Fifteen years ago, I loved going to the gym, but family life and work commitments meant I was finding it hard to get there. With the help of my dad and uncle, I built my own gym in the garden. It’s basically a beautiful room with insulation (隔热) and electric (供电) and a small heater for the winter. We built a corner desk too, which was intended for my doing the paperwork for my small business. However, the desk served its real purpose when I started my writing journey two years ago.
I’ve always had stories going through my mind. I could be out jogging and I’d lose myself in thoughts in my head like movie scenes. Once seen, they stay in there. I have trouble keeping other kinds of information, but when it comes to story ideas, they can be memorized by me. I have many fresh ideas in my head waiting to be written. When I was younger, I wasn’t brave enough to write. I didn’t do well in school and I’ve spent most of my life in physical work, so the idea of becoming a writer felt laughable.
I now know there isn’t a writer type; writers come in all forms. I still use the gym for its real purpose, but some of the equipment has been replaced by books and a small bed for the time when I want to relax and read. I like to have my desk looking colorful — some might say messy. My love for sport is clear to see, with photos around of my favorite boxers and the football team I follow. On the other hand, having my own writing room is important. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am now on my writing journey. It’s far from charming, but it is mine. It’s my happy place.
24. Who helped the author build the gym?
A. His coach and cousin. B. His father and uncle.
C. His friend and neighbour. D. His workmate and brother.
25. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2?
A. He got on well with his study at school.
B. He wrote a number of stories as a child.
C. He has a lot in his head waiting to be written.
D. He is good at remembering all sorts of information.
26. What sports team is the author a fan of?
A. A baseball team. B. A volleyball team.
C. A basketball team. D. A football team.
27. What is the author’s gym mainly used for now?
A. Writing and fitness. B. Teaching and office work.
C. Storing clothes and sleeping. D. Relaxation and entertainment.

Scientists say they have discovered three new species of fish in one of the deepest places on Earth.
All the three species were found in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile and Peru. They were deep in the Atacama Trench — 7,500 meters below the surface.
Researchers from Britain’s Newcastle University say the new species have been given temporary names based on their coloring. They are known as “the pink, the blue and the purple Atacama Snailfish (狮子鱼)”.
The three snailfish species are different from most other fish. Their unusual bodies are built to deal with the cold water and extreme pressure deep in the ocean.
All three are small and translucent, meaning light can pass through their skin. They also have no scales (鳞片) on the skin for protection.
Other scientists say the “blue” Atacama Snailfish appears to be a rare “winged” snailfish. But it has long fin (鳍) and big head similar to the Ethereal Snailfish off the coast of Mariana Islands.
The “pink” is closer in appearance to the Mariana Snailfish, a species found in the deepest part of Mariana Trench on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
The third species is a small purple snailfish. It is similar to the fish living at the depth of 3,500 meters. One of the purple snailfish, about 9 centimeters long, was brought to the surface for further study.
From the video shot by the scientists of Newcastle University, Linley said, “There is something about the snailfish that allows them to adapt to living very deep. Beyond the reach of other fish they are free of competitors and predators (捕食者).”
28. What causes the special bodies of the three new species of fish?
A. The cold water. B. Great pressure beneath the deep sea.
C. Many competitors and predators. D. Both A and B.
29. What does the underlined word “translucent” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Allowing seeing through. B. Full of strength.
C. Traditional. D. Different.
30. Which fish is similar to the Mariana Snailfish?
A. The Ethereal Snailfish. B. The pink Atacama Snailfish.
C. The blue Atacama Snailfish. D. The purple Atacama Snailfish.
31. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Species of fish and predators. B. Introduction to the underwater world.
C. Abundant ocean resources. D. Three new fish species found in the Pacific Ocean.
D 29. A 30. B 31. D

