Thank you all for being here today. For those who don’t know me, I’m Paul, the eldest son of Mary’s five children. Today I’m here, to celebrate Mary and everything she’s achieved, on her 60th birthday. Mom was born in England on October 16th, 1961. She returned there, aged 16, to begin nursing training, which she said was the only thing she ever wanted to do. My grandmother always said that, even as a small child, she spent most of her time forcing her two brothers to play “patient” in her “hospital”, and in her school reports, teachers always commented on how caring and capable she was. She passed her training with excellent performance and started her career as a registered nurse. She married my dad, Eric, in 1981. I arrived soon after, followed by twins John and Michael, our sister Belinda, and finally, George. As a mother, she was endlessly kind and a huge amount of fun! And she hasn’t changed. Now that she’s retired, she enjoys traveling, playing with her three granddaughters, and has even taken up flying lessons!

A “slow travel” guide to one of Britain’s most beloved landscapes, this newly updated book remains the only stand-alone guide to the region. Written by Yorkshire resident, outdoors enthusiast and travel writer Mike Bagshaw, it takes in sandy beaches, woodlands and chalk grasslands. It has information on walking and cycle paths, as well as wildlife-watching areas. Whale-and dolphin-watching tours are also covered.
Wild Isles
Harper Collins,£25.
This rich photographic guide accompanies the new BBC documentary series of the same name, which sees Sir David Attenborough celebrate the wonders of British wildlife across a range of habitats. Written by natural history journalist Patrick Barkham and producer Alastair Fothergill, each chapter of the book focuses on a particular kind of wild space, from our wide variety of grasslands to our ocean shores, woodlands and remaining forests.
Springwatch
BBC Books,£18.99.
Explore the UK’s richest regions for wildlife with 100 walks chosen for their unique plants and animals. Written by Wales-based travel journalist Luke Waterson, with a foreword(前言)by Chris Packham, this new guide is published together with the current Springwatch BBC TV series and features walks that best reveal the diversity of British nature.

Donatella Flick was the winner of the competition’s 17th part. She wanted to find young conductors at the beginning of their careers and make sure they had tools to enable them not to give up until they succeed.
“It’s so important to train young talents and give them the opportunities to succeed,” she said, reflecting on founding the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition 33 years ago.
That was why, she emphasized, the prize went beyond the cash award — which was a healthy £15,000 — and offered the winner the opportunity to assist the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) for a year. They could work with some of the world’s finest conductors and lay foundations for a successful conducting career.
Flick was born Princess Donatella Missikoff. Since 1917, Flick has successfully built a career and reputation as an artist. She now organizes charitable foundations and project all over the world.
With the Competition, she was motivated by finding more talents in unexpected places — before diversity and inclusion spread through different industries as new “buzzwords”.
“One way to do this was to broaden the range for applications, so we opened up entries to conductors from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland in 2018. Since then, I’ve been very pleased to see conductors from those countries reach the list of competitors,” she said. “One of the major changes that I’ve been very happy to see is that more women are applying for the Competition now than when we started in 1990, and I hope this continues in future competitions.”
In view of the fact that only four of the 20 conductors — that was 20 percent — who qualified for the 2023 competition were women, it was clear that a gender imbalance persisted.
“I think we have a new generation of female conductors emerging, and I would deeply encourage them to apply to the Competition if they’re at the start of their careers,” Flick said, still hopeful.
24. Why did Flick found the Conducting Competition?
A. To become famous. B. To continue her family tradition.
C. To train the future stars of conducting. D. To promote the finest conductors’ careers.
25. How did Flick help young conductors?
A. By introducing them to some world-class orchestras.
B. By supporting them financially.
C. By equipping them with conducting tools.
D. By providing more opportunities for them.
26. What major change does the Conducting Competition bring?
A. The range for applications is broadened every year.
B. More females intend to take part in it now.
C. Youths worldwide engage themselves in conducting.
D. Males account for 80% of the qualified conductors.
27. Which of the following can best describe Flick?
A. Kind and ambitious. B. Generous and brave.
C. Sensible and creative. D. Energetic and productive.
C 25. D 26. B 27. A

