The stresses from everyday life can get to anyone — including children. But a varied and balanced diet can go a long way toward helping your family relax. Here are some kid-friendly foods to help you do just that.
THE FOOD: Whole grains
WHY IT MATTERS: Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) remind us of food like pasta and veggie bread, etc. Unfortunately, we often make such foods less healthy by using refined grains rather than whole grains.
HOW TO START: Adding whole grains helps us stabilize (稳定) our blood sugar so we are less hungry. Simply choosing “whole grain” versions of your kids’ favorite foods is an easy way to get started.
THE FOOD: Fruits and veggies
WHY IT MATTERS: Literally all the reasons!
HOW TO START: Try mixing things up by combining different foods into flavor combinations, like apple slices with peanut butter or veggie sticks with hummus. Combining colors or arranging foods in visually inviting ways keeps things interesting.
THE FOOD: Fish
WHY IT MATTERS: Oily fishes are rich in “good fats”. Not only are fish such as salmon excellent for general brain health, but omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D have been found to be helpful in reducing anxiety.
HOW TO START: By normalizing a food your children aren’t familiar with, you can help them build a more inclusive diet as they grow older.
THE FOOD: Dairy
WHY IT MATTERS: Trouble getting your kids to go to bed already? Try dairy sources like milk, yogurt and cheese. Bedtime milk can help release your stress and bring on more restful sleep. Yogurt may also be a powerful source of probiotics, an important component (成分) of whole-body health.
HOW TO START: Milk and cookies are one way to go, but you can also try getting your kids to try protein-packed yogurt with fresh fruits and nuts and a drizzle of honey. Hot coco a hits the spot on a snowy afternoon; all you need is some milk and dark chocolate.
1. What is a benefit of whole grains?
A. Increasing one’s desire to eat. B. Preventing kids from getting hungry.
C. Enabling kids to put on weight. D. Helping maintain normal blood sugar.
2 Which kind of food contributes to a good sleep?
A. Whole grains. B. Fruits and veggies.
C. Fish. D. Dairy.
3. Who is the text intended for?
A. Parents. B. Children. C. Doctors. D. Nutritionists.
【答案】1. D 2. D 3. A

In 2020, high school history teacher Cathy Cluck left school for spring break and didn’t come back. The coronavirus pandemic had shut down schools, and Cluck and her colleagues had to adapt to virtual teaching. When the new school year started in August, Cluck wanted to find a way to make a connection with her students, despite not being able to meet them in person.
“I asked my headmaster if I could take off and log in to my classes from actual historical sites and he said, ‘Go for it, figure out the technology and make it work.’” said Cluck, who teaches at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas.
She started in Williamsburg and spent a day in Jamestown, Virginia. After Virginia, Cluck drove to Washington, D.C. From there, Cluck headed farther north to Weehawken, New Jersey, where the Burr-Hamilton duel (决斗) happened. She then went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, stopping at Civil War battlefields along the way, then drove to Memphis, Tennessee. Her 15-day road trip ended around Labor Day.
Cluck filmed her journey for her YouTube channel and spoke about each historical site she visited. She even brought a lightweight, foldable desk, so she could conduct virtual classes from whichever landmark she was at for the day.
Cluck said she was worried that she wouldn’t be able to make the same connections with students as she would if they were in the classroom, but the road trip ended up bonding them.
She hoped her historic travels inspired some of her high school students to hop in their cars and go on a road trip. “I hope that they would realize that, by traveling to these spots, it’s not just history, but America as a country is beautiful. And the people are beautiful,” she said. “And it’s really easy just to fly over to get from one destination to another, but part of the fun for me of road trips is stopping and seeing the places along the way.”
4. Why didn’t Cathy Cluck return to school after the spring break?
A. She wanted to teach history in a new way.
B. The school allowed her to work from home.
C. The school was closed due to the pandemic.
D. She decided to make a trip across the country.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Cluck’s adventures. B. Cluck’s challenges.
C. Cluck’s travel routes. D. Cluck’s virtual classes.
6. What did Cluck remind her students to do during a road trip?
A. Focus on more than history. B. Stop for a rest from time to time.
C. Share their experiences online. D. Get the most fun along the way.
7. Which of the following can best describe Cathy Cluck?
A. Brave and honest. B. Enthusiastic and creative.
C. Kind and generous. D. Knowledgeable and humorous.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. B