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t know. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
32. What does the underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Start. B. Study. C. Find. D. Teach.
33. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about?
A. What to know about a new school. B. How to prepare for a new school.
C. What to do on your first day of school. D. How to spend your first day of school.
34. According to the passage, you usually do the following things on the first day of school except _________.
A. introduce yourself B. learn about the school rules
C. make new friends D. go over your new lessons
35. If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, what will you feel from the passage we know?
A. Nervous. B. Sad. C. Happy. D. Worried.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. (大多数老师通过自我介绍和谈论这一年你们要做的事情来kick off新学年)”以及常识可知,在新学年大家都不认识,互相做介绍显然是教学工作的开始,kick off表示“开始”。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. (你可以通过穿自己真正喜欢的衣服让这一天变得特别)”以及“It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.(它还可以让你做好准备,拥有你需要的所有东西,比如铅笔、文件夹和其他任何你需要的东西。但一定要在前一天晚上把它们打包好,以防你早上没有时间)”可知,本段重点介绍了如何通过穿着、物品准备等方式为开学第一天做好充分准备。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. (一些老师也给学生一个机会,让他们向全班同学介绍自己。当老师在第一天讲话时,他们经常给你读课堂规则和校规,这样你就知道什么是允许的,什么是不允许的)”以及第三段“You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t know.(第一天你可能已经认识班上的很多人了,但今天是交新朋友的好日子,所以试着向你认识的孩子和你不认识的新朋友问好)”可知,在开学的第一天学生要做自我介绍,了解学校的规章制度和结交一些新朋友,还没有学习新课程,所以不用复习。
根据最后一段“Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one.

故填where。
故填to share。
passion for...“对……的热爱”,固定搭配。故填for。

故填a。

It was the first time that I had ever run a long race — a marathon. The wind and the rain were cold, and the sun had not yet appeared to warm the day. The starting gun was about to go off any second, and I was ready.
At 28, I felt I was in the best shape of my life. I thought I was completely prepared, having run regularly and participated in several races. But none of those races had been as long as a marathon — 26.2 miles. The longest distance I had run before was just 15 miles. But I was young, full of confidence, and certain that I could make it.
When the gun went off, the race began. I was filled with excitement, and soon the cold weather seemed like nothing to worry about. I focused only on maintaining my position among the other runners. At first, I did have a specific goal in mind — to finish in under four hours. Once I settled into my pace (步伐), though, I quickly realized the goal was well within reach.
After a few miles, I passed an older runner. He looked to be at least 70 years old, and I was surprised to see him in the race. What surprised me even more was that he was ahead of me. He was running slowly, but he kept a steady rhythm (节奏). I passed him without saying a word or offering any encouragement, just continuing to focus on my own race.
By the time I reached the 15-mile mark, I was still on track to finish in under four hours. However, I began to feel tired. My original goal quickly changed from under four hours to four hours and ten minutes, then four hours and 20 minutes. By the time I reached the 20-mile mark, I was out of breath and had to stop running and walk. I moved to the side of the road, struggling to keep my legs moving.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
And then, to my surprise, the elderly man passed me again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
His words struck me hard, and I pushed myself to continue running.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
And then, to my surprise, the elderly man passed me again. He was still moving effortlessly, and his rhythm remained steady despite the heavy rain and strong winds. I was struggling to keep moving, but there he was, running at the same calm pace as before. As he passed, he gave me a smile and said, “You’re almost there, young man. Just keep going!” His energy, which seemed endless, filled me with a mixture of admiration and frustration. How could he maintain such a steady rhythm? I couldn’t let him outpace me again.
His words struck me hard, and I pushed myself to continue running. I focused on every step, telling myself that I could keep up with him. The race wasn’t just about beating others; it was about pushing my own limits and finding out how far I could go. As I neared the finish line, I couldn’t catch him, but I was proud of the effort I had put in. The elderly man had taught me an important lesson: It’s not about how fast you run, but how you keep going, no matter what challenges you face.

A. Nervous. B. Sad. C. Happy. D. Worried.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
And then, to my surprise, the elderly man passed me again.
