When Melanie Salazar graduated from college on Dec.11, she got to walk across the stage with a very special schoolmate: her grandfather.
Though Salazar, 23, and her grandfather, Rene Neira, now 88, never took any classes together, they both studied at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Salazar graduated with a degree in communications while Neira received a degree of recognition in economics.
According to Salazar, Neira has been “in and out of school” since the 1950s, first pausing his education to marry Salazar’s grandmother and raise their family together. When his children got older, Salazar said Neira would “take a few classes here and there” throughout the years. By the time she graduated high school and was enrolling at Palo Alto, her grandfather had decided he wanted to focus more fully on his education, so he also enrolled at the school. Salazar and Neira also graduated from community college together in 2017. Then, they both went on to UTSA.
Salazar said they did spend time on campus eating lunch or studying in the library together. Salazar also helped Neira with his emails and online courses. She always drove Neira to commute to campus as he didn’t have his car.
Salazar said her favorite memories of going to college with her grandfather were the occasions when he would sometimes attend meeting s for the school club where she was president. “I thought that was really special because he didn’t have to do that, but he would make an effort sometimes to come to my meetings and listen and participate,” Salazar said.
Now they’ve both graduated, Salazar said Neira will continue to enjoy retirement. Meanwhile, Salazar is working at a nonprofit and hopes to start an NGO with some of her colleagues.

It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When passing through a crowd in a narrow place, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” to the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable, and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles and came to appreciate some more polite ways of communicating with people, and here are some more polite ways of interacting with people in UK.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and shop assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be surprising to hear more than one thank-you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, which is different from Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize (批评) others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers repeated several times but none of their explanations were intended as scolding me. It has been my impression that by avoiding scolding, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men!
8. What is the author’s feeling of English politeness?
A. He thinks highly of it. B. He thinks little of it.
C. He thinks it unnecessary. D. He thinks it goes too far.
9. Why does the author mention Germans in paragraph 2?
A. To catch readers’ attention. B. To stress English politeness.
C. To describe German culture. D. To give tips on how to be polite.
10. Which word can be used to describe English way of pointing out mistakes?
A. Rude. B. Direct. C. Acceptable. D. Creative.
11. What method is mainly used to develop the text?
A Telling stories. B. Giving reasons.
C. Referring to theories. D. Making comparisons.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and shop assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be surprising to hear more than one thank-you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, which is different from Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.”(在英国,人们总是互相感谢。
根据最后一段中“Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize (批评) others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers repeated several times but none of their explanations were intended as scolding me. It has been my impression that by avoiding scolding, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable.”(我在逗留期间观察到的另一件事是,英国人很少批评别人。
根据第二段中“People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and shop assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men!”(而且英国男人比德国男人更愿意请女人吃饭。
D
If you’re one of those people who has trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime.
To understand why, you first need to grasp the relationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body hums along at an average temperature of 37℃. But at night, your core body temperature decreases as much as 1.2℃ over the course of six or seven hours of sleep.
This gradual decrease in core body temperature is a key part of the complicated switch of falling asleep and staying asleep. And the faster you can lower the core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep.
One of the ways that your body controls its temperature is through blood vessels (血管) in your skin. If the brain decides the body is too hot, it will widen blood vessels, transporting warmer blood from the body’s core through the rest of the body to cool it down. If the body is too cold, the brain signals the opposite reaction, reducing the flow of blood to the surface.
This is where your feet come in. The palms (掌) of your hands and the bottom surface of your feet are the body’s most efficient heat exchangers, since they are hairless and less insulated (隔热的) than other skin surfaces. Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes vasodilation (血管扩张), which in turn lowers the body’s core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.
12. What does the underlined word “hums” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Becomes active. B. Stays noisy. C. Gets protection. D. Needs balance.
13. What plays a key role in helping people falling asleep?
A. Health conditions. B. Sleep environment.
C. Understanding of sleep. D. Changes of core body temperature.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. How blood transports in the body. B. How people fall asleep quickly.
C. How body temperature changes. D. How body temperature functions.
15. Why is wearing socks suggested at bedtime?
A. To help blood flow faster. B. To prevent feet from cold.
C. To protect blood vessels in feet. D. To increase core body temperature.
【答案】12 A 13. D 14. C 15. A
由文章第二段中“During daylight hours, the human body (白天,人体)”、“at an average temperature of 37℃ (平均温度为37℃)”、“But at night, your core body temperature decreases as much as 1.2℃ over the course of six or seven hours of sleep. (但在晚上,你的核心体温会在六到七个小时的睡眠中下降1.2℃。)”可知,在白天,人体的平均温度为 37 摄氏度;但在晚上,体温在睡眠过程中会下降,身体就没有在白天那样活跃。A. 故选A。
由文章第三段“This gradual decrease in core body temperature is a key part of the complicated switch of falling asleep and staying asleep. And the faster you can lower the core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep. (核心体温的逐渐下降是入睡和保持睡眠的复杂转换的关键部分。你降低核心体温的速度越快,你就会越快入睡。)”可知,核心体温变化的程度影响入睡的速度。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第四段“One of the ways that your body controls its temperature is through blood vessels (血管) in your skin. If the brain decides the body is too hot, it will widen blood vessels, transporting warmer blood from the body’s core through the rest of the body to cool it down. If the body is too cold, the brain signals the opposite reaction, reducing the flow of blood to the surface. (人体控制体温的方式之一是通过皮肤中的血管。如果大脑认为身体太热,它就会扩张血管,将温暖的血液从身体的核心输送到身体的其他部位,从而使身体降温。如果身体太冷,大脑会发出相反的信号,减少流向体表的血液。)”可知,本段主要说明了大脑怎样控制体温变化。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes vasodilation (血管扩张), which in turn lowers the body’s core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet. (研究人员已经证明,睡前用热足浴或穿袜子暖脚可以促进血管舒张,从而比光着脚睡觉更快地降低身体的核心温度。)”可知,睡觉前穿袜子暖脚可以促进血管扩张、加快血液流动速度,从而降低核心体温,加快入睡。故选A。

