A video went popular on August 15 2023. In the video, there was a group of tourists traveling in the desert in Turpan, Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Suddenly they found their hair standing on end, which scared everyone on the scene. According to the tourists, their hair returned to normal situation after they drove 3 kilometers down the road.
Many people on the Internet said the phenomenon (现象) is a sign of a coming storm. They suggested that the group should have run away as soon as possible. However, Feng Minxue, an expert said that running away is not the best choice in such a situation.
According to Feng, if a person’s hair is dry and there is a little static electricity (静电), there is still time to leave. However, if the hair has already stood on end, running can be fatal because it may put the person in danger. The correct way is to lower one’s body height. If they can’t leave the mountain top in time, they should quickly crouch (蹲) down in that place, bring their feet as close together as possible and use their hands to protect their head, avoiding touching the ground.
Wu Xueke, a professor, thinks that the clouds with electricity above the head of the tourists caused the situation. The electric field distortion (畸变) above their head became strong, and then it caused static electricity in their hair. In some serious cases, the person might be hit by lightning. When you think of 3D-printing, you may think of small objects. But three companies are working together to print something much bigger. They’re using a large 3D printer to create the first two-story (两层的) 3D-printed house in the US.
Usually, 3D-printing involves (涉及) a machine building something by putting down many layers (层) of a material—often hot plastic. When the material gets hard, the layers stick together to create a finished object. The method here is similar, but uses concrete (混凝土).
3D-printing has been around for a while. But until recently, it hasn’t been used much in the US for building houses. Now, that’s changing. Several 3D-printed houses have been built in the US and more are planned. So far, no one in the US has created a two- story 3D-printed house. And this one will be a large, 3-bedroom house. The house, which is in Houston, Texas, was designed by a company called HANNAH. Another company, PERI 3D CONSTR (建筑), provided the 3D printer. And a construction company called CIVE is doing the actual building.
3D-printed concrete houses are stronger and hold up better in serious storms than houses built with wood. This can save money in the long run. Since the machine is doing the building, fewer workers are needed, which also saves money.
Ms Lok, who designed the house, says that with 3D-printing, it’s easy to make each house different from other houses. For example, she’s using the 3D printer to create special shelves all through the Houston house. These kinds of changes can apply to almost anything. “The printer doesn’t care if you print the same chair 100 times or you print 100 different chairs.” says Ms Lok. That means that in the future, each house could be created specially for its owners.
16. What material is used to print the two-story 3D-printed house?
A. Plastic. B. Concrete. C. Wood. D. Stone.
17. Which company does Ms Lok work for?
A. HANNAH. B. PERI3D CONSTR. C. CIVE. D. HOUSTON.
18. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How 3D-printing has developed. B. How 3D-printed houses are built.
C. The popularity of 3D-printed houses. D. The advantages of 3D-printed houses.
19. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. 3D-printing will become more popular in the future.
B. People in the future will all live in 3D-printed houses.
C. People can build houses themselves with 3D-printing in the future.
D. 3D-printing can help people build a house based on their personal styles.
20. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Three Companies in the US
B. 3D-Printing Makes People’s Life Easier
C. The First Two-Story 3D-Printed House in US
D. 3D-Printed Houses Are Cheaper Than Other Houses
