Kites and kite-flying have a long history in China, According to Chinese records. in the
Spring and Autumn Period, more than 2.ooo years ago, a carpenter(木匠) named Gongshu Ban
invented a wooden kite. But kites have also seen use and appreciation in the US as well.
Many American schoolchildren are told story of how Benjamin Franklin, a famous early US

Alexander Graham Bell, the American inventor of the telephone, also ripened what was called a
“tetrahedral kite" in an attempt to find a design that was both strong and light enough to be used
in a heavier-than-air flying machine.
Besides their use in US inventions and discoveries, however, kites are enjoyed by many
throughout the US at different times of the year. Most notably, kite-making and kite-flying have
been used to strengthen relations between the US and Japan through different festivals like the
Blossom Kite Festival in Washington DC and the Japanese Kite Festival in Denver, Colorado.
The largest kite-flying festival in the US, however, is the Washington State International
Kite Festival. According to the World Kite Museum, this festival is a week-long kite celebration
and competition held each year during the third week of August at Long Beach, Washington. The

Deciding on a destination is easy. However, choosing a suitable route is the greatest
challenge for every traveler. With so much to see and do, it can be easy to bounce(摇摆不定)
between cultural highlights, completely forgetting to take the great outdoors into consideration
36 And hiking is among the easiest to organize and completely rewarding ways to make it
happen.
Few outdoor activities are as generally accessible as hiking. Trails(小径) exist in every
country, and outside many major cities. It's often possible to hike year-round, and even in places
where temperatures drop below freezing, snowshoes can help hikers hit the trails anyway. Do a
little research in advance of your trip or seek help from a few locals upon arrival to find the best
trails around.37
Besides hiking boots, it takes more to be prepared for a day hike. 38 Snacks are also
necessary for keeping your energy up on longer hikes. The most prepared hikers might aso
bring a first-aid kit, compass, or other basic tools, but even then, everything you need should fit
nicely into an easy-to-carry pack.
高一英语试题 第8页 共12页
39 This makes hiking an excellent family outing on condition that the little ones are
small enough to carry with relative ease or big enough to finish the hike on their own two feet.
Pick the right route for your family, and always come prepared with the basics.
40 A well-timed hike can give you just the energy you need to keep you awake
Hiking will also tire you out, however, so it's not a bad strategy to adjust the time accordingly.
Beyond being fun, fulfilling, and a great way to get to know a destination, hiking might even
ease you into the time zone and help you better enjoy all those other activities as welf
A. They are sure of great help.
B. Hiking is both energizing and tiring
C. There are a number of ways to see a destination.
D. Unlike rock climbing, hiking doesn't require any training
E. Hikers should always carry plenty of water and sunscreen
