At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
4. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it. B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it. D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
5. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
6. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A. reflects the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create.
C 5. B 6. A 7. B

Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming.Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer tree covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.
We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.
8. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may__________.
A. result in a warming climate
B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently
C. lead to a longer fire season
D. protect the forests and the environment there
9. The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT
A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere
B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase
C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space
D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun
10. Earlier studies about northern forest fires
A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C. suggest that people should take measures to protect the environment
D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming
11. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may
A. warm the climate as the supposition goes
B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate
C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D help to gain more energy rather than release more energy
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据第二段“This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions.(这一发现表明,采取措施防止北方森林减少温室气体的释放,可能会使北方地区的气候变暖。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段“The following spring however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer tree covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.( 然而,第二年春天,火灾区域内的土地比火灾前更明亮,因为覆盖地面的树木更少。地面上的雪将更多的阳光反射回太空,导致降温。)”可知,地上的雪反射阳光这是大火的间接的影响,是在第二年春天的时候发生的事情,并不是immediate effects。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.(其他科学家的早期研究表明,北部地区的火灾会加速气候变暖,因为燃烧树木和植物产生的温室气体会释放到大气中,从而锁住热量。)”
根据文章第一段“Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.(与阿拉斯加、加拿大和西伯利亚的森林大火使气候变暖的假设相反,科学家们发现,在被烧毁的树木允许更多的雪将更多的阳光反射到太空的地区,可能会出现降温。)”
D
Imagine this. You need an image of a balloon for a work presentation and turn to an AI text-to-image generator, like Midjourney or DALL-E, to create a suitable image. You enter the prompt (提示词) “red balloon against a blue sky” but the generator returns an image of an egg instead.
What’s going on? The generator you’re using may have been “poisoned”. What does this mean? Text-to-image generators work by being trained on large datasets that include millions or billions of images. Some of the generators have been trained by indiscriminately (任意的) scraping online images, many of which may be under copyright. This has led to many copyright infringement (侵害) cases where artists have accused big tech companies of stealing and profiting from their work.
This is also where the idea of “poison” comes in. Researchers who want to empower individual artists have recently created a tool named “Nightshade” to fight back against unauthorized image scraping. The tool works by slightly altering an image’s pixels (像素) in a way that confuses the computer vision system but leaves the image unaltered to a human’s eyes. If an organization then scrapes one of these images to train a future AI model, its data pool becomes “poisoned”. This can result in mistaken learning, which makes the generator return unintended results. As in our earlier example, a balloon might become an egg.
The higher the number of “poisoned” images in the training data, the greater the impact. Because of how generative AI works, the damage from “poisoned” images also affects related prompt keywords. For example, if a “poisoned” image of a Picasso work is used in training data, prompt results for masterpieces from other artists can also be affected.
Possibly, tools like Nightshade can be abused by some users to intentionally upload “poisoned” images in order to confuse AI generators. But the Nightshade’s developer hopes the tool will make big tech companies more respectful of copyright. It does challenge a common belief among computer scientists that data found online can be used for any purpose they see fit.
Human rights activists, for example, have been concerned for some time about the indiscriminate use of machine vision in wider society. This concern is particularly serious concerning facial recognition. There is a clear connection between facial recognition cases and data poisoning, as both relate to larger questions around technological governance. It may be better to see data poisoning as an innovative solution to the denial of some fundamental human rights.
12. What does the underlined word “scraping” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. facilitating B. collecting C. damaging D. polishing
13. According to the passage, what may adding poisoned data lead to?
A. increasing the accuracy of returned information
B. causing users to forget the prompt key words
C. affecting the training of generative AI
D. discriminating against great masterpieces
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Data poisoning is somehow justified to direct attention to human rights.
B. Computer scientists has learned to respect the copyright of most artists.
C. Nightshade is being abused by human rights activists to recognize faces.
D. The issue of technological governance has aroused the lawyers’ interest.
15. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A Data Poisoning: Government Empowering Citizens to Protect Themselves
B. Data Poisoning: Addressing Facial Recognition Issues Among Artists
C. Data Poisoning: Risks and Rewards of Generative AI Data Training
D. Data Poisoning: Restricting Innovation or Empowering Artists
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第三段“The tool works by slightly altering an image’s pixels (像素) in a way that confuses the computer vision system but leaves the image unaltered to a human’s eyes. If an organization then scrapes one of these images to train a future AI model, its data pool becomes “poisoned”. This can result in mistaken learning, which makes the generator return unintended results.(这个工具的工作原理是轻微地改变图像的像素,以一种让计算机视觉系统感到困惑但人类肉眼却看不出变化的方式。如果一个组织随后抓取这些图像来训练未来的AI模型,那么它的数据集就变得“有毒”了。这可能会导致错误的学习,使得生成器返回非预期的结果)”可知,添加有毒数据会影响生成式AI的训练。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Possibly, tools like Nightshade can be abused by some users to intentionally upload “poisoned” images in order to confuse AI generators. But the Nightshade’s developer hopes the tool will make big tech companies more respectful of copyright.(像Nightshade这样的工具可能会被一些用户滥用,故意上传“有毒”的图像,以迷惑AI生成器。但Nightshade的开发者希望这个工具能让大型科技公司更加尊重版权)”以及最后一段“Human rights activists, for example, have been concerned for some time about the indiscriminate use of machine vision in wider society. This concern is particularly serious concerning facial recognition. There is a clear connection between facial recognition cases and data poisoning, as both relate to larger questions around technological governance. It may be better to see data poisoning as an innovative solution to the denial of some fundamental human rights.(例如,人权活动家一段时间以来一直担心机器视觉在更广泛的社会中被滥用。 故选A。
根据第一段“You enter the prompt (提示词) “red balloon against a blue sky” but the generator returns an image of an egg instead.(你输入提示词“蓝天下的红色气球”,但生成器返回的却是一张鸡蛋的图片)”以及第二段“The generator you’re using may have been “poisoned”. What does this mean? Text-to-image generators work by being trained on large datasets that include millions or billions of images. Some of the generators have been trained by indiscriminately (任意的) scraping online images, many of which may be under copyright. This has led to many copyright infringement (侵害) cases where artists have accused big tech companies of stealing and profiting from their work.(你正在使用的生成器可能已经被“投毒”了。
“TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend.____16____ And today the phrase “a night’s talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.
Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect conversation with a friend at night is necessarily rare, for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out,“___17___ The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, must therefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist.
There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.
___18___ We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can truly hold a night's conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.
___19___ There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time. ___20___
A. There is much truth in that statement.
B. Friendship fades without a sincere conversation.
C. Whatever it is, conversationalist does contribute to our happiness.
D. Such conversations remain among the memories that we cherish for life.
E. Those who are wise seldom know how to talk, and those who talk are seldom wise.
F. A similar difference may be noted between business letters and the letters of literary friends.
G. Sometimes we find it at the happy reunion of old friends, or among strangers on a distant journey.
A 17. B 18. F 19. G 20. C