Sharing could be giving somebody a gift, helping someone by donating some money, sharing your food with a poor and hungry person. It can simply mean giving some time to help others.
When you receive something from others, it makes you happy. On the other hand, when you give something to others, it makes both you and the receiver happy. From the outside, sharing seems to give away a part of your time, resource or space to others. But when you share something with others, you can get all kinds of positivities inside and outside yourself. It can enhance your mood, reduce your stress level, decrease your blood pressure, and have a long-term effect on your life and longevity (长寿).
Sharing makes you bigger inside and in your society as well. Take knowledge and love for example, the more you share, the more you get. If you make sharing a part of your life and practice it in your daily life, you will get more out of your life directly or indirectly, like help, support, love, cooperation, and a lot more from others even at a time when you are not expecting it. This is why it makes you bigger and happier when you share something with others.
We are living in a global village where each one of us is related to each other in some way or other. When you volunteer, you give away your time or wealth or knowledge to a person or a group of people. You will realize that you are not alone in the big world. As a result, you won’t feel left out in your society. Sharing advances cooperation and social connection. To live harmoniously, we should learn and practice sharing our life with others. Sharing could be one of the ways to build an ideal society.
So, what are you waiting for? Start giving a part of yourself to others and see how your life becomes more beautiful, positive, lovely and satisfying. Giving makes you better, bigger, and brighter inside you, in your society, and even in the entire global village.
28. What can be learned about sharing from paragraph 2?
A. It only benefits the receivers.
B. It takes a lot of time and energy.
C. It has nothing to do with emotion.
D. It is good for physical and mental health.
29. Why does the author mention knowledge and love in paragraph 3?
A. To say what is important in life. B. To tell us how to find happiness.
C. To show sharing makes us better. D. To remind us how to live happily.
30. What makes volunteering very important in today’s world?
A. Greatly improved awareness. B. Highly developed technology.
C. Great dependence on each other. D. Convenient means of transportation.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To inspire the readers to share.
B. To introduce an instructive book.
C. To give the definition of sharing.
D. To make others better and happier.
D 29. C 30. C 31. A

As temperatures soar electric bills often go through the roof. That’s because people tend to turn on their air conditioners during the long, hot summer months.
It’s been predicted that by 2050 about 75 percent of the world’s homes could have air conditioners. If that’s true, the energy required to cool buildings will double. For that reason, researchers continue to look for solutions to keep air-conditioner usage to a minimum. Some innovations are being used already or are in the process of being developed. Certain building materials can feel cooler because of their ability to absorb heat and release it slowly. Other buildings use water cooling systems to cool them. However, these aren’t the only methods. Science has a few more tricks up its sleeve.
Researchers at Purdue University have developed the world’s whitest paint. This paint can keep a building’s exterior surface cooler than the surrounding temperature. On hot days, walls absorb heat and often become 10 to 20 degrees Celsius hotter than the air around them. But walls painted with Purdue’s white paint reflect 98.1 percent of the heat and send it back into space. This creates a cooling effect.
Purdue professor Xiulin Ruan believes that the super-white paint could have a more powerful cooling effect than many home air conditioners. Researchers hope to have the paint on the market in five to 10 years.
Yi Zheng of Northeastern University has created a “cooling paper”. This material reflects the sun’s rays while pulling heat out of a building’s interior, and the paper can be recycled. He and his team discovered that the paper helps bring down a room’s temperature by about 6 degrees Celsius. Zheng hopes that the cooling paper will someday be used on roofs and within building materials.
Now and in the future, perhaps some of these energy-efficient methods will make it easier to beat the heat.
32. Why does the author mention the air conditioners at the beginning of the passage?
A. To describe a fact. B. To support an idea.
C To provide examples. D. To introduce the topic.
33. What do we know about Purdue’s white paint?
A. It has been on the market.
B. It is the world’s coolest paint.
C. Walls painted with it reflect most of the heat.
D. It can keep the whole building’s surface cooler.
34. What can we infer according to Yi Zheng?
A. The surface of a buildings is better covered with paper.
B. Buildings will be built mostly with cooling paper someday.
C. The cooling paper will be practical and eco-friendly building materials.
D. The cooling paper can bring down a room’s temperature more than air conditioners.
35. Which of the following would be the best title?
A. Purdue’s White Paint: A New Material to Cool Buildings
B. Cool Buildings: Innovative Ways to Keep Buildings Cool
C. Cool Building Materials: Solutions to Fight against Climate Change
D. Future Air Conditioners: New Energy-efficient Methods to Beat the Heat
D 33. C 34. C 35. B

