M: Welcome to our online audio guide to the Johnston Museums. I’m Robert Antler, a guide and a father of three kids. I’m here to share some tips with you on how to visit the museums with your kids. First, you should know that the Johnston is not one, but six museums. All the museums are free and you can find the opening times on its website. Second, you should start your trip in the early afternoons. If you go at other times, the museums are more crowded. Because parking in the area is difficult, you’d better use the subway. The city bus is another option, but you should check out the timetable in advance, because it changes frequently, due to construction on the routes. Finally, to help you plan your trip, you can watch a ten-minute video about the museums on its website. Also, you can talk with your kids about the things you’ll see before coming. Okay, so after you arrive, your first stop has to be the Johnston Information Center. Then, I think you should visit whichever exhibitions your children want to see.

New York City has many remarkable parks and open spaces that are perfect for hanging out in warm weather. Here are four of our favorite places to take a scenic walk, plus where to eat nearby.
Louis Valentino, Jr. Park
Don’t let all of the factories fool you — Louis Valentino, Jr. Park has the best view of the Statue of Liberty. When you get hungry, stop by Red Hook Lobster Pound for mayo-coated lobster (龙虾). Sit at one of the cafe’s first come, first served outdoor tables, or eat on the waterfront.
Riverside Park
Stretching 4 miles from 72nd to 158th St, Riverside Park is perfect for hanging out along the Hudson River, enjoying beautiful views of New Jersey. If walking the whole way isn’t your thing, there’s a bike path too. Daily Provisions offers fantastic sandwich choices, like juicy chicken and smoked bacon.
Central Park
There are many reasons to walk through Central Park this spring: historic landmarks, great bird watching spots, and hanging out with friends. And while these are enjoyable activities, they’re even better with a pastrami sandwich from Pastrami Queen.
Ridgewood Reservoir
At Ridgewood Reservoir, you’ll find an easy hiking spot with a peaceful nature preserve and skyline views of Manhattan. After hiking, head to Rolo’s for various sandwich options. It has outdoor tables but no heaters, so you can take everything to go if it’s too cold out.
21. What is the best spot for enjoying views of the Statue of Liberty?
A. Louis Valentino, Jr. Park. B. Ridgewood Reservoir.

Once the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, robots and robotic technology are now used in many aspects of daily life, ranging from manufacturing to medicine and everything in between. While humanity is still far from having robot servants at home, robots are commonly used on production lines in factories, and even for specific movements during operation.
Recently, one Estonian company decided to repurpose (改变……的用途) its technology for a reason that’s beneficial for the environment. Robot manufacturer Milrem, which previously produced autonomous tanks, partnered with the University of Tartu to develop robot foresters that can plant and care for trees.
The decision to create autonomous foresters came after Milrem realized that its technology, which had been developed for military use , could be useful in other areas. “We started looking into what else we could do with these unmanned robots”, Mart Noorma, director at Milrem, told Research Estonia. “Together with our partners at universities and public offices, we realized that we could be helpful in automating many industries.”
The robots, which resemble mini tanks , operate in pairs. One robot works as a planter , putting down as many as 380 young trees in as little as six hours. During the planting stage, the robot records the exact location of each young tree. The other robot follows its path, cutting vegetation and cutting brush, so that the newly planted trees can thrive.
To navigate their surroundings the robots use LiDAR and GPS systems. LiDAR uses laser technology to create a three-dimensional geometric map of the environment. Interesting Engineering reported that the robots also use high resolution camera systems to fill in the gaps around obstacles (障碍) and ensure the map’s accuracy.
The efficiency and speed of these tree-planting robots give them the high potential to help reverse (逆转) deforestation, a critical issue affecting the planet.
24. Why did Milrem decide to repurpose its technology?
A. To make more money. B. To help in medicine.
C. To create a big brand. D. To protect the environment.
25. How many young trees can a robot plant in an hour?
A. About 50. B. About 63.
C. About 190. D. About 380.
26. What can we infer from the fifth paragraphs?
A. LiDAR makes it easier to identify the trees.
B. The robots will improve the environment around the plants.
C. The map’s accuracy results from high resolution camera systems.
D. The tree planting robots are bound to be widely used soon.
27. What may be the author’s attitude towards robot foresters?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear. D. Disapproving.
D 25. B 26. C 27. A