Kites and kite-flying have a long history in China. According to Chinese records, in the Spring and Autumn Period, more than 2,000 years ago, a carpenter (木匠) named Gongshu Ban invented a wooden kite. But kites have also seen use and appreciation in the US as well.
Many American schoolchildren are told story of how Benjamin Franklin, a famous early US politician and inventor, used kites to advance his studies of electricity by flying a kite with a metal key attached during a thunderstorm in June 1752.
But Franklin was not the only US inventor to use kites to push the boundaries (边界) of science. Wilbur and Orville Wright are well-known as the inventors of the first manned aircraft at North Carolina, US in 1903, but they used kites as a way of testing their theories and observing possibilities in the years before, according to the American Kitefliers Association. Alexander Graham Bell, the American inventor of the telephone, also ripened what was called a “tetrahedral kite” in an attempt to find a design that was both strong and light enough to be used in a heavier-than-air flying machine.
Besides their use in US inventions and discoveries, however, kites are enjoyed by many throughout the US at different times of the year. Most notably, kite-making and kite-flying have been used to strengthen relations between the US and Japan through different festivals like the Blossom Kite Festival in Washington DC and the Japanese Kite Festival in Denver, Colorado,
The largest kite-flying festival in the US, however, is the Washington State International Kite Festival. According to the World Kite Museum, this festival is a week-long kite celebration and competition held each year during the third week of August at Long Beach, Washington. The event brings in famous kit e fliers from around the world, who use special choreography (编舞) to wow audiences numbering in the tens of thousands.
8. Why is kite-flying in China mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To give an example. B. To advertise for kites.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To tell a story about kites.
9. What does the underlined word “ripened” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Changed. B. Developed. C. Selected. D. Discovered.
10. Which of the following highlights the Washington State International Kite Festival?
A. Its long history. B. Its kite-flying performance.
C. Its large audiences. D. Its kite-making competition.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kites take flight in the US B. US leads the world in kite-flying
C. The kite-flying festivals in the US D. The roles of kites in American science

Google has introduced Interview Warmup, a tool designed to help job seekers to become more confident and comfortable with job interviews. The tool, first announced in October 2022 at the second Google for Africa Event, was designed to help Google Career Certificates learners prepare for job interviews. It is now available for everyone to use.
According to Google, an average job listing in Africa attracts over 2,400 applicants. And this means that the chances of landing a job can be slim. The company also noted that interviewing in a new field can be hard, especially when the job seeker does not have friends, family, or mentors who can help them practice and prepare.
Interview Warmup enables job seekers to practice answering questions carefully selected by industry experts. Head of Brand and Reputation at Google Africa, Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, said, “We are excited about Interview Warmup because it shows how new technologies have the potential to help young people in Africa develop the skills needed to grow their careers. The tool can help create more opportunities for African job seekers.”
“As important as it is to learn the skills needed to perform well on a new job, it is even more important to learn the skills needed to qualify for roles,” she added.
According to her, the Interview Warmup tool strengthens Google’s commitment to continue helping job seekers in Africa with their interview skills and prepare them for the careers they want.
12. How does Interview Warmup help job seekers?
A. By reducing their mental pressure.
B. By improving their interview skills.
C. By providing job information for them.
D. By teaching them computer knowledge.
13. What is the job market like in Africa?

Deciding on a destination is easy. However, choosing a suitable route is the greatest challenge for every traveller. With so much to see and do, it can be easy to bounce (摇摆不定) between cultural highlights, completely forgetting to take the great outdoors into consideration. ___16___ And hiking is among the easiest to organize and completely rewarding ways to make it happen.
Few outdoor activities are as generally accessible as hiking. Trails (小径) exist in every country, and outside many major cities. It’s often possible to hike year-round, and even in places where temperatures drop below freezing, snowshoes can help hikers hit the trails anyway. Do a little research in advance of your trip or seek help from a few locals upon arrival to find the best trails around. ___17___
Besides hiking boots, it takes more to be prepared for a day hike. ___18___ Snacks are also necessary for keeping your energy up on longer hikes. The most prepared hikers might also bring a first-aid kit, compass, or other basic tools, but even then, everything you need should fit nicely into an easy-to-carry pack.
___19___ This makes hiking an excellent family outing on condition that the little ones are small enough to carry with relative ease or big enough to finish the hike on their own two feet. Pick the right route for your family, and always come prepared with the basics.
___20___ A well-timed hike can give you just the energy you need to keep you awake. Hiking will also tire you out, however, so it’s not a bad strategy to adjust the time accordingly. Beyond being fun, fulfilling, and a great way to get to know a destination, hiking might even ease you into the time zone and help you better enjoy all those other activities as well.
A. They are sure of great help.

