Lanterns (灯笼) have always been a symbol of China. During Lantern Festival, Chinese people usually hang red lanterns outside their doors. Families get together to celebrate the festival by watching beautiful lanterns at night.
Chinese lanterns first appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty ( 25 ~ 220 ) . With a history of more than 1,800 years, they are a perfect combination (结合) of Chinese painting, paper cutting, as well as the use of lighting.
There are many kinds of traditional lanterns, such as bamboo lanterns and pendant lanterns. The pictures on the lanterns can be different, including people, birds and flowers. Now more kinds of lanterns appear in festivals besides the traditional ones. More modern technology is used on making lanterns, so people can see lanterns with music, with colorful bulbs inside and so on. The shapes of the modern lanterns have changed a lot too. These shapes can be cartoon characters and Chinese zodiac animals.
However, today’s lanterns are also a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. They play an important role in people’s life. With Chinese culture sweeping the world, Chinese lanterns are even used as house decorations by many people who love Chinese culture. In some parts of the world, people use cloth and plastic (塑料) to make lanterns. The colors and patterns of lanterns have also changed. Many studies found that people who have hobbies are happier. Hobbies let people forget their worries — and, yes, have fun. Scientists suggest that a healthy mix of hobbies helps people in many ways.
Many studies have found that dancing three times a week improves balance (平衡) in older people. Dancing can exercise the brain, too. Music, on the other hand, can get most people relaxed and enjoy the moment with themselves. You can play the piano or just listen to your favorite songs.
It’s clear that exercise is going to be good for people physically. Even walking can help people keep fit. Getting out in nature is great for people’s bodies and it can also reduce their worries. Bird watching, for example, helps people get focused (集中) on the moment and then they could forget worries.
And a Swedish study found both gardening and making handwork could lower the risk of a heart problem by up to 30% among over -sixties. These kinds of physical activities can exercise people’s memory, too. One study of 2,805 people aged 60 or above in Australia found that gardening reduced the risk of dementia (痴呆) by 36%.
How can you choose the right hobby? Start with what you enjoyed in the past. Did you once play football? Take it up again or start something else, such as a local community running group. Why not take up one hobby and enjoy your life?

Is Technology Killing Free Time?
New surveys suggest that the technological tools we use to make our lives easier are killing our free time. We are working longer hours, taking fewer and shorter vacations. And we are more stressed (有压力的) than ever because of the increased use of email, mobile phones and the Internet.
People have thought that new laborsaving devices (节省劳力的设备) would free them from work and give them more time to enjoy the arts, keep up with the latest news and spend more time with friends and family. However, the tools that were supposed to free us have tied us to our work and study. It would seem that technology almost never does what we expect.
In the past, the lines between work and free time were much clearer. People were out of touch with their jobs once they left their offices. That’s no longer true in today’s highly competitive job market. Workers are expected to put in longer hours and to keep in touch almost at any time through mobile phones, email, or other communication devices.
Most people expect immediate replies to voice mail and email messages. Even college students have been tied to their desks as more and more people in the college increasingly do their work online.
This isn’t what technology was supposed to be doing for us. New technologies offer all kinds of benefits and chances. But when new tools make life more difficult and stressful rather than easier and more meaningful, then something has gone seriously wrong.

There are many reasons why I encourage people to travel, and I know that travelling will make one a better person.
I remember when I was travelling, I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me, my small town and home. Travelling all over the world, you will find that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring (探索) the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of things they do and how they live. Once you understand their ways, it will not be strange or scary. Often we read stories about other cultures in books. Only when we visit their areas do we find that those stories are something wrong.
On your journey, you will meet a lot of new friends. Talking to strangers is a great way to spend your time. Besides, learning about their lives is considered as another great way of spending your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to deal with problems and make many decisions along the way. When you travel, you will be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your special experiences could make an interesting book to read. It could be filled with your special memories.
Travelling around is a wonderful experience. If we all just travel a little more and share our experiences, travelling will make the world a better place.

If you want to help protect the environment and save the planet, we’ve got some easy ways of going green.
·Avoid food waste
Go green and know the importance of finishing your meals to avoid food waste. Do your bit to save the planet as well by planning your meals for the week, so you only buy what you need.
·Use reusable bottles
Earth Day is a great time for you to drink from reusable water bottles when you’re out and about. You should form good watersaving habits around the house, too.
·Try more plant-based meals
Try to eat less meat. It’s a surprisingly simple way we can all use to help save the planet. Try with one day a week to get you start, and then expand to more days when possible.
·Cut down on the air conditioner (空调)
Whenever you can, go green and open the window for some natural air. If you can’t live without your air conditioner, set it at between 25°C and 27°C for the most energyefficient (节能的) temperature.
·Wise up to (意识到) recycling
You don’t need us to tell you how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle. Becoming a less “throw away” society is a great message to pass on. Don’t throw away perfectly good things just because you are sick of them, or no longer use them. Instead, give them to others or list them on a free collection site online.
·Know more about nature
There’s no better way to know about the environment than by getting yourself outdoors and into nature! Whether it’s raining or sunny, you can know about the environment.