C
I love watching football games and couldn’t help but notice how many footballers chew gum while playing! I always thought of it as a choking danger, so why would they risk it?
When we chew something, the receptors in our mouth that sense taste and pressure from the jaw movements start firing and sending electrical signals to the brain. These electrical nervous system signals move to the brain, which works to understand these signals. This added brain activity places the mind in a more attentive state, which is why focus and concentration are improved.
Additionally, chewing gum has been reported to decrease stress and anxiety levels. The brain activity stimulated (刺激) by chewing gum occurs mainly in the prefrontal cortex, the front part of the brain responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation. When chewing gum, the prefrontal cortex is activated, leading to the release of a “feel-good” neurotransmitter called dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is known to promote a sense of pleasure and reward, helping to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety.
So does this mean that the harder you chew, the better the focus levels? Yes…to an extent. Chewing harder gum does boost attention more than softer gum. Similarly, chewing flavored gum is better for cognitive (认知) functioning, as it activates more receptors in the mouth than chewing flavorless gum.
With lower stress levels and better focus, athletes have better decision-making abilities in the middle of the game. It also helps them keep their anxiety levels in check during big games. Chewing gum does give your body a little boost, lifting up your spirits. That explains why athletes prefer chewing gum while playing a sport. But for the sake of safety, you’d better chew just one piece to reduce the choking risk.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. Chewing gum during games.
B. Suffering from sports injuries.
C. Swallowing gum for pleasure.
D. Choking while watching games.
29. How can chewing help improve focus?
A. By affecting digestive system.
B. By releasing high pressure.
C. By adding muscle strength.
D. By stimulating the brain.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Gum proves a healthy snack for athletes.
B. Chewing gum benefits mental health.
C Dopamine contributes to better focus.
D. Brain activity helps relieve anxiety.
31. What is the author’s attitude to chewing gum?
A. Hopeful. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
A 29. D 30. B 31. B
根据划线词前面的句子“I love watching football games and couldn’t help but notice how many footballers chew gum while playing!(我喜欢看足球比赛,而且忍不住注意到有多少足球运动员在比赛时嚼口香糖!)”以及“I always thought of it as a choking danger(我一直认为这是一种窒息的危险。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中“When we chew something, the receptors in our mouth that sense taste and pressure from the jaw movements start firing and sending electrical signals to the brain. (当我们咀嚼东西时,我们嘴里的感受器负责感知颚部运动的味道和压力,并向大脑发送电波信号。)”以及本段中“These electrical nervous system signals move to the brain, which works to understand these signals. This added brain activity places the mind in a more attentive state, which is why focus and concentration are improved.( 这些电子神经系统信号传递到大脑,大脑负责理解这些信号。这种增加的大脑活动使大脑处于更专注的状态,这就是为什么注意力和集中力得到提高。)”可知,嚼东西时口腔内的感受器会向大脑发送信号,这种大脑活动使大脑更加警觉,从而提高了注意力和集中力。故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“Additionally, chewing gum has been reported to decrease stress and anxiety levels. (此外,据报道,嚼口香糖可以减少压力和焦虑水平。)”以及“When chewing gum, the prefrontal cortex is activated, leading to the release of a “feel-good” neurotransmitter called dopamine(多巴胺). Dopamine is known to promote a sense of pleasure and reward, helping to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety.(嚼口香糖时,前额皮质被激活,导致释放一种叫做多巴胺的“感觉良好”的神经递质。众所周知,多巴胺能促进愉悦感和奖励感,有助于缓解压力和焦虑感。)”可知,第三段主要讨论了嚼口香糖如何通过激活大脑的前额叶皮层,释放多巴胺来降低压力和焦虑水平,这对心理健康有益。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“With lower stress levels and better focus, athletes have better decision-making abilities in the middle of the game. It also helps them keep their anxiety levels in check during big games. Chewing gum does give your body a little boost, lifting up your spirits. (由于压力水平较低,注意力较集中,运动员在比赛中有更好的决策能力。这也有助于他们在大型比赛期间控制焦虑水平。嚼口香糖确实能给你的身体一点刺激,提振你的精神。)”可知,作者在最后一段中提到,嚼口香糖可以提升情绪,提升运动员的注意力以及控制焦虑水平。这表明作者对嚼口香糖持支持态度。故选B。
D
Depending on your view, the recorder is an instrument of “incredible functions” or a tool of annoyance that has bothered primary schools for too many generations. But now, it faces extinction, with one of the UK’s top music schools reporting an 80% decline in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years.
The instrument’s future is so imperiled that the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to bring it back to life again so it does not leave the stage. The ERTA argues that if the recorder was good enough for the Beatles, it has a place in modern music today.
Tom Redmond, the principal of Chetham’s school of music in Manchester, said only three of its pupils practised the recorder, compared with 15 a decade ago. “More pupils were taking up the piano or other instruments,” said Redmond. “The ones that became really popular are the ones students spend more time playing alone. With the instruments being more socially based, there has been a decline, just like the recorder.”
