Being misunderstood can make us feel small and uncomfortable. But in fact, what makes us great can be born from being misunderstood. I finally understood the point of being misunderstood.
One summer day, I filled an exercise book with different raindrop shapes in order to prove that the way a rainbow (彩虹) worked was impossible. And all I could prove was that rainbows were unbelievable. However, every second day a shower would mock me with another rainbow. My teacher thought I simply tried to make him look like a fool, so I was punished. Actually, I wasn’t trying to mock my teacher. I just wanted to find out how rainbows worked.
It’s hard when you are misunderstood. We have all been there, said things too quickly with too little thought. Those who hear our words don’t want to understand our thoughts. And people judge (判断) our actions without trying to understand the background behind the decisions.
We see the impossible and we want to know who, how, where or what. The search drives us, and we question, we look harder, and we trouble those people around us with endless details of the things we see. Sometimes, your opinion of something impossible can’t be seen by others. As a result, we are slowly taught to doubt what we see, even to the point we doubt ourselves. But in our opinion, our voice matters. And we believe our actions are important and the things we see are worth seeing. We cannot bear to be told our actions are wrong and we cannot bear to be told we are blind, and that what we see is not there. In fact, it doesn’t make us feel good. Having got the point of being misunderstood, I learned to let it go and felt much better.
61. Why was the writer punished in his school that summer?
A. He lost his exercise book.
B. He had a fight with his classmates.
C. His teacher found him trouble others.
D. His teacher thought he treated him as a fool.

A. 钦佩 B. 嘲弄 C. 包容 D. 模仿
63. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How people hear our words.
B. Why misunderstanding happens.
C. How people judge our actions.
D. What background means for decisions.
64. What causes us to explore more when we see the impossible?
A. The search for answers. B. The lesson from mistakes.
C. The idea of doubting ourselves. D. The need to get endless details.
65. What does the writer think of being misunderstood?
A. Funny. B. Boring. C. Acceptable. D. Unbelievable.

Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response (反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means to apologize (道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps (碰撞) into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict (冲突). So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn't always mean exactly what you think.
51. According to the text, “saying sorry” is a cultural expression in ________.
A. the USA B. the UK C. the PRC D. the UN
52. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. It was really cute. Later that day, as I helped Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how you didn’t consider this level of extra (额外的) care when you brought home a furry (毛茸茸的) new family member.
When we got Skyler, my husband and I had only been married for a few years. She was only one month old. She was house-trained in no time. We took her on hikes, and we were amazed by her energy. If we took off running toward the end of a field, she would have already crossed the finish line before we had even made it halfway. On walks, whenever we turned the corner onto our street, she pulled hard on her leash (狗链) to race toward home. She had made us laugh endlessly and had comforted me countless times.
But it is hard. It is sad to see this once-strong dog have a difficult time walking up the front steps. Now, she is 14 years old. Over the past few years, we have had to give up on taking certain family trips because we wouldn’t have been able to take good care of Skyler. My husband spends hours each week making special food for her that helps to control her heart problems. And I always have to sit in the back of the car whenever she travels with us because Skyler needs help getting comfortable, even though I may get carsick as a result.

Chen Jiaorong, 27, is one of them. She started stooping in June 2022 when she found that many people were letting go of things hardly used. After that, she often “hunted treasures” in her free time. She has been walking along the streets in downtown area once or twice a week, looking around and picking up “garbage”. Now, her small apartment holds things redesigned from the idle goods she collected, including tables, chairs and clothing.
“Some say stooping means collecting rubbish,” Chen said. “But for me, it’s about making the best use of things. “That’s why she introduces the trend to others. Sometimes Chen also puts stickers on the goods that she doesn’t need and posts pictures of them on social media, guiding others to pick them up from the streets. The videos she posted online draw much attention and many young people join her.
Huang Xiaohe from Kunming No. 1 High School also loves stooping. The 12-year-old has few chances to go stooping in her city, she often looks for idle goods around school. Then, she cleans and redesigns them, turning them into fun things at home. The cotton from a toy bear dresses a lamp and old facial masks are used to make clothes for her dolls. “I believe that any waste can be turned into treasures,” said Huang.
Nan Zheng, a 35-year-old environmentalist says that stooping is more than the physical act of picking up things from the streets. He created an app called “Grecycle” where people can give away or take unwanted items for free. “We can let more people know about stooping as an interesting and fun thing to do. Gradually, this can also be about helping others.”
Accordingly, if you are active in reducing waste, you might give stooping a try. Stooping is really an action to fight over-buying.