根据第一段“As temperatures soar, electric bills often go through the roof. That’s because people tend to turn on their air conditioners during the long, hot summer months.(随着气温的飙升,电费经常飞涨。这是因为在漫长而炎热的夏季,人们往往会打开空调)”以及第二段“It’s been predicted that by 2050 about 75 percent of the world’s homes could have air conditioners. If that’s true, the energy required to cool buildings will double. For that reason, researchers continue to look for solutions to keep air-conditioner usage to a minimum. Some innovations are being used already or are in the process of being developed.(据预测,到2050年,世界上75%的家庭将拥有空调。如果这是真的,冷却建筑物所需的能量将翻倍。因此,研究人员继续寻找将空调使用量降至最低的解决方案。一些创新已经在使用或正在开发过程中)”后文则是具体介绍了几种方法,所以作者在文章开头提到空调是为了介绍主题。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Researchers at Purdue University have developed the world’s whitest paint. This paint can keep a building’s exterior surface cooler than the surrounding temperature. On hot days, walls absorb heat and often become 10 to 20 degrees Celsius hotter than the air around them. But walls painted with Purdue’s white paint reflect 98.1 percent of the heat and send it back into space.(普渡大学的研究人员开发出了世界上最白的油漆。这种涂料可以使建筑物的外表面温度低于周围的温度。在炎热的天气里,墙壁会吸收热量,通常会比周围的空气温度高10到20摄氏度。但是,用普渡大学的白色涂料粉刷的墙壁反射了98.1%的热量,并将其送回了太空)”可知,普渡大学的白色涂料粉刷的墙壁反射了98.1%的热量,即能反射大部分的热量。故选C项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Yi Zheng of Northeastern University has created a “cooling paper”. This material reflects the sun’s rays while pulling heat out of a building’s interior, and the paper can be recycled. He and his team discovered that the paper helps bring down a room’s temperature by about 6 degrees Celsius. Zheng hopes that the cooling paper will someday be used on roofs and within building materials.(东北大学的Yi Zheng发明了一种“冷却纸”。这种材料可以反射太阳光线,同时从建筑物内部吸收热量,而且这种纸可以回收利用。他和他的团队发现,这种纸有助于将房间温度降低约6摄氏度。郑希望这种冷却纸有一天能被用于屋顶和建筑材料)”可知,这种“冷却纸”不但能降温还能回收利用,所以是实用且环保的建筑材料。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“It’s been predicted that by 2050 about 75 percent of the world’s homes could have air conditioners. If that’s true, the energy required to cool buildings will double. The first time I went to a playground in Berlin, I was surprised. All the German parents were huddled together, drinking coffee, not paying attention to their children who were hanging off a wooden dragon 20 feet above a sand pit. Contrary to stereotypes(模式化观念),most German parents I’ve met are the opposite of strict.___36___. Those parents at the park weren’t ignoring their children; they were trusting them. Here are a few surprising things Berlin ’s parents do:
Don't push reading. Berlin ’s kindergartens don’t emphasize academics. In fact, teachers and other parents discouraged me from teaching my children to read.___37___. But even in first grade, academics aren’t pushed very hard. Our grade school provides a half-day of instruction interrupted by two outdoor breaks.
___38___ A note came home from school along with my excited second grader. They were doing a project on fire. Would I let her light candles and perform experiments with. matches? Together we lit candles and burned things, safely. It was brilliant.
Let children go almost everywhere alone. Most grade school kids walk without their parents to school and around their neighborhoods. Some even take the subway alone.___39___of course, but they usually focus on traffic.,not abductions(绑架).
Take the kids outside every day. According to a German saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”The value of outside time is promoted in the schools.___40___No matter how cold and grey it gets, and in Berlin it gets pretty cold, parents still bundle their kids up and take them to the park, or send them out on their own.
A. Encourage kids to play with fire
B. Inspire children to go out for leisure
C. German parents are concerned about safety
D. It's also obvious on Berlin ' s numerous playgrounds
E Kindergarten was a time for play and social learning
F. They place a high value on independence and responsibility
G. I was told it was something special that the kids learn together when they start grade school
F 37. E 38. A 39. C 40. B
In fact, teachers and other parents discouraged me from teaching my children to read.(事实上,老师和其他家长都不鼓励我教孩子读书)可知,作者不被鼓励去教孩子读书,E选项(幼儿园的时间是玩耍和社会学习的时间)顺承上文,且选项中的kindergarten和本段第一句内容相呼应,故选E。
They were doing a project on fire. Would I let her light candles and perform experiments with matches?(他们正在做一个点火的项目。
根据下文的of course, but they usually focus on traffic, not abductions.(但他们通常关注交通,而不是绑架)可知,C选项(德国父母很关心孩子的安全)中提及的safety与下文的交通安全相呼应,故选C。
Take the kids outside every day.(每天都带孩子去户外玩)可知,B选项中的go out for leisure和主旨句中的outside相呼应,且语义(鼓励孩子们出去休闲)承接上下文,故选B。