I am Li Hua, president of the Student Council. Recently, we have noticed that food waste in our school canteen is very serious. Some students leave behind large amounts of food in their plates. Some even leave the food untouched.
In order to put an end to this phenomenon, we should do as follows. We should only buy what we need, which is of great importance. Besides, each class is expected to send a person to supervise the dining situation. Once spotted wasting, he/she will be given an immediate warning.

Long ago there was a king who had twin sons. There was some confusion about which one was born first. As they grew up, the king found a fair way to decide one of them as crown (皇冠) prince.
Calling them together, he said seriously, “My sons, the day will come when one of you must be the future king. The burdens (负担) of being a king are very heavy. To find out which of you is better able to bear (承担) them cheerfully, I am sending you together to a far corner of the kingdom. One of my advisors there will place equal burdens on your shoulders (肩膀). My crown will one day go to the one who returns first bearing his burden like a king should.”
In a spirit of the friendly competition, the brothers set out together. Soon they met a weak and old woman struggling under a heavy weight. One of the boys suggested that they stop to help her. The other protested: “We have a burden of our own to worry about. Let us be on our way.”
So the second son hurried on while the other stayed behind to help the woman with her load. On his journey to the kingdom, the same young man found others who needed help. A blind man who needed help to get home; a lost child whom he carried back to her worried parents; a farmer whose wagon (马车) needed a strong shoulder to push it out of the mud.
Eventually he did reach his father’s advisor. There he gained his own burden and started home with it safely on his shoulders.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
When he arrived back at the palace, his father and brother met him at the gate. He couldn’t wait to rush to them and gave them a big hug. However, a flood of anxiety washed over him. In spite of lots of help he had given the people in need, he was still concerned his father would blame him for his returning too late. He was about to explain when his father said to him with a contented smile, “You are the future king. I am really proud of you.” Hearing this, his brother couldn’t hide his inner embarrassment and said in disbelief, “I told Father the burden was too heavy to carry. How did you manage it alone?”
Paragraph 2:
The future king replied thoughtfully. “I suppose when I helped others carry their burdens, I found the strength to carry my own.” On hearing what the future king said, the brother suddenly understood why his brother was better able to be the owner of the crown. By helping others, he managed to bear the heavy weight. Just as the saying goes, “Rose given, fragrance in hand.” Actually, helping others is helping ourselves.

A. Driving to the campus. B. Studying in the library together.
C. Eating lunch together on campus. D. Attending meeting s for the school club.

A. Telling stories. B. Giving reasons.
C. Referring to theories. D. Making comparisons.

On his journey to the kingdom the same young man found others who needed help. A blind man who needed help to get home; a lost child whom he carried back to her worried parents; a farmer whose wagon (马车) needed a strong shoulder to push it out of the mud.
Eventually he did reach his father’s advisor. There he gained his own burden and started home with it safely on his shoulders.
