Read the post from Paul on the “Answers 4U” website.
Hello everyone,
I’m studying journalism in university. In the first term, everyone has to do a course called“Creative Thinking and Writing”. At first, I thought it wouldn’t be a problem — but now I’m really anxious because I’m not a creative person at all! I’m scared that I’m going to look stupid and I won’t pass the course, or else I’ll only get through it with great difficulty.
Can anyone help me? Some tips on being creative would be good.
Thanks a lot.
Paul
Read what Sarah writes in reply to Paul.
Hi Paul,
I read your post and can completely relate to it. I’ve been in exactly the same situation — I even did a journalism course, just like you. So here are my thoughts.
You say “I’m not a creative person”. Look — everyone’s creative. If you tell yourself you’re not creative, you’ll easily start to believe it. So, the first thing to do is: stop thinking like that. People sometimes talk about“thinking outside the box”. Actually, the box is the way we’ve been brought up to see problems. A central difficulty in our ability to think outside the box is that we must always have a “right” answer, which limits creative thinking. So, try to stop seeing things as “right” or “wrong”.
Another problem is that we often find faults with our own ideas before we give them a chance to grow. While you’ re thinking, just try to brainstorm ideas in an enjoyable way — then choose the best ideas later.
And don’t worry about looking stupid. If you try an idea and other people laugh at your idea, that’s their problem, not yours. Try to look at the course as a way to have fun. Work hard, don’t hold yourself back, do everything with great interest, and you’ll be fine.
Anyway, enough from me. I hope these ideas help.
Sarah

D. She thinks people should think freely without fear of judgement.
23. From the passage we know that ________.

At your next meeting, wait for a pause in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.
Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures.
What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of reflection and sign of respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds — nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.
In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.
In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference, it’s hard to establish common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people are verbally engaged to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.
In contrast, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.
27. Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?
A. The Dutch. B. Americans.
C. The English. D. The Japanese.
28. What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation?
A. Speaking more gives the upper hand.
B Speak out what you have in your mind.
C. Great minds think alike without words.
D. The shorter talking silence, the better.
29. What can we learn from the text?
A. A four second silence in conversation is universal.
B. It’s hard for Americans to reach a common agreement.
C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.
D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.
30. What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Similarity. B. Contradiction.
C. Diversity. D. Misunderstanding.
Section C 8%
Directions: Read the following passage and complete the brief outline that follows. Write one word or more in each space.
Many of us invest valuable time, energy and money planning our vacations. We do this because we know for sure that going on vacations must be good for us. Research proves this feeling without a doubt. Vacations help us perform better at work, improve our sleep quality and cushion us against depression.
Yet, despite these benefits, many of us return home with a feeling that our last vacation was OK — but not great. In order to change this, some mistakes should be avoided. A classic one for vacation planners is attempting to maximize value for money by planning trip s that have too many components Perhaps you’re planning a trip to Europe, seven cities in 10 days, and you realize it will cost only a little more to add two more destinations to the list. It sounds fine in theory, but hopping from one place to the next hardly gives an opportunity to experience what psychologists call mindfulness — time to take in our new surroundings, time to be present and absorb our travel experiences. Another mistake is that we worry too much about strategic issues such as how to find a good flight deal, how to get from A to B, or which destinations to add or subtract from our journey. These issues may seem important, but our psychological state of mind is far more important.
Actually, vacation happiness is based on the following top rules. First, choose your travel companions wisely, because nothing contributes more significantly to a trip than the right companions. Second, don’t spend your vacation time in a place where everything is too expensive so as to keep a positive mood. Third, shop wisely, for meaningful experiences provide more long-term happiness than physical possessions.
Outline: The main idea of the passage: How can we ____31____?
I.____32____ of vacations
II.____33____
____34____
Unnecessary worries about some detailed problems
III.Some rules to be followed
1.Choosing right companions

Hello everyone,
I’m studying journalism in university. In the first term everyone has to do a course called“Creative Thinking and Writing”.
Sarah

B. Speak out what you have in your mind.
D 28. C 29. D 30. A
根据第二段首句“Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most.(对于说英语的人来说,可能最多一两秒钟)”及第三段最后两句“Research in Dutch and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds — nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.(荷兰语和英语的研究发现,当对话中的沉默持续4秒时,人们就会开始感到不安。相反,另一项针对商务会议的研究发现,日本人对8.2秒的沉默感到满意,这几乎是美国人会议时间的两倍)”可知,日本人可能在谈话中有最长沉默。故选D。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段首句“In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all.(在日本,人们认为最好的交流方式是什么都不说)”可推知,日本人在对话中可能会同意“心有灵犀一点通”。
根据文章最后一句“For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.(例如,在你最亲密的朋友和家人面前,保持沉默比和你不太熟悉的人在一起更容易)”可推知,亲密的人之间更容易出现沉默,因此我们和家人越亲密,沉默越容易出现。
根据划线词下文的举例“For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.(例如,在你最亲密的朋友和家人面前,保持沉默比和你不太熟悉的人在一起更容易)”可推知,越亲密的人,越容易出现沉默,因此推断划线所在句意为“相比而言,当有更多相似时,也许沉默更容易出现”。 故选A。

In order to change this, some mistakes should be avoided.(然而,尽管有这些好处,我们中的许多人回到家后都觉得上次的假期还可以——但并不完美。 How can we enhance our vacation experience。故填enhance our vacation experience。
根据第一段中“Many of us invest valuable time, energy and money planning our vacations. We do this because we know for sure that going on vacations must be good for us. 【33题详解】
考查主旨大意。根据第二段中“Yet, despite these benefits, many of us return home with a feeling that our last vacation was OK — but not great. In order to change this, some mistakes should be avoided.(然而,尽管有这些好处,我们中的许多人回到家的感觉是,我们的上一个假期还可以,但不是很好。为了改变这种情况,应该避免一些错误)”和其后“A classic one for vacation planners is attempting to maximize value for money by planning trip s that have too many components (组成部分).(度假规划者常犯的一个经典错误是试图通过规划包含过多组成部分的旅行来最大化金钱的价值)”和“Another mistake is that we worry too much about strategic issues such as how to find a good flight deal, how to get from A to B, or which destinations to add or subtract from our journey.(另一个错误是,我们过于担心战略问题,比如如何找到合适的机票,如何从A地到达B地,或者在我们的旅程中增加或减少哪些目的地)”可知,第二段主要介绍了假期计划中要避免的错误。 故填Mistakes to avoid。
根据第二段中“A classic one for vacation planners is attempting to maximize value for money by planning trip s that have too many components (组成部分). 【答案】The newly broadened square is four times the size of the previous one.
结构,表示“以前的(那一个)”应为the previous one,为比较对象,其中one指代的为square,所以,表示“以前的四倍大”应译为four times the size of the previous one作表语。 The newly broadened square is four times the size of the previous one.

Small Changes Make an Ideal School Library
As a student of Mingqi High School, I am excited about the upcoming renovation of our library during the summer vacation. Among the many potential improvements, I particularly envision two important changes. Firstly, I hope to see more comfortable seating arrangements, including sofas and beanbags, to create a cozy reading environment. Secondly, I propose introducing a digital reading zone with computers and tablets, enabling students to access e-books and online resources effortlessly.
These changes are crucial because they directly enhance the student experience. Comfortable seating encourages longer reading sessions, fostering a deeper engagement with books. Meanwhile, the digital reading zone caters to the modern learning trends, making it easier for students to access information beyond the physical shelves. With these small yet impactful adjustments, our library will transform into an ideal learning hub that meets the needs of both traditional and digital learners.
