Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I
came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully
focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert (警觉的), and hands move across the surface. Unlike
walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is
essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor
climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬崖), I saw how you could learn to read the rocks and develop a
vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone.
Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful “language”.
My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority. Guiding my
explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed
mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd
sees the mountain as a total environment and she praises the Caingorms as a place alive with plants,
rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock
climbing need not be a process of testing oneself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could
develop a person into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the world and our
place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday.
Working with gravity, geology ( 地 质 学 ), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual
relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the
rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.

Diving in the ocean, marine biologist Erika Woolsey has seen how coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are being
damaged by climate change. It has made her decide to find a way to share her experience —including
those who can’t easily explore the ocean.
Through her non-profit, The Hydrous, Woolsey is using virtual reality to bring the ocean to
everyone. Scientists, filmmakers and divers are taking people on immersive (沉浸式的) virtual dives,
attracting attention to reef damage and expecting action to protect our sea. About 25% of marine
species depend on coral reefs. However, climate change, pollution and overfishing have done harm to
around half the world’s shallow water coral reefs.
Twenty years of underwater exploration has given Woolsey a detailed understanding of the
dangerous situations facing reefs. “I’ve seen this first-hand shift. Healthy colourful coral reefs
become what look like the surface of the moon step by step,” Woolsey says.
It is through this experience that The Hydrous team set out to recreate with their award-winning
film Immerse. Intended to watch with a VR headset, viewers join Woolsey for a nine-minute guided
virtual dive on the coral reefs, immersed in a 360-degree underwater view.
They swim alongside sea turtles and sharks before witnessing the worsening of the reefs. The
experience often brings out strong feelings. “As soon as people take off that headset and look me in
the eye, they want to tell me a story about their ocean experience,” Woolsey says. “It’s that human
connection to our ocean that will solve our ocean problems.”
Woolsey hopes advances in camera technology will allow her team to take more and more people
to places in the ocean that are underexplored and places further away from human civilization. They
are developing a virtual experience that will put the people in the role of a marine biologist, carrying
out biodiversity surveys underwater, and even transporting the viewers to space to monitor global sea
surface temperatures.
28.Why did Erika Woolsey set up The Hydrous?
A.To collect money for ocean protection.
B.To let the public know about coral reefs better.
C.To help people enjoy the ocean’s beauty.
D.To encourage people to protect the ocean.

30.What can people know through the immersive dive?
A.The story about the ocean. B.The growth of coral reefs.
C.The connection with sea life. D.The way to protect the ocean.
31.What does Erika Woolsey hope to do in the future?
A.To bring more fun to people while diving.
B.To train talents for environmental protection.
C.To help people learn more about the ocean.
D.To discover more places that need protection.

Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at
the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a
central point. The device, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for
developing soft robots that can be used to navigate (导航) and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something
like the ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than
the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the
air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The
ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor
of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward
it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted
ring-bot meets a boundary- like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical
intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are
made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the
movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing
our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
32.Which of the following most affects the speed of the robot’s rolling?
A.The ribbon. B.The central axis.
C.The shape and material. D.The higher surface temperature.
33.How does the author introduce the new soft robots?
A.By explaining the robot’s working ways. B.By quoting viewers’ opinions.
C.By making some comparisons. D.By offering reasons and results.
34.What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots?
A.Unclear. B.Favourable. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr Roberts had
divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands
had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr
Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He
had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on
yourself.” Mr Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can
find, your courage?”
Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next
class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the
kitchen windows. Momma was baking.
Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a
moment, her hands still busy with the cake.
“Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your
class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with
newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place”
and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.

In Chinese culture, horses carry many best wishes and excellent qualities. On one hand, with its burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hooves, it’s always full of life. I wish you as strong and energetic as a horse. On the other hand, if compared to a horse, one is usually considered to be strong-willed and reliable. All in all, we use horse to represent a noble and loyal person.
I hope you like the gift and wish you a happy birthday.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
参考范文:
That was the second time someone had told her that today. Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, imaging the scene where her mother tried her best to overcome her fears and pick up her courage to stand on the stage and face the audience, giving a fantastic speech. In front of the mirror was her continuous practice, from pronunciation to gesture. When fatigue (疲倦) came, she would sit in her seat and recite the passage over and over again in order to improve her fluency.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Though having made adequate preparations, she was still overwhelmed (被压倒的) by great nervousness: her heart beat violently as she dragged herself to the front of the class; her face turned pale and she could hardly squeeze out any word with her absolutely blank mind. Anxiety had almost drove her crazy when suddenly, she caught sight of Mr Roberts’ smile, comforting and inspiring. She remembered her Momma’s encouraging words. “How could I let them down?” she thought to herself. Holding the blue ribbon tight in her hand, she took a deep breath, calmed herself down and gathered her courage. “Dear fellow students,” she started...