It was two days before Christmas and young Maggie was told again that Paxton would not be returning.
Maggie’s father had found the weak deer a year ago and they had taken care of him. Maggie’s father, a vet, tended to the deer’s injuries and bandaged his foot. Maggie noticed that he had markings above his eyes that resembled the sun with rays of light. She named him Paxton and promised to take care of him.
Maggie couldn’t sleep that night and kept checking on Paxton from her window. The next morning, she rushed to the house to see Paxton. Paxton was still timid around her, but with time, he started eating carrots from her hand. Every morning before school, Maggie would feed Paxton.
Maggie wanted to keep Paxton, but her father explained that he was a wild animal and needed to be released after his foot was healed. Mr. Dotson could see his daughter’s affection for the little deer. That scared him, because he knew Maggie would never be able to say goodbye. So when Paxton’s foot had been healed, Mr. Dotson came home early one afternoon to set Paxton free. Maggie was overcome with sadness and called out to Paxton every day, hoping he would hear her.
In time, though, Maggie did come to understand that wild animals, even little deer, need to be in their natural habitat. But that didn’t change how much Maggie cared for and missed Paxton.
One day, as it started snowing, Maggie stood by a pond behind their house, feeling upset. The pond hadn’t frozen that winter, as the weather was warmer than usual. Mr. Dotson felt guilty about having not been more supportive of his daughter’s belief that she would see Paxton again. Although he didn’t want to give her false hope, he realized that no longer mattered, since Maggie was hurting and he wanted to help.
As Mr. Dotson walked outside to greet his daughter, he carried a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) with him. He and Maggie would spend the next couple of hours in the woods, where they searched for deer tracks in the newly fallen snow. As Mr. Dotson had expected, their search came up empty.
“I’m sorry we didn’t have better luck, Maggie.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As they hiked through the snow towards home, Maggie’s heart felt heavy. She couldn’t shake the disappointment of Paxton not returning to her. As Mr. Dotson and Maggie reached the edge of the woods, Maggie turned to take one last look at the place. At that moment, something caught her eye. A ray of sunlight reflected off the snow-covered ground, leading her eyesight deeper into the forest. There, standing among the trees, was Paxton, his sun-like markings standing out against the snow. Maggie’s heart skipped a beat as she watched him, a mix of joy and longing, filling her chest.
“Look! it’s Paxton!” Maggie shouted, her voice filled with excitement. “Look, Maggie, he seems happy and free in its natural habitat.” Maggie nodded. She knew Paxton was where he belonged, even if it meant they couldn’t be together. She realized her love for Paxton would always remain in her heart, no matter where he traveled. With a final wave to Paxton, Maggie turned to her father. As they walked towards home, Maggie carried with her a newfound wisdom. She understood that love isn’t always about possessing, but about cherishing and allowing others to follow their own paths. And she knew that the memories she shared with Paxton would forever be an invaluable part of her Christmas magic.

Four New Nature Travel Books
British Woodland
Ebury Publishing£22
Discover the secret world of our trees with this book by bushcraft and survival expert Ray Mears, who takes us on a journey from the planting of the very first seedling in Britain a thousand years ago to the present day. The book looks to our ancestors to show how man’s hand is critical in shaping woodland.

As temperatures soar, electric bills often go through the roof.
C. To provide examples.
C The cooling paper will be practical and eco-friendly building materials.
D Future Air Conditioners: New Energy-efficient Methods to Beat the Heat
