and people on Earth? Perhaps the best answer lies in our history. What made our
ancestors move from the trees onto the plains? Did a wider distribution of our species offer a
better chance of survival?
Nearly all successful civilizations have been willing to explore space. In exploring, the
dangers of surrounding areas may be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, these
dangers have the ability to harm us. With knowledge, their effects may be decreased.
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space
allows new resources to be created. Resources translate into success at survival. Knowledge or
techniques acquired in exploring always filter from the developers to the general population.
Techniques may be medical applications, such as new drugs or ways of living to increase the
quantity or the quality of time lived. Techniques may be social, allowing the people in a society to
better understand those within or outside that culture.
European Space Agency(ESA) does what individual European nations cannot do on their
own. Scientists from European nations can function at world-class level in their specialist fields,
in co-operation rather than competition. By studying alien worlds, such as Venus, Mars or
Saturn’s moon Titan, we can place our own world in context. ESA’s exploration of the Solar
System is focused on understanding the Earth’s relationship with the other planets, essential
stepping stones for exploring the wider Universe.
While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or
how it works, it also holds dangers. The chance of a large asteroid or comet hitting the Earth is
small. But given time, it will happen. The dangers exist and knowledge can allow us as a species
to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not
exist.
28.Why does the author list questions in the first paragraph?
A.To stress the wide distribution of our species.
B.To introduce human’s efforts to explore space.
C.To illustrate the importance of space exploration.
D.To highlight the long history of space exploration.
29.What does space exploration enable humans to do?
A.Uncover the unknown resources of the universe.
B.Understand better about the culture of society.
C.Gain more knowledge about the origin of life.
D.Reduce the harmful impact on alien worlds.
30.How does ESAwork in space exploration?
A.It compares the Earth with other planets.
B.It focuses its study on a particular planet.
C.It advocates cooperative work of individual nations.
D.It encourages scientists to compete in their specialized fields.
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Exploring space means rescuing ourselves.
B.There is a small chance of comet hitting the Earth in future.
C.The formation of the universe requires further explanation.
D.Wonders about the universe reflect potential risks from space.

Online sharing within social media sites helps teenagers stay in touch with friends or connect
with new ones. However, it may have negative effects on some of them. You can take steps to help
your teens use social media responsibly and reduce some of the possible bad impacts.
Set rules and limits as needed. This helps prevent social media from getting in the way of
activities, sleep, meals or homework. For example, you could make a rule about not using social
media until homework is done. 32 You also could choose to keep social media off-limits
during certain times. These times might include during family meals and an hour before bed. Set an
example by following these rules yourself. And let your teen know what the consequences will be if
your rules aren’t followed.
Monitor your teen’s accounts. The American Psychological Association recommends you
regularly review your child’s social media use during the early teen years. One way to monitor is to
follow or “friend” your child’s social accounts. As your teen gets older and more mature (成熟),
you can choose to monitor your teen’s social media less. 33
Have regular talks with your teen about social media. Encourage your teen to let you know
if something online is confusing or disturbing. 34 For example, you can teach your teen to
question whether content is accurate. You also can explain that social media is full of images about
beauty and lifestyle that are not realistic.
35 You might want to tell your child about your own social media habits. That can help
you set a good example and keep your regular talks from being one-sided.
A.Be a role model for your teen.
B.Encourage face-to-face contact.
C.Or you could set a daily time limit for social media use.
D.Your teen’s maturity level can help guide your decision.
E.You also could take a look at your teen’s internet history.
F.Those talks offers you chances to give your child advice about social media.

In certain situations, we can never fully recognize the value of what has occurred until the
moment is gone. Then we are left to reflect on every detail. One such moment for me was being
invited to participate in the National Storytelling Festival as the youngest 36 . I have spoken
on a variety of 37 , but this particular festival was an event like no other. Thousands of
people drifted in and out of tents as storytellers weaved (编织) words into memories both 38
and humorous.
I stood on a stage with a single microphone. All eyes were on me, a feeling that 39

This sort of communication is responsible for the smallest and largest 44 between
people in life. The festival is 45 on communities coming together to listen. Not to hear, but
to 46 listen. I think of the lonely people of the world, the misunderstood, the uncelebrated.
Listening to their stories opens up doors and relationship possibilities that are far more peaceful in
nature than 47 or even ignoring.
The most powerful part of the 48 was not the fact that I spoke or that the most brilliant
storytellers in the world were there, but that I 49 first-hand that people do in fact understand
and 50 closer communication. I finally understand the educational world is in need of
spaces like these where truth comes to be heard. Now I hold closely to the belief that storytelling
connects individuals.

One Possible Version:
My Volunteering Experience
Volunteering plays a significant role in society, benefiting both individuals and communities.
It allows us to give back to society and also helps us grow as individuals.
I vividly remember my experience of volunteering at a local nursing home. During my regular
visits, I tried to keep the elderly company by engaging in conversations, reading to them or taking
them for walks. On other occasions, I might also assist with their daily chores to ensure them no
worries about life. The precious experience brought the true joy of a fulfilling life not only to them
but also to myself, which taught me the value of the genuine care, empathy and human connection.
It was incredibly rewarding to see the smiles on their faces and to know that I was making a
difference in their lives.
So let’s act together and help to construct a more supportive society.

These days young people are crazy about rap or rock-n-roll, which is something beyond my

W: I feel like we’ve arrived in Paris.
M: This may look like Paris, but we’re in Blackpool, in the North of England — about an hour’s
drive from Manchester. And as you can see, it’s a seaside town and for more than a hundred
years people have been coming here for their holidays. In fact, Joanna and I used to come here
when we were kids.
W: Yes, that’s right. I used to love coming to Blackpool — the beach, the sunshine, the fish and
chips. And the ice cream...
M: And I love the theme park and all the rides. Come on! This is going to be great.
W: It’s really a city of romantic charm and exquisite food.

W: Hi, Britt Foxton. You’re the founder of a website devoted to women’s basketball?
M: No doubt about that, and I’ve also written a book on the same subject.
W: When did you get started with the site?
M: Although it really got going once I was at university, it actually started out as a high-school
project — you know a “design a website” kind of thing — but it wasn’t like anyone expected it
to become real or anything.
W: Wow! So you designed a site about girls’ basketball, a sport you’re passionate about?
M: You got it right. I called it femalebasket.com. I knew the name wasn’t right, and before it got
really successful I changed it to matchgirl.com and that was a really good move. And although
it started with basketball, the site’s grown to include other games as well. It features a variety of
articles and reviews on everything ranging from basketball to computer games, plus some more
traditionally girly material as well. But the coverage of team sports is at the heart of it, anything
about make-up or fashion is just secondary to that.
W: That sounds like a legendary story. I really appreciate your creativity.

What do astronauts eat in space? Different countries have different recipes. During the early
1960s, Russia developed the earliest space food which can only be sucked, but astronauts still felt
hungry after eating them. To solve the problem, more satisfying food has been gradually created.
Now Russian astronauts can enjoy a variety of food similar to that on earth, with a spoon or fork
rather than a straw. For American astronauts, fast food is always their main food. Their recipe
includes sausage pies, spicy grilled fish and drinks like Coca-Cola. Most of the space food in
Japan is traditional Japanese food. Rice balls, tomato fish and mountain vegetables are all
common for Japanese astronauts, which has expressed their unique cultural identity. As a country
with great history, China has adopted their food therapy theory into adjusting astronauts’ physical
conditions. For example, when the astronauts lack appetite, they can eat specially made porridge.
Also Chinese astronauts can have more delicious food like spiced beef, roasted pork, and even ice
cream.