根据上文的““TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend.(“与君一席话,胜读十年书”,这是一位中国老学者与一位朋友交谈后的评价。)”和下文的“And today the phrase “a night’s talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.(今天,“a night’s talk”这个短语已经成为一个流行的表达方式,用来形容和朋友在晚上愉快的谈话,无论是过去的还是预期的。)”
根据上文的“Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect conversation with a friend at night is necessarily rare, for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out(像在晚上与朋友进行一次完美的交谈这样的无上快乐是非常罕见的,因为正如剧作家李立翁所指出的那样)”和下文的“The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, must therefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist.(“因此,发现一个在山间寺庙里的人,他真正了解生活,同时也了解谈话的艺术,一定是最令人愉快的事情之一,就像天文学家发现了一颗新行星或植物学家发现了一种新的植物。”)”
根据上文的“There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.(单纯的谈话和谈话本身有明显的区别。汉语中有“说”和“谈”的区别,这意味着在谈话中使用的语言更健谈,更悠闲,话题更琐碎,更不像商业。)”和下文的“We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can truly hold a night's conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.(我们几乎可以和任何人讨论业务,但是很少有人能和我们真正进行一夜的交谈。因此,当我们找到一位真正的健谈者时,其乐趣即使不比阅读一位令人愉快的作家的作品更大,也与听到他的声音和看到他的手势的乐趣相当。)”可知,F项“在商业信函和文学朋友的信函之间也可以发现类似的区别。”承接上文,说明谈话与商业和文学朋友的来往不一样,引出下文解释它们的不同之处。故选F项。
【19题详解】
根据下文的“There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time.(会有关于鬼魂和狐妖的聊天,夹杂着有趣的故事或39条慷慨激昂的评论:关于国际事务,有时在我们意识到这一点之前,一个明智的观察者和健谈者可能会揭示困扰你很长时间的事情。)”
根据上文的“There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time.(会有关于鬼魂和狐妖的聊天,夹杂着有趣的故事或39条慷慨激昂的评论:关于国际事务,有时在我们意识到这一点之前,一个明智的观察者和健谈者可能会揭示困扰你很长时间的事情。)”

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔). That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve (开辟) her own path.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork (步法) and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates (候选人). Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made úp her mind to stick with her choice.

Even when she was made fun of by boys in the gym, she bit her lip tightly and continued her training. Finally, the tryout came. Extremely nervous though, she stepped into the boxing ring, moved fast and punched hard to the surprise of other candidates. After the tryout, Kelly left the gym confidently, knowing she did her best.
Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. To her delight, Kelly found her name on the list. At dinner that day, Kelly gathered her courage and said to her mom, “I'm sorry, Mom. I've made the boxing team and I'm ready to carve my own path.” At first, a flicker of disbelief and shock crossed her mom's face, but after a long, heart-to-heart talk, she gave Kelly a bear hug and whispered softly, “I'm so proud of you for being yourself. ”

D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy
C affecting the training of generative AI
D. discriminating against great masterpieces
A. Data Poisoning: Government Empowering Citizens to Protect Themselves
B. Data Poisoning: Addressing Facial Recognition Issues Among Artists
C. Data Poisoning: Risks and Rewards of Generative AI Data Training
D. Data Poisoning: Restricting Innovation or Empowering Artists

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