Redmond also said that this problem extended “beyond the recorder itself” and was a mirror of the future of music. “Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem, removing the recorder has a huge chain effect beyond just the instrument. You need these instruments to create the inspiration for music, and without that, there is less excitement to learn music,” he said.
Chris Orton, a recorder tutor and chair of the ERTA, is leading the fight against the instrument’s extinction. He said, “The recorder is increasingly overlooked by students, and yet it has a rich history and incredible attractions. As well as making beautiful sounds, it’s an accessible instrument in that it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it’s light and easy to carry.”
32. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. In danger. B. Full of hope. C. Out of memory. D. Beyond recognition.
33. What may result in a decrease of playing the recorder according to paragraph 3?
A. Students are less excited to learn it.
B. Its disadvantages outweigh its advantages.
C. It requires more cooperation with other instruments.
D. Students are more likely to play high-end instruments.
34. What can we infer from Redmond’s words?
A. Music education is essential for students.
B. The recorder shapes the future of music.
C. The recorder plays an important role in music.
D. Nature is a rich source of inspiration for musicians.
35. What does Orton think of the recorder?
A. It needs to be improved. B. It is inconvenient to play.
C. It is a priority for students. D. It deserves more attention.
A 33. C 34. C 35. D
根据第一段中“But now, it faces extinction, with one of the UK’s top music schools reporting an 80% decline in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years. (但现在,它面临灭绝,英国一所顶级音乐学校报告说,在过去10年里,演奏它的年轻人数量下降了80%。)”以及第二段划线词后“the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to bring it back to life again so it does not leave the stage. (欧洲竖笛教师协会正试图让它起死回生,这样它就不会离开舞台。)”可推知,“The instrument’s future is so imperilled”表达的意思是:竖笛的未来岌岌可危,imperilled意为“岌岌可危的,濒危的”,与in danger意思一致。故选A。
根据第三段中““More pupils were taking up the piano or other instruments,” said Redmond. “The ones that became really popular are the ones students spend more time playing alone. With the instruments being more socially based, there has been a decline, just like the recorder.” (雷德蒙德说:“更多的学生开始学习钢琴或其他器乐。真正受欢迎的乐器是那些学生花更多时间独自演奏的乐器。而需要与其他乐器进行更多的配合,像竖笛之类的乐器,普及度下降。”)”可知,竖笛需要与其他乐器进行配合,这导致演奏竖笛的人越来越少。故选C。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中Redmond的话“Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem, removing the recorder has a huge chain effect beyond just the instrument. You need these instruments to create the inspiration for music, and without that, there is less excitement to learn music (就像从生态系统中移除任何植物或动物一样,移除竖笛会产生巨大的连锁效应,而不仅仅是乐器本身。你需要这些乐器来创造音乐的灵感,没有这些,学习音乐就不那么兴奋了)”可知,雷德蒙德认为竖笛的缺失会产生连锁反应,会使创造音乐的灵感和学习的激情减少。由此推知,他认为竖笛在音乐中扮演了重要的角色。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Orton的话“The recorder is increasingly overlooked by students, and yet it has a rich history and incredible attractions. As well as making beautiful sounds, it’s an accessible instrument in that it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it’s light and easy to carry. (竖笛越来越被学生们所忽视,然而它有着丰富的历史和令人难以置信的吸引力。它不仅能发出美妙的声音,而且与其他木管乐器相比,它是一种容易接近的乐器,因为它的成本很低,而且它很轻,便于携带。)”可推知,克里斯·奥顿认为竖笛很重要,需要得到更多的关注。故选D。

C. Riverside Park. D. Central Park.
22. What makes Riverside Park an attractive destination?
A. It features a bike path for leisurely rides.
B. It provides various sandwich options at Rolo’s.
C. It is known for its iconic status and historic landmarks.
D. It provides a scenic walk with options for bird watching.
23. Where is this article most likely sourced from?
A. An online cooking advertisement.
B. A local New York City travel guide.
C. The lifestyle section of a local newspaper.
D. An official tourism design for New York City.

To navigate their surroundings, the robots use LiDAR and GPS systems.

C. Dopamine contributes to better focus.
D. Brain activity helps relieve anxiety.
31. What is the author’s attitude to chewing gum?
A. Hopeful. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.

Many people would like to watch sport matches. First, you need to know about audience manners.
Most sporting arenas (竞技场) have rules for spectators written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Applause is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, applaud warmly. If someone fails, your applause will help encourage them.
Applause is not welcome, however, while players need to keep their concentration. Various sports have various rules for the audience.
Enjoying artistic gymnastics silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. Snooker and table tennis courtside behavior includes a ban on flash photography. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centers.
To be a good spectator you should take time to learn the game-specific rules and related culture of each event.