上文“With so much to see and do, it can be easy to bounce (摇摆不定) between cultural highlights, completely forgetting to take the great outdoors into consideration.(由于有太多的景点要去参观和太多的活动要去参加,游客很容易流连忘返于文化景观之间,完全忘记了户外活动)”讲在旅途中人们常常忽略户外活动,F项“Adding a healthy dose of nature is certain to improve any trip.(增加健康的户外活动肯定会让任何旅行都增色不少)”承接上文,提出可以在旅行中增加户外活动,引出下文“And hiking is among the easiest to organize and completely rewarding ways to make it happen.(而徒步旅行是最容易组织且能完全达到这一目的的有益方式之一)”中的“徒步旅行”这一话题,上下文衔接自然。故选F项。
【17题详解】
上文“Do a little research in advance of your trip or seek help from a few locals upon arrival to find the best trails around.(在旅行前做一些调查,或者在到达后向一些当地人寻求帮助,以找到最好的路线)”就如何寻找合适的徒步旅行路线,提出向当地人寻求帮助,A项“They are sure of great help.(他们肯定能帮上大忙)”承接上文,强调这一做法的作用,句中“They”指代上文中“locals”。故选A项。
【18题详解】
上文“Besides hiking boots, it takes more to be prepared for a day hike.(除了登山靴,一天的徒步旅行还需要更多的准备)”提出除登山靴外,还要准备更多的东西,E项“Hikers should always carry plenty of water and sunscreen.(徒步旅行者应该随身携带大量的水和防晒霜)”首先列举了水和防晒霜,与下文“Snacks are also necessary for keeping your energy up on longer hikes.(在长途徒步旅行中,零食也是保持精力充沛的必需品)”构成并列关系,都是介绍徒步旅行需要准备的东西,上下文语意一致。故选E项。
【19题详解】
根据下文“This makes hiking an excellent family outing on condition that the little ones are small enough to carry with relative ease or big enough to finish the hike on their own two feet.(这使得徒步旅行成为一种极好的家庭郊游方式,只要小家伙小到可以相对容易地携带,或者大到可以用自己的双脚完成徒步旅行)”可知,设空句中的信息是“使徒步旅行成为一种极好的家庭郊游方式”的原因。
下文“A well-timed hike can give you just the energy you need to keep you awake. Hiking will also tire you out, however, so it’s not a bad strategy to adjust the time accordingly.(适时的徒步旅行可以给你足够的能量让你保持清醒。然而,徒步旅行也会让你感到疲惫,所以相应地调整时间是个不错的策略)”说明徒步旅行可以让人精力充沛,保持清醒,也能让人精力充沛,是对B项“Hiking is both energizing and tiring.(徒步旅行既使人精力充沛又让人感到很累)”中关键词“energizing”和“tiring”的进一步阐述。故选B项。

Cycling began as a means to get around, but quickly became a passion that I fell in love with.
My first event of 2023 was in April, a self supported one-day ride of the rugged 100-mile White Rim Trail through Canyonlands National Park, near Moab, Utah. It was an amazing day, really tough at times, but my best friend and I had some laughs and enjoyed the beautiful views.
My second event for the year was in May, a 12-hour mountain bike race that I did as a partner with a friend I met last year at Rezduro, the first mountain bike enduro race (耐力赛) held on the Navajo Nation. It was a big day on the bike. I felt nervous going into it, but the training paid off. I was focused on my ride, and felt strong on the bike, even during the heavy rainstorm that happened in the race.
I am currently registered (报名) for Rezduro again, and excited for the event. Rezduro opened up a whole new world of riding to me. And this year, I’ve already taken two trips to clinics (培训班) in Arizona to help coach mountain bike skills on the Navajo Nation. One clinic was held in March, and the other in May. Most of the participants were women and girls.

Each time I saw a participant’s face light up with understanding or joy, I knew I was making a difference. I was teaching skills, but I was also teaching confidence and empowerment. I left Arizona feeling inspired and motivated to continue my cycling journey, to explore new trails, to push my limits, and to inspire others along the way. Cycling has given me so much, and I am grateful to be able to share it with the world.

C Enabling kids to put on weight. D. Helping maintain normal blood sugar.
2. Which kind of food contributes to a good sleep?
A. Whole grains. B. Fruits and veggies.
C. Fish. D. Dairy.
3. Who is the text intended for?
A. Parents. B. Children. C. Doctors. D. Nutritionists.

Users can start practising by clicking on the homepage, choosing the job they are interviewing for, and then do a practice interview that consists of five randomly (随机) selected questions or individual interview questions.
Once the user answers a question, the tool turns it into written words in real-time and provides feedback using machine learning. Besides this, the tool’s machine learning also identifies certain job-related terms and phrases that are overused and generates common “talking points” to improve responses.
B By improving their interview skills.
C. By providing job information for them.
D. By teaching them computer knowledge.
13. What is the job market like in Africa?
A. It is changing quickly. B. It is growing steadily.
C. It is far from satisfactory. D. It is highly competitive.
14. What is mainly described in paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. When to use the tool. B. What to expect from the tool.
C. How the tool works. D. Who the tool is designed for.
15. What can we infer from Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde’s words?
A. More people will benefit from Interview Warmup.
B. Technologies can be very helpful if used properly.
C. Interview Warmup has much room for improvement.
D. Job seekers in Africa have little access to technologies.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
B. Hiking is both energizing and tiring.
C. There are a number of ways to see a destination.
D. Unlike rock climbing, hiking doesn’t require any training.

注意:
1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
These trips filled my heart.