M: Can I register for any course I like?
W: Not exactly. There are plenty of openings in our evening program, but there are no places left in the morning or afternoon I’m afraid.
(Text 2)
M: I’m going to go visit my parents in Brighton this weekend.
W: Really? I’m going to Brighton myself. How are you getting there?
M: My car broke down, so I have to go by bus or train.
W: Well, there’s plenty of room in my car!
(Text 3)
W: You know, this room needs a new paint job. Do you think you can handle it?
M: Let me see what my schedule is like this weekend.
(Text 4)
M: So, what are you going to wear tonight? You know you can’t get away with jeans. It’s a formal dinner party.
W: Ugh, I know and I hate wearing dresses.
M: You could just wear a skirt or something.
W: Yeah, I guess I have no choice.
(Text 5)
M: Jane’s always singing when she works.
W: Yeah, and it’s a habit that gets on everyone’s nerves.
M: I guess she thinks she has a nice voice.
W: If she thinks that then she’s the only one.
(Text 6)
M: Our new assistant starts on July 7th, but I don’t have a computer for him. I placed an order today.
W: Oh, that’s a problem. Today is already June 30th. It usually takes three weeks for orders to be filled.
M: Three weeks? That won’t do.
W: Why not talk to the IT manager? He might have an extra computer the assistant could use.
M: I should. But he is out at lunch right now. I’ll have to talk to him when he gets back.
(Text 7)
W: Hello, well, there’s something I need to talk to you about.
M: Oh yeah?
W: I have an exam coming up and I’m studying, and ... well, the problem is there’s a lot of noise coming from your flat at night.
M: Oh, you mean last weekend?
W: Yeah, well, kind of every night. I mean last weekend but also during weekdays.
M: Really? I had a party with my friends on Saturday.
W: Yeah, the thing is, I can’t study because of the noise.
M: Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize, to be honest. I can turn the music down.
(Text 8)
W: Thank you for staying at the Rattleton Suites Hotel. Here’s a copy of your bill.
M: Thank you … Oh, I believe you’ve made a mistake. I don’t think the discount was applied to my bill. When I booked, it said that if you attend the Education Expo and stay four nights, one night is free. Everything else looks correct.
W: Oh, let me check. You checked in on March 3rd and today is the 7th. You’re right. I’m sorry about that. I’ll process that right away. There has been something wrong with our system recently, so it didn’t apply some discounts. I’ll return $500 to you.
M: That’s OK. Also, could you tell me where I can catch the hotel bus to the airport?
W: It’s just outside the main doors here. A bus leaves every half hour. You can catch one in about ten minutes.
M: Thanks very much.

W: Good morning Mr. Wood. What’s brought you here today?
M: I’ve got this terrible leg pain.
W: Would you like me to give you some painkillers before we go on?
M: Yes, please.
W: Can you show me exactly where the pain is?
M: I’ve been getting it right here.
W: Right. I see. And how long have you had it?
M: For the past hour.
W: And when did the pain start?
M: It came on when I was working out in the garden about two weeks ago. And then I got this pain. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesn’t.
W: Have you had this pain before?
M: Not the pain in the leg, no. I had a pain in my left shoulder and arm when I was walking to work one morning about a month ago, but it recovered soon.
W: OK. I’d like to ask you some questions …

M: Hello, everyone. I’m Mr. Brown and I’m the Social Organizer. It’s my job to make sure you have some fun while you’re here! Now I’m glad to talk to you about today’s arrangements. This afternoon we’ll go together on a walking tour of the city, exploring its sights and sounds. Then on Wednesday afternoon, we’re off to the local sports center, where you can take part in various activities such as volleyball, basketball, gym workouts to keep yourselves fit and active! And there is also a pool and a football field being built. On Friday afternoons, we have a Film Club — this week’s movie is Spiderman. On Saturday we’re heading out for a day trip to Oxford, leaving here at 8:30 in the morning. Please don’t be late or we’ll leave without you! And finally, on Sunday, we’re off to London, leaving at the same time, and you’d better arrive 10 minutes early. If there are any other activities you’d like to do while you are here, then just ask me and I’ll see if I can help.