For the first thirteen years of my life, I thought science was boring. It was all about memorizing (熟记) facts: the order of the planets, the names of clouds, the parts of a cell. So I decided to become a novelist when I grew up. I spent all my free time reading and writing.
However, everything changed in my first year of middle school. As a person who liked to keep things organized, I fell in love with the periodic table (元素周期表). And it led me to basic physics and chemistry. Science still meant memorizing facts, but suddenly, they were much more interesting facts.
Then I had a problem. I wasn’t that interested in becoming a novelist any more, and I really liked science. But at my school, all the best science students went on to be doctors. I was always afraid of blood. Become a doctor? That was the last thing I wanted to do!
But at the same time, I developed an interest in the environment. A group of students in the year above mine had started an environmental club. Once a week, I went to school extra early in the morning to attend their club meetings.
In the summer of that year, we attended some courses on climate change. The climatologists (气候学家) talked about many different things. I took notes in a tiny notebook as fast as I could. For the first time, I learned about the use of the periodic table. It brought me joy and excitement, and I dreamed of becoming a climatologist myself.

Henry was a poor university student, but he wanted to buy a car. “If I can buy one really cheap that works,” he thought, “I will save money on bus tickets. Then I can spend more in the restaurants I like.”
He spent a day searching for the cheapest car in the second-hand car yards. Finally he found one for $250. The car was really old and the paint was badly peeled, but it worked. “It’s got a good engine,” the salesman said, “and the gearbox is OK. Forget everything else.”

On a video online, fish-shaped lanterns move in the air as if they are swimming in the water. A group of teenagers in Shenzhen Yangang Middle School brought life to the fish lanterns with built-in AI system.
“The fish-lantern dance is a long-standing tradition in Shenzhen. Dancers carry lanterns and try to make them move like real fish in their performance, and this calls for lots of practice,” says Jiang Jiahan, one of the lantern’s inventors. So his team wants to lower the threshold with an AI-driven fish lantern that can move on its own, so that more people can take part in the traditional performance art.
Tan Wenbo, another inventor, explains that a sensor (传感器) on the head of a lantern will identify (识别) different pictures on the screen and give the result to a circuit board (电路板). The board, connected with two small motors (发动机) on the lantern’s head and tail, will drive the paper fish to perform different moves. According to Jiang, the rules of the moves follow the habits of real fish. “If a fish sees its food, it may dance more often in excitement. If it finds a good place to hide among, it feels relaxed and will move lower.”
“The old lantern model was made of card paper, but it weighed too much,” Jiang says. Then he made the latest lanterns with xuan paper (a classic paper used for Chinese painting) and iron wiring (接线).
Jiang says this experience makes him want to learn more about AI in the future. So does Tan.

When we first moved here, we didn’t have a garden. Mike and I talked about making a large vegetable garden somewhere in our yard, but we couldn’t agree on where. Before we went ahead and dug up the grass, we spent some time thinking about where it would work best. At last, we chose an old sandbox in our front yard to become our garden.
We dreamed about a lively garden with lots of vegetables. We asked many people what we should do to turn this sandbox into a space, and then plants could grow in it. And they gave us lots of ideas. My sister was the most knowledgeable, so we listened mostly to her. At first, Mike made a wood fence (栅栏) and I painted it with the kids. We chose a darker color because it would fit our light grey house.
Next, Mike dug 17 holes. Then we filled them with soil. It was still too cold to plant anything, so for days I just stared out of the window at these holes. To me, it looked much too untidy. I advised to fill those holes back and dig new ones. This time we ended up with 10. Much better.
Over the next few weeks, I worked on getting everything planted in my garden. I started by planting green onions. But I was too excited and planted them too early. Right away it was clear that they weren’t going to survive. I had to give them up and try something else. Then my next-door neighbor gave me red roses to put in my garden. A few days later we went to a greenhouse and came back not with green onions but peppers, tomatoes and so on. Clearly the vegetable and flower garden was slowly becoming our dream garden. Oh well!
I love the way it turned out. This garden will always remind me of my sister.

(2024年福建省泉州市中考一模D篇)

I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. It was really cute. Later that day, as I helped Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how you didn’t consider this level of extra (额外的) care when you brought home a furry (毛茸茸的) new family member.

Now, eleven years have passed, and this dream has come true. I’m deeply interested in the climate system. I don’t think my job will ever be boring.

Born and raised in Chicago, Brian first visited China in 1984, then received a scholarship (奖学金) from the Chinese government and came to study in Beijing. During his stay, he fell in love with Chinese culture and wanted to share it with others.

Oh well!
