D. SXSW. B One of the most exciting parts of Halloween is getting pumpkins (南瓜) to decorate the inside and outside of your home. You might even enjoy carving out Jack O Lanterns and might even keep the pumpkins around until they are right at the end of looking good. So what do you do once it’s time to deal with them? A lot of people think that it’s a good idea to throw them into the woods in order to feed them to wildlife. You would think that it’s better to do that rather than throw them in the trash. However, this is why wildlife experts are warming against doing that. While the idea is reasonable, it is actually causing a lot of harm to the local creatures. A myth seems to have built up that leaving pumpkins in woods helps wildlife. One of the biggest issues is that these pumpkins are frequently eaten by hedgehogs (刺猬) that are looking to gain as much weight as possible in this time of the year before winter kicks in. However, the pumpkin is actually bad for their little stomachs, causing them to experience dehydration and diarrhoea, eventually causing them to lose weight, and in some cases their lives. Of course, while Jack O Lanterns are lovely to look at, a lot of people throw them out without cleaning out any of the candles, plastic, or anything else that has been added as decorations. This can cause damage and can even be deadly to wildlife that end up eating these thrown-away pumpkins. The rotting pumpkins could attract wildlife that is not meant to be in that specific area, like rats. If you’re wondering what you should be doing with these old pumpkins instead, experts have some suggestions. You could try to compost (堆肥) them on your own at home. Another alternative is to ask a local farm if they want to accept them as donations. Just make sure that the way you deal with these pumpkins doesn’t end up causing harm. 4. What is a possible result of hedgehogs eating pumpkins? A. They put on weight. B. Their health improves. C. They get in danger. D. Their diets change. 5. What’s the problem with used pumpkins? A. They are unfit to eat. B. They can’t break down easily. C. They are not available in abundance. D. They attract too much. 6. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Pumpkin harm you should avoid. B. Benefits coming from the old pumpkins. C. Places where used pumpkins are needed. D. Suggestions on dealing with used pumpkins. 7. Which of the following can be the best tile for the text? A Thrown-Away Pumpkins Attract Rats B. Never Throw Old Pumpkins into Woods C. Pumpkins Bring Great Fun to Holidays D. Avoid Pumpkin Decorations for Holidays C Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your creativity or simply give your brain a rest. Nowadays, in the age of round-the-clock entertainment, it’s (technically) trickier to be bored. If the show you’re watching has lost its spark, you can easily amuse yourself on social media without even leaving the sofa. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. Feeling disengaged from the task in hand, or a lack of stimulation (刺激), does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of Central Lancashire. Being bored motivates you to search out something less boring to do. For example, if you decide there’s nothing worth watching on TV, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This, according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past two years saw a surge (激增) in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for the first time since childhood. But what about those times when you have no choice but to stick with the boring situation, waiting for a bus, for instance? The good news is that the boredom you’re feeling now could spark your creativity later, says a 2019 study published in the Academy of Management Discoveries journal. People who’d taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative ideas than another group who’d been given something more interesting to do first. Ultimately, don’t take it for granted that there’ll always be something close at hand to entertain us. With boredom, we will not run the risk of becoming boring ourselves. 8. What does the author imply in paragraph 2? A. Wondering mind can be healthy. B. Social media can surely entertain us. C. Being bored may be something good. D. Being involved in the task is beneficial. 9. Why was the surge in creativity seen recently? A. People were stimulated by boredom. B. People were better equipped at home. C. People had more hobbies to choose from. D. People were more concerned about mental being. 10. What is the purpose of the bean-sorting task in the 2019 study? A. To create a boring situation. B. To reduce people’s boredom. C. To make a funny performance. D. To show an entertainment at hand. 11. What is the best title of the passage? A. What is the point of creativity? B. Are we more easily bored nowadays? C. How can we deal with daily boredom? D. Does boredom make us more creative? D The world’s top car makers are increasingly offering more electric car models as they back away from gasoline engines. This growth is expected to continue, with more people choosing to hit the road with clean-running electric-powered cars. Environmentalists have praised the car makers for taking major steps to limit harmful pollutants linked to worldwide climate change. But electric cars are also known for another big characteristic. They run on electricity instead of gas, and can operate in silence. While many people might consider this a good thing, the main peril is that people walking in areas around electric cars cannot hear the cars coming, and therefore are very likely to be hit. Governments in the United States and Europe have recognized this. So they have set requirements for car makers to add warning sounds to cars operating on electricity. The US Department of Transportation finalized its rules a year ago, which require electric cars to be equipped with some kind of warning sound when moving at speeds up to 30 kilometers each hour. Representatives from some major car makers spoke about the issue ahead of the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. Frank Welsch is the head of technical development at Germany’s Volkswagen. He told Reuters “The electric car sound is its identity. It cannot be too noisy or disturbing. It has to be futuristic and cannot sound like anything we had in the past.” Of course, one of the easiest solutions will be for car makers to simply reproduce the sound a car will make if it actually runs on gas. But many industry officials believe this will be a mistake. They say this will not support the electric car’s true identity. It would also limit great possibilities to link the car’s sound to a whole new image, which could help increase sales. They are now trying any sound that can represent the electric cars. 12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. It’s hard to produce electric cars. B. Electric cars use much more energy. C. It costs less to drive an electric car. D. Electric cars will be more popular. 13. What does the underlined word “peril” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Function. B. Trap. C. Danger. D. Advantage. 14. What does Frank Welsch intend to tell us in Paragraph 5? A. How to recognize an electric car sound. B. Finding a perfect electric car sound isn't easy. C. The electric car sound is really important. D. Why a suitable electric car sound is needed. 15. What might be discussed in the following paragraph? A. Reasons why the electric car sound matters. B. Some new electric cars on the market. C. Some models of the electric car sound. D. Customers’ opinions on the electric car sound. Most of us in China are used to paying for everything with our phones. _____16_____ At least, this was the case for Lim Swee Say from Singapore, who found his first experience with Chinese payment methods quite impressive. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset. David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future. He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now. Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The mother was ashamed when she heard that. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1—20 ACBCA ACABB CABCB ACBAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 大庆外国语学校高二年级下学期第二次教学质量检测 英语试题 考试时间120分钟,满分150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题:每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. C They get in danger. D. Their diets change. 5. What’s the problem with used pumpkins? A. They are unfit to eat. B. They can’t break down easily. C. They are not available in abundance. D. They attract too much. 6. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Pumpkin harm you should avoid. B Benefits coming from the old pumpkins. C. Places where used pumpkins are needed. D. Suggestions on dealing with used pumpkins. 7. Which of the following can be the best tile for the text? A. Thrown-Away Pumpkins Attract Rats B Never Throw Old Pumpkins into Woods C. Pumpkins Bring Great Fun to Holidays D. Avoid Pumpkin Decorations for Holidays 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第四段关键句“However, the pumpkin is actually bad for their little stomachs, causing them to experience dehydration and diarrhoea, eventually causing them to lose weight, and in some cases their lives.”(然而,南瓜实际上对它们的小胃不好,导致它们脱水和腹泻,最终导致它们体重减轻,在某些情况下甚至失去生命。) 根据第五段关键句“Of course, while Jack O Lanterns are lovely to look at, a lot of people throw them out without cleaning out any of the candles, plastic, or anything else that has been added as decorations. This can cause damage and can even be deadly to wildlife that end up eating these thrown-away pumpkins.”(当然,虽然南瓜灯看起来很可爱,但很多人都把它们扔掉了,而没有清理掉任何蜡烛、塑料或其他作为装饰品添加的东西。 故选A项。 通读最后一段内容,结合最后一段关键句“If you’re wondering what you should be doing with these old pumpkins instead, experts have some suggestions.”(如果你想知道应该如何处理这些用过的南瓜,专家们有一些建议。) 通读全文,结合第二段内容“A lot of people think that it’s a good idea to throw them into the woods in order to feed them to wildlife. You would think that it’s better to do that rather than throw them in the trash. However, this is why wildlife experts are warming against doing that.”(很多人认为把它们扔到树林里喂野生动物是个好主意。 C Feeling a bit bored? C 9. A 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Feeling disengaged from the task in hand, or a lack of stimulation , does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of Central Lancashire.(中央兰开夏大学的研究人员表示,对手头工作感到心不在焉或缺乏刺激确实有好处。)” 根据第三段“For example, if you decide there’s nothing worth watching on TV, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This, according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past two years saw a surge in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for the first time since childhood.(例如,如果你觉得没有什么值得看的电视节目,你可以选择关掉它,培养新的爱好。研究人员表示,这可以解释为什么在过去两年的封锁中,到童年以来首次拿起画笔的人们的创造力激增。)”可知,无聊刺激了人们使得人们出现了创造力的激增。故选A。 根据第四段“People who’d taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative ideas than another group who’d been given something more interesting to do first.(那些后来参与了豆子分类任务的人比另一组先做更有趣的事情的人在想出创意方面表现得更好。)” 故选A。 根据第一段“Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your creativity or simply give your brain a rest.(感觉有点无聊?它可能正是你所需要的,让你产生最好的想法,激发你的创造力,或者只是让你的大脑休息一下。)”及全文可知,本文主要介绍了通过一系列的研究实验发现无聊可以激发创造力。所以“Does boredom make us more creative?(无聊让我们更有创造力吗?)” D。 D The world’s top car makers are increasingly offering more electric car models as they back away from gasoline engines. He told Reuters, “The electric car sound is its identity. 12. D 13. C 14. C 15. It cannot be too noisy or disturbing. It has to be futuristic and cannot sound like anything we had in the past.(电动汽车的声音就是它的特性。 由文章最后一段“They are now trying any sound that can represent the electric cars.(他们现在正在尝试任何可以代表电动汽车的声音。)” Most of us in China are used to paying for everything with our phones. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文: Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.” The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy. 词汇激活: 行为类: ①决定做某事:decide to do/determine to do ②聊天:chat with/talk with ③擅长做某事:be good at doing/do well in doing ④鼓励:encourage/inspire 情绪类: ①丧失信心:lose confidence/lose heart ②宽慰的:relieved/soothing 【点睛】【高分句型1】He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures.
